2017 XMAS TRIP - THE SOUTH-EAST: Georgia, Northern Florida, South Carolina and much more (day 8 - Road to Charleston)

Passing Talmadge Memorial Bridge heading north, along the Speedway Boulevard, you enter South Carolina. It is the first time for us, even if we've heard many enthusiastic stories of those who visited the "two Carolinas". The expectations are therefore high and, despite the bitter cold that has in fact influenced the last part of the on the road, South Carolina has not disappointed the expectations. The province of South Carolina (the name was wanted by King Charles II of England in honor of his father, Charles I) was one of the thirteen colonies that declared its independence from Britain during the American Revolution and the first state which left the Union to found the Confederate States of America.

The fact that confirms that part of the American history has been written in those areas, there is the Penn Center, which is the site of one of the first schools in the country for freed slaves and one of the most significant historical African American cultural institutions existing today. This is the heart of the island of St Helena, within a series of islands also known as "Sea Islands" positioned just above Hilton Head. The 50-acre campus of the Penn School (Penn School Historic District), includes nineteen buildings including the Gantt Cottage: it also housed Martin Luther King. In 1974 the Penn School Historic District was named a national historical landmark.

The main city of this area, along with Port Royal (famous for the Port Royal Farmers Market) is definitely Beaufort, which in fact is also the most interesting to visit. Located on the island of Port Royal, in the heart of the Sea Islands, it is renowned for its scenic location and for preserving its antebellum architecture. The city has been featured in the New York Times, and named "Best Small Southern Town" by Southern Living, a "Top 25 Small City Arts Destination" by American Style, and a "Top 50 Adventure Town" by National Geographic Adventure.

(Beaufort, South Carolina)

The Henry Chambers Waterfront Park and the Old Point neighborhood with its Victorian houses are particularly scenic. However, if in your lifetime you have heard about the town of Beaufort, South Carolina, at least once, the reasons are mainly two and do not concern the beauty of its architecture. And not even the panoramic views.

(downtown Beaufort, South Carolina)

Sparlare e Soldato Jane.

The first one is that the city has given birth to Joe Frazier, the great opponent of Muhammad Ali, the second one (perhaps even more suggestive) is due to the fact that Forrest Gump's best friend, Bubba, was born and raised just here. We are talking about the movie Forrest Gump, of course. Beaufort has also been the setting or the inspirational setting for several novels by long-time resident Pat Conroy and a popular filming location for major motion pictures, including The Big Chill, The Prince of Tides, The Great Santini,Something To Talk About and G.I. Jane. And Forrest Gump, of course.

Driving along the Trask Parkway, once you reach the junction with the "17", called Charleston Highway, turn left and then immediately turn right, along the Old Sheldon Church Road, in the town of Sheldon. This is a quick, but highly recommended stop for those travelling between Charleston and Beaufort.  After a few miles, on the right, you will find the Old Sheldon Ruin Church, the remains of a church destroyed during the Independence War.

The best viewed is offered in the early morning when dew or fog are blanketing the site: the ruin is a hauntingly beautiful relic that captures the best of the Lowcountry's natural beauty and deep history in one spot. This spot is very popular for photographers and usually is not too crowded.  There is no admission fee, but there are also no facilities or shops nearby. It's the last day of december (31st), which means that we are the only ones to visit the Old Sheldon Ruin Church.

If you love silence and the chance to take pictures in peace, you've already guessed that the on the road we are talking about (as it was also for Oregon), could really be the one for you ...

Before getting to the metropolitan area of Charleston, a twenty-mile detour will take you to the heart of another very fascinating area, Edisto Island. Following the "174" (Edisto Island Scenic Byway) you can venture into the rural South Carolina, made up of beautiful farms and many churches.

Come vi abbiamo già anticipato, però, il 31 dicembre abbiamo trovato tutto chiuso, nonostante la nostra "lista" dei possibili stop era davvero molto lunga. Ve ne segnaliamo qualcuno con i relativi indirizzi: Greechie Boy Market and Mill (nella foto) dove producono cereali, farro etc (2995 SC-174, Edisto Island)...

As we said earlier, however, on 31 December almost anything is closed, despite our "list" made by possible stops is really very long. For example Greechie Boy Market and Mill where cereals, spelled etc are produced (2995 SC-174, Edisto Island) ...

(Greechie Boy Market)

...Kings Farm and market (verdura), Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island and Graveyard (risalente al 1685), Old First Baptist Church and Graveyards (del 1818), Zion Reformed Episcopal Church (del 1890) e la George and Pink’s Fresh Vegetables Stand (7971 Edingsville Beach Rd).

At the end of the route, before you get back, there's a very strange tree (on the right) called Mystery Tree Marsh, decorated with strange objects. To be honest, certainly not the most beautiful tree in the world ...

(Mystery Tree Marsh)

Charleston is just a step away and two more disappointment come from the Stono Market and Tomato Shed Cafe (closed), one of the icons of the area (a farm/restaurant) and especially from what should have been the great attraction of the day, the Charleston Tea Plantation. This is the only Tea plantation in the entire United States, where tours (free of charge) are offered every fifteen minutes (6617 Maybank Hwy, Wadmalaw Island).

However, it remains closed on December 31st. We've learned another lesson. Planning trips on Christmas Eve and on the last year might be a bad idea.

Anzi...

The New Year's Eve is definitely interesting: it has been our first New Year's Eve in the United States, in the city of Charleston. Honestly, a little different than we expected, aware of how Americans are skilled at creating set design around an event. Just think about the 4th of july or "Halloween". No fireworks, no big party around the square, probably due to the bad weather (it was 28 degrees). There were also very few restaurants that offered a classic New Year's dinner menu and many people left the restaurant before midnight. So far from what we're used to in Italy. This is typical of Americans who do not particularly like being at the table in a restaurant for a long time. Instead we noticed a lot of crowded bars in downtown Charleston. We had dinner at The Darling Oyster Bar in the heart of Downtown, trying anything to make the night lasts longer waiting for midnight comes, such as ordering one dish at a time and sharing it. It was our debut with oysters and, overall, all dishes (Creole Shrimp, baked oysters, cod fried basket and key lime pie) were very good. An unusual New Year's eve, but not less beautiful.
