2017 XMAS TRIP - THE SOUTH-EAST: Georgia, Northern Florida, South Carolina and much more (day 9 - 10 things to see in Charleston)

"If you enjoyed Savannah, wait until you see Charleston. It's another gem, less snobby and more sparkling." If you're coming from the south (just like us) and just crossed the border between the states of Georgia and South Carolina, in all likelihood you've heard this phrase over and over again by the inhabitants of the suburbs of the city of Charleston. And the truth is that they are right. Charleston is really a little gem, perhaps less publicized than Savanah, but no less fascinating. In the distant 1670 the Europeans were the first to realize how beautiful this area was: they were attracted by the really inviting position of the city, located in the heart of a beautiful bay.

Spaniards and French challenged the British which wanted to establish colonies in that area. And then also the pirates, because thery also had a stake in the race to Charleston, including the famous Barbanera, a real person who had his base in the Outer Banks, a little further north, and obviously the natives, who in any case tried to fight back every attack by the invaders. Everybody wanted Charleston, but it still managed to survive, becoming one of the most important slaves sorting center in North America. And now there are many tourists who want to visit it, attracted by the opportunity to walk through its streets and retrace its truly glorious past.

Unfortunately, Charleston's weather was awful during the day we've been there (the following day Charleston's airport had remained closed)  and the icy wind prevented us from living it as well as we would have liked. And as well as a city as beautiful as Charleston's would have deserved. In spite of this, we managed to visit the ten places not to be missed in Charleston, starting from the very elegant King Street which we had experienced also the night before, the New Year's Eve,

King Street is nothing more than the ancestor of all the american's Main Streets that later have become icons in the United States, a street full of important shops and colonial buildings. It extends from the most southeastern tip of the peninsula on which Charleston is located, to the outskirts of the city to the northwest. There's no need to say the heart and soul of Charleston is downtown: the day trip among the ten places to visit in Charleston begins right here.

(downtown Charleston)

1) City Market

1) City Market
The tour starts right in front of one of Charleston's downtown gems, the historic City Market. It's the old city market that daily enlivens locals and tourists, located on the corner of Meeting Street and the two Market Streets (North and South).

You will not struggle to recognize the main entrance of the market (entirely covered) which then develops on two blocks along the two Market Streets, between local and non-local products, confirming that Charleston has always been a mix of cultures, sometimes due to circumstances that are not very noble.

You will also find handicraft products from Caribbean cultures or from the African-American community descending from slaves, as well as many souvenirs, a bar offering tastings of local cuisine and several books on tourism and local history.

2) Church Street
No, non ci siamo dimenticati.

2) Church Street
A little further south of the City Market, an entire street is dedicated to the most interesting churches in the city of Charleston. It is obviously called Church Street. The most photographed is certainly the St. Philip's Episcopal Church (142 Church St) with the annexed ancient cemetery, once again full of characters that have made city's and nation's history. Well, don't forget that even Charleston, like Savannah, is haunted and there are numerous evening tours offered by different agencies between cemeteries and buildings.

3) Heyward Washington House

3) Heyward Washington House
Still along Church Street, exactly at number 87, you will notice one of the oldest dwellings in the city of Charleston. It was built in 1772 and belonged to Thomas Heyward Jr, one of the architects and signers of the Declaration of Independence. Everything is "original", from the kitchen to the work tools.

3) Old Slave Mart Museum

3) Old Slave Mart Museum
If you are looking for a piece of American history, this is definitely the place for you. This is Chalmers Street (number 6), not far from Church Street which we have just left behind us, where stands the Old Slave Mart Museum, one of the last Slave Markets in the world preserved as it was at the time of the slave trade. Unfortunately, on the first day of January the museum is closed, but what we've found on the internet is enough to understand the pain and suffering passed through this building. Millions and millions of people uprooted from their homeland against their will and forced into unspeakable suffering in the "new world". Once arrived in the major cities on the coast, in fact, they were sold as labor for jobs in rice and tobacco plantations in the south of the United States. Each slave had a price, depending on age and physical condition. From 10 to 90 dollars.

