The Grand Canyon, of course, but also the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, the Wupatki National Monument and the Petrified Forest & Painted Desert National Park. When it comes to US Route 89, the road that connects Flagstaff with Page, you will be spoiled for choice because there are so many natural beauties to visit right along the 129 miles separating the two cities or just with small small detours. Time is often short and, when it comes make a decision, people won't certainly miss all the places we mentioned above. Sometimes it takes two trips to visit all those places (Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park, Walnut Canyon National Park, Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, Wupatki National Monument). Yet there is a gem, not far from Page, which is visited by very few people. In our opinion, this place should be a "must" when you take the "89": its name is Coal Mine Canyon.
COS'E' IL COAL MINE CANYON?
Il bellissimo Coal Mine Canyon è comunemente riconosciuto come il segreto meglio conservato della "89 area", ovvero la strada che milioni di turisti ogni anno percorrono in direzione Grand Canyon o Page, dove attendervi troveranno i meravigliosi Horseshoe Bend e Antelope Canyon. Eppure, le sole 200 persone che ogni anno visitano il Coal Mine Canyon vi parleranno di un autentico gioiellino, fatto di colori e hoodos, ma anche di pace.
WHAT IS COAL MINE CANYON?
The beautiful Coal Mine Canyon is commonly recognized as the best kept secret of the "89 area", the road that millions of tourists travel each year towards the Grand Canyon, Page and the wonderful Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. And yet, the only 200 people who visit the Coal Mine Canyon every year talk about an authentic gem, made of colors and hoodos, but also of peace.
Qui, infatti, con tutta probabilità sarete da soli a godervi l'ennesimo spettacolo della natura offerto dall'Arizona, un arcobaleno di colori e balanced rocks che spiccano dalla gola. L'ingresso al Coal Mine Canyon è gratuito, ma se vorrete effettuare il trail all'interno del canyon dovrete ottenere un permesso dagli indiani Hopi (costo: 12 dollari): il Coal Mine si trova, infatti, nella riserva indiana Hopi.
Here, in fact, you will probably be alone to enjoy another Arizona's spectacle of nature, a rainbow of colors and balanced rocks that stand out from the canyon. The entrance to the Coal Mine Canyon is free, but if you want to hike the trail that runs into the canyon you will have to get a permit from the Hopi Indians (price: 12 dollars): the Coal Mine is located, in fact, in the Hopi Indian reservation.
Sono i colori a rendere magico il Coal Mine Canyon: dal grigio al nero, dall'arancione al blu. Un canyon decisamente fotogenico, fortunatamente non ancora "mainstream". Non esiste, infatti, un visitor center e gli unici "amici" che incontrerete saranno mucche e tori al pascolo.
Colors make the Coal Mine Canyon magical: from gray to black, from orange to blue. A decidedly photogenic canyon, fortunately not yet mainstream. In fact, there is no visitor center and the only "friends" you will meet are grazing cows and bulls.
COME RAGGIUNGERE IL COAL MINE CANYON
Raggiungere il Coal Mine Canyon è piuttosto semplice, anche se non troverete alcuna segnalazione ad aiutarvi. Dalla "89", deviate lungo la 160 (Navajo Trail), ovvero la strada che conduce a Tuba City, percorretela per poco più di 9 miglia, sino all'incrocio con 264. Qui svoltate a destra e proseguite per altre 17 miglia sino a raggiungere il mile marker 337. E' esattamente a metà strada tra il mile marker 337 ed il 338 che dovrete svoltare a sinistra.
HOW TO GET TO THE COAL MINE CANYON
Reaching the Coal Mine Canyon is quite simple, although there aren't any signposts to help you. From the "89", turn onto the 160 (Navajo Trail), the road that leads to Tuba City and follow it for just over 9 miles, up to the junction with 264. Here you'll have to turn right and continue for another 17 miles until you get to the mile marker 337. It is exactly halfway between the mile marker 337 and the 338 where you will have to turn left.
Dove? Sulla sinistra noterete una casa abbastanza grande in mezzo al nulla e soprattutto il mulino a vento. Non svoltate alla prima via (sterrata) a sinistra perchè quella conduce alla casa, svoltate subito dopo sull'altra sterrata che vi condurrà direttamente al mulino. Ricordatevi, quando percorrerete la sterrata, di tenere la sinistra al primo bivio.A ridosso del mulino a vento troverete anche un piccolo parcheggio con tavoli da picnic: ciò significa che siete giunti a destinazione.
Where is it? On the left you will notice a fairly large house in the middle of nowhere and above all the windmill. Do not turn left at the first street (dirt road) because that one leads to the house, just turn onto the other dirt road that leads you directly to the mill. Remember, when you drive along the dirt road, keep the left at the first crossroad. You'll see a small parking lot with picnic tables close to the windmill: this means that you have reached your destination.
HORSESHOE BEND, IL "FERRO DI CAVALLO" PIU' FAMOSO AL MONDO
Prima di giungere a Page, se provenite da sud, ad attendervi c'è l'Horseshoe Bend. Noi l'avevamo visitato nel 2015 (Horseshoe Bend), ma abbiamo comunque voluto tornare per dare uno sguardo alle grandi modifiche che da ormai un anno (2018) stanno caratterizzando il "ferro di cavallo" più famoso al mondo. Modifiche che onestamente ci piacciono meno di zero. E' svanita la magia del "cercare il mile marker 545" perchè il luogo non era segnalato, o del tornare per il tramonto dopo averlo ammirato con un'altra luce al mattino.
HORSESHOE BEND, THE MOST FAMOUS "HORSESHOE" IN THE WORLD
Before getting to Page, if you are coming from the south, do not miss the world famous Horseshoe Bend. We had visited it in 2015 (Horseshoe Bend), but we still wanted to come back to take a look at the big changes that have been characterizing the most famous "horseshoe" in the world since 2018. Changes that we honestly don't like at all. The magic of "looking for the mile marker 545" because tis place was not signposted has vanished, or coming back for sunset after admiring it with another light in the morning.
Anche qui ha vinto il "Dio denaro": nel 2019, a lavori non ancora ultimati, si paga per entrare (10 dollari a vettura), non è possibile uscire e rientrare con lo stesso biglietto... insomma, sta diventando tutto troppo commerciale. Arriverà a breve anche un visitor center, che con tutta probabilità sarà accompagnato da un cafè. Per quel che conta la nostra opinione, la versione 2015 dell'Horseshoe Bend era tutta un'altra cosa...

