Il nostro amore, folle, per Shake Shack è cominciato in una sera d'estate proprio qui, nel bel parco di fronte al Flat Iron, nel cuore della "Grande Mela". Shake Shack è il re dei fast food per quanto riguarda i panini, anche se la sua qualità (ma anche i prezzi) ricordano più una paninoteca che una catena di fast food. Il Shack Burger, ma anche le buonissime patatine fritte ed il milk shake sono il fiore all'occhiello di un'azienda che ha aperto i battenti nel 2004 ed in 15 anni è sbarcata anche in Europa. Shake Shack afferma di usare solamente carne di angus tutta al naturale e che la sua carne è completamente libera da ormoni e antibiotici. A few years ago, exactly five, we wrote a post about our favourite 10 American restaurants. However, those were the first experiences in the USA: at that time we had been to only few places and consequently experienced few restaurants. In 2020, after 17 stars stripes road trips and twenty-eight states visited, we are ready for a slightly truer ranking, which obviously reflects our way of traveling and our tastes on food. This time we want to do things right and we will first propose the top 10 of the best American restaurant chains (with an intrusion) and then, the ranking of the best 30 restaurants that Americans call "family-owned". In short, not those of the big brands, but those perhaps discovered after a careful research on tripadvisor or yelp or thanks to the advice of the locals. The opening, however, is dedicated to the "restaurant chains", those that often save us when "it is 9.30 in the evening, we've just arrived at the motel after a long day and ... all the restaurants are going to close". Yet they always save us ...
1) SHAKE SHACK
Madison Square Park, New York City, New York. Our love for Shake Shack began on a summer evening right here, in the beautiful park in front of the Flat Iron building, in the heart of the "Big Apple". Shake Shack is the king of fast food when it comes to american burgers, although its quality (but also prices) reminds us more a restaurant than a fast food chain. The Shack Burger, but also the delicious French fries and milk shake are the flagship of a company that opened its doors in 2004 and ince its founding, it has been one of the fastest-growing food chains, eventually becoming a public company filing for an initial public offering of stock in late 2014. You can find shack shack all over the world nowadays. Shake Shack claims to only use all-natural angus meat which is completely free of hormones and antibiotics. Well. Shack shack isn't just New York City anymore: you can find it also in in other major American cities including Las Vegas, Seattle, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Salt Lake City, Miami, New Orleans , Phoenix ... Wikipedia also says that as of January 1, 2019, there were 208 Shake Shacks throughout the world (36 were in the United States) but the company expects to have over 320 locations by 2020

2) TEXAS ROADHOUSE
Lo abbiamo scoperto per caso, a Chattanooga, Tennessee, nel 2018 e da quel momento non è più esistita nessun'altra steakhouse se in città c'è... Texas Roadhouse. Non dimenticheremo mai la gentilissima cameriera che, essendo per noi la prima volta da Texas Roadhouse, ci fece assaggiare le loro meravigliose ribs. Però Texas Roadhouse per noi significa soprattutto filetto o comunque una bistecca rib-eye con un paio di enormi contorni sempre presenti (ottimo il chili, se siete disposti a provare un contorno particolare). Ciò che ci ha particolarmente colpito sono i prezzi molto bassi rispetto alla qualità offerta. Non a caso, in tutte le locations in cui siamo stati (l'ultima a Grand Junction, Colorado), abbiamo sempre dovuto aspettare almeno mezz'ora per ottenere un tavolo. Texas Roadhouse è sempre pieno, un vanto per l'azienda del Kentucky che ormai gestisce quasi 600 sedi e, non dimenticatelo, offre noccioline gratis!LA SCHEDA

2) TEXAS ROADHOUSE
We discovered it by chance, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 2018 and from that moment it no longer existed any othere steakhouses if ... Texas Roadhouse was in town. We will never forget the very kind waitress who, being for us the first time there, had us taste their wonderful ribs. But Texas Roadhouse for us means above all fillet or at least a rib-eye steak with a couple of huge side dishes always (if you are willing to try a particular side dish, don't miss the chili). The thing that really got to us was the very low prices compared to the quality offered. Not surprisingly, in all the locations we have been to (the last one in Grand Junction, Colorado), we always had to wait at least half an hour to get a table. Texas Roadhouse is always full, a source of pride for the Kentucky company that now manages almost 600 locations. Don't forget that there're free peanuts!PROFILE

