The journey to discover the beautiful world of Havasu Falls has just begun. Yes, because we are still far from reaching the village of Supai and starting the real adventure along five of the most beautiful waterfalls you can admire in the North American continent. The reading of the first post (http://duecuoriperviaggiare.blogspot.com/2019/08/the-hiking-trip-arizona-colorado-and.html) will surely have intrigued you regarding this little gem of Arizona and, in all likelihood, there are two questions you've been asking yourself: how to to get to the Havasu Falls and how to visit them. In this post we will continue to tell you about the organization and the preparations that lasts almost a year, but we will focus mainly on the different way to visit this paradise, more or less economical and more or less fascinating.
COME SI RAGGIUNGONO LE HAVASU FALLS - L'HAVASUPAI TRAIL
Come abbiamo già detto, Supai Village è il più remoto ed inaccessibile villaggio degli Stati Uniti. E di conseguenza anche raggiungere le mitiche Havasu Falls non è così semplice. L'opzione più gettonata ed anche la più affascinante è quella di percorrere le 8 miglia dell'Havasupai Trail che, dal parcheggio dell'Hualapai Hilltop conduce al villaggio Supai. Il trail, nel dettaglio, lo racconteremo nel prossimo post, qui ci concentriamo sui pro ed i contro di questa scelta e sulle ulteriori possibilità per raggiungere il villaggio
HOW TO GET TO THE HAVASU FALLS - THE HAVASUPAI TRAIL
As we have already said, Supai Village is the most remote and inaccessible village in the United States. And therefore it's not so simple to get to the amazing Havasu Falls. The most popular and most fascinating option is to hike the 8 miles of the Havasupai Trail which leads from the Hualapai Hilltop parking lot to the Supai village. We will tell about the trail in the next post, here we focus on the pros and cons of this choice and on the other options.

Per raggiungere l'Hualapai Hilltop, a prescindere dall'hotel dove avrete soggiornato la notte precedente (Hualapai lodge o Grand Canyon Cavern Inn), dovrete percorrere le 60 miglia (una deviazione dalla route 66) lungo la asfaltata Indian Route 18, la strada che condurrà all'Hualapai Hilltop. Sembra un controsenso, ma queste 60 miglia potrebbero essere la parte più problematica del vostro viaggio alle Havasu. I motivi? Diversi. In primis non c'è traccia di civiltà, neppure servizi di ogni genere. Dovrete avere autonomia per le 120 miglia (60 per l'andata, 60 per il ritorno), cibo ed acqua sufficienti non solo per il viaggio in auto, ma anche per le 8 miglia che dovrete percorrere a piedi sino al villaggio. E, in ultimo, si tratta di una zona "open range" e non sono rare le auto che colpiscono mucche od altri animali che vivono lungo queste 60 miglia.
If you wanna get to the Hualapai Hilltop, regardless of where you've stayed the night before (Hualapai lodge or Grand Canyon Cavern Inn), you will have to drive the 60 miles (a detour from the Route 66) of the paved Indian Route 18, the road that leads to the Hualapai Hilltop. It seems a contradiction, but these 60 miles could be the most dangerous part of your trip to Havasu for many reasons. First of all, there is no trace of civilization, not even services of any kind. You must have autonomy for 120 miles (out and back), enough food and water not only for these 120 miles, but also for the 8 miles you will have to hike in order to get to village. And finally, it is an "open range" area and cars that strike cows or other animals that live along these 60 miles are not rare.

