The last day of a 5.000 miles road trip brings us back to Texas and then to Dallas, where it all began eighteen days before. We have crossed a different America from the one we were used to, made of (just to mention some examples) impervious places like those of south Texas, on the border with Mexico, cities with an irresistible charm like New Orleans or Nashville and characters who were on the front line in the bloody civil rights movement in Alabama and Mississippi in the 1960s. Yet there are still things to tell, even in the last stage. Even in the last 400 km spent in the usual sometimes unbearable heat of the central and southern United States.

GURDON LIGHTS, A CACCIA DI FANTASMI
No, la tappa conclusiva non ha il sapore dell'ultimo giorno di scuola, anche se i primi chilometri spesi tra Arkadelphia e Gurdon (ovest dell'Arkansas), lascerebbe pensare il contrario. Non facciamo altro che pensare alla piccola Gurdon, una cittadina molto strana, soprattutto di sera e di notte. Il motivo? Semplice. Una sfera luminosa inspiegabile appare ad intermittenza di notte sui binari della ferrovia. La leggenda narra che si tratti di un ferroviere colpito da un treno e che ora bussa al mondo ultraterreno. Un'altra storia racconta di un caposquadra ferroviario colpito a morte con una pala da un operaio che voleva più ore di lavoro. Difficile dire quale sia la verità ma, un po' come accade a Marfa (Texas) e di cui abbiamo parlato durante i primi giorni di viaggio, si tratta di un fenomeno paranormale chiamato Gurdon Lights. A differenza di altri fenomeni paranormali sui quali si possono nutrire dubbi, la luce, che cambia spesso colore (solitamente è bianca e blu, a volte arancione), esiste davvero ed è stata documentata da fotografi e televisioni. Ah, inutile dire che spendere la serata di Halloween a Gurdon, Arkansas, non ha davvero prezzo. E sono in tanti ogni 31 ottobre a pensarla in questo modo...
GURDON LIGHTS, CHASING... GHOSTS
Well, the final stage does not feel like the last day of school, even if the first 15 miles spent between Arkadelphia and Gurdon (west of Arkansas), would rather seem to indicate the opposite. We think about nothing except the little town of Gurdon, a very weird town, especially in the evening and at night. The reason? Simple. An unexplained luminous sphere appears intermittently at night on the railroad tracks. Legend tells of a railway worker hit by a train and now knock on the otherworldly realm. Another story tells of a railway foreman shot dead with a shovel by a worker who wanted longer work hours. It's hard to say what the truth is but, a bit like what happens in Marfa, Texas, (we talked about it at the beginning of the journey), it's a paranormal phenomenon called Gurdon Lights. Unlike other paranormal phenomena on which you can have doubts, the light, which often changes color (usually it is white and blue, sometimes orange), really exists and has been documented by photographers and televisions. Well, needless to say that spending the Halloween night in Gurdon, Arkansas, is really priceless. And many people think like that on the 31st of october of each year...

L'Arkansas è uno stato molto particolare. Non offre molto a livello naturalistico, ma ci sarà sempre una piccola cittadina pronta a stupirvi. Da questo punto di vista (solo in questo) ricorda molto il vicino Texas. L'orgoglio della cittadina di Prescott è mostrato nel Nevada County Depot and Museum, ospitato nel restaurato “1912 Missouri-Pacific Railroad Depot”.
Arkansas is a very peculiar state. It does not offer much in the way of natural beauties, but there will always be a small town ready to amaze you. From this point of view it reminds us very much of the state of Texas. The pride of the town of Prescott is shown in the Nevada County Depot and Museum, housed in the restored "1912 Missouri-Pacific Railroad Depot".

Tra gli argomenti espositivi del museo figurano l'acquisto della Louisiana, ceramiche dei nativi americani, primi insediamenti e coloni della contea del Nevada, la guerra civile, l'agricoltura, le ferrovie e le attrezzature antincendio. E' splendido anche il murales che troverete nel centro storico.

Built in 1917, the home that now houses the President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace Home, was owned by his grandparents, Edith Grisham and James Eldridge Cassidy, who took care of him when his mother, Virginia, was working as anesthesiologist in far and distant New Orleans.

