One year of preparations, dreams, fears, curiosities are now behind us. It's July 28, 2019 and we're at the Hualapai Hilltop parking lot. It's dawn. And as of this moment... nothing but us and the 8 miles that will lead to the Supai Village. The time has come for you, after so much informations (some of them very important, others marginal), to experience the real journey to Havasu Falls which, as often happens when talking about travels, is as exciting as the reward, The dream is about to come true...

Otto miglia, poco meno di tredici chilometri. Un numero, quell'8, che, sin dal momento in cui deciderete che "ok, si va alle Havasu", difficilmente dimenticherete. Il trail comincia al parcheggio dell'Hualapai Hilltop e si scende immediatamente nel canyon, un dislivello di 800 metri che all'andata non noterete, ma che al ritorno, diventeranno un ostacolo quasi insormontabile.
HUALAPAI HILLTOP TO SUPAI VILLAGE - 8 MILES / 13 KM
Eight miles, little less than thirteen kilometers. A number, eight, that, from the moment you say "ok, let's go to Havasupai", you will hardly forget. The trailhead begins at Hualapai Hilltop parking lot and immediately descends into the canyon, 800 meters of elevation gain. You won't notice that on the way down, but will become an almost insurmountable obstacle on the way back.
Eccezion fatta per questo piccolo, ma significativo, particolare, l'Havasupai è un trail bellissimo. E' semplice da seguire e, anche se situato in una zona impervia, non sarete mai soli.
Except for this small but significant detail, the Havasupai is a very beautiful trail. It is very easy to follow and, even if located in an remote area, you will never be alone along the trail.

Se l'affronterete al mattino presto (d'estate è fondamentale), troverete lungo la strada tutti coloro che staranno compiendo il percorso inverso e sarà l'occasione per scambiare qualche parola e confortarsi con un "almost there". Sei quasi arrivato.
If you face the trail very early in the morning (it's a must in summer), you will meet all those who are coming back to the Hualapai Hilltop along the way: this could be an opportunity to have words and comfort one another with an "almost there, keep going".
Il sentiero è roccioso e a tratti leggermente sabbioso, non è segnalato da cartelli o cairns, ma come abbiamo detto è semplice da seguire. Dopo circa 3 km il canyon si stringe: saranno comunque pochi i tratti in ombra, ma le mura del canyon renderanno ancora più semplice seguire il percorso.
The path is rocky and sometimes slightly sandy, it is not signposted and there aren't any cairns, but as we have said it is easy to follow. After about 3 km, the canyon gets narrow: there will still be few stretches in the shade, but the canyon walls make it even easier to follow the trail.
L'unico momento in cui dovrete stare attenti è quando troverete il primo ed unico cartello che vi segnalerà l'imminente approccio con il villaggio. Avrete già percorso circa 7 degli 8 miglia del trail e sentirete in lontananza il rumore dell'Havasu Creek.
The only time that you have to be careful is when you notice the first and only sign identifying the imminent arrival to the Supai Village. By then, you'll have already hiked 7 of the 8 miles of the Havasupai Trail: in the distance you'll hear the noise of the Havasu Creek.
Acqua significa villaggio, villaggio significa che... è quasi fatta. Svoltate a sinistra e, qualche centinaio di metri dopo, attraversate il ponticello sull'Havasu Creek. Due percorsi, uno vicino all'altro, conducono al villaggio.
Water means village, village means that... you're almost there! Turn left and cross the first bridge on the Havasu Creek just after few meters. Two paths, one next to the other, lead to the village.
Leggendo queste righe probabilmente vi preoccuperete, ma non ce n'è davvero bisogno. Perdersi è sostanzialmente impossibile. L'ultimo tratto sembrerà interminabile per via della stanchezza, ma l'Havasu Creek che scorre al vostro fianco vi garantirà le ultime energie per raggiungere il villaggio.
Reading these lines you will probably be concerned but there is really no need to be worry. Getting lost is basically impossible. The last stretch will seem endless because tou're tired, but the Havasu Creek that flows by your side will guarantee you the last energy to get to the village.
SUPAI VILLAGE TO FIFTY FOOT AND LITTLE NAVAJO FALLS - 1 MILE/1.6 KM
La storia delle falls è particolare perché, la più larga tra tutte le cascate Havasu, ha cambiato nome diverse volte. Il motivo sono sempre i flash flood, soprattutto quello del 2008. Poco prima delle Little Navajo Falls non perdetevi le Fifty Foot Falls.
