Two days in Frankfurt, the European "Mainhattan" (Day 1)

Berlin and Munich. When you think of Germany, the first cities that come to mind are those two true giants, and, secondarily, possibly also two northern cities such as the maritime Hamburg and Cologne. However, people rarely think of Frankfurt am Main as a tourist destination where they can spend an interesting weekend; usually the capital of the Hessian region is connected to the financial activities of Germany and Europe and, for travelers, to the busy international airport (the fourth largest on the continent), often the scene of stopovers between long-haul flights to distant destinations. Yet Frankfurt is an amazing city, atypical in the European scene because it is the only one that offer something that is hard to find here in Europe: history, nature and modernity all at once. Yes, because in addition to the historical soul that you can breathe in the city center, Frankfurt is rich in parks and, above all, has a financial area with huge skyscrapers typical of American cities or some areas of Asia. It is no coincidence that its nickname is “Mainhattan,” a play on words between Main (the Main River, which runs through the city) and Manhattan because of its beautiful skyline composed of more than 100 skyscrapers.

(Frankfurt Skyline)

Frankfurt is, in fact, the beating heart of Germany's financial activities, in addition to being the headquarters of the European Central Bank and the continent's most important stock exchange, and its famous skyline, with more than a hundred skyscrapers, is home to numerous banks and major companies worldwide. And then there are the museums, so many (more than 30...) that there's an entirely street dedicated to all of them. And it is from here, from the “Museums' Bank” that we start discovering Frankfurt, in an intense (as always) two-day tour of the Hessian capital's main sights.

(Frankfurt)

A journey that begins at the Campanile Frankfurt Offenbach, the hotel we chose as our base for this German weekend. It is inexpensive (41 euros per night, a price that is now very rare!) and with the metro stop very close by (the city center is 3 stops away) and well connected to the airport. We are on the outskirts of Offenbach, in an area full of businesses and car dealerships. There are no restaurants nearby (except for an Asian one), but the nearby McDonald's is perfect for breakfast if you do not want to take advantage of the one offered for a fee by the hotel. For those who do not wish to use transportation, a walk of about 3 km along the Main River makes it possible to reach the historic center in about 45 minutes.

THE “MUSEUM BANK” WITH THE STADEL MUSEUM

We walked these 3 km along the Main River on the first morning to reach the first stop, the legendary “Museum Bank,” so called both because of its geographical location (on the river), but also because it features, one in a row, several museums. The most famous is surely the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, better known as the Städel Museum, a gallery of ancient painting and contemporary modern art, boasting a collection of more than 3,000 paintings, sculptures and photographs relating to a historical period spanning more than 700 years, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Notable artists include Botticelli, Picasso, Monet and many others....

EISERNEG STEG AND THE OLD TOWN-THE MOST ROMANTIC PART

Leaving the museum, just cross the Main river and head for the Old Town. But be sure to do it via the Eiserneg Steg, the most beautiful and romantic bridge in all of Frankfurt. The “Iron Bridge ‘is particularly famous not only because many of the boat tours along the Main River depart from here, but also because of the many locks left by locals and visitors and, last but not least, because of the stunning view, perobably the best one, of the Frankfurt skyline. A truly magical place.

(Eiserneg Steg)

Once you cross it, you will find yourself along the Mainkai, the riverfront that divides the Main river from the Old Town. You will soon realize that the two banks of the river are a very crowded area, especially by locals: between joggers, bikers... this area is always populated at all hours of the day, even in the evenings during the warmest periods. And Mainkai is, of all places, the most famous and beloved stretch of riverfront for anyone visiting Frankfurt.

Before we start exploring Frankfurt's historic center, we stop at the city's most important indoor market. You know, we particularly like these kind of places, where you can breathe a decidedly genuine atmosphere and, above all, come into contact with locals. The Kleinmarkthalle, located in the heart of “old” Frankfurt, is a market where you can buy fruits and vegetables, fresh cheeses and foods from different countries, but also taste specialties of the city. Especially bratwurst (or currywurst) accompanied by sauerkraut and potatoes, Handkäse mit Musik, a beef cheese marinated with... music! No c'mon, just kidding: it is allowed to macerate for some time in a mixture of oil, vinegar, onion and cumin.

