The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, as often happens in the American west, take you with its steam railroad back in time, along a stretch that smells of west. More than 64 miles of beautiful nature on the border between New Mexico and Colorado, in a landscape which really is the "land of enchantment".
La magia del "Cumbres" nasce poco dopo il 1880, quando la Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad decise di estendere la linea ferroviaria da Alamosa sino a Durango, nel Colorado: il treno era regolarmente preso dai minatori che lavoravano lungo le San Juan Mountains, la Toltec Valley ed il monte Cumbres, alto più di 3mila metri.
The magic of "Cumbres & Toltec" was born shortly after 1880, when the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad decided to extend the railway line up from Alamosa, Colorado to Durango, Colorado: the train was regularly taken by the miners who worked in the San Juan mountains, mainly around Durango and Silverton.
Il nome Cumbres & Toltec nasce proprio qui. Interrotto nel 1951 il servizio passeggeri (e nel 1968 anche quello "merci"), nel 1970 riaprì come attrazione turistica, capace di far innamorare sin da subito gli americani che intraprendevano un viaggio nell'impervio Nuovo Messico. Perchè solo gli americani? Perchè ancora oggi, purtroppo, il Nuovo Messico è uno stato poco conosciuto dal turista europeo ma, tra quelli poco "famosi", è sicuramente il più affascinante. Il "land of Enchantment" appunto.
The name Cumbres & Toltec was born right here and comes from the Toltec Valley and the Cumbres Mountain. The passenger service was interrupted in 1951 and reopened in 1970 as a tourist attraction, and many americas immediately felt in love. A journey in New Mexico is a must for them. Why only them? Because even today, unfortunately, New Mexico is a partially unknown state for tourists coming from Europe but among those "not so famous american states", New Mexico is certainly the most fascinating. The "Land of Enchantment".
La Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad corre ora tra Chama, Nuovo Messico e Antonito, Colorado. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad runs now between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado through the Cumbres Pass and the Toltec throat and today is the highest narrow-gauge steam railway in the United States. Only in the Andes or in the beautiful Scottish and Welsh landscapes you might find something like that.
I treni partono ogni mattina sia da Chama (New Mexico) che da Antonito (Colorado), ma se vi trovate da queste parti molto probabilmente è perchè state visitando più il New Mexico (Santa Fe dista solamente 100 miglia da Chama) che il Colorado, le cui bellezze principali sono situate in altre aree dello stato. Chama sarà dunque la vostra cittadina di riferimento, un paesino di poco più di mille anime che non ci dimenticheremo mai.
Trains leave every morning from Chama (New Mexico) and Antonito (Colorado). But if you're here it's because you are probably visiting New Mexico (Santa Fe is just 60 miles far from Chama) instead of Colorado, whose main attractions are located in other areas of the state. Chama will therefore be your reference town, a village of just over a thousand inhabitants that we will never forget.
Durante tutto il periodo primaverile-estivo (nel 2016 le date sono le seguenti: dal 28 maggio al 23 ottobre) migliaia di turisti e non solo affollano le locomotive del Cumbres. Durante la nostra visita nel 2013, infatti, abbiamo conosciuto moltissimi appassionati di treni: per loro passare almeno una volta nella vita dal Cumbres & Toltec è un must, anzi forse qualcosa in più. A Osier, a metà strada, entrambi i treni si fermano affinché venga offerto il pranzo (incluso nel prezzo) ai turisti.
Throughout the season (in 2016 the dates are as follows: from May 28th to October 23rd) thousands of tourists rides the train. During our visit in 2013 we also met a lot of fans of trains: for them ride the Cumbres & Toltec at least once in a lifetime is a must, or perhaps something more. In Osier, midway, both trains stop and lunch is offered to visitors.

La linea attraversa il Rio Grande e Carson National Forest e incontrerete anche strutture storiche lungo il percorso, tra cui due tunnel, ponti, case e pozzi d'acqua. Soprattutto nel periodo primaverile-autunnale, i colori sono incredibili.
The railroad crosses the Rio Grande and Carson National Forest and also encounter historic structures along the way, including two tunnels, bridges, houses and water towers. Colors are amazing especially in spring and fall season.