4) St Michael's Episcopal Church

4) St Michael's Episcopal Church
If you are coming from Savannah and then from the south, as you enter Charleston you will notice the impressive white St Michael Episcopal Church (71 Broad St), the oldest and most imposing religious building in the city, built between 1751 and 1761 in Georgian style. Two signatories of the American constitution also rest in its cemetery.

5) The Battery

5) The Battery
Bordered by East Battery & Murray Blvd, the most southerly point of the bay on which stands Charleston is called "The Battery". The day is probably not the right one, but with normal weather conditions, a walk to the White Point Garden park is a cure-all after the efforts you have accumulated walking through the downtown of the most beautiful city in South Carolina. From here you can enjoy a splendid view of both the bay and Fort Sumter. The latter, despite being a National Monument, is not part of the "America the Beautiful", the annual pass dedicated to National parks and Monuments. You will therefore have to buy a ticket which also includes a short ferry ride up to the fort. Boats leave (9.30, 12.00 and 14.30) to Fort Sumter at 340 of Concord Street: Fort Sumter is famous because in 1961 the first cannon shot of the American Civil War was fired.

6) Raimbow Row

6) Raimbow Row
Probably the most beautiful street in Charleston. A little Copenhagen's Nyhavn, a little San Francisco's Painted Ladies, Rainbow Row is the most colorful street in the city  (83-107 East Bay Street). We are walking along Bay Street (the main alternative to King Street) and facing the Rainbow Row neighborhood, the most characteristic of Charleston. The cover is a series of variegated terraced houses with various shades of pastel colors. If you love photography, you will end up stopping by and getting lost in the beauty of this characteristic street.

7) Old Exchange Building

7) Old Exchange Building
Located at 122 East Bay Street, at the intersection with Broad Street, the Old Exchange Building is an impressive building built in the mid-1700s and used as a prison even for pirates captured during the attacks on cargo-filled vessels. Guides dressed in period costumes will also lead you to the dungeons, telling also several anecdotes related to the time of the pirates.

8) Aiken Rhett House

8) Aiken Rhett House
The Aiken Rhett House (Judith Street) is an original antebellum plantation, located north of downtown.

9) Other historic houses
Venturing through the downtown Charleston means getting lost in the historic homes of people who have made the history of Charleston. Americans really like antebellum, rather than Europeans, but this style that we are not used to has definitely intrigued us. We mention a few of them: the Calhoun Mansion, the Nathaniel Russel House, the Miles Brewton House, the Tucker Ladson House, the William Washington House, the Gibbens William House the Edmonton Alston House and the Robert Williams House. All these homes are located southeast of downtown, near Battery Point.

10) Magnolia Plantation
E' vero.

10) Magnolia Plantation
It's true. This is not Charleston, being the Magnolia Plantation and Garden located 13 miles north of the city, but a trip to Charleston cannot be complete without a visit to a plantation. The most famous, along with Middleton Place, is the Magnolia Plantation. The bitter cold curbed forced us not to visit it us, but we still headed to the plantation because we wanted to study the place in anticipation of a hypothetical future return to South Carolina.

The good weather is definitely necessary if you want to visit the plantation, also because ticket prices are exorbitant: 20 dollars per person for the admission, plus an additional 8 dollars for each single attraction inside the plantation. With just the "basic admission" you can see nothing but a small part of all that is the plantation. So be prepared to spend more than $ 50 to visit (in the photo you can check all the prices).

Yet there are many tourists who visit it also with bad weather conditions, eager to know the history of these ancient country residences that tell the story of the entire families of the south through several generations. Why visit the Magnolia Plantation? Because it boasts the "most beautiful gardens in the United States", defined by the artist William Silva "Garden of Dreams". They're not just the most beautiful gardens in the nation, but they are also the oldest: it was 1676 , in fact, when Thomas Drayton and his wife Ann founded Magnolia Plantation along the banks of the Ashley river. For over 300 years the Drayton family has remained its owner, becoming with the passing of time also one of the richest families of the entire United States thanks to the rice cultivation and trade.