Troverete più d'uno che, parlando di panini e di Stati Uniti vi dirà che "ok, Shake Shack è buono, ma io preferisco Five Guys". Qui la scelta è ardua. Parliamo, infatti, di un livello molto alto per entrambi e, anche se noi riteniamo Shake Shack un piccolo gradino sopra, Five Guys è un must durante ogni nostro on the road. Five Guys o Five Guys Burgers and Fries, dal 2001 domina la scena dei panini da fast food, tanto da arrivare in un mercato non così semplice come quello italiano. A Milano ha da poco aperto il primo punto vendita e nel 2020 Roma la seguirà a ruota. Noi, per scelta, non abbiamo mai provato il Five Guys di Milano nonostante la vicinanza, perchè vogliamo che resti una chicca dei nostri viaggi americani. Perchè 5 guys è così buono? Per la carne, per la possibilità che il cliente ha di scegliere gli ingredienti e per le... noccioline gratuite. Quando ci sono quelle, siamo già a metà dell'opera. Wikipedia intanto ci racconta che a partire dal 2016, Five Guys aveva oltre 1.500 sedi aperte in tutto il mondo, con 1.500 ulteriori sedi in fase di sviluppo. E che la società è stata la catena di fast food in più rapida crescita negli Stati Uniti. There's more than one persone who, speaking of american burgers, will tell you that "ok, Shake Shack is good, but I prefer Five Guys". Here the choice is not easy. We are talking, in fact, of a very high level for both of them and, even if we consider Shake Shack a small step above, Five Guys is always a must during our road trips. Five Guys or Five Guys Burgers and Fries has been dominating the scene of fast food sandwiches since 2001, enough to rech a market so complicated as the Italian one. The first 5 guys restaurant has recently opened and a new one will open in 2020 in Rome. We have never tried the Five Guys in Milan, by choice, despite the proximity, because we want that those amazing burgers will remain a gem of our American travels. Why is 5 guys so good? For the meat, oc course, but also because customers can choose every ingrdient and for the ... free peanuts. When it comes to peanuts, we can't get enough. Meanwhile, Wikipedia tells us that as of 2016, Five Guys had over 1,500 locations open worldwide, with 1,500 locations under development. And that the company was the fastest-growing fast food chain in the United States, with a 32.8% sales increase from 2010 to 2011. Five Guys has also received numerous awards in D.C. area publications, including "Number 1 Burger" by Washingtonian Magazine for seven years. 4) WHOLE FOODS
All'inizio del post vi avevamo accennato di un'intrusione all'interno delle catene di ristoranti. Già, perchè Whole Foods non è una catena di ristoranti, bensì di supermercati che è talmente cresciuta negli ultimi 10 anni da essere acquistata da Amazon per ben 14 miliardi di dollari. Perchè Whole Foods all'interno di una classifica di ristoranti? Andiamo con ordine. L'azienda con sede ad Austin e che vanta 500 supermercati circa sparsi nel paese, in Canada e nel Regno Unito, offre prodotti di origine controllata ed naturale (organic), alimenti naturali e prodotti biologici e, soprattutto, un favoloso servizio take away. Da Whole Foods trovate sostanzialmente di tutto, dalla carne alla pizza, dalla pasta alle verdure. Ce n'è davvero per tutti i gusti. Dopo aver preparato la vostra "box" con il cibo scelto, potrete gustarlo anche sul posto grazie anche al supporto del supermercato che fornisce acqua gratis, forno microoonde, posate etc. Il costo dei prodotti del supermercato è superiore a quello delle altre catene di supermercati, con in testa Safeway che rimane il nostro preferito quando dobbiamo fare la spesa. Una piccola nota a margine. Sarà stato un caso, ma le trentina di locations di Whole Foods dove siamo stati erano sempre situate in zone decisamente belle, pulite, ordinate (e ci verrebbe da dire anche ricche...) della città.LA SCHEDA

4) WHOLE FOODS
At the beginning of the post we mentioned an intrusion into the restaurant chains. Yes, because Whole Foods is not a restaurant, it's just supermarkets that has grown so much in the last 10 years that it was purchased by Amazon for 14 billion dollars. Why Whole Foods in a restaurant ranking? All right, first things first. The Austin-based company, which boasts approximately 500 supermarkets scattered throughout the country, Canada and the United Kingdom, exclusively sells products free from hydrogenated fats and artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives, which means "very, very natural", organic products and, above all, a fabulous take away service. At Whole Foods you can find basically everything from meat to pizza, from pasta to vegetables. There is really something for everyone. You can put the chosen food in the box and enjoy it on the spot thanks to the support of the supermarket which provides free water, microwave oven, cutlery etc. The cost of supermarket products is higher than that of other supermarket chains. A small side note. It may have been a coincidence, but the thirty locations of Whole Foods where we have been to were always located in decidedly beautiful, clean, tidy and apparently very safe areas of the city.PROFILE

