We're about to enter the northern part of Arizona, outlined by the Route 66 that "cuts" from east to west the entire state. We are even about to have the first american breakfast of the entire trip (we are finally testing Ihop!) in the "historic" city of Flagstaff, famous for the mother road ...
...ma è anche la giornata del volo sul Grand Canyon, uno sfizio che ci siamo voluti togliere nonostante il costo elevato dell'escursione, vicino ai 200 dollari a persona. "Quello che abbiam risparmiato sui voli e sugli hotel lo investiamo qui... e poi dai, una volta nella vita" ci siam detti e tutto sommato... abbiamo fatto bene!
It's not over. This is even the day of the flight over the Grand Canyon, a special thing we wanted to do despite the high cost of the excursion, close to 200 dollars per person. "We could invest here what we saved with flights and hotels... and then, at least once in a lifetime...", that's what we tought while we were booking! Well, we were right...
Eppure abbiamo anche rischiato di non effettuarlo il giro in elicottero (che avevamo prenotato dall'Italia per le ore 13), ma se andasse tutto liscio non saremmo di certo noi. Volete sapere cosa sarà mai successo? Sicuramente sì, altrimenti non sareste qui. Con la solita frase che poi puntualmente finiamo per rimpiangere ("ma, visto che è presto perchè non proviamo a visitare anche il Sunset Crater Volcano oppure il Wupatki National Monument"), rischiamo di rovinarci la giornata.
We have been so close to miss the appointment with the helicopter ride (which we booked in advance), but this is us and those kind of things always happen to us! Do you want to know what happened? Definitely yes, otherwise you would not be here. With the usual sentence that then we end up regretting ("We are not late, why don't we try to visit the Sunset Crater Volcano or the Wupatki National Monument before going to the Grand Canyon?"), we tried to ruin our day!
Siamo convinti, infatti, che tutto sommato la strada non cambi poi di molto se seguiamo la "'89" invece che dirigerci direttamente verso Tusayan lungo la 180. Erroraccio. In primis perchè non avremmo comunque il tempo di visitare i due luoghi sopra citati e poi perchè ci troveremo a "tagliare" il Grand Canyon National Park dove i limiti di velocità sono logicamente molto bassi.
We believe, in fact, that after all that nothing will change if we follow the "'89" instead of heading directly toward Tusayan along the 180. A mistake, a huge mistake. Firstly because we still don't have time enough to visit the two places mentioned above and then because we'll actually have to "cut" the Grand Canyon National Park where speed limits are logically very low.
Arriviamo all'entrata del parco (ore 12.15) e intuiamo subito che la situazione sta volgendo al peggio. "Avremmo appuntamento alle 13 per l'elicottero, secondo lei facciamo in tempo" diciamo alla ranger mostrando il pass dei parchi. La signorina scuote il capo e si lascia andare ad un laconico "non ce la farete mai, auguri!". No, lo aspettiamo da un anno, non può finire così! In mezz'ora percorriamo l'intera strada, stabilendo probabilmente il record "all time" di percorrenza ed ebbene sì, riusciremo ad arrivare in tempo. Abbiamo perso qualche anno di vita, rischiato migliaia di dollari di multa e qualche incidente...ma ce l'abbiamo fatta.
We arrive at the park entrance at a quarter past midday (take off will be al 1.10 pm!) and immediately realize that the situation is turning bad. "We have to be there at 1 pm, do you think we'll be on time?" we ask the ranger showing the annual park pass. The lady shakes his head and says "no, you will be very late!". Oh, no, we have been waiting for this moment for an entire year, it can not end in this way! We drive the whole way in less then half an hour, establishing probably the record "all time", We lost a few years of life, risking thousands of dollars in fines and some crashes ... but we did it!!!
Siamo ovviamente nel South Rim del Grand Canyon (da non confondere con il North Rim, altrettanto bello ma che non abbiamo ancora visitato) a ridosso del National Park, entrata sud.
We are obviously in the South Rim of the Grand Canyon (don't confuse it with the North Rim, just as beautiful as the north but unfortunately we haven't visited it yet) close to the National Park south entrance.
Papillon is the company. After being weighed and a short movie about all the necessary explanations about the Grand Canyon and the flight safety, we are finally ready to get on a helicopter, where we can even listen to a story about the Grand Canyon in italian language!

L'avevamo già visitato durante il primo viaggio negli Stati Uniti, ma dall'elicottero è chiaramente un'altra cosa.
We've already visited it during our first trip in the United States, but the view from the helicopter is definitely much better
Ovviamente per questione di budget abbiamo scelto l'opzione più semplice e meno costosa: l'elicottero è "old version", no aria condizionata (e credeteci fa caldissimo al suo interno) e durata di soli 30 minuti.
Obviously, because of a low budget, we've chosen the easiest option and less expensive: the helicopter is a kind of "old version", no air conditioning (and believe us, it is very hot inside it) and the toour lasts just 30 minutes.
