Are you going to celebrate your birthday at sea? Mallorca could be an ideal destination, being the cheapest among the Balearic Islands (Ibiza, Formentera and Minorca), ideal for both families and for those that are looking for entertainment. With only one discordant note: you expect a latin rithm (are we or not in Spain?), but you immediately realize to be in Germany ... but with the sea in the background. It's full of german people.

COUNTRY/STATO: Spain
PLACES/LUOGHI: Cala d'Or, Es Trenc, Manacor, Sa Calobra, Paguera, Palma de Maiorca.
HOTELS: Prinsotel Alba in Cala D'Or, Hotel Paguera Park in Paguera
CAR RENTAL/NOLEGGIO AUTO: 65 euros (from thursday to monday)
FLIGHT/VOLO: 90 euros

We land in Palma de Mallorca in the late afternoon of Thursday (the return is scheduled for Monday morning), three full days to explore the island. From Palma we drive to Cala D'Or, the place where we spend the first two nights, we'll spend the other two Paguera, not far from Palma. It takes one week to visit the whole island (it's not huge, but there are a lot of things to see), we only have three days so we need to avoid some nice places in the north of the island.

Out of the airport we stop at GoldCar, the company where we rented the car. Troubles come immediately. Ale paid for the rent from Italy, so the lady claims the same credit card and only the owner of that credit card could drive. "Sorry, i would like to drive, not Ale" says Marco. "Ok, 5 euros every day" she answers. "Ok, Ale drives". Finished? Of course it's not finished. We are forced to pay 73 euros for e refueling (our car is a "500"): it's an exaggeration because the gasoline in Spain costs not so much. If you are renting a car there and Goldcar seems to be the cheapest, pay attention.

Sarà così in tutta l'isola.

The navigator takes more than our to receive satellites and we opt for the "do it yourself", and following the signs are in a good hour we are in Cala D'Or. We spoke of the Germans before ... they are really everywhere: waiters speak german, writing are in german. It will be the same in the rest of the island. The next morning we begin our adventure in the typical Majorcan coves. We decide to start from the most famous one: Es Trenc, not far from Cala D'Or. We walk along a dirt road and suddenly the Parking (fee, € 6) appears. Excited we head to the beach but we are immediately disappointed: strong wind, sea not calm and... it's also a  nude beach! We prefer to change destination.

Torniamo verso Cala d'Or e ci fermiamo a Cala Esmeralda: questa sì molto bella.

Let's go back to Cala d'Or and stop in Cala Esmeralda: very nice.

For an afternoon we are children, playing with the waves along the seaside with the other tourists ...

in un ambiente davvero scenografico.

In an environment really nice.

After a walk in downtonw and a few souvenir shop visited ...

We decide to follow the receptionist's suggestions. We avoid downtown, we are going to have dinner at the port. Yes, in the afternoon we had intuition: "why dont' we ask the locals where to have dinner.". "Do you want to eat really as it should be?" the receptionist sayd... "Yes, we are looking for if paella." is our reply. "Go to the port, not in downtown and look for the Aquarius restaurant" she said.

Fenomenale.

We eat the best Paella ever with only 13 euros in front of the sea. Amazing!

Mallorca, spanish birthday (day 3)

"Ehm, no. Lo sai vero che c'è qualcun altro a Manacor...".

We leave Cala D'Or with any plan for the day. We only know that the hoter where we are going to spend the night is in Paguera, close to Palma de Maiorca. Marco proposes to go to Manacor: but not for the pearls (symbol of the city), but because the tennis player Rafa Nadal lives there. As soon as we enter in Manacor Ale sees a big picture of him and we decide to stop there for a coffee.

We immediately become friends with the waitress and she tells us that Rafa started playing tennis in that club and he is going to train there in the next few days.

She gives us also the phone of the club and tells us to call in order to ask if Rafa is going to train and when exaclty he trains!

Ale remembers that near Manacor there are famous caves and we decide to visit the "Cuevas del Drac" (14€) , the nearest to the city and maybe the most famous and beautiful.

Tours start every hour and we are in time for the midday one, we just have to wait few minutes, meanwhile we take some picture of the view.

Once entered we see a lot of stalactites and stalagmites that lead us till an undergroung lake.

We go down for about a mile through this underground landscape and we arrive in front of this cristal clear lake.

We sit down on benches and lights turn off: 3 boats enlightened on which the violinists offer us a mini concert of classical music, approach to us: very exciting..

At the end of the little concert we can choose to take the boat and across the lake, we can also touch the water: very clean and cold!

We leave the caves at 1.30pm and instead of going immediatly to the hotel, we decide to go to Sa calobra: a famous cove in the west of the island.