LOWER ANTELOPE CANYON, VIAGGIO NELLO SPETTACOLARE SLOT CANYON
Dopo aver visitato nel 2015 l'Upper Antelope Canyon, non potevamo mancare l'appuntamento con l'altro splendido slot canyon dell'area di Page, il Lower Antelope Canyon. Meno famoso e visitato rispetto all'Upper, il Lower ci ha sorpreso per bellezza e possibilità di godersi nell'arco dell'escursione ogni singolo dettaglio senza la fretta che è invece regina nel più grande ma decisamente più affollato Upper.
LOWER ANTELOPE CANYON, JOURNEY IN THE MAGIC SLOT CANYON
After visiting the Upper Antelope Canyon in 2015, we couldn't miss the appointment with the other wonderful slot canyon in the Page area, il Lower Antelope Canyon. Less famous and visited than the Upper, the Lower surprised us with its beauty and the possibility of enjoying every single detail during the visit: Lower Antelope Canyon is definitely less crowded than the Upper Antelope Canyon.

Sono due le compagnie che effettuano tour all'interno del canyon, la Dixie Ellis' Lower Antelope Canyon Tours e la Ken's Tours Lower Antelope Canyon Tours, situate una di fianco all'altro. Entrambe le agenzie sono affidabili, l'unica differenza che abbiamo notato è legata all'intrattenimento pre tour.
There are two companies that run the canyon, Dixie Ellis' Lower Antelope Canyon Tours and Ken's Tours Lower Antelope Canyon Tours, located side by side. Both agencies are reliable, the only difference we noticed is related to pre-tour entertainment.