The gardens were opened to the public for the first time in 1870 and since then they've become a very popular attraction in South Carolina, continuing to attract more and more curios and fans of history and nature from all over the world. Besides the azaleas and the camellias, today the gardens boast a numerous series of plants, divided into various sections: there is the tropical garden with palm trees and other exotic plants, the biblical garden, which includes all those species mentioned in the Bible and even a small zoo that houses some typical species of the southern United States and exotic birds. The Cypress Lake is very picturesque: it's a pond surrounded by cypress trees, some of which are centenarians, and crossed by a beautiful bridge, the Long Bridge, dating back to 1800. In addition to the gardens, visitors have access to other places of the plantation. Those who wish can take part in the guided tour of the house, which starts right in front of the veranda and lasts about 30-45 minutes.

Slaves played an important role in the plantation activities and the housing units in which they once lived are still visible today in the property. They date back to the 1800s and have recently been renovated to house the exhibition entitled "From Slavery to Freedom": in these small houses both slaves and free black men used to live following the abolition of slavery.

Other plantation's area are entirely dedicated to nature. The Nature Train Tour is a guided tour to discover the natural areas of the property, where many species of animals live freely. Visitors will pass through lakes, small woods and wetlands where crocodiles, turtles, herons and many other animals live. During the tour the guide will give you details about the inhabitants of this natural environment and about the complex history of this place, starting from the period when it was an indian territory. People can also take a boat ride along the Ashley River, where once there were rice fields, which today are only a distant memory.

When it comes to the United States, it's always difficult to say which has been the most beautiful trip. Every place is particular, each state is different from the other. Well, then, how can we compare this trip to the Route 66, the mother of all the travels? Anyway, we will not easily forget the twentytwo days spent in Kauai, Northern California and Oregon, in a paradise called the "american west" which keeps giving us amazing emotions. No, we will not rank it, but we have to tell immediately the truth: the 2017 on the  road has been definitely the most adventurous and adrenaline ever. Kauai, the third island of Hawaii we have visited, has literally catapulted us into another dimension, we have been to the less touristy and natural California, and then... the great state of Oregon, simply the most beautiful american state (Hawaii  are obviously excluded). Yes, we're running too far. Let's start with a flash back: taking advantage of a "price mistake" on the flight  from Nice to San Francisco (300 euros roundtrip) we stop in "Frisco" for a full day before flying back to the Aloha State.

(a day in San Francisco)

We know San Francisco pretty well. Right in "Frisco", in 2011, we felt in love with the United States of America. It was the fifth day of the very first trip to the US and, just to be clear, we wanted to go home, overwhelmed by the immensity that only the american west can offer. Then we arrived in San Francisco  and everything literally changed. We immediately "got sick of America". All in all, a lot of water has flowed under the bridge...

(Cable Car)

We can just spend one day in San Francisco. This means that we have to run. We will see some of the "sacred" places of the most important city in Northern California and add a few goody that we missed during the first trip. The time zone helps us and, despite the usual cold (morning and evening) that makes San Francisco special, we are already ready to walk along the city hills towards Alcatraz Landing, not far from the famous Pier 39, the tourist pier of the city. We are going to visit the most famous prison in the world, Alcatraz. Al Capone and the greatest criminals of the twentieth century have been there ...

The ferry will take you to the island in about fifteen minutes. Alcatraz is a very small island located 1.3 miles north of San Francisco. That's the first stop of the seven places we are going to visit in San Francisco. Despite the unmistakable fog, both the skyline of "Frisco" and the "bay bridge" can be seen from the island.

Ah, Alcatraz, intesa come isola, mette davvero i brividi.

Well, Alcatraz, as a island, really makes you the shivers. Just thinking about the families of the prison's guard who used to live there, just a few yards from the prison, the cold, the fog, is something even more disturbing.

