2016 trip - Route 66, Hawaii, Seattle and much more (day 11: Alamogordo - Albuquerque)

STAGE PROFILE
STATES: New Mexico
CITIES: Alamogordo - Albuquerque 370 km
STOPS: breaking bad tour

We left the historical route 66 two days ago and we're already missing it. We miss when we're looking for the right road and looking for the right places but also the feeling that only the mother road can give. We'll get back to the route in the end of today's stage, in Albuquerque, the "New Mexico Big City". It's going to be a "pretty boring" story for someone, so we will try to provide also some details about  "what to see and do in New Mexico" and in particular in the area of Albuquerque and Santa Fe, These are two cities we have already visited in 2013: you can find infos here (Texas and New Mexico). Why could this be a boring story? It's very simple, because once we arrived in the city of Albuquerque, we decided to do the "breaking bad tour" and visit places that have made the history of the most popular TV series of the last decade. However, the "land of enchantment "can not be reduced only to Breaking Bad. and, In southern New Mexico you can not miss the Old Mesilla in Las Cruces, a village with strong Mexican colors. Because Mexicans have really been here and, if you'd like a real a slice of life in New Mexico, this is your place. Going north just admir the thermal waters of a city with a special name, Truth or Consequences, also famous for the museum of Geronimo. Or, once you are in Socorro, the Very Large Array, giant telescopes placed in the ground. South of Albuquerque, alongside the rio grande river, we finally found the route 66 again. If the GPS is doing its job, you will find in the Isleta Pueblo the San Agustin de la Isleta Mission, another typical church dating back to the Spanish domination period.

No, we haven't forgotten about Breaking Bad. Our love for this beautiful state forces us to tell some gems for those who are planning a trip to the "land of enchantment". Albuquerque means, in fact, old town with several buildings in adobe style, means the Sandia Mountains with its wonderful Sandia Peak Tramway.

Albuquerque means route 66, which runs in the middle of the city, and means especially the Baloon Fiesta Festival, which is "just" the most photographed event in the world. Every October, for a week, hundred and hundred of hot air balloons rise into the most beautiful sky in the world, creating a stunning backdrop. If you are unable to attend this event that attracts millions of people every year, there is a fun museum of balloons which are a kind of religion here in New Mexico. Children will definitely have fun at the Anderson Abruzzo International Baloon Museum simulating a baloon rising.

And the more you go north, the more New Mexico becomes beautiful. The turquoise trail that leads to Santa Fe through the towns of Madrid and Cerrillos (a little bit ghost town, a little bit villages of artists) is one of the most beautiful scenic bways of the state, and the KASHA-Katuwe TENTS ROCK NATIONAL MONUMENT is probably the most beautiful park among those unknown (the reference city is Cochiti, trails are two: the first one is 2 miles long and called Cave Loop and the second one is 1.2 miles long. called Slot Canyon Trail). The northwest of the state is the best place where admire the stars at night and you can also visit Los Alamos (where the first atomic bomb was created) with its museum and Pecos with the remains of an ancient civilizations, In northeast of New Mexico you can visit Taos and especially the little-known town of Chama. The Scenic Railroad Cumbres and Toltec Scenic which takes you to Colorado starts from here. In 2013 it has been one of the nicest experiences of our trip. And Santa Fe? We would need a book to describe the beauty of this unique city...

We've waited for this moment for a long time and now here we are! It's finally "breaking bad time". But first a quick stop at the Albuquerque most famous diner, the route 66 diner.

In Albuquerque you can also join a Breaking Bad  private tour and locals have confirmed that many aficionados come here every day just for this. They come from all over the world. Our tour is "self guided" and starts from the south of the city, not far from Isleta Mission, right along the old strecth of the historic Route 66. We are in the parking lot which becomes very famous in the show. Behind it there is  "Twisters", which looks like a fast food like many others. Wrong. Do you remember Gus Fring and his Los Pollos Hermanos?

Everybody is watching us and probably saying "here they are, again people with the breaking bad disease. They look like foreigners". Yes they are right, we have the disease and we're even excited. A paint on the wall reminds us that yes, this is "Los Pollos Hermanos" (4257, Isleta Boulevard - Albuquerque).

Driving along the rio grande we notice a beautiful residential area: in this part of Albuquerque lies the house of Jesse Pinkman, or better his parents house, where in the first few seasons he used to park his camper (322 16th St SW - Albuquerque).

During a real breaking bad tour you can't miss a quick stop at the laundry. This is the place where Walter, Jesse and Gus did carried out their "activity". It really exists and we could even visit it but unfortunately today it's saturday and the laundry is closed (1617 Candelaria Rd NE - Albuquerque).

Passiamo anche dall'autolavaggio, enorme. E anche qui riaffiorano ricordi su ricordi, mentre chi lavora qui, ancora una volta, ci guarda sorridendo (9516 Snow Heights Circle - Albuquerque).

We also visit the car wash. It's huge. Many memories in our mind while workers watch us and smile.

Saul Goodman's office is located in a ugly neighborood. He is the legendary lawyer who then will become the guest star of the breaking bad spin-off Better Call Saul. Another masterpiece. As in the show, it's a Spa and Nail.

Driving along the Sandia hills, northeast of Albuquerque, we encounter the next destination. In the most charming district of Albuquerque is located another masterpiece of Breaking Bad, Hank's house. Hank is Waltr White's brother in law and DEA agent ((4901 Cumbre del Sur Ct - Albuquerque).

However it's still missing the icing on the cake, the highlight of breaking bad tour. We are in the north of the city and this address, the 3828 Piermont Street, has become famous all over the world. We approach in quietly because we know that the land lady doesn't like curious and Breaking Bad lovers: you can stay close to the house only if you're attending an organized tour. We had read on the internet that she stays all day long sitting on a chair inside the garage in a threatening manner. They were right. The garage is open and she is there. We leave the car where Walter used to leave its own: well, we forgot to say that this is one of the most famous house of the United States, Walter White's house. In here it has been written the history of Breaking Bad.