Spesso gli incidenti sono addirittura mortali. Il consiglio è dunque è di essere molto prudenti, rispettare i limiti e, se possibile, evitare di percorrere la Indian Road durante le ore notturne. A due miglia dall'Hualapai Hilltop verrete fermati per un controllo da un agente Supai, proprio come accade vicino al confine con il Messico con la Border Patrol. Vi verrà chiesta la prenotazione e vi ispezionerà l'auto. Ricordatevi che non sono ammessi alcolici all'interno della riserva Supai. L'Hualapai Hilltop è l'ultimo stop: troverete i bagni, un container (ufficio del ranger), la stalla per cavalli e asini ed ovviamente l'ampio parcheggio. I furti o danneggiamenti alle auto sono molto rari, ma vale ovviamente sempre la regola di non lasciare oggetti di valore nella propria auto.
Accidents are often even fatal. The advice is therefore to be very careful, to respect the limits and, if possible, to NOT drive down the Indian Road at night night. You'll be stopped for a check point by a Supai agent 2 miles before the Hualapai Hilltop, just as happens near the border with Mexico with the Border Patrol. You will be asked for a reservation and then the officer will inspect the car. Remember that alcohol is not allowed on the Supai reservation. The Hualapai Hilltop is the last stop: there's a restroom, a container (ranger office), the stable for horses and mules and of course the large parking lot. Thefts or damage to cars are very rare.: anyway do not leave any valuable in your car.
COME SI RAGGIUNGONO LE HAVASU FALLS - CAVALLI E MULI
Visitare le Havasu Falls non è economico (più avanti parleremo dei costi legati alle tasse d'ingresso ed al pernottamento), ma fino a prova contraria camminare è ancora... gratuito. Con la seconda e soprattutto con la terza opzione non solo viene meno un po' di magia, ma i costi cominciano a lievitare. Il secondo modo per raggiungere il villaggio Supai è affidarsi alla tribù Supai che mette a disposizione cavalli e muli per percorrere le 8 miglia che separano l'Hualapai Hilltop dal villaggio. Per arrivare a cavallo al villaggio, dovrete essere in grado di cavalcare o almeno avere le basi generali (salire, scendere, fermarlo etc). Non sarete assistiti e non dovrete pesare più di 250 pounds. Il bagaglio non potrà pesare più di 20 pounds.
HOW TO GET TO THE HAVASU FALLS - HORSES AND MULES
Visiting the Havasu Falls is not cheap (later we will talk about the entrance fees and accommodation), but until proven otherwise, walking is still ... free. With the second and above all with the third option, it kind of takes away the magic for us and the costs begin to rise. The second way to reach the Supai village is to rely on the Supai tribe which provides horses and mules that rides the 8 miles separating the Hualapai Hilltop from the village. To get to the village on horseback, you will need to be able to ride or at least have the general basics. You will not be assisted and you mustn't weigh more than 250 pounds. Baggage also mustn't weigh more than 20 pounds.

