2016 trip - Route 66, Hawaii, Seattle and much more (day 7: Vinita - Oklahoma City)

STAGE PROFILE
STATES: Oklahoma
CITIES: Vinita (O) - Oklahoma City (O) 273 km
STOPS: Chelsea, Foyil, Catoosa, Tulsa, Sapulpa, Chandler, Arcadia

The great state of Oklahoma will be our faithful travel companion today. This isn't an exciting stage as the previous one, but will give us in the end probably one of the biggest emotion of' the entire trip. We are in the heart of the state and traveling toward Oklahoma City (the main city of the "native american State") when we encounter the first historical bridge of the day, the Historic Pryor Creek Bridge in Chelsea.

L'ingresso è gratuito e potrete ammirare i totem progettati e costruiti dall'artista dell'Oklahoma, alti addirittura quasi 30 metri.

The connection between the state of Oklahoma and the Native Americans is very strong. In Foyil, about 3.5 miles off the route 66, the artist Ed Galloway (between 1937 and 1961) built some totems dedicated precisely to the natives. Now it has become the  Ed Galloway's Totem Pole Park. Admission is free and you can admire the totem designed and built by the artist, some of them 90 feet tall.

A little farther on, in Claremore, we visit (admission free), the Belvidere Mansion, a Victorian style house where you're really back in time. Not only because of the ballroom on the top floor, but also for the opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea while the nicest ladies tell you the story of the house.

This is an area where you can find many historical route 66 places. Totem Pole Park just few mileas ago and now Catoosa, a city which has always been one of the masterpieces of the mother road, especially because of the "whale", a former amusement park now abandoned, which has become a must stop for every travelers along the Route 66.

Avevano ragione.

Let's talk about one of the top five most visited attractions along the 2,700 miles of the mother road, but what you really discover is sense of decay and neglect. "Do not waste too much time at the whale, there are things much more interesting in this area to visit" we have been told several times by locals. They were right.

But there is an exception. Located in the square just in front of the pond that contains the "whale", Molly serves one of the best taco we've ever had.

Route 66 in Oklahoma goes not only through Oklahoma City, but also through the second largest city in the state, Tulsa. Actually also one of the most ugly of the North American continent. You won't visit it unless you're traveling along the mother road or going to visit one of the most interesting museums in the United States (which will be discussed in the Notes). Well, we  are not interested in museums, so what do we do? Certainly the Golden Triller, the huge statue of an "oil worker", is not enough to make a trip to Tulsa, even if oil here, like football, is a kind of religion ...

... Il guizzo vincente tuttavia non tarda arrivare. Per dare un senso alla sosta in quel di Tulsa andiamo alla caccia del "center of the Universe". Già, proprio quello. Situato non lontano da downtown, Center of the Universe è un luogo del tutto particolare, unico al mondo. In un preciso punto (ben segnalato) la tua voce rimbomba. Una sorta di anomalia acustica raccontata molto bene in questo link: (center of the universe).

We are here because of the center of the universe. Yes, you understood well. Located not far from downtown, the "center of Universe" is a very particular place, unique in the world. At a certain point (well signposted) your voice echoes. A sort of acoustic anomalies very well explained in this link: (center of the universe)

We go through Sapulpa, Stroud (where you can visit the Route 66 interepretive center) and then Arcadia where we encounter two special places The first is the old round barn which, as the route 66 too, has lived its moment of greatest splendor many years ago

E poi "Pops".

And then "Pops". If you are thirsty and want a soda, this is your place. You will find 500 types of soda. Some are impossible to find elsewhere. Inside Pops there is also a restaurant.

We told you at the beginning of this post that in the end of the day we would have had a great experience. We are in Oklahoma City, not far from downtown (two blocks) and the atmosphere has already changed. We are going to visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, the memorial museum of the first major terrorist attack within the United States. The media coverage was obviously not equal to that of September 11, 2001, but all Oklahoma (and in particular its Queen City) is still marked by the events that took place on April 19, 1995.

We are lucky because even if the museum is about to close, the nice lady after seeing the disappointment on our faces not only makes an exception to the rule letting us enter into the museum, but even without any charge (the ticket price would be $ 15).

A day like any other day.

A day like any other day. This sentence appears as soon as you enter in this museum which recounts in detail the tragic events that occurred on April 19, 1995. It was 9:01 a.m. when a bomb containing more than 2,300 kg of ammonium fertilizer nitrate exploded in front of the Federal Building: 168 people died (including 19 children) and 680 were hurt. McVeigh and Nichols were the perpetrators although, as often happens, there are still conspiracy theories...