TEXARKANA, PER META' IN TEXAS E PER META' IN ARKANSAS
Ritornando al tema delle stranezze, avevamo nei nostri precedenti viaggi visitato i four corners, ovvero il luogo dove s'incontrano quattro stati, ed i three corners, ma mai eravamo stati in una città che per metà è in uno stato e per metà è in un altro. Il primato va alla città di Texarkana che, come si evince dal nome, è per metà in Texas e per metà in Arkansas. A dirla tutta nel nome della città compare anche "ana" che sta per Louisiana, anche se lo stato è distante trenta miglia in direzione sud rispetto a Texarkana. Misteri che solo gli Stati Uniti sanno regalare. A Texarkana, il cui motto è "bella il doppio", è tutto... raddoppiato. E' composta da due comuni separati, con sindaci separati e due gruppi di funzionari della città. I dipartimenti dei vigili del fuoco, l'ispezione del ristoranti e i depuratori invece cooperano.
TEXARKANA, HALF IN TEXAS AND HALF IN ARKANSAS
Returning to the subject of the oddities, during the previous trips we had visited the four corners, the place where four states meet, and the three corners, but we've never been in a city that is located half in a state and half is another one. This record goes to the city of Texarkana which, as can be seen from the name, is a twin city: it's located half in Texas and half in Arkansas. To be honest, in the name of the city also appears "ana" that stands for Louisiana, although the state is thirty miles away. Oddities that only the United States are able to offer. In Texarkana, whose motto is "twice as nice", it's all ... doubled. It consists of two separate municipalities, with separate mayors and two groups of city officials. The departments of firefighters, the inspection of the restaurants and the purifiers instead cooperate.

Le ultime due chicche di giornata riguardano Forth Worth, la sorellina di Dallas. Se vi state chiedendo cosa vedere a Fort Worth, sappiate che avrete materiale per spendere almeno un paio di giorni in città, partendo dalla zona a nord, dove si trova il Bureau of Engraving and Printings (9000 Blue Mound Rd). E' questo, infatti, uno dei due luoghi negli Stati Uniti dove vengono stampati i dollari. Oltre la metà dei "pezzi in verde" in circolazione è prodotta qui. Una passerella, sospesa sul locale consente di assistere al processo, ma ricordatevi che non è possibile portare con voi macchine fotografiche né scattare foto con il proprio cellulare. Il Bureau of Engraving and Printings è aperto dal martedì al venerdì, dalle 8.30 alle 17.30.
VISITFORTH WORTH: DOLLARS AND COWBOYS
The last two goodies of the day concern the city of Forth Worth, Dallas's little sister. There are many places not to be missed in Fort Worth: the first one is the Bureau of Engraving and Printings (9000 Blue Mound Rd). This is, in fact, one of the two places in the United States where dollars are printed. Over half of the "bucks" in circulation are produced here. A walkway suspended above the room allows you to watch the process, but remember that you can not take cameras with you or take pictures with your mobile phone. The Bureau of Engraving and Printings is open Tuesday through Friday from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm.

Il suo downtown è stato recentemente nominato come il più bello degli interi Stati Uniti. Onestamente non sembra neppure di essere nel Nord America. Le due chicche sono la splendida Sundance Squre ed i Fort Worth Water Gardens. Sundance Square (420 main street) è l'anima di downtown: dominata da un bellissimo murales e da decine di piccole fontanelle, è il cuore pulsante della bellissima Fort Worth. Intorno a lei svettano edifici e piccoli grattacieli. Merita una visita anche Crocket Row at West 7th, ricca di ristoranti e molto entertainment. Un’altra zona dove poter cenare o vivere una serata vibrante è lungo Magnolia Avenue, in quella che comunemente viene definita la “funky town” di Fort Worth.
Its downtown was recently named as the most beautiful of the entire United States. Honestly it does not even seem to be in North America. The two goodies are the splendid Sundance Squre and the Fort Worth Water Gardens. Sundance Square (420 main street) is the soul of downtown: dominated by a beautiful murals and dozens of small fountains, it is the beating heart of the beautiful Fort Worth. All around buildings and skyscrapers stand out. Don't miss Crocket Row at West 7th: it's full of restaurants and entertainment. Party animals will also love the "funky town" along Magnolia Avenue.

