Londra, quando la patria del tennis chiama... (day 1)

You have learned how we are during this year and and know very well that by reading our blog you will not find the best way to visit a city or how long it takes to visit a museum, maybe you will find a nice and cheap restaurant or a way to save money during your vacation. Even the story of the city we just visited, London, won't be a detailed guide about "where to go" or "what to see", also because we are talking about... London, you don't need us to know that Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey worth a visit ...

(Victoria Station)

We visited the most important city of Great Britain twice, and always the main reason was a sport event, a tennis event. In 2009, our first time in London, was Wimbledon, then the Atp World Tour Finals. We spent basically two days visiting London and if five years ago we opted for the sightseeing bus, the second time we used the underground. Without a guide, and without an idea about what to visit or not.

(Knightsbridge)

If you say London and you're going to save money, obviously you are flying with Ryanair to Stansted, one hour far from the capital downtown. With 16 pounds a Terravision bus will take you there and back: Victoria Station or Liverpool Street are the stops

If London is very very simple to visit using the underground, it's not so easy to understand how to buy tickets. Surely we got it wrong and made some mistakes, but with the "Oyster"it has been a disaster (if you have to go to London, check the operation of this card). So we opted for a day ticket for the 1-6 areas. Expensive (£ 8.60 per day, £25.40 for three days), even if we were allowed to use this ticket even for the famous red double-decker bus.

(Harrods)

We immediately realize that London public transport are very expensive and that it's not a "cheaper city". Our base is Ibis hotel, not far from Kensington. It 's already evening, it's dinner time! We choose to act, as always, as americans, but if  we guessed the choice during the two following nights, you can not say the same for the first dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe (Green Park area, five-minute walk from the underground station). We are forced to wait for one hour before getting the table and the menu is very expensive, even if the quality is very good (we order ribs and roast chicken. If you look for the ''American Style 'in London there is something better and cheaper...

We leave the Hard Rock Cafè very full, the only thing we can do is walking for a while. 10 minutes? No, no... 4 chilometers, crossing Green Park till reaching Buckingham Palace. Is it over? Of course not: crossing St James's Park we finally get to the underground station. Maybe it's time to come back...

Londra, quando la patria del tennis chiama... (day 2)

Day 2 is… the tennis day. It’s time to go to the O2 Arena for the Atp World Tour Finals, but first a quick stop at the world famous Harrods, in the district of Knisghtsbridge. There’s no need to explain what Harrods is, everybody knows about the brands you can find inside this huge mall, but unless you are a milionaire you can just look… more interesting is the food department: you'll find everything, from Asian to the Indian. Marco tastes Middle Eastern food, sushi  for Ale… and of course a cupcake. The prices, at least here, are interesting ...

On the afternoon spent at the O2 Arena there would be plenty to say. First, the O2 is something terribly modern. It seems to be in the Us, inside the arena there is a real town with plenty of restaurants of all types and kinds. We watch two matches of the Finals, a double and then a single, with Ale’s hero Novak Djokovic on court. "Nole" wins the match and ensure the number one in the ranking at the end of the season and so we have the fortune to attend to his award. Yes, we are at the top of the stands (£ 25 a ticket), but just being there is special.

Leaving the O2 Arena in the late afternoon we head to the Covent Garden area, one of the most fascinating in London. Shops and restaurants on every corner, although it must be said you can find something like this anywhere in London. And you will find people everywhere, really everywhere.  Piccadilly Circus, the "Times Square" of London is our first stop and, accompanied by the London crowd, we walk for about twenty minutes till reaching Covent Garden. Shops, boutiques and restaurants  characterize the district. We are there just for Shake Shack of course, the second reason why we’ve chosen to spend the weekend in London. But while we are walking TGI Friday's appears in front of us…

(Piccadilly Circus)

(Covent Garden)

L'America a è a Londra.

America is in London. And how can we not stop at our favorite restaurant? P. S. Sooner or later TGI will come to Italy and nothing will ever be the same in terms of  “American-style restaurant chains”.