The memorial stands just outside the museum. They shall remember all the people who fell, while the clock is stopped on 9.01. Exactly the time when Oklahoma City changed forever.

Then, as the American stories often tell, there is always something that makes a little bit romantic also a sad event like the Federal Building bombing. The explosion, which was heard up to 40 miles away, not only destroyed the building, but also damaged all the buildings which were located close to it. Anything but a tree, placed outside the Federal Building, which resisted. That symbolizes the Oklahoma City's restart.

Although still terribly shaken by the events of 1995. Despite those events happened more than twenty years ago.

We also would like to visit the National Western Heritage Museum (the most beautiful museum dedicated to the west and cowboys), but it is very late. We reach Bricktown, a sort of  San Antonio "riverwalk" younger brother, a small water canal with restaurants and pubs.

The ultimate proof that we are absolutely in love with the United States Of America is that we even like cities like Oklahoma City or San Antonio. Well, they're not exactly neither Chicago nor New York

We need to change our mood and the only way is to go to Marco's favourite country singer restaurant: "Toby Keith i love this bar". This is a classic American sports bar and its chicken wings with ranch dressing are definitely amazing.

2016 trip - Route 66, Hawaii, Seattle and much more (day 8: Oklahoma City - Amarillo)

STAGE PROFILE
STATES: Oklahoma-Texas
CITIES: Oklahoma City (O) - Amarillo (T) 418 km
STOPS: Bridgeport, Hydro, Weatherford, Clinton, Elk City, Erick, Texola, Shamrock, Mclean, Alanreed, Groom, Conway

This is the day of the longest stage along the  Route 66. More than 280 miles kilometers along endless roads between the western plains of Oklahoma (home of the onion ring burgers) and the East Texas where, you know, everything is bigger. We have to run again and can't miss anything. Once left Oklahoma and got back to the route 66, we decide to follow and older stretch of the mother road. This road is away from the highway and goes north through Calumet and Geary, along the "270". They seem to be lands forgotten by God. At the intersection with the 281 we turn left and, after a few miles, we see the Canadian River. That means that we are going through the historic canadian river bridge, the longest bridge of the route 66.

Lei era "the mother of the mother road", la mamma della route 66. In Get Your Kicks on route 66, la celebre canzone dedicata alla route 66, lei viene nominata.

From Bridgeport, deflecting towards the south, you would encounter the red rock canyon state park. However, being still very far from Texas, in the end we decide to get to Hydro and visit the Lucille's Gas Station. Here in Hydro Lucille was not a lady like any other. She was "the mother of the mother road". She passed away in 2000 and bequeathed her gas station, which as always been a meeting place for all the route 66 travelers. Like Gay Parita of Gary's Gay Parita Gas Station, even Lucille would have welcomed you with a smile and told stories about the mother road. She is even mentioned in Get Your Kicks on Route 66, the famous Route 66 song.

A sign of how alive is still her memory, a diner few miles west of Hydro, in the town of Bridgeport, gets her name. Outside the restaurant a replica of the gas station gas pumps reminds you the love of the entire territory for the figure of Lucille.

The entire Oklahoma is strongly connected to Route 66. And there is a city named Clinton, which is home of several historic motel like Glancy Motel and the Trade Winds Motel.

The Oklahoma Route 66 Museum.

It paid tribute to the historical route 66 also with probably the best museum you will find along the way that take you to Santa Monica. The Oklahoma Route 66 Museum. You can't really skip this place (entrance fee - $ 7).

West of Oklahoma is rich in museums about the history of the mother road. In the town of Elk City museums are even two. The national route 66 museum and the adjacent open-air museum that represents a 50 years ago town along Route 66 (combined ticket $ 5).

While approaching Texas we stop at Sandhills curiosity shop. The owner is a volcanic character and the relics of the route, here, are very special. We also meet for the first time four Australians travelers: they us are traveling along Route 66 like us. The fate decides that we will meet them four more times in the following days.

I 36 abitanti vi accompagneranno verso il cartello che indica l'entrata nel great state of Texas.

Texola is little more than a gloomy ghost town. The 36 inhabitants will accompany you to the the great state of Texas state line. Route 66 here always runs close to the I-40, between the usual semi-abandoned towns and one color: the red one, which becomes more and more predominant. Illinois and Missouri seem far away ...