La maggior attrattiva dei Water Gardens è una grossa vasca con una cascata che scorre lungo piattaforme sulle quali è possibile camminare per poter scendere lungo la vasca stessa, un fonomeno denominato Active Pool. Il Water Gardens fu creato nel 1974 per rivitalizzare e recuperare una zona prima contraddistinta da bordelli e saloon.
But, especially if you are visiting Forth Worth in the summer, under the scorching Texas sun, the oasis you will never want to leave is the Fort Worth Water Gardens (1502 Commerce St). The greatest attraction of the Water Gardens is a large pool with a waterfall that runs along platforms: you can walk on them in order to descend to the pool. They are called Active Pool. The Water Gardens were created in 1974 to revitalize and recover an area previously distinguished by brothels and saloons.

Anche se non si direbbe, Fort Worth è molto grande. E, se la distanza tra Sundance Square ed i Water Gardens non è poi molta, lo stesso non si può dire per la terza e ben più famosa attrazione della città, diciamo pure il luogo che ha messo, almeno per il turista europeo, Fort Worth sulle mappe. Quando si passa da queste parti, infatti, non si può non visitare il Forth Worth Stockyards, dove ad attendervi ci sarà un'atmosfera d'altri tempi.

Passeggiare lungo la E. Exchange Avenue vi permetterà di cogliere l'essenza di quello che Fort Worth ha rappresentato nel west. L'atmosfera country si respira ad ogni angolo anche se, ovviamente, tutto è diventato sin troppo turistico.

Walking along E. Exchange Avenue will allow you to grasp the essence of what Fort Worth has always represented in the west. The country atmosphere can be felt at every corner, even if, obviously, everything has become too touristy.

L'appuntamento da non mancare (come invece abbiamo fatto noi causa incomprensione sull'orario) è la famosissima parata dei Longhorn, la Longhorn Cattle Drive. Alle 11.30 ed alle 16.30 una mandria di Longhorn viene condotta per Exchange Avenue, in ricordo dei tempi che furono, quando anche grazie all'avvento della ferrovia, Forth Worth era un autentico crocevia del west ed in particolare del Chisolm Trail.
The appointment not to be missed (unfortunately we missed it due to a misunderstanding on the schedule) is the famous Longhorn Cattle Drive. At 11.30 am and 4.30 pm a herd of Longhorn is led along Exchange Avenue, in memory of the glory days, when also thanks to the railway, Forth Worth was an authentic crossroads of the west and in particular of the Chisolm Trail.
Mentre camminerete non potrete poi non notate il Texas Trail of Fame, una sequenza di stelle che riporta il nome di un personaggio che ha fatto la storia del west, tra cui ovviamente John Wayne e Will Rogers.

Fort Worth non è solo un luogo per turisti e vecchi amanti del west. Al Livestock Exchange Building si tengono ancora oggi aste (il venerdì) per il bestiame. Dal Longhorn View Deck si possono invece ammirare gli animali nei recinti.
Fort Worth is not just a place for tourists and old west lovers. The Livestock Exchange Building is still holding auctions (on friday) for livestock. From the Longhorn View Deck you can admire animals in the enclosures.

Il Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, istituito in memoria di coloro che hanno onorato il west in Texas, è un altro luogo imperdibile degli Stockyards, così come il White Elephant Saloon (16 E. Exchange Ave) che gli amanti del telefilm Walker Texas Rangers sicuramente ricorderanno. D'accordo, nel telefilm si chiamava Cd’s Bar & Grill, ma è proprio qui che dal 1995 al 2001 sono state girate tutte le scene all'interno del locale che nella serie tv appartiene all'ex Texas Ranger Td Parker. Dite quello che volete, ma il west è sempre il west...
The Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, set up in memory of those who have honored the west in Texas, is another unmissable place of the Stockyards, as well as the White Elephant Saloon (16 E. Exchange Ave) that lovers of the TV show Walker Texas Rangers no doubt remember. All right, it was Cd's Bar & Grill in the tv show, but all the scenes between 1995 and 2001 were shot inside the White Elephant Saloon that in the the show belongs to the former Texas Ranger Td Parker. Say what you want, but that's west, that's always west...