The usual walk that becomes a kind of marathon. We would like to stop at London Eye, but price is very high (29£), so we just admire it

(London by night)

(London eye & Carousel)

As digestive the usual walk that, as always, will turn into a marathon We would like to stop at London Eye and get on this famous ferris wheel, but the cost (29£ each!) is too high...

Never mind, colors and lights are beautiful even if you're not on the London Eye We decide to walk along the Thames up to Blackfriars, where finally we find the subway station...

Londra, quando la patria del tennis chiama... (day 3)

The third and final day in the capital is dedicated to the visit of the city. We don't have any particular ideas, we just know that we would like to see a "different" London, not the main things you should see when you are in this beautiful city. At the subway station, thanks to an excellent map (and beacuse the next train would arrive after 13'...) we define our schedule. "Why don't we go to Nottingh Hill?" Ale says, "... and we might go to Chelsea as well I know is one of the most beautiful areas" Marco answers. Perfect, in ten minutes we've planned the morning: internet, google and, while we are waiting for the train, we read the most interesting things to see in these two districts.

(Chelsea)

Shops, pubs and restaurants characterize this district: it also gives us a pearl. Walking along King's Road, in fact, we find  a beautiful food market, with stalls from all over the world.

Cuba, Argentina, Jamaica, even Italy, and many other countries are represented. If only we had known about it, we wouldn't have had a full English breakfast with bacon, eggs and company ... so we just eat a cupcake, a minicupcakes. I'd like to tell you about how delicious they were, but Ale ate all of them using the same old excuse: "They were small ... and then you told me me you didn't want to taste them".

Thanks to google we discover that close to the markets there is also a shop of the inventor of the miniskirt, Mary Quant. A quick stop is really mandatory ...

Leaving Chelsea, just get on the red bus headed to Notting Hill. Obviously we take the righ bus, but this is the wrong direction and we realize that something is going wront when we cross the Thames. Never mind, Notting Hill, one of London's most exclusive neighborhoods, is still waiting for us...

(Notting Hill)

The main attraction is definitely the Notting Hill Portobello Road Market, a long street where every day the market is held and attracts hundreds of tourists. It's the "right" day and the time: on Saturday, infact, the exhibitors of antiques make the Portobello Market the largest antiques market in the world.

E poi è già pomeriggio, almeno il Tower Bridge vogliamo vederlo o no?

We don't like big crowds and there are too many people. In addition to that we are not so interested in Antiques, so we prefer not to complete the entire road. It's already afternoon, it's time to go to the Tower Bridge.

Scendiamo al London Bridge, nei pressi del Monument to the Great Fire of London, e costeggiamo il Tamigi...

The subway takes us to the London Bridge, close to the Monument to the Great Fire of London: in the distance we can see the beautiful Tower Bridge.

Maybe beacuse light-blue dominates in London, maybe because it's getting dark... but atmosphere and colours are amazing.

While we walk we see the Tower Bridge getting closer...

Ovviamente lo attraversiamo...

Of course we cross the bridge...

mentre downtown London comincia ad illuminarsi.

while downtown London is getting illuminated.

Actually, our adventure in London is going to end, but... What's the best American food (we challenge anyone to say that it's non the truth!) you can find even in London and Istanbul? Of course the Shake Shack burger! Let's come back to Covent Garden, where we meet Carlos Bernardes, one of the best tennis referees. The usual inevitable queue at Shake Shack but finally we are in front of the best burger in the world (£4.50). It must be said that we did not expect a burger as good as the one in the US, but we have to say it's close enough to the american one...

"No, no... se è il bis niente coda... vi faccio passare davanti a tutti". Adesso sì che possiamo tornare a casa...

Just one burger is of course not enough and while we are in queue, a lady tells us "What are you doing here, in line, with our beer in you hand?"... "just the second round" we say. "Oh no, no... Is it the second round? You don't have to stay in line". Now we can really come home...
