XMAS in Florida (day 3, Kennedy Space Center)

18 dicembre. Siamo stati indecisi fino all'ultimo, un po' per il costo (50 dollari), un po' perchè non troppo interessati a queste vicende, ma alla fine non abbiamo potuto esimerci: il terzo giorno è dedicato al Kennedy Space Center, la struttura per il lancio di veicoli spaziali della NASA.

December the 18th. We have been undecided until the last minute, because of the cost ($ 50), and because we are not so much interested in these kind of things, but in the end we could not avoid it: the third day is dedicated to the Kennedy Space Center, the structure for the launch of NASA spacecraft.

Siamo sulla costa atlantica della Florida, sostanzialmente al centro, sull'isola Merritt. Impostato il "tom tom", percorriamo la novantina di chilometri che separano Orlando da Cape Canaveral, sino a raggiungere il mare, segnale che si è arrivati a ridosso dell'isola, collegata alla terraferma da un ponte.

We are on the Florida's Atlantic coast, substantially in the middle, at Merritt Island. Set the "tom tom", we are ready tro drive along the ninety kilometers between Orlando and Cape Canaveral, until we reach the sea. It means that we are close to the Merritt island, connected to the mainland by a bridge.

E proprio sul ponte l'auto entrerà in riserva, cosa che a Marco probabilmente non è mai capitata in tutta la sua vita. L'Ale ride, Marco no. Anzi. Ovviamente non ci son benzinai a ridosso del Kennedy e vivrà tutta la giornata (beh giornata, in 4 ore si può benissimo visitare l'intero KSC ...) con l'angoscia: ognuno ha le sue paranoie, lui quella della benzina... (p.s. riusciremo a farla con ancora 17 miglia a disposizione, un'eternità!).

And as soon as we are on the bridge on the car's display appears that the gasoline is almost finished. In entire Marco's life this has never happened! Ale laughs, Marco is in "panic mode". Obviously there are no gas stations near the Kennedy Space Center and Marco will spend the entire day (the visit of the Ksc lasts about 4 hours) thinking about the car!). We finally refuel when we still have 17miles left...

Veniamo al Kennedy. Credevamo fosse uno di quei luoghi per appassionati, di quelli che non ti lasciano tantissimo. Ci sbagliavamo, eccome se ci sbagliavamo.

Let's talk about Kennedy Space Center. We thought it was one of those places for people who really love these kind of things, but we were wrong.

La visita è stata decisamente interessante e, anche senza acquistare ticket aggiuntivi che avrebbero permesso di vivere ancora più da vicino la Nasa, ci ha regalato un'esperienza super.

The visit has been very interesting and, even without purchasing additional tickets that would have allowed us to live even closer the entire NASA, it gave us a super experience.

Per chi fosse intenzionato a visitarlo minuziosamente consigliamo questo link, sicuramente più dettagliato e preparato da veri appassionati (Kennedy Space Center). A coloro i quali basterà solamente un'infarinatura possiamo dire che è un mix tra il un parco divertimenti ed una vera visita ad un luogo "sacro".

For those who want to visit the KSC deeply we suggest to consult this link, certainly more detailed and prepared by real enthusiasts (Kennedy Space Center, italian language) people. For those who  just are like us we can say that the Kennedy Space Center is a mix between an amusement park and a real visit to a "sacred" place.

La parte "parco divertimenti" è, tanto per fare un esempio, legata alla possibilità di diventare astronauti per una decina di minuti e simulare la partenza di uno shuttle (molto divertente) o ancora essere in prima persona piloti di uno Shuttle con il compito di farlo atterrare nel punto giusto (e non è facile, credeteci).

The "theme park" park is, just as an example, related to the possibility of becoming astronauts for about ten minutes and simulate the launch of a shuttle (very funny) or maybe be a driver of a Shuttle and try to land in the right place in the right time (and it's not easy, believe us).

La parte seria della vicenda è l'ammirare riproduzioni di shuttle, navicelle del passato in disuso e molto altro.

The serious part of the story is about admiring reproductions of the shuttle, the spacecraft passed into disuse and much more.