(Kleinmarkthalle)

With full bellies, we head for Römerberg, the real beating heart of the Old Town. There is no doubt that, for any European city, the oldest part is always the most fascinating. And Frankfurt is no different, with its medieval area being the de facto starting point in exploring the city and among the main things to see in two days in Frankfurt. Romerberg is a large square surrounded by scenic and colorful buildings in the characteristic style with wooden beams, belonging to the 15th and 17th centuries. The main one is definitely the Rathaus, or town hall, found in many of the main squares in German cities. During the period of the Holy Roman Empire, ceremonies for the election and coronation of emperors were held here, which is why there are still 52 depictions of emperors in the Hall of Emperors.

(Rathaus)

In the center of the square stands the Fountain of Justice (Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen), depicting the deity in the act of holding a set of scales, which in the past symbolized the function of overseeing the commercial activities of merchants.

The walking tour of the old town, on this first day exploring Frankfurt, takes us to the cathedral, in German Kaiserdorm, located really just a stone's throw from Romemberg. It is the city's main place of worship, consecrated in 1239 and in the past the official seat for the election of the kings of the Holy Roman Empire and 10 Germanic emperors.

(Kaiserdorm)

Also known as St. Bartholomew's Cathedral, it boasts a 94-meter-high bell tower from which there is an unparalleled view of the entire city. Admission to the tower is chargeable.

If the cathedral represents Frankfurt's history, the nearby Paulskirche, on the other hand, represents much of German history: in this church consecrated in 1833, the foundations of the current German constitution were in fact dictated, while today it is home to various cultural events and important award ceremonies.

THE HISTORY OF FRANKFURT TOLD IN THE HISTORISCHES MUSEUM

There is no need to takesubways, streetcars and buses on this first day. Frankfurt's historic center is all quite collected, and once back along the Mainkai, in a very few minutes we reach the Historisches Museum Frankfurt, the second museum of this day. Among the things to do and see in two days in Frankfurt we would recommend this particular museum, dedicated to the history of the city. Inside, eight sections tell the story of Frankfurt's past, present and future, including a space dedicated to young children, the Young Museum. The museum is really huge and is divided into two buildings: the Saalhof, and the Exibithion Building. It is not so easy to get your bearings, the advice is to arm yourself with a lot of patience and, if you really want to do it right, to devote at least half a day to this museum.

If, like us, you have just a couple of hours instead, start your visit at the interactive Young Museum (Saalhof, levels 0, 2 and 3) and, after admiring the Sonnemann Hall (an event space overlooking the Main) head to the Collectors' Museum area (Sallhof, levels 1-4), full of private collections from the 17th-18th-19th and 20th centuries.

To close your experience in the Saalhof area, don't miss the Staufer Chapel (level 0), located in the Stauferbau, the oldest building in Frankfurt. Here you will also find the oldest copy of the Holy Roman Empire insignia. Probably the most fascinating area of the Saalhof building is the Toll Tower (level 1), dating back to 1456. At that time the tower was part of a sophisticated system of gates to the medieval walled city. All 4 floors of the tower are accessible by a spiral staircase at least 500 years old! In the Exhibition Building (level 3), on the other hand, you will find “Frankfurt now,” a 70 m2 model of the city, and “Frankfurt Once,” five themed galleries on the city's history and development.

We preferred the Historisches Museum, but the other great alternative to this museum, if you only have two days to spend here in Frankfurt, is a visit to the Goethehaus. That's right, because back in 1749, at No. 23 of Hirschgraben,Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, one of Germany's greatest literary figures, was born. You can visit his birth house, which has been renovated and converted into a museum, spread over four floors and partly furnished with original Goethe family furniture.