Ken's Tour ci è sembrato, infatti, molto più organizzato, tra negozi di souvenir, cafe, etc. Il consiglio, quando si tratta di Antelope Canyon, è sempre quello di prenotare online nei rispettivi siti internet delle compagnie con largo anticipo.
Ken's Tour seemed to us, in fact, much more organized, among souvenir shops, cafes, etc. The advice, when it comes to Antelope Canyon, is always to book the visit online well in advance.

Nel lower, a differenza dell'Upper, non ci si arriva in Jeep. Una breve passeggiata di cinque minuti conduce direttamente all'entrata nel canyon. Il percorso è semplice, anche se dovrete affrontare alcune scalinate: la visita, che dura circa un'oretta, è possibile solamente con una guida dopo i tragici eventi del 1997 quando, un improvviso flash flood uccise 11 turisti.

Unlike the Upper Antelope Canyon, you won't get to the Lower by jeep. A short five-minute walk leads directly to the canyon entrance. The trail is simple, although you will have to face some steps: the visit, which lasts about an hour, is only possible with a native-guide after the tragic 1997 events 1997, when a sudden flash flood killed 11 tourists.

MEGLIO L'UPPER O IL LOWER ANTELOPE CANYON?
E' una domanda che ci siamo posti tutti, "quale scegliere tra l'Upper e l'Antelope Canyon?". "E' meglio l'Upper o il lower? E se vi dicessimo che ce n'è un terzo. Già, ma andiamo con ordine. Dopo averli visitati entrambi possiamo confermare che qualunque canyon deciderete di visitare avrete fatto la scelta giusta.
IS LOWER OR UPPER ANTELOPE CANYON BETTER?
It's a question we all asked ourselves, "which one is better? The Upper or the Lower Antelope Canyon?". "Which is the main different between Upper and Lower? And if we told you that there is a third one. All right, first things first. After having visited both of them we can confirm that whatever canyon you decide to visit you will have made the right choice.
Entrambi sono onestamente splendidi. La differenza principale è legata alla quantità di persone presenti nel canyon. Se la vostra intenzione è quella di scattare foto con calma, non avere nel ricordo di una vita altre persone che compaiono alle vostre spalle, allora non vi è alcun dubbio che il Lower Antelope Canyon faccia al caso vostro.
Both are honestly gorgeous. The main difference is related to the amount of people in the canyon at the same time. If your intention is to take things slowly, take pictures calmly without other people that ruin your life's memories appearing behind your back, then there is no doubt that the Lower Antelope Canyon is the canyon for you.

Non dimenticatevi, infatti, che sono ben cinque le compagnie che operano nell'Upper Antelope Canyon (contro le 2 del Lower) e di conseguenza anche il numero dei visitatori presenti nello stesso momento all'interno del canyon è ben diverso.
Do not forget, in fact, that there are five companies operating in the Upper Antelope Canyon (2 in the Lower) and consequently alsotthere will be a larger number of visitors inside the canyon at the same time.

Però i colori dell'Upper dalle 11 del mattino alle 13, quando i raggi del sole entrano perpendicolari nel canyon, sono ovviamente un qualcosa di speciale. Noi, onestamente, abbiamo preferito il Lower.
But Ypper Antelope Canyon's colors from 11 am to 1 pm are obviously something special: you'll get the best photographs and see the beams of light throughout the canyon. Anyway we still prefer the Lower Antelope Canyon.

IL CANYON X, IL TERZO GIOIELLINO... SPESSO DIMENTICATO
Ah, il terzo canyon. Esatto, perchè oltre al lower ed all'upper, c'è anche il Canyon X, che prende il nome dalla forma a X. Non lo conosce sostanzialmente nessuno, eppure è altrettanto affascinante. I tour che conducono al Canyon X sono effettuati da una sola compagnia, gli orari migliori per la visita sono dal mattino alle 2 del pomeriggio.
THE CANYON X, THE THIRD JEWELL... OFTEN FORGOTTEN
As we told before, there's a third canyon. Exactly, even if everybody knows only the lower and the upper, you shouldn't miss also the Canyon X, which takes its name from the X-shape of the canyon. No one knows it, yet it is equally fascinating. The tours that lead to the Canyon X are offered by a single company, the best times for the visit is from morning to 2 pm.