I prezzi sono in continua evoluzione, gli ultimi dati che abbiamo in possesso (2019) parlano di 187 dollari per andata e ritorno (Hualapai Hilltop - Campground) e 95 per una sola tratta. Dovrete prenotare almeno entro una settimana prima del viaggio contattando l'ufficio del turismo del villaggio. Per la tratta Supai-Hualapai Hilltop potrete prenotare anche il giorno prima presentandovi all'ufficio del turismo nel villaggio di Supai. I prezzi per la tratta Hualapai Hilltop - Supai Village sono un po' più economici: si passa dai 70 dollari per una sola tratta ai 120 dell'andata più ritorno. In alternativa potrete camminare e farvi trasportare i bagagli dai muli.
Prices keep changing, the latest we have (2019) are $ 187 per round trip (Hualapai Hilltop - Campground) and $ 95 one way. Questi lasciano il parcheggio dell'Hualapai Hilltop ogni giorno alle 10 del mattino ed arrivano al campground intorno alle 3.30. Il massimo dell'attesa è di due ore. Cosa significa? Semplice, se i vostri bagagli non saranno posizionati davanti all'ufficio del ranger entro le ore 12 avrete perso la vostra prenotazione. Al ritorno i muli lasceranno il campground alle ore 7 (aprile-ottobre) oppure alle 8 (novembre - marzo). Dal villaggio partono sempre alle ore 8. Ogni mulo può trasportare fino ad un massimo di 130 pounds. Il costo è di 400 dollari per andata e ritorno. Premesso che non sta a noi giudicare, non sono rari gli articoli presenti su internet che parlano di abusi sugli animali che trasportano bagagli e persone da e per il villaggio Supai. Non avendo mai preso in considerazione qualunque ipotesi che non fosse quella di camminare con il proprio zaino sulle spalle, in questo caso, non possiamo darvi troppe indicazioni se non che gli animali, come del resto anche noi, ci sono sembrati molto provati con il tremendo caldo di fine luglio.
Mules trains depart from the Hualapai Hilltop parking lot every day at 10 am and get to the campground around 3.30 pm. The maximum waiting time is two hours. What does it mean? COME SI RAGGIUNGONO LE HAVASU FALLS - L'ELICOTTERO
La terza opzione è quella dell'elicottero, un servizio offerto da una società esterna al villaggio. L'elicottero atterra nel cuore del villaggio Supai, quindi a 2 miglia dal campground. Il trasporto in elicottero è in funzione esclusivamente la domenica, il lunedì, il giovedì e il venerdì dal 15 marzo al 15 ottobre. Dal 16 ottobre al 14 marzo, viaggiano solo la domenica e il venerdì. Il primo volo avviene alle ore 10 e prosegue fino a quando tutti coloro che ne richiederanno l'uso saranno giunti a destinazione (solitamente intorno alle 13). I dati più recenti in nostro possesso (2019) indicano i costi in 85 dollari per una sola tratta, 170 per andata e ritorno. La durata del volo è di poco meno di 10 minuti e non occorre prenotare, qui vige, infatti la regola "first come, first served". Che tradotto sostanzialmente significa chi primo arriva, prima sale sull'elicottero.
HOW TO GET TO THE HAVASU FALLS - THE HELICOPTER
The third option is the helicopter, a service offered by a third part company. The helicopter lands in the heart of the Supai village, then 2 miles far from the campground. If you're not staying at the lodge, you will have to transport your camping gear and supplies to the campground either by backpack or by horse. The helicopter runs exclusively on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from March 15 through October 15. From October 16 through March 14, they run only on Sundays and Fridays. The helicopters start running at 10:00 AM and continue until everyone has been accommodated, normally until around 1 PM. What about the price? It costs 85 each way with one medium sized backpack (20-40 lbs.) The flight leaves from Hualapai Hilltop, and drops you off in Supai Village. The helicopter service is first come first serve, and the flight is less than 10 minute.

QUANTO COSTA VISITARE LE HAVASU FALLS?
Come abbiamo già detto, visitarle non è economico. Ad incidere sul prezzo è in primis la non possibilità di effettuare il "day hike", ovvero raggiungere le cascate e tornare indietro nello stesso giorno. E' una prima, ma fondamentale "regola" da tenere in considerazione quando si decide di visitare le Havasu Falls. Ciò significa che si è obbligati a pernottare almeno una notte al lodge oppure al campground (3 notti), due opzioni che non sono certamente economiche, considerato soprattutto il fatto che dovrete pagare anche una sorta di permesso di entrata nella riserva di 95 dollari a persona (per il 2020 il prezzo salirà a 110).
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO VISIT THE HAVASU FALLS?
As we have already said, a trip to Havasu Falls is definitely not cheap. To affect the price is primarily that the "day hike" is not allowed. You can reach the falls and go back on the same day. It is a first but fundamental "rule" you won't have to forget when deciding to visit Havasu Falls. This means that you are obliged to spend at least one night at the lodge or at the campground (3 nights), two options that are certainly not cheap, especially considering the fact that you will also have to pay a 95 dollars entrance-fee (per person) to get to reserve. In 2020 the price will rise to 110 dollars.