Alcatraz, the prison, can be visited in a couple of hours. At the entrance we receive the audio guide (Italian language) that not only provides all the information about the history of the prison, but also indicates a kind of path to follow to visit it at its best. The silence that reigns inside the walls is impressive. Everyone is listening to the guide and watching the places where the story of the prison was written, what made it legendary and brought it even to Hollywood.

This should have been the most severe security prison in the world, but in 1962, late on the night of June 11 or early morning of June 12, inmates Clarence Anglin, John Anglin, and Frank Morris tucked papier-mâché heads resembling their own likenesses into their beds, broke out of the main prison building via an unused utility corridor, and departed Alcatraz Island aboard an improvised inflatable raft to an uncertain fate. The myth of Alcatraz was born that day ...

If you visit San Francisco, well, you can not miss a stroll along the world famous Pier 39, the city's tourist pier. Built in 1978, it also houses extravagant stores such as the "left-handed shop", restaurants (Bubba Gump and much more), some children's rides and ... the sea lions. Yeah, you can see them too, stranded just down the pier. A little too commercial, to tell the truth, but a must for tourists basically since the day of its construction.

We get a kind of tram right in front of the Pier 39 heading to the intersection between the 17th street and Castro street (45' minutes ride). This is the heart of Castro, one of the best neighborhoods of the city of San Francisco. We are in a location known as the heart of the gay community of the city. The biggest in the United States. Born as a Scandinavian and then Irish immigration district, Castro came to prominence during the 60's when the early hippie community and then the gay community have been attracted by the breath of freedom that has always distinguished the city on the bay.

Soprattutto ad Halloween, "this is the place" se cercate divertimento.

Rainbow colored flags and crosswalks distinguish one of San Francisco's most colorful neighborhoods, able to host rainbow shops, great bakeries and cafes, and especially the famous Art Deco theater. Especially at Halloween, "this is the place" if you are looking for fun.

If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're going to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there…

Scott McKenzie - San Francisco (1967)

Not far from Castro and reachable by a half hour walk, there is another beautiful neighborhood, perhaps the most beautiful: Haight - Asbury, with the beautiful Victorian houses. We head to Alamo Square along Steiner Street: the series of colorful homes called "Painted Ladies" are among the most photographed of the whole city. In front of them there's a beautiful park and many people drink a coffee or read a book with a beautiful view: the "painted ladies". More than 70 movies and TV series have been there and if you want to live in one of that amazing houses you'll have to be very, very rich. In fact, managers of large companies operating in nearby Silicon Valley (like google or microsoft) are the owners of the most beautiful Victorian houses in San Francisco.

Our trip to the heart of San Francisco continues along Grove Street, where we encounter the City Hall, and then Market Street. That's most commercial and tourist area of the city. At the intersection with Powell Street we notice a large number of tourists: they are all here for the Cable Car. Well, better yet, for the Cable Car Turnaround, a platform on which the Cable Car, the famous San Francisco Tramway, rotates and changes direction. If the Pier 39 is too "commercial", here things are going even worse. But, in the end, this is San Francisco!

The Dragon Gate, another San Francisco's symbols, means we've just reached China Town. This is not just a China Town, this is the biggest one outside Asia. It really seems to be in China. Grant Avenue is the tourist destination, with many shops and a lot of visitors, while Stockton Street is definitely more authentic: a kind of "mini Hong Kong" with its products, fish markets, shops and restaurants.

Intanto God bless Ghirardelli.

Walking along the San Francisco's hills is not easy. Definitely that's not easy! You'll end filling tired. This is why we take the bus (line 91, from Sutter St and Kearny St to North Point St & Larkin st) to get to the last stop of the day, Russian Hill. Anyway, before reaching the famous neighborhood there's another quick stop. It's late afternoon and we're getting hungry: which is the best thing to do? Going to Ghirardelli is the answer. Ghirardelli is one of the leading brands of American chocolate, but with clear Italian origins (Rapallo, Liguria). In1852, Mr Domenico Ghirardelli founded the company that, in Ghirardelli Square, a few steps from the sea, now offers a very beautiful shopping center where once the factory was established. Ghirardelli means to us (since the first impact with the United States) "free chocolates".  At the entrance of the shop a nice lady is offering a free taste of a chocolate, we weren't wrong!Well, of course, a second round is a must. Because we're now "Americans", but our blood is still ... Italian. Meanwhile, God bless Ghirardelli.