5) SUBWAY
Subway, eat fresh. Sicuramente vi sarete imbattuti in questo slogan che dal 1965 accompagna la catena Subway, numero uno quando si tratta di sandwich e insalate. Nel 2018 era considerata la prima catena di fast food al mondo, forte dei suoi quasi 45 mila ristoranti sparsi ben 144 paesi nel mondo (sostanzialmente manchiamo solo noi italiani ed i francesi). La principale caratteristica di Subway è che il cliente può creare sul momento il proprio panino scegliendo fra tutti gli ingredienti disponibili, partendo da un sandwich base tra quelli proposti. Quindi si partirà dalla scelta del pane (italiano, integrale etc) che può essere acquistare "foot long" (intero) o 6 inch (metà) e poi si proseguirà sino ai condimenti ed alle salse, tutti rigorosamente scelti dal cliente. Subway, eat fresh. You surely know this slogan that has accompanied the Subway chain since 1965. It's definitely the number one when it comes to sandwiches and salads. It is one of the fastest-growing franchises in the world[3] and, as of October 2019, had 41,512 locations in more than 100 countries. More than half its locations (23,928 or 57.6%) are in the United States. It also is the largest single-brand restaurant chain, and the largest restaurant operator, in the world. The main feature of Subway is that the customer can create his own sandwich on the spot by choosing from all the available ingredients, starting from a basic sandwich among those offered. Then customer will have to choose its favourire bread among italian, wholemeal and many others which can be purchased "foot long" (whole) or 6 inch (half) and then continue up to the seasonings and sauces. if you get the menu, you can also pick chips (the "Lays oven baked" are just amazing) or a cookie.PROFILE

6) PAPA JOHN'S AND DOMINO'S
I prezzi delle pizze negli Stati Uniti non sono proprio economicissimi. Diciamo pure che costano il doppio delle nostre (italiane) e non sono minimamente paragonabili per qualità. Eppure, durante un on the road, ci sarà sempre quella serata in cui, almeno noi italiani, diremo... "oggi ho voglia di pizza". E qui, il nostro consiglio, è sempre quello di fare affidamento a due delle quattro principali catene di pizzeria statunitensi (Pizza Hut e Little Ceasars le consideriamo un gradino sotto), Papa John's e Domino's, soprattutto se avete la possibilità di cenare nel vostro hotel (raramente, infatti, si può cenare in loco). Entrambe le catene sono affidabili, ma è molto più semplice, almeno in base alla nostra esperienza, trovare Domino's rispetto a Papa Johns, decisamente più popolare nel mondo e presente anche in Italia. Non dimenticate però che, prima di recarvi in pizzeria, occorrerebbe effettuare qualche piccolo accorgimento per non rimanere delusi. Il primo è di controllare su Yelp o tripadvisor i commenti sulla locations a cui siete interessanti, perchè non tutte sono uguali e non tutte le pizze di Domino's e Papa John's, sono uguali. La seconda è di scegliere bene i gusti, non dimenticando che, un po' come accade per il gelato (dove si paga in base a quante palline "scoop" scegliete e non come da noi in base alla grandezza del cono), più ingredienti inserite, più pagate a meno che si qualche promozione speciale. Pizzas' prices in the United States are not really cheap. Let's also say that they cost twice as much as ours (Italian) and are not comparable in quality. Yet, during a road trip, there will always be that evening when you say ... "Ok, after this... pizza". People can fully count on two of the four main US pizza chains (in our opinion, Pizza Hut and Little Ceasars are one step below), Papa John's and Domino's, especially if you have the opportunity to dine in your hotel (in fact, you can rarely dine on site). Both chains are reliable, but it is much simpler, at least in our experience, to find Domino's compared to Papa Johns: the first one is definitely more popular in the world. Do not forget, however, that, before going to the Domino's or Papa John's, to take small precautions so that you never get disappointed. The first one is to check on Yelp or tripadvisor for comments on the locations you are interested in, because not all of them work well and not all Domino's and Papa John's pizzas are the same. A 12 or 14 inch pizza usually is enough for two people.PROFILE