SUPAI VILLAGE TO FIFTY FOOT AND LITTLE NAVAJO FALLS - 1 MILE / 1.6 KM
The history of the falls is very particular because the largest of all Havasu waterfalls, has changed its name several times. The reason is always one: the flash floods, especially that of 2008. Just before the Little Navajo Falls don't miss the Fifty Foot Falls.
E’ la più semplice, forse meno bella, ma perfetta per prendere confidenza con quello che vi attenderà proseguendo verso le prossime cascate. Qui è molto semplice fare il bagno in pozze che sembrano hot springs: essendo situate nell'area più esposta al sole dell'intero canyon, le sue acque sono un po' più calde rispetto a quelle che troverete alle Havasu ed alle Beaver Falls.
It is the simplest, probably the least nice, but it's perfect to get the feeling with what awaits you, continuing towards the next waterfalls. Here it is very easy to soak in the pools that look like hot springs: being located in the sunniest area of the entire canyon, its waters are a bit warmer than those you will find at Havasu and Beaver Falls.
Troverete pochissime persone qui, la maggior parte saranno membri della tribu Supai. Noi le abbiamo apprezzate moltissimo. La New Navajo Falls è invece alta circa 20 metri ed è caratterizzata da una grotta nascosta e formazioni rocciose molto particolari.
You will notice very few people here, most of them are members of the Supai tribe. We enjoyed this area so much! The New Navajo Falls are 20 meters high and characterized by a hidden cave and very particular rock formations.

Havasupai's most famous waterfalls, the most photographed and instagrammed. Havasu Falls are located just one mile after the Fifty Foot Falls. Just before the view point, do not miss the two stands where you can get energy drinks and the legendary frybread. Here, as you can see from the picture below, hours of operation may vary...
Cosa dire delle Havasu Falls se non che mai nella nostra vita abbiamo visto una cascata così bella. Vuoi per quell'acqua color turchese, vuoi per il bellissimo contrasto delle rocce rosse e delle piccole pools che si formano, ma è davvero difficile non rimanere a bocca aperta.
What to say about Havasu Falls except that we have never seen such a beautiful waterfall in our lives. The turquoise-colored water, the beautiful contrast of the red rocks and the small pools that... they're just amazing.
Non vorrete davvero più andarvene e la temperatura dell'acqua (circa 20 gradi) non farà altro che aumentare la voglia di fare un tuffo nelle piscine naturali più belle al mondo.
You really don't want to leave this place anymore and the water temperature (around 70 farenheit) will only increase the desire to jump into the most beautiful natural pools in the world.
Questa è forse la cascata che è cambiata di più negli anni dopo gli alluvioni. Come le altre cascate, anche le Havasu che vedrai oggi sono ben diverse da quelle del passato. Oggi è una sola cascata (prima erano due) con una singola piscina, ma dopo il flash flood del 2008 l’altezza delle cascate si è ridotta di 5 piedi, rendendo la fuoriuscita dell’acqua ancora più imponente. Accanto alla cascata, sulla destra, c’è un "grotto" con diverse formazioni di travertino.
This is perhaps the waterfall that has changed the most in the years after the floods. Like the other waterfalls, Havasu falls are very different from those of the past. Today you see a single waterfall (previously there were two falls) with a single pool, but after the 2008 flash flood the height of the falls was reduced by 5 feet, making the water spill even more impressive. Next to the waterfall, on the right, there is a grotto with several travertine formations.
Solitamente chi affronta un viaggio alle Havasu Falls, dopo averle raggiunte, si trova davanti ad un bivio. Godersi per qualche ora, se non per l'intera giornata, le cascate, nuotando, prendendo il sole, rilassandosi all'ombra delle tante piante che "proteggono" le cascate stesse, oppure proseguire la fatica. Entrambe le scelte sono comunque vincenti. Molto diverse, ma vincenti.
Usually those who face a trip to Havasu Falls have to make a difficult decision when they reach them. Enjoy the waterfalls for a few hours, if not the whole day, swimming, sunbathing, relaxing in the shade of the many plants that "protect" the falls themselves, or keep going. However, Well, in our opinion, this is a "win-win situation".
HAVASU FALLS TO MOONEY FALLS - 1 MILE/ 1.6 KM
Havasu falls significa anche campground, distante solamente 200 metri dalle più famose cascate della riserva Havasupai. Qui potrete fare refill delle vostre bottigliette d'acqua ed entrare a contatto con i campeggiatori. L'area del campground è splendida: l'Havasu Creek scorre a ridosso delle tende, uno spettacolo con pochissimi eguali.