We can now handle the last climbs of the day. There is still one of the sacred places of "Frisco" to visit, the legendary Russian Hill along Lombard Street, one of the most amazing streets in the world. A series of bizarre and narrow curves that run in just one direction (going down) made it "the world's crookedest street". The street, the vegetation and the beautiful houses at its side call every day thousands of tourist.

It's already evening. Tomorrow, early in the morning, we will have to head to Oakland, waiting for our flight to Kauai, Hawaii. That's the perfect opportunity to experience In-N-Out_burger, one of the many fast foods in the United States. We've been told that they offer a good burger and we can just confirm that. Although "5 Guys" and especially "Shake Shack" are still on top of our ranking. Well, we are not missing the "Golden Gate" bridge : the appointment with the world's most beautiful bridge is just postponed...

2017 XMAS TRIP - THE SOUTH-EAST: Georgia, Northern Florida, South Carolina and much more (day 11: from Charleston to Charlotte: the world guinness record day)

The last day of the quick on the road in Georgia, Northern Florida and South Carolina, which on paper should have been just a transfer from Charleston to Charlotte, gave us many surprises (and unusual places) despite the bad weather that forced us to change our plans. Yes, because there was so much things to see and to do in the schedule (even a national park!), buti it was just too freezing to be in nature. Now, first things first, also because we've already learned that America always knows how to give something special. This was confirmed as soon as we left Charleston. We are in Summerville, about fifty miles east of South Carolina's main city, in a place renowned for its historical character, with 700 buildings registered in the National Register of Historic Places. But if you visit Summerville the reason is basically one and only one: its name is Mason ...

Mason chi?

Mason who? The world largest sweet tea, which is hosted by the town that invented the sweet tea, Summerville (South Carolina). No, we're not crazy. Mason is a kind of religion in the deep South of South Carolina, especially after the National Iced Tea Day held on June 10, 2016, the day when Mason was included in the Guinness World Record not just for his height (15 feet), but also for the amount of tea that can contain (2,524 gallons). Its name, Mason, is a diminutive of "mason jar". So what does it take to brew 2,524 gallons of sweet tea? The recording holding tea was brewed using SCE&G Natural Gas, 210 pounds of local tea from the Charleston Tea Plantation, 1,700 pounds of Dixie Crystals– the sugar of the south and a lot of local support.

No, Mason esiste. Eccome se esiste.

The problem here is that we are not able to find Mason! The indications collected on the internet take us in front of the beautiful "town hall", but we cannot see even a trace of the huge cup of tea. We have no alternative but to enter the offices, a little scared, and ask for the legendary Mason. "Excuse me, we don't want to bother you, but we are looking for ... Mason". "Do not worry, I'll be right there in a minute, in the meantime you can keep these two cups". And our doubts grow all the more intense, is Mason a legend? No, Mason does exist and we're about to meet him!

(Summerville - Town Hall)

It's hidden in a small alley to the right of the town hall. "It 's our pride - says the kindest lady - but you really came up to Summerville, from Italy, for Mason? she asks with her eyes wide open. "Yes, of course". " Well, then you can not leave this town empty-handed. In addition to the cups, take this two T-shirts. These are the ones we sell every year at the festival that attracts a lot of visitors. "In 2018 the festival will be held on the third Thursday of September (20). America never ceases to amaze us.