(Alt - Sachsenhausen)

Instead, we are already headed back across the Main River to the quaint Alt-Sachsenhausen district. In this picturesque area of Frankfurt there is no shortage of clubs, breweries and restaurants, where you can taste the city's culinary specialties. And, in addition to those already mentioned during the visit to the Kleinmarkthalle, let's add the legendary schnitzel, consisting of a slice of veal made thin by beating, here served with a delicious green sauce, typical of Frankfurt, the Grüne Soße, prepared with no less than seven herbs. And to drink? Beer, lots of beer...From Weiss to Keller, from Radler to Bock. And then there is Apfelwein, the Frankfurt cider, the city's typical liqueur.

Two days in Frankfurt, the European "Mainhattan" (Day 2)

If the first day led us to visit only the historic center of Frankfurt, during the second we will skirt it, paying special attention to some places a little' out of the usual tourist circuit, alternating them with icons of the city such as the Stock Exchange, whose visit is likely the most prestigious highlight of the two days in Frankfurt. And yes, if we were to give a vote to the two days, the second one would certainly receive a much higher rating, because there are so many places that have greatly impressed us: above all the climb on the top of the Main Tower, the main skyscraper of the financial district of Frankfurt, or a park located close to the center, the beautiful Bethmann Park, a corner of the east which is really scenic and that you would not expect to find in a European city. Among the many things to do and see in two days in Frankfurt, we strongly recommend not to miss this beautiful green space for any reason...

(Frankfurt Skyline)

AWAY FROM THE CITY CHAOS - GUNTHERSBURG PARK AND BERGER STRASSE

If you have chosen the comfortable Campanile Frankfurt Offenbach as your base to visit Frankfurt, you can opt for a circular route that will allow you to easily reach all the places we are about to mention in this post. We used public transport only once, at the beginning of the day, to reach the first place to visit, the Günthersburgpark, a beautiful city park located in the Nordend-Ost, from which we will start our walking tour through the streets of Frankfurt. Located just 100 meters from the hotel, there is a bus stop (line 103) which in about 15 minutes will take you to the park created by banker Carl Mayer von Rothschild and opened to the public in 1892. Here, in the Middle Ages, stood a castle that in 1306 took the name of Günthersburg in honor of the owner Jakob Günther. The name of the park comes from here, from the former castle.

The Günthersburgpark is the starting point for a very characteristic street of Frankfurt, the Berger Strasse, which connects the Nordend-Ost district (and then Bornheim) with the old town. Along these 3 km, visitors will discover the most authentic Frankfurt, between shops selling second-hand items, department stores, restaurants and bars, located mainly in the southern part (around Merianplatz), the hub of the nightlife of this area of Frankfurt.

THE MOST SCENIC PARK IN FRANKFURT

Walking along Berger Strasse you will get, after about twenty minutes of walking, to the Bethmann Park which, despite being small, is by far the most beautiful and scenic city park in Frankfurt. Protected from the traffic by its surroundings (after all we are along the perimeter of the old town!) by walls decidedly thick, this oasis of peace located in the former garden of the family Bethmann, allows the visitor to feel really in the east of the world for a few minutes.

(Bethmann Park)

Colorful flower beds, a Chinese garden (Garten des Himmlischen Friedens) with attached pond, bridge and portal decorated with dragons characterize this authentic jewel that invites to meditation, while across the street (but still part of Bethmann Park), don’t miss the huge fountain, the Bethmann Fountain.

SHOPPING IN THE OLD TOWN AND VISITING THE STOCK EXCHANGE

Leaving the Bethmann Park you will find yourself, in fact, in the historic center of Frankfurt am Main, or rather in the shopping area called Zeil, completely pedestrian and nicknamed "the German Fifth Avenue".

(Zeil - Frankfurt)

Along the way, do not miss the huge shopping center Zeilgalerie, from which you can enjoy (on the top floor) a beautiful view of Frankfurt.

(Zeilgalerie)

Just behind the Zeilgalerie, on Saturdays, you will notice a beautiful food market: lots of stalls selling bratwurst and all local specialties. It’s a popular meeting place for the people of Frankfurt, right in front of the prestigious stock exchange (Frankfurter Wertpapierbörse) that visitors just can't unsee. In front of it, in fact, stand two statues, the bear and the bull, two iconic sculptures representing the fluctuation of stock markets around the world.