HAVASU FALLS TO MOONEY FALLS - 1 MILE / 1.6 KM
Havasu falls also means campground, located only 200 meters away from the most famous waterfalls of the Havasupai reservation. Here you can refill your water bottles and come into contact with campers. The campground area is just amazing: the Havasu Creek flows behind the tents, a location with very few equals.
Lasciato il campground vi troverete di fronte la quarta delle cinque cascate, le temibili e terribili Mooney Falls. Da noi soprannominate "lo spauracchio".
Once you leave the campground area, you'll be facing the the fourth of the five waterfalls, the fearsome and terrible Mooney Falls. We call it "the bugbear".
Le Mooney Falls sono, dall'alto dei suoi 60 metri le più alte di Havasupai. Non tutti lo sanno ma sono più alte anche delle Cascate del Niagara. Qui il frastuono dell’acqua è assordante. Le Mooney Falls sono, infatti, racchiuse nel canyon, garantendovi una sensazione maggiore di intimità. Alla sua base c’è una piscina dalla forma ovale, la più grande tra le havasupai Falls.
Mooney Falls is the tallest waterfalls of the Havasupai Reservation. It's said to plunge some 190ft in a tall singular column amongst some ominous-looking. Not everyone knows it but they are even taller than Niagara Falls. Here the noise of the water is deafening. The Mooney Falls are, in fact, enclosed in the canyon, guaranteeing you a greater feeling of intimacy. At its base there is an oval-shaped pool, the largest among the havasupai Falls.
Il trail che conduce alla base delle cascate (e che permette di proseguire verso le Beaver Falls), è tremendo. Non a caso, in cima alle cascate troverete un cartello che vi segnala che "la discesa verso la base delle cascate è a vostro rischio e pericolo". Per arrivarvi dovrete attraversare un tunnel lungo otto metri , un altro di 5 metri e poi scendere per 36 metri aggrappati a delle catene. In cima troverete dei guanti, utili vista la scivolosità delle catene.
The trail that leads to the base of the falls (and allows you to continue towards Beaver Falls), is tremendous. Not surprisingly, at the top of the falls you will find a sign indicating that "descend at own risk". You will have to go through a a 5 and 8 meter long tunnel, and then go down 36 meters holding chains to get there. At the top you will find gloves, very useful given the slipperiness of the chains.
Le cascate si chiamano Mooney in onore del Sig. Mooney, un cercatore d’oro che morì nel 1880 dopo che si ruppe la fune con cui altri lo stavano calando. Cercare in internet i video della discesa alle Mooney Falls vi garantirà più di un brivido. La verità è che se siete spaventati dalle altezze non sarà facile scendere sino alla base delle cascate. Noi, dopo aver superato i due tunnel, abbiamo deciso di tornare sui nostri passi e goderci le Havasu Falls, ma qualche consiglio su come raggiungere le Beaver Falls ed eventualmente la confluenza con il Colorado River vogliamo comunque darvelo...
The waterfalls are called Mooney in honor of Mr. Mooney, a gold digger who died in 1880. As Mooney attempted the first descent of the cliff by means of a rope lowered from the top, the spinning rope caused him to lose his hold just a few feet from the rim and fall to the rocks below. There are many videos on the internet about the descent to the Mooney Falls: those video's will guarantee you more than a thrill. The truth is that if you are afraid of heights it will not be easy to go down to the base of the falls. After the two tunnels, we decided to retrace our steps and enjoy the Havasu Falls, but we want to give you some advice on how to reach the Beaver Falls and eventually the confluence with the Colorado.
MOONEY FALLS TO BEAVER FALLS - 3 miles/4.8 km
Le Beaver Falls, distanti 3 miglia dalle Mooney, sono sicuramente le più fotogeniche. Il trail per raggiungere le cascate non solo non è semplice, ma vi obbligherà a diversi attraversamenti dell'Havasu Creek. Impiegherete dalle 4 alle 6 ore per andare e tornare, per questo consigliamo di affrontare il trail ben prima che cali il buio.
MOONEY FALLS TO BEAVER FALLS - 3 miles / 4.8 km
The Beaver Falls, 3 miles away from Mooney, are certainly the most photogenic. The trail to the falls is not easy and forces you to many creek crossing. It will take 4 to 6 hours so we recommend to start the hike the trail well before the darkness.
Il trail è molto bello (attraverserete anche un'area ricoperta di uva selvatica), ma allo stesso tempo impegnativo. Con le mura del canyon a proteggervi sarà difficile perdersi, ma impiegherete diverso tempo per capire quale sia la strada giusta da seguire. Se durante il percorso arriverete ad incrociare il cartello che segnala l'ingresso al Grand Canyon National Park, significa che vi siete spinti troppo in là. Tornate sui vostri passi e scendete verso il torrente.