The emotion for the usual splendid Americans' kindness makes us forget for a few minutes that today, with different weather conditions, was supposed to be the great day of the Congaree National Park, the only national park in South Carolina. We had prepared it in detail, so we want to tell you a little bit about the park, in the hope that it helps future travelers who will venture into the heart of the two "Carolinas". What to see at Congaree National Park? First of all, let's talk about what once was the home and hunting ground of the Congaree Indian tribe, from which the national park takes its name, that today has become a park visited by people who love hiking, bird watching or kayaking. Despite the deforestation of 1900, this park has retained its charm and the beauty of its landscapes, dominated by ancient and gigantic trees, among the highest in North America. The vegetation is amazing, between conifers and cypresses, with enchanting rivers (and streams) that often overflow (in spring and autumn) due to heavy rainfall, but at the same time help the imposing forests to self-feed. The most beautiful trail is definitely the "Boardwalk Loop Trail" (not marked), a 2.4 mile trail on a boardwalk that starts at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center.

Once we reach Columbia, there is another special attraction waiting for us, even if, it must be said, less fascinating than Mason. At 1400 Taylor Street, not far from the downtown of a city definitely bigger than Summerville, there is Busted Plug, which is nothing but the largest hydrant in the world. Within just over 100 km we have bummed the Guinness World Record book twice. Busted Plug is the creation of a local artist and has no particular significance (or link with the city) and is located close to a parking lot. It isn't definitely as appealing as Mason, but it's really really huge!

On the way back to North Carolina and then to Charlotte, you will have the chance to venture back into the often uncontaminated nature of South Carolina. An example is the town of Kershaw, a combination of history and nature, thanks to the Forty Acre Rock - Heritage Preserve. An easy 1.2-mile trail will lead you to the top of this rock that occupies 11 acres and not 40 as the name would imply. You will cross waterfalls, caverns and even a dike before reaching the top, where you can admire a natural pool. Also the town of Lancaster worth a quick stop, just to admire the City Hall and the Court House. The town hall, one of the most beautiful in the entire state, is located in an 1830s residence and is also known as Leroy Springs House (corner between Catawba Street and Gay Street), the Lancaster County House (104 N Main St) has been the site of one of the last witch trials in the United States.

(Lancaster - South Carolina)

Sorprese finite?

Surprises ended? No, they don't! Not far from the border between South and North Carolina, there's the small town of Fort Mill. No. We're not here for its nice downtown, bordered by Main Street, but for another reason. For the third time in a few hours, it is still the Guinness World Record to get the cover of the day.

(downtown Fort Mill, South Carolina)

Dove siamo?

Where are we? Inside a small shop which have become a mecca for spicy lovers, called the Pucker Butt Pepper Company. It is the home of Smokin Ed's Carolina Reaper, which is a super hot pepper developed by Founder, President, Mad-Scientist & Chef Smokin' Ed Currie in his Rock Hill, South Carolina greenhouse.

Measuring over 1.5 million on the Scoville Heat Unit Scale, Smokin' Ed's Carolina Reaper was awarded the Guinness World Record in November of 2013. Something not even remotely imaginable. Just think that the tabasco measures "only" 50,000 SHUs. In 2018, The Carolina Reaper is again at number one in the special ranking. The taste of the various sauces is free of charge. We tried some of them, but we did not dare test the dead Squeez'n, the most spicy of them all.

However, once in Italy, we immediately realized how spicy it can be. How? We tasted what apparently looked like normal honey and chili's peanuts bought at the Pucker Butt Pepper Company. We've never had an experience like that. They were amazing, but we felt a burning sensation in all our body ( even our ears were burning!) for at least ten minutes. If you are planning to go to Fort Mill, South Carolina, do not miss the Pucker Butt Pepper Company!

We end the day in Charlotte, where the next day we will take the flight that take us back home. The "queen city", as it is nicknamed, is the second largest in the United States by number of banks just after New York, and is one of the major financial centers in North America.

But it is also the city of the Nascar, with its "Hall of Fame" and on the whole it looks like one of those metropolis "to live" more than "to visit". Although its downtown (bordered by Tryonn Street), full of skyscrapers, is decidedly cute and photogenic. Another of those American cities which worth a stop, another trip (the twelfth) that made us fall in love with that magical place called United States of America ...
