venerdì 7 settembre 2018

USA - the deep south: Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Arkansas (day 18: from Memphis to Little Rock: visit Graceland, Elvis' majestic mansion)

The King.

Whether you are a fan or not, whether you have experienced the myth of the one who has changed the history of music forever or just curious, while in Memphis, Tenneesse, you will not be able to resist the charm of Elvis Presley. And, when you think about the king of rock'n roll, it becomes automatic a southbound detour (ten miles) till reaching an area not so interesting and "safe" except for the fact that there's a residence visited every year by a disproportionate number of people, as many as 600 thousand. From fans of the first hour to the young people intrigued by the first great hero of world music. Everyone comes to 3734 Elvis Presley Boulevard to admire Graceland, the residence of Elvis Aaron Presley. The King.

VISIT GRACELAND - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
You can select four different types of tour, different from others in terms of duration and prices. The advice is to book the tour in advance through the Graceland website (www.graceland.com). Every tour, it must be said, is pretty expensive. The Graceland mansion tour only is the most popular tour and also the cheapest ($ 41). If you want you can also visit the area dedicated to Elvis airplanes with a few extra bucks (5 dollars). The Elvis Experience Tour ($ 61) offers a substantial upgrade compared to just visiting Elvis's home and airplanes. Booking this tour you can, in fact, visit the Elvis Presley's Memphis Entertainment Complex and see the "modest" Elvis' cars at the Presley Motors Automobile Museum, The Entertainer Career Museum and some very special exhibitions on the life of the king of rock ' n roll. With the vip tickets (ranging from $ 99 for the ELVIS Entourage Vip to the $ 174 of the Ultimate Vip Tour), you will simply feel like ... living one day as Elvis.

(Graceland - Tickets Center)

We opted for the Graceland Mansion Tour Only with the addition of the airplanes section ($ 46). A shuttle will take you to 3734 Boulevard Elvis Presley, where the majestic residence of Elvis stands.

This is not a guide tour, but an audio guide tour. Elvis bought the house in the early months of 1957 for about $ 100,000, a residence that was later renamed "Graceland" in honor of Toof's daughter, Grace, who inherited what once was a farm owned by Mr. Toof. Needless to say, of course, that Graceland is the second most famous residence in the United States after the White House.

(Graceland - Back of the house)

Graceland was opened to the public in 1982 and immediately became a place of pilgrimage for fans and just curious. However, not all rooms in the house can be visited, such as the bedroom of Elvis upstairs and the main suite and the bathroom where he was found dead on August 16, 1977.

The living room, which has always been a symbol of Graceland and the kitchen, which Elvis always wanted full of some very special foods and drinks, can be visited. There is no shortage of oddieties: for example a ... racquetball field and the famous "Jungle Room".

(Jungle Room - Graceland)

Other house environments that you will visit during the tour are the "TV room", which also includes a small bar, the "gold room" (a corridor where the numerous gold records and awards are exposed), and the "music room".

The tour ends in the back of the house. You'll see what once was the farm and the "meditation garden", designed by architect Bernard Grenadier. Elvis, his parents Gladys and Vernon, and the grandmother are buried right there.

(Elvis Presley's Meditation Garden)

After the visit of the residence, the free shuttle will drive you back to the visitor center where you can see the area dedicated to the two Elvis Presley airplanes. Elvis bought a 1958 Convair 880  in April 1975 and named it Lisa Marie in honor of his daughter. It is the most famous among private planes. Inside the plane you will find a lounge, a conference room, a private bedroom, gold-plated safety belts, suede chairs, leather-covered tables, 24-carat gold sinks and more. The smallest jet is the Lockheed Jet Star.

The music tour of Memphis can not be considered concluded without paying tribute to the most famous recording studio in the world, the Sun Studio (706 Union Ave, $ 14). It was here that, among others, Elvis recorded "that's all right, Mama" and "Blue moon of Kentucky" at a cost of $ 4 each. The Sun Studio are the last gem that the city of Memphis gives us. Once you leave the city of the blues and cross the Mississippi River, you enter Arkansas, the seventh state of the road trip in the southern United States.

WHAT TO SEE IN LITTLE ROCK, BILL CLINTON'S BIRTHPLACE
Little Rock, named after a rock formation on the south bank of the Arkansas River, an authentic landmark during the early explorations, is the main city of one of the least visited states by the European tourist, the great state of Arkansas. That, to be honest, would also be a pretty state (its nickname is "the natural state"), but not in itssouth- central lane, the one that connects Memphis and Tennessee with Texas and then Dallas. If you're looking for nature beauties, you'll have to go north-west. There are few "things to see and do" in central Arkanas, except for the the Hot Springs National Park. That area is very beautiful. Here everything it's all about the state's main city, Little Rock, known in our latitudes especially because it's the birthplace of the 42nd president of the United States, Bill Clinton. The main attraction of Little Rock is the William J. Clinton Presidential Center, which houses the largest collection of presidential history archives, consisting of approximately 80 million pages of documents and 2 million photographs. In addition to a reconstruction of the oval study (1200 President Clinton Ave, 10 dollars). But the most attentive, or those like us are looking for an authentic piece of America's history, will associate the main city of Arkansas with the Little Rock Central High School.

As with Mulberry Street in Memphis, 1550 Park Street, in Little Rock, is not an address you can easily forget. It is here, in fact, that in 1957, the governor and numerous white-faced citizens attempted to prevent nine black students from enrolling at Central High School, causing the reaction of the president Dwight Eisenhower. He was forced to send the army to quell tensions. Clashes lasted 3 weeks but in the end they were allowed to attend the school. The Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site Visitor Center, located just over one hundred meters from the school, will prepare you for a visit to one of the symbols of the fight against racial segregation in the United States.

There are not so many things to do and see in Little Rock, which is why we chose to spend just a few hours in the city. If you have plenty of time on your hands, start exploring Little Rock from the downtown area: you'll see the Arkansas State Capitol (Woodlane & Capitol Avenue) and the Old State Museum (West Markham), the oldest (1836 to 1911) surviving capitol building west of the Mississippi River. It was the site of the 1861 secession debate, as well as the 1868 Constitutional Convention when delegates agreed to ensure voting rights for freedmen and establish public schools. The legislative chambers have been restored and now host exhibitions on the history and culture of Arkansas.

(Arkansas State capitol - Little Rock)

Take a stroll along the Arkansas River and stop by the River Market District with its shops, galleries, restaurants and pubs, which extends over W Markham St and President Clinton Ave. Once you leave downtown, be sure to visit The Old Mill, an old mill that appears in the opening scene of the movie Gone with the wind (1939).  The mill, with a water wheel constructed of concrete but treated to look like wood, is surrounded by a road resembling an old wagon road and a rustic footbridge made of black locust tree limbs. The park is open to the public and a great setting for photographs or a picnic lunch. Sculptured concrete work known as faux bois, includes numerous bridges, benches, baskets, etc., sculpted to look like real wood.