The trail is very beautiful (you will also cross an area covered with wild grapes), but at the same time pretty challenging. The canyon walls protect you, it means that you won't get lost, but it takes some time to figure out which is the right path to follow. If you see the "Welcome to Grand Canyon National Park sign" it means that you have gone too far. Retrace your steps and go down towards the stream.
LA CONFLUENZA CON IL COLORADO RIVER
Se doveste spendere più giorni nella riserva, potrete percorrere le 8 miglia che dal Campground conducono alla confluenza con il Colorado River. Passerete ancora una volta dalle Mooney Falls e dalle Beaver Falls, prima di raggiungere il maestoso Colorado, dove il marrone delle sue acque incontra l'azzurro dell'Havasu Creek. Sarete entrati nel territorio del Grand Canyon National Park e, durante le ultime miglia difficilmente incontrerete altri escursionisti. Se non alla confluenza, dove i kayakers del Colorado spesso si fermano per fare una nuotata nelle limpidissime acque del creek.
HIKE TO THE CONFLUENCE OF THE COLORADO RIVER AND HAVASU CREEK
Are you going to spend many days at the Havasupai Reservation? Well, then you'll have to to hike the 8 miles that separates the Campground and the confluence of the Colorado River and the Havasu Creek. You will pass once again by the Mooney Falls and the Beaver Falls, before reaching the majestic Colorado river, where the brown of its waters meets the blue of the Havasu Creek. You will enter the territory of the Grand Canyon National Park and, during the last few miles, you will hardly encounter other hikers. If not at the confluence, where Colorado kayakers often stop for a swim in the clear waters of the creek.
La prima e principale raccomandazione è di partire il più leggeri possibili. L'unica cosa che non deve mancare è l'acqua, tanta acqua, almeno quattro litri a testa in estate. Oltre al rifornimento di acqua consigliamo di munirsi di elettroliti da sciogliere nelle bottigliette in modo da reintegrare i sali minerali (il gatorade lo sconsigliamo) oltre a frutta secca qualche barretta energetica per sopperire agli eventuali attacchi di fame durante il tragitto.
FOOD, WATER AND CLOTHING - HOW TO FACE THE HAVASUPAI TRAIL
The first and main recommendation is to hike as light as possible. Do not forget to bring a lot of water with you, at least four liters each in the summer. In addition to the supply of water, we recommend electrolytes to be dissolved in the bottles in order to replenish the mineral salts, dry fruit and some energy bars in case of any hunger attacks during the hike.
Al villaggio poi potrete fare scorta di provviste, sia che alloggiate nella piccola Supai, sia che pernotterete nel campground. Le scarpe d'acqua sono consigliate, sia per affrontare i vari attraversamenti dell'Havasu Creek, sia se volete rilassarvi alle Havasu Falls.
You can stock up on supplies at the village, whether you are staying in the small Supai or at the campground. Water shoes are recommended for the many creek crossing and also if you wanna soak in the many pools.
QUANTI GIORNI ALLE HAVASU? LE CONCLUSIONI
In questi tre post dedicati al remoto villaggio dell'Arizona abbiamo sostanzialmente messo sul piatto tutte le informazioni in nostro possesso, ma come accade per qualunque altra parte del mondo, la domanda "quanti giorni spendere alle Havasu Falls" non ha una risposta che accontenterebbe tutti. I vincoli sono tanti ed il costo importante vi obbligheranno a fare delle scelte, a volte anche dolorose.
HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED TO EXPLORE THE HAVASUPAI RESERVATION?
In these three posts dedicated to the remote Arizona's village, we have basically put on the plate all the information in our possession, but as with any other part of the world, the question "how many days do you need to explore the Havasu Falls" has no answer that would satisfy everyone. There are many constraints and costs are high: this will force you to make some painful choices.
I vincoli sono legati al "no day hike", di cui abbiamo ampiamente parlato e dell'obbligatorietà delle tre notti se si fa camping. Diverso invece il discorso se si decide di optare per il lodge. Il nostro consiglio è di dormire almeno due notti al villaggio, garantendosi così almeno un giorno pieno per esplorare le cinque cascate (il primo e terzo giorno serviranno per arrivare e lasciare il villaggio). L'unica cosa certa è che, una volta lì non vorrete più andarvene...
The constraints are linked to the "no day hike" (we've already widely talked about it) and to the three nights minimum at the campground. The situation is different if you decide to stay at the lodge. Our advice is to stay at least two nights at the lodge, this means that you'll have at least one full day to explore the five waterfalls. The only sure thing is that once you go there you will never want to leave this magical place...