We have to cross the entire island, a coast to coast, it's ony 80km but the GPS says that it takes more than 2 hours and half. Yes, because we have to climb a mountain.

After a lot of bends, we finally arrive in Sa Calobra. Once this cove was reachable only by sea, infact there are a lot of yachts parked in that clear water. But then tunnels were dug into the mountain in order to allow tourists to reach the beach even by walk.

Walking through those tunnels close to the sea is amazing. Suddenly the beach appears in front of us. It is made up of small stones, this is one of the reasons why the sea is so blue, awsome!

We arrive at the hotel in time for dinner, but we are tired so we decide to only have a little walk on the boardwalk.

We would like to spend the last full day in Mallorca visiting Palma, but we opt to enjoy an entire day at the beach. We go to Palma in the evening...

After dinner, we visit the city which is half an hour far from our hotel. If the island is wild, Palma is completely different. Hard Rock cafe, discos in every corner ... yes, we are in a big city. Obviously its symbol is the cathedral ...

that attracts tourists at any time of day.

Near the cathedral, between it and the sea, there is an artificial lake with a nice fountain in the middle.

But Palma is obviously not exclusively its cathedral. Shops, markets and of course many cafes and restaurants...

Walking through the city streets, we take a lot of pictures...

till we reach the harbor, populated by big and gorgeous yachts.

with the cathedral illuminated in the background.

So the long weekend in Mallorca is finished. A place we recommend to anyone that is looking for a bit 'of peace (and the sea ...), both for young people who love fun.

Cuba: alma Latina (part 1)

One of the first trips made together led us to Cuba, one of the Caribbean paradise. Because yes, we are  "Americanized", but the Latin charm is calling us. It's 2010, and of course we were different from now ... So we are not in a "Casa Particular" (bedrooms offered by the citizens, a kind of bed end breakfast typical of Cuba and an experience you have to do at least once in your life), but in a village, we were not even in the "real Cuba", but in Varadero ... however the spirit of adventure was growing up inside us...

Our travel agent organized the trip: one week in a resort in Varadero. Varadero is a peninsula characterized by hotels and resorts, off-limits to Cubans without access permission. If you want to go to Cuba and you are not looking for special adventures this is your place ...

Obviously, if you stay for a week in Varadero you may not live the soul of the real Cuba. So, as soon as there was the opportunity, we avoided the organized excursions: we trusted the locals and, in particular, the animator Alberto, a Cuban who allowed us to live authentic experiences with our two traveling companions: Vale and Andrea, two guys we met in the village and that immediately took a place into our hearts.

(Ale with the cuban baptize)

(continua...)

Here, as always, we had a lot of adventures ... (more. ..)

martedì 22 luglio 2014

Cuba: alma Latina (part 2)

We decided that, during the week, we would have done at least a couple of excursions. We visited Havana by ourselves but the visit of Matanzas would have been easier with the organisation made by the resort. To be honest we decided to say "yes" almost exclusively for the fact that we would have driven all day log a jeep: fantastic

We choose the color that we like the most and then, with our faithful companions (Vale and Andrea) we follow the caravan of jeeps for the Cuban countryside. Obviously the first person who drives is Ale, but this is obvious ...

We see many animals on the road ...

And after five minutes of driving here is one of the first picture of the Cuban week: a child who greets all the jeeps whizzing in front of him: amazing!

The first stop of the day is at the sea: snorkeling time!

we are ready to dive into the sea. Oh dear, all ready ... except Marco who is not very quiet...

Despite a guide who likes jokes (every time he opens the box of food he calls hundreds of fish around us), we come out safe. So even if it's 9.30 am... is Pina Colada time. Well, there is not a time for cocktails with rum in Cuba, the only important thing is to drink it from morning to night ...

We head to the second step of the day, a fascinating boat trip along the river ...

... but first a typical picture with the symbol of Cuba, Che Guevara.

La gita in barca dura una mezz'oretta...

The boat trip takes about half an hour ...

... and then we are ready to drive on the Matanzas hills where lunch is waiting for us!

We have lunch in a farm: of course is "poor food", rice with beans, chicken with broth. Ok, it's not a five star lunch, but at that time it was an amazing experience.

We have time to enjoy the landscape and nature as well ...

while a goat is falling in love with Marco.

Before leaving, a coffee from a nice gentleman who tells us a bit of history about that place ...

and especially our first horseback ride. Obviously Ale's horse is  the most troubled of the four and we live moments of "panic" when our  horses begin to chase him.

The last adventure of the day is the visit of the only private company of Cuba: a very nice farm where we eat the best fruit ever.

L'unica nota stonata? Giusto così si dice in questi casi no?

The only problem? Marco sits on a piece of wood and starting from that moment his ass never stop burning!!!