If you love everything about finance, we highly recommend visiting the Stock Exchange, whose admission is free but you have to book the time slot on the official website (https://www.deutsche-boerse.com/dbg-en/about-us/engagement/experience-the-stock-exchange-calendar-overview). The Frankfurt stock exchange is one of the most important in the world and the visit represents a small journey into the world of finance: in the first part, in fact, you will find several explanatory panels (some interactive) that will introduce you to this environment, In the second you can admire the real stock exchange, a place where the history of markets is written not only in Europe but around the world.

THE HISTORY OF FRANKFURT: THE ESCHENHEIMER TURM AND THE ALTE OPER

We are walking along the northern part of the old town, from east to west. Which means that the skyscrapers of Frankfurt’s imposing financial district are getting closer. We still have a few more stops before venturing into the city’s skyline, such as the Eschenheimer Turm, an ancient medieval tower of the fifteenth century, once part of the city walls and the only one tower, In fact, to be saved after the Second World War (there were once 61).

(Eschenheimer Turm)

Not far away and still in the heart of the Innestadt, the central district of the city of Frankfurt, stands out the beautiful Alte Oper, the old opera house that is nowadays used as a concert hall. The theatre was destroyed by bombing in 1944 and, after its slow reconstruction and subsequent reopening (1981), has become an iconic place for classical music lovers: its flagship is the Großer Saal, the "Great Hall" (2500 seats).

(Alte Oper)

As anticipated, we are now close to the skyline, but before entering we continue north, where is located the Palmen Garten, a beautiful botanical garden of more than 30 hectares, the largest in all of Germany and visited every year by thousands of famous visitors and artists. In the Palmengarten you will find a rich collection of plants from all climatic zones of the world, a vast area organized in greenhouses and a really scenic rose garden, which every year in June, gives life to the unmissable Festival of Roses and Lights (entrance fee: 9 euro, updated to 2025). Not far from the Palmen Garten, in the Bockenheimer district, there is a really unusual metro station that really deserves a quick stop. It is the Bockenheimer Warte, whose entrance is really... creative, indeed a real work of art. The reason? Simple, the entrance to the metro is "a train that crashes to the ground", a really brilliant work by Peter Pininski who made a simple subway stop an iconic attraction.

THE SKYLINE AND MAIN TOWER, THE MODERN SOUL OF FRANKFURT
Among the many things to see in two days in Frankfurt, you can’t really miss the financial district, the modern soul of the city. From Bockenheimer Warte, walk through the Westend-Sud district (for dinosaur lovers we recommend a visit to the Senckenberg Naturmuseum)...

... and head to the huge skyscrapers that make up the area west of the old town, which for many is "Mainhattan" due to its resemblance with the Manhattan of New York.

It is, in fact, the "island of skyscrapers" because there are really many (about 100) of them, with a height ranging from 180 meters to 300 meters of the Kommerz Bank tower. Since the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union, the tower had briefly reclaimed its position as the tallest building in the European Union only to lose the title again in 2021 when Poland's Varso Tower topped out. But we are here because, like many other visitorst, we are ready to climb on the Main Tower observation deck (entrance: 9 euros, updated to 2025), the fourth tallest building not only in Frankfurt but in all of Germany. It is a massive 56-storey building, with a panoramic elevator running at 7 metres per second to take visitors to the observation deck, from where they can enjoy a stunning 360 degree view of the entire city of Frankfurt.

Well, if you don’t have enough, on the 53rd floor of the Main Tower there is also a very elegant and definitely not cheap restaurant, the Main Tower Restaurant.

Not far from the Main Tower, and close to the Jewish Museum, do not miss the Willy-Brandt-Platz, with the huge sculpture representing the Euro and the important meaning for the city of Frankfurt.

Raccomandatissimo!

And for dinner? We recommend you to come back to the district of Alt-Sachsenhausen, undoubtedly the best in terms of dinners and after dinner. This time we chose the excellent Daheim im Lorsbacher Thal and, once again, we tasted the many culinary specialties of Frankfurt, from green sauce to schintzel, from bratwurst to the mythical weiss bier. Highly recommended!