Ma poco importa, l'esperienza è davvero incredibile.
Well, it doesn't matter. That's an amazing experience.
Come è incredibile pensare al lavoro che nel corso di migliaia di anni il fiume Colorado ha svolto in quello che a conti fatti resta una delle più grandi meraviglie naturali nel mondo.
We think about the work that the Colorado river has done over the years. Well, that's incredible, this is certainly one of the greatest wonders in the world.
We leave it with the belief that this is an experience that should be lived at least once in a lifetime.
It's 2 pm and we have really plenty of time (not as in the morning!) and we stop many times along the road that will take us to Page.

... and above all admiring the famous "desert view watchtower", really close to the east entrance gate from which we arrived in the morning.
La torre regala probabilmente la miglior visuale tra tutti i view-point del parco. Non è un caso che sia sempre affollata da centinaia e centinaia di turisti.
The tower gives probably the best view of all the view-point of the entire park. It is always crowded with hundreds of tourists.
Risalente al 1932 (per ulteriori cenni storici rimandiamo a wikipedia: watchtower) la torre è sicuramente il miglior punto panoramico dal quale ammirare sia il fiume Colorado che l'enorme Canyon.
Dating back to 1932 (for more historical references refer to wikipedia: watchtower), the tower is certainly the best place to admire both the Colorado River that the huge canyon.
Lasciato il Grand Canyon National Park riprendiamo l'Interstate 89 direzione Page. Entriamo nella "navajo nation", la riserva indiana navajo, e la solita strada con il nulla intorno è condita da qualche bancarella indiana in cui poter comprare turchesi ed altri oggetti.
Leaving the Grand Canyon National Park we take the Interstate 89 toward Page. We are entering the "Navajo Nation", the Navajo Indian Reservation: there are a lot of indian stalls where you can buy turquoise and other objects.
Prima di arrivare a Page però deviamo verso la "89a", lungo il Marble Canyon.
Before reaching Page there is something that has still to be done. We take the "89a", along the Marble Canyon...
Per intenderci la strada che, se seguita per intero, porterebbe al North Rim del Grand Canyon. Noi però ci fermiamo prima, all'Historic Navajo Bridge.
This road would lead to the Grand Canyon North Rim, but we stop at the Historic Navajo Bridge.
Non lontano da qui ci sarebbe anche la possibilità di scendere lungo il fiume Colorado, ma il tempo stringe e ci accontentiamo della visita del ponte (anzi sarebbe meglio dire i ponti perchè sono due) che collega le due sponde del canyon: sotto di esso scorre uno dei più affascinanti fiumi al mondo.
Not far from here there would also be the possibility to walk down the Colorado River, but we are here for the bridge (or rather I should say the bridges because they are two) that connects the two sides of the canyon. Below it flows one of the most beautiful rivers in the world, the Colorado river.
Ci sono, almeno qui, pochi turisti e riusciamo a percorrere il ponte pedonale fino ad arrivare al view point al visitor center.
There are, at least here, very few tourists and we can walk the pedestrian bridge till the view point at the visitor center.
Arrivati a Page lasciamo i bagagli nel nostro motel (motel 6, abbastanza disastroso ma con i prezzi che circolano qui non ci si può lamentare troppo.) e prima di cena c'è ancora un altro appuntamento con la nostra personale storia americana. Da tempo, infatti, aspettiamo di visitare (ingresso gratuito) l'Horseshoe bend, un'altra meraviglia creata dal fiume Colorado. Se state arrivando da sud, l'uscita è una manciata di miglia prima dell'ingresso in Page lungo il mile marker 545. Non faticherete comunque a trovarlo nonostante non sia ben segnalato.
Once in Page we leave the bags in our motel (an anonymus and expensive motel 6) and, before dinner, there will still be another appointment with our own American history. For some time, in fact, we have been expecting to visit the Horseshoe bend (admission is free), another wonder created by the Colorado River. If you are arriving from the south, exit is a few miles before entering the Page along the mile marker 545. It won't be difficult to find it anyway although it is not well marked.
La fila di auto parcheggiate anche lungo la strada vi suggerirà che "this is the place" e dopo aver percorso poco meno di un chilometro nel deserto tra saliscendi eccolo comparire davanti a voi.
The cars parked along the road will suggest suggest you that "this is the place" and after a 0.7 miles walk t in the desert you'll reach it.
E' il tramonto e ci sono centinaia di persone in attesa di questo splendido spettacolo, quasi come se fosse un pellegrinaggio.
It's sunset time and there are more than hundred people waiting for this wonderful show.
Il tramonto dura pochissimo...
The sun goes down very quickly...
...il sole, infatti, scomparirà in poco meno di cinque minuti...
... it lasts just five minutes...
...and then the darkness. Obviously all the pictures can't describe what the horseshoe bend is at sunset, but this experience has a special place in our heart.
