USA - the deep south: Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Arkansas (day 17: from Nashville to Memphis. The Natchez Trace Parkway, Tupelo, The National Civil Rights Museum & Beale Street)

Nashville and Memphis, the two major cities of Tennessee are separated by 212 monotonous miles, just under 350 km, running in the heart of the state along Interstate 40. However, the vast majority of those who visit the two icons of the Volunteer State forget to make a 100 miles detour along one of the most scenographic roads of the central lane of the United States, the Natchez Trace Parkway. Its central feature is a two-lane parkway road that extends 444 miles (715 km) from Natchez, Mississippi, to Nashville, Tennessee. It crosses three states: Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee.

(Double Arch Bridge - Natchez Trace Parkway)

The road, although not as scenic as the ones you will find in some areas of the American west, is a paradise for those who love nature: it follows roughly the path of what was once the "Old Natchez Trace", a travel corridor used both from the Native Americans (Kaintucks), and then from the European settlers, merchants of slaves, soldiers and even future presidents. It's not so hard to follow it: it is enough not to miss the Loveless Cafè (south-west of Nashville), one of the most beautiful Cafes of the entire Natchez Trace Parkway. A few dozen meters after the cafè a turn on the left will take you to the Parkway which, being managed by the National Park Service, is not very different from the roads you usually travel while visiting the US National Parks. The Natchez Trace Parkway is also an "All American Roads".

(view from the double Arch Bridge - Natchez Trace Parkway)

We traveled about 120 of the 444 miles of the Natchez Trace Parkway, substantially till the town of Tupelo, Mississippi, and then change route towards Memphis. And we are telling you about these 120 miles step by step, referring to the official site if you want to continue to Natchez and looking for places not to be missed along the Natchez Trace Parkway (https://www.nps.gov/natr/ index.htm).

No, stavolta la risposta è davvero facile. O, come dicono gli americani, born and raised.

TUPELO, ELVIS PRESLEY' BIRTHPLACE TOWN
For once you do not have to ask "what to see in Tupelo, Missippissi". No, you don't. This time the answer is really easy. Everything in this rural town of Mississippi stand and fall with the music legend Elvis Presley, born here and raised here in Tupelo, Mississippi.

(Elvis Presley Birthplace, Tupelo - Mississippi)

But the great attraction of Tupelo is obviously the Elvis Presley Birthplace (306 Elvis Presley Dr. Tupelo), a modest two-bedroom house where Elvis was born on January 8, 1835. The house, built by his father with $ 180, is located within the Elvis Presley Park, where you can also admire the Assembly of God Church that the little Elvis attended while in Tupelo and the famous statue "Elvis at 13".

(Elvis Presley Birthplace -  Elvis' house)

Admission to the Elvis Presley Birthplace is free, but if you want to visit all the buildings of the rock'n roll king's childhood, you'll have to pay a fee. The complete tour (house, museum and church) cost 18 dollars, the house tour costs 8 dollars.

When you think about Memphis, the first thing that comes to your mind is definitely Graceland, Elvis' majestic house. While in town, just ask a local, maybe an african american, which is "a place not to be missed in Memphis". The answer will always be one and only: with his finger he will indicate the number 450 at Mulberry Street. For what it's worth, we totally agree with that...

(Lorraine Motel, Memphis)

The tour into the places that have made the history of civil rights of African Americans, in fact, could just end in Memphis. It is here, in fact, that still stands the motel that has changed forever the history of the United States, the Lorraine Motel.

(Lorraine Motel, Memphis)

There's no way you haven't ever heard of what is still a place of pilgrimage for thousands and thousands of African Americans coming from all over the North American continent. It is here, in fact, that on April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King was assassinated. The history of African Americans of America turned forever that day.

(Lorraine Motel, Memphis)

During the segregation era, Lorraine Motel was one of the few places in Memphis where blacks and whites could meet and Dr. King was a regular guest. It was 6.01 pm when the reverend came out of the balcony of his room, the 306, and was hit in the head by a 30-06 caliber bullet. The shot came from the building located on the opposite side of the street: James Earl Ray was indicted for the murder and sentenced to 99 years in prison,

HOW TO VISIT THE NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM
Today both the Lorraine Motel and the building from where the fatal shot came from, are part of the National Civil Rights Museum. The museum traces the history of civil rights of African Americans, with an eye to the obviously important role played by Martin Luther King.

(National Civil Rights Museum at Lorraine Motel, Memphis)

Upstairs you can see the room 306, left as it was the day when King's life was broken. You will then find objects and habits that have marked the last moments of Reverend's life: a daily newspaper, an empty breakfast cup, an unmade bed.

(Room 306 - National Civil Rights Museum at Lorraine Motel, Memphis)

The museum also owns the Young and Morrow Building at 422 Main Street, where you'll have
a view of the room at the former boarding house from which Ray is believed to have fired the fatal shot. Admission tickets to the National Civil Rights Museum is $ 16, parking is free for all those visiting the museum.

MEMPHIS, THE SOUL OF BLUES
Except for some lover of American oddities, which will unlikely miss the 11 am and 5 pm meeting at the Peabody Hotel, where the daily Peabody Duck March takes place (yes, you got it right), the tourists pour along Beale Street, the Memphis version of the Nashville's Broadway.

(Beale Street, Memphis)

Molto diversa, ovviamente.

It's very different, of course, compared to the Broadway. Here you play the blues, which has always been the soul of Memphis. Today, the blues clubs and restaurants that line Beale Street are a big draw for tourists, while outdoor festivals and concerts periodically bring large crowds into the streets and surrounding areas.