7) DAIRY QUEEN
Se viaggiate negli Usa, in estate, può far davvero caldo. Ed allora quale occasione migliore per fermarsi a pranzo per un delizioso gelato da Dairy Queen? D'accordo, per gli americani Dairy Queen non è soltanto gelato (troverete anche burgers e molto altro), ma noi europei non riusciamo a non esser attratti da quegli enormi "blizzard", enormi gelati soft al gusto di caramello, fudge, cookie, noci pecan, chocolate chip, oreo etc. Onestamente sono uno più buono dell'altro. Troverete anche i meno calorici frozen yogurt. Il primo ristorante DQ fu aperto a Joliet, Illinois, la stessa città della prigione dei Blues Brothers e della serie tv Prison Break, un must quando si percorre la Route 66. Okay, for Americans Dairy Queen is not just ice cream (you will also find burgers and much more), but Europeans just cant' stop thinking about those huge "blizzards", soft ice creams caramel, fudge, cookies, pecans, chocolate chips, oreo flavored etc. Honestly, they're all delicious. You will also find the less caloric frozen yogurt. The first DQ restaurant was opened in Joliet, Illinois, a city which is famous for the Blues Brothers and the TV series Prison Break' prison, a must when traveling on Route 66. PROFILE

Quando si viaggia negli Usa, solitamente il primo piatto tipico che si vuol provare è il barbeque. In 33 dei 50 stati americani potrà soddisfare questa vostra richiesta Famous Dave's, che noi scoprimmo durante il viaggio lungo la route 66. Eravamo in Missouri, a Springfield, dove fummo trattati divinamente. Era la nostra prima volta in un Famous Dave's ed il manager ci regalò ben due salse griffate Famous Dave's. Ovviamente questo è il regno del barbeque e, anche se ancora poco conosciuto (Famous Dave's aprì il primo ristorante in Wisconsin nel 2014), è già diventato un punto di riferimento per gli americani. Non è un caso se vi imbatterete per la prima volta in Famous Dave's in un viaggio lontano dai soliti schemi: la catena è, infatti, presente soprattutto nel midwest americano anche se ormai ha raggiunto ben 33 stati ed altri tre paesi nel mondo: il Canada, Puertorico e gli Emirati Arabi.LA SCHEDA

When traveling in the USA, the first typical dish people usually want to try is barbeque. In 33 of the 50 American states, Famous Dave's will satisfy your request. We discovered it on the journey along the Historical Route 66. We were in Springfield, Missouri, where we were treated very well. It was our first time at a Famous Dave's location and the manager gave us two famous Dave's sauces for free. Obviously this is the realm of the barbeque and, although still little known (Famous Dave's opened the first restaurant in Wisconsin in 2014), it has already become a reference point for Americans. It is no coincidence if you come across Famous Dave's for the first time during a trip away from the usual beaten paths: the chain is, in fact, present mainly in the American midwest even though it covers 33 states and three other countries in the world: Canada, Puertorico and the United Arab Emirates.PROFILE

Se questa classifica l'avessimo fatta anche solo cinque anni fa, da amanti delle mitiche alette di pollo, Buffalo Wild Wings l'avremmo anche inserito più in alto in classifica. Tuttavia le ultime locations nelle quali siamo stati (l'ultima a Lafayette, in Lousiana) ci hanno deluso ed anche su internet si trovano ora pareri discordanti su quella che fino a qualche tempo fa era un'icona della ristorazione americana. Già, perchè se si è alla ricerca di un tipico sports bar con decine di televisori che trasmettono ogni genere di sport, cucina americana ma soprattutto alette di pollo di ogni tipo, in pochi battono Buffalo Wild Wings. Attenzione tuttavia al menù, perchè quelle piccanti sono davvero... piccanti! Buffalo Wild Wings offre quasi 1300 locations in giro per il mondo e, come abbiamo avuto già modo di consigliare, non tutte operano allo stesso modo. 9) BUFFALO WILD WINGS
If I'd only made ranking just five years ago, as lovers of the legendary chicken wings, Buffalo Wild Wings would would have been included in the top three of the ranking. However, the last locations we have been to (the last one was in Lafayette, in Lousiana) have disappointed us and even on the internet there are now conflicting opinions on what was an icon of American catering until just recently. Anyway, if you are looking for a typical sports bar with dozens of televisions that broadcast all kinds of sports, American cuisine but above all chicken wings of all kinds, Buffalo Wild Wings is the place for you. However, don't forget to read the chicken wings menu, because the spicy ones are really ... spicy!