Radiator Springs. Oh, scusate, Shamrock.

The first town that you will be facing once in Texas is ... Radiator Springs. Oh, sorry, Shamrock. Why did we mention Radiator Springs? Simple, just because the art deco building,  The Conoco Tower Station and U-Drop inn cafe, appears also in the movie Cars. Today more than ever we are experiencing the magic of one of the best cartoons of the past decade.

The Drop Inn Cafe is exactly how we imagined it. Almost everything reminds Cars. Disney Pixar came here and helped the town which now lives not only thanks to the memories of the route 66. We are being offered tea and coffee "because route 66 travelers must always be in good shape" and, once again, we get lost listening to the stories about this mother road segment and in particular about the Drop Inn Cafe.

Just few miles before reaching Amarillo we cross the towns of McLean and Alanreed, with their 66 Phillips gas station, and Groom with the unique leaning water tower and the second largest cross in the world.

Amarillo, Texas.

Amarillo, Texas. The final destination for today's stage is not a city like any other. The legend says, in fact, that a trip to Texas can not be complete unless you go to the north of the "lone star state" to visit the main symbol of Route 66. The Cadillac Ranch. The GPS will not help you, just pass the "real" cadillac ranch ...

(il "vero" Cadillac Ranch - The "real" cadillac ranch)

... and go straight for a couple of miles to the west of town. Then you will notice many cars parked on the roadside. That means that you have just reached the Cadillac Ranch.

Cadillac Ranch is not a ranch but a public art installation.  It was created in 1974 by Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez and Doug Michels: it consists of what were  either older running used or junk Cadillac automobiles, representing a number of evolutions of the car line  from 1949 to 1963.

Even the boss, Bruce Springsteen, paid tribute to this mystical place made by colors, spray cans and of course cadillacs. They are half-buried nose-first in the ground, at an angle corresponding to that of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.

We stop to admire artists and ordinary people who want to leave their "stamp" on the cadillacs. They hey perform with inscriptions and drawings on the cars. We'd be here for hours to admire them. Tip: we suggest not to wear new shoes and / or white shoes.

But, once in Amarillo, there is another must-see place even if, to be honest, this has been an experience quite disappointing. We are talking about the big texan steakhouse, one of those places that best symbolizes what Texas is. Here you can breathe not only the west, but also experience the true life of the Texans.

E, come detto "everything is bigger in Texas". Qui è ancora più "bigger".

As we said, everything is bigger in Texas. At the big texan ranch all is even bigger.

A 72 oz steak is the main character in one of the most beloved  contest of the state. You have just to eat it in one hour (sides included): the price money is very simple, you will eat for free. You will do this in front of all the other diners who will support you. Even our sirloin is quite large. The quality however is typical of a touristy place, not so great. But if you don't stop at the Big Texan you would miss an important part of Texas lifestyle.

2016 trip - Route 66, Hawaii, Seattle and much more (day 9: Amarillo - Roswell)

STAGE PROFILE
STATES: Texas - New Mexico
CITIES: Amarillo (T) - Roswell (NM) 440 km
STOPS: Vega, Ontario, Adrian, Glenrio, Tucumcari, Fort Sumner

It is true that what makes a trip to Northern Texas (and especially Amarillo) very special is the visit to the Cadillac Ranch. Anyway there is another very little known place (even the Americans ignore it) which is able to offer the first true welcome to the nature you will bump into , especially in New Mexico and Arizona. Well, we're not talking about Big Bend National Park, located on the hot border with Mexico, which is all too famous. The place we're going to visit is the Palo Duro Canyon State Park (admission fee $ 5 per person), 35 miles southeast of Amarillo.

This is the second largest canyon of  the entire United States (120 miles long, 20 wide): it just comes after the Grand Canyon, but nevertheless still surprisingly little known maybe because of its location not exactly perfect.

Palo Duro Canyon (from the Spanish meaning "hard stick") has been named "The Grand Canyon of Texas" both for its size and for its dramatic geological features, including the multicolored layers of rock and steep mesa walls similar to those in the Grand Canyon.

The visit includes a loop of about twenty miles. You will be able to descend with your car into the canyon and hike one of the many trails. It may be not as majestic and fascinating as the nature you would find in Arizona, but it definitely worth a visit.