La parte più bella? Quando prenderete il pulman (compreso nel costo del biglietto) e vivrete l'oretta e mezza più bella della giornata.

What is the beautiful moment? When you get the bus (included in the ticket price) and live the best hour and half of the day.

L'autista, simpaticissimo, vi farà anche da guida e vi porterà nel cuore della Nasa.

The driver, very friendly, will be even your guide and take you in the heart of Nasa.

Noi siamo anche "fortunati" perchè riusciamo a vedere la pedana mobile di lancio da dove vengono lanciati razzi e shuttles nello spazio; il giorno seguente avrebbero effettuato l'ultimo lancio del 2014, per questo motivo la pedana è in posizione e noi abbiamo l'onore di vederla!

We are even "lucky" because we can see the treadmill launch from where rockets and shuttles are launched into the space; the next day there would have been the last launch of 2014.

Ed essendo area protetta, la wildlife con un po' di fortuna (alligatori, ma non solo...) è sempre dietro l'angolo.

Being a natural protected area, if you are lucky you can see a lot of wildlife (gators and much more...).

Si vola un po' con la fantasia, ma è normale: si tratta di uno dei luoghi probabilmente più affascinanti degli interi Stati Uniti e se si è in Florida è un appuntamento da non perdere. Dopo tutto sono in tanti che a precisa domanda, da piccoli, avran risposto "da grande voglio fare l'austronauta"... ecco, questa è la chance da non sprecare per diventare, almeno per un giorno, astronauta..

You fly a little bit with fantasy, but it is normal: it is probably one of  the most fascinating places of the entire United States, and if you are in Florida you canìt miss it. After all, too many kinds answer "i'll be an astronaut" when you ask them "what do you want to be? This coud be the only chance to be, at least for a day, an astronaut.

Ma torniamo sulla "terra", c'è una benzina da fare...E dopo aver rasserenato Marco e lasciato il parco (sono le 3 del pomeriggio), possiamo tornare all'Orlando Premium Outlets per completare lo shopping e visitare il vicino Artegon Market place, un centro commerciale fatto di bancarelle locali (appena aperto), in cui Marco proverà cosa voglia dire "grado di piccantezza 10" nella speciale scala riservata ai peperoncini. Meglio non entrare nei dettagli, ma assicuriamo che sarà un'esperienza che non ripeterà molto presto...

Let's come back on"earth", there is a refuel that is waiting for us ... And after calmed down Marco and left the park (it's 3 pm in the afternoon), we can return to the Orlando Premium Outlets to complete our shopping and visit the nearby Artegon Marketplace, a shopping center made of local stalls (just opened), where Marco tries what "degree of hotness 10" means in the special ranking. Better avoid details, but we assured that it is an experience Marco will not do again very soon ...

Vorremmo cenare presso Toby Keith I love this bar (Marco è un super fan del famoso cantante country), ma il locale avrebbe aperto da lì a pochi giorni: poco male, proviamo Fuddruckers (che potete trovare anche in Italia) che non deluderà, anche perchè sei tu in prima persona a decidere i condimenti del tuo panino.

We would like to dine at Toby Keith I love this bar (Marco is a super fan of the famous country singer), but the restaurant is going to open in few days: never mind, let's try Fuddruckers (you can also find it in Italy) that will not let us down, partly because you personally decide the toppings of your sandwich.

Vorremmo fare anche due passi in downtown ma siamo troppo stanchi. Ovviamente, per chi non fosse interessato nello shopping, gli basterà restare lungo la International drive e troverà tutto ciò di cui necessita, sia che si trovi ad Orlando, sia che si trovi nella vicina Kissimmee. Il tempo? come abbiamo già detto, a dicembre la "cipolla" è d'obbligo. In condizioni normali felpa fino alle 10 del mattino e dopo le 17, maglietta nelle ore centrali della giornata.

We would even like to visit downtown but we are too tired. Obviously, for those are not interested in shopping, just stay on International Drive and you'll find everything you need: it doesn't matter if you are in Orlando or in the nearby Kissimmee. The weather? As we said, in December the "onion" is a must. With average conditions, you should wear sweatshirt until 10 am and after 17 pm, shirt in the middle of the day.