E' difficile fare una stima esatta dei costi anche perchè i prezzi sono in continua evoluzione, quello che possiamo dirvi è che noi nel 2019 per due notti al lodge (permesso di entrata nella riserva compresa) abbiamo speso 460 dollari, ma per il 2020 è previsto che il prezzo di una singola notte raddoppi: si passerà dai 175 dollari a notte (più la tassa per l'entrata nella riserva) ai 440 (la camera sarà per quattro persone). Se questo prezzo dovesse essere confermato diventerebbe ancora più costoso visitare le Havasu Falls. Il consiglio è quello di tenere monitorato il sito internet dedicato alle prenotazioni http://theofficialhavasupaitribe.com/Havasupai-Lodge/havasupai-lodge.html sul quale troverete anche i due numeri da chiamare per effettuare la prenotazione stessa. L'unico modo, infatti, per ottenere una camera al lodge è quella di chiamare. E insistere perchè la maggior parte delle volte non riceverete alcuna risposta. Non solo, consigliamo vivamente di chiamare almeno un anno prima della partenza perchè le camere al lodge, dotate di aria condizionata ma non di tv, vanno letteralmente a ruba.

La seconda altrettanto meravigliosa opzione è il camping presso il Supai Campground. A differenza del lodge, chi vorrà pernottare al campground potrà effettuare la prenotazione online sul sito https://www.havasupaireservations.com/, dove è inoltre possibile riservare anche il trasporto dei propri bagagli tramite muli. Le belle notizie però finiscono sostanzialmente qui. Nel 2019, infatti, era obbligatorio pernottare 3 notti per poter riservare uno spazio nel campground, ed i prezzi variavano dai 100 dollari a persona durante i giorni feriali ai 125 del weekend (venerdì, sabato e domenica). Per il 2020 l'apertura delle prenotazioni online è prevista per il 1 febbraio.

SUPAI VILLAGE - TUTTO QUELLO CHE C'E' DA SAPERE
Della storia e degli abitanti del villaggio Supai abbiamo parlato approfonditamente nel primo post, ma cosa troveranno i viaggiatori all'interno del piccolo e remoto Supai Village? Innanzitutto dovrete ricordarvi che all'interno del villaggio non è possibile scattare foto. Agli abitanti come alle abitazioni. Il villaggio è semplice ma carino, un qualcosa verrebbe da dire d'altri tempi. Eppure c'è tutto. Dalle chiese, la Supai Bible Church, che dal 1948 è un'icona del villaggio e la domenica accoglie anche i turisti durante la funzione, e The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days al Supai Medical Center, dove sono a disposizione medicine ed un dottore. Lo store, dove è possibile acquistare generi di prima necessità (acqua, frutta, sandwich, carne, bibite, bevande energetiche, snacks, etc) è aperto tutti i giorni dalle 6 del mattino alle 7 di sera. I prezzi, vista la remota location del villaggio, sono un po' più alti rispetto alla media americana.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE SUPAI VILLAGE
We've already talked about the history and the people who live in the Supai Village in the previous post, now it's time to talk about what a travelers would find in this small and remote village very far from civilization. First of all, you must remember that you can't take pictures in the village. To the inhabitants as to the houses. The village is simple but cute, one would say a place from times gone. C'è ovviamente il tourist office, con annesso Supai Museum, che offre una piccola collezione di artefatti locali, foto etc. C'è la scuola con annesso uno splendido campo da basket e non poteva mancare il Supai Cafe, l'unico ristorante del villaggio. (apertura 8-17, ma gli orari variano...). Qui troverete patatine fritte (di tre tipi: col formaggio, con il chili e a ricciolo), hamburgers ed il mitico indian taco. Per chi necessita di riempire le proprie bottigliette con acqua, sia al villaggio che al campground, troverà una fontantella. Qui il discorso acqua è preso molto seriamente ed anche la qualità della stessa è molto alta, più alta della media dello stato dell'Arizona.
You'll then notice the tourist office: it hosts also the Supai Museum, which offers a small collection of local artifacts, photos etc. There is a school with an amazing basketball court and the Supai Cafe, the only restaurant in the whole village. (opening hours: 8-17, but hours may vary ...). Here you will find 3 kind of french fries (cheese, chili cheese, curly), hamburgers and the legendary indian taco with beef. You can fill fill your water bottles at the fauces on the east side of the tourist office building. The Havasupai Tribe view water sources as sacred and they take water quality seriously. This is is one of the few tribes in the United States to develop its own water-quality standard, one more rigorous than Arizona's state standard.