We have to come back to Amarillo and take the "mother road" again towards Vega, one of those typical towns of the route 66, reminiscent of days gone by. We won't forget the kindness of the lady who works at the Magnolia Gas Station, one of the oldest route 66 gas station. She was about to leave with her car when, as soon as she noticed us, came back specifically to allow us to take some pictures and tell some stories.

You will notice a black car just thirty meters far from the gas station: yes, it's cars' Lizzie! Few blocks far, a bit hidden, there's Dots Mini Museum, one of the roadside attraction of the route 66. A museum established in 1944 containing relics of the mother road.

Ontario and Glenrio (home of the "first and last motel" in Texas depending on which direction you're coming from) are basically ghost towns, Adrian has rather stayed alive especially because it got the role of "midpoint" of the route 66. Calculations are not so easy to make, but... yes, we're definitely halfway! 1139 miles, in fact, separates us both from Chicago and Los Angeles.

The Midpoint Cafe is probably the most famous cafè of the mother road. Cakes here are amazing, but honestly we got the most delicious burger of the entire trip.

Once in Texas the route 66 often corresponds with the highway 40. As the stretch that leads to the  the "Great State of New Mexico," which is our favorite (along Arizona) among all the states we've visited. It's "Land of Enchantment" again after three years: and the sky already looks bigger ...

E' semplicemente stupendo.

If you ask those who have traveled the 2,500 miles of Route 66 which is the most beautiful city of the mother road well ... many of them will answer Tucumcari, New Mexico. Here route 66 is still alive, motels are all on business: one of them still makes every traveler dreams. The Blue Swallow motel. It's just amazing. Writing its name on google means "i wanna go there. Immediately".

We did not stay there just because Tucumcari is too close to Amarillo. And we've chosen to spend the night in the texan city.

Unfortunately, the owners are not here, this time no stories. We admire the car positioned just outside the lobby and the vintage rooms positioned on the back: they make us dream. One thing is certain. Next time we will definitely spend the night at the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico, one of the best five things to see along the route 66

Just across the street there's another symbol of Tucumcari: The Tee Pee Curios, a souvenir shop in with its very famous tee pee shape. That makes it truly unique. In here we meet our "australian friends" for the second time...

Before leaving Tucumcari we make a quick stop at the monument of the route 66, then straight to the south.

Yes, we are leaving the mother route for a couple of days. If you follow it, you will go straight to Albuquerque through Santa Rosa and its very famous "blue hole". We will resume the road righ in Albuquerque. Now we are heading to the deep south, close to the Mexican border, in an area of the state we had already visited three years ago. We promised "a single deviation from the route 66" and the wildcard we play is (again) the White Sands. The stretch from Tucumcari to Fort Sumner on the 209 (which becomes 252) is something amazing. It's just us, some ranch and the road: 200 kilometers alone in the land of enchantment.

We're driving to Fort Sumner for one reason only. His name is Henry McCarthy, better known as Billy the Kid. In this town one of the most famous outlaws in American history was killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in circumstances never fully clarified after escaping from the prison where he was held after being sentenced to hang. Billy The Kid is the only one that was at the same time both outlaws and even folk hero.

Il Billy The Kid grave site è situato lungo Blly the kids road, tre miglia a est della città.  Imboccate la "60", poi svoltate a sinistra lungo Billy the Kid Road e percorretela verso sud per tre miglia sino a raggiungere l'Old Fort Cemetery.

In Fort Sumner you can visit the museum dedicated to the outlaw, and especially the grave site, the "real grave site". There are, in fact, two grave sites, one located into the museum and the other one located in the Old Fort Cemetery. Billy The Kid grave site is located along the Billy the Kid road, three miles east of the city. Take the "60", then turn left down Billy the Kid Road and follow it south for three miles until you reach the Old Fort Cemetery.

Ma se mai gli alieni ci avessero fatto visita, this is the place.

The last 84 miles lead to Roswell, south-east of New Mexico. It was the 2nd of July 1947,  when an unidentified flying object crashed on a ranch located seventy miles north of the town. The US government has provided at least three versions of the incident and they it's the only one who knows the truth. Anyway, if ever aliens have visited us, this is the place. In 2007, the sixtieth anniversary festival brought in town fifty thousand fans.

Well, if you're don't like aliens that much (in the heart of the downtown you'll find the world famous UFO Museum, a must for aliens' fan), Roswell has nothing more to offer. In fact we are already thinking about tomorrow: the White Sands National Monument ...
