Visit Big Island, Hawaii - Five day itineraries around the Island (day 1: Kona)

DAY 5: Hilo and its sorroundings

Oceans, beaches, but also five volcanoes, coffee, beer ... two cities so different and so unique, where everything is ... big (not just the island) and where everything, even and above all due to the frequent volcanic eruptions, everything is in constant transformation. Big Island is the cradle of the Hawaiian kingdom, because they were born here and then became what they are today, on an island where Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, Kilauea, Hualai and Kohala. Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world, continue to increase the volume of a land that also and above all lives of spirituality. Big Island, so fascinating but equally insidious, so rich in historical and natural beauties, but also not easy to visit. Yes, because if you want to get it right, it takes several days (at least five full days) to visit the entire island and it is unthinkable to stay overnight only in Kona or in Hilo.  We made this mistake, staying for six nights in the cheapest Hilo. For this reason, also thanks to our experience, we want to suggest you a five-day itinerary on the island of Big Island, a path that includes two nights in Kona and three in Hilo. After telling you about Kauai, Oahu and Maui, it's time to take you to discovery the territory of Big Island ...

(Kona International Airport)

KONA, TRA STORIA, CAFFE' e... BIRRA

KONA, BETWEEN HISTORY, COFFEE and ... BEER
Kona, the most famous city on Big Island, is completely different from Hilo, located on the opposite side of the island. They are separated only by 76 miles, but reaching the opposite side of the island is definitely not that easy. Yes, because people will have to cross the Mauna Kea, simply the highest mountain range in the world when measured from its underwater base. Especially when night falls, moving from Kona to Hilo could become a huge problem. And that, we do know a little something about that... Kona is indeed the perfect place for families: here tourists will find the big resorts, here there is a very livable downtown and the most beautiful beaches. We begin the exploration of Big Island from Kailua-Kona (two cities that are actually known as Kona): the beating heart is its Alii Drive (3 km long), where you will find restaurants, many shops but also historical references. Here you just feel very peaceful...

A self-respecting Kona walking tour should start from the Hulihee Palace: built in 1838, it was also purchased by King Kalakua and still retains much of the original furnishings. Across the street stands the Mokuaikaua Church, the first church in Hawaii. After several fires, the current stone structure was built, partly thanks to recycled stones from a nearby Heiau.

(Hulihee Palace & Mokuaikaua Church)

About 400 meters north, do not miss the Kamakahonu National Historic Landmark, the residence of Kamehameha I: the history of the whole Hawaii was written  in this temple, when King Kamehameha II, challenging the Kapu (or the law) which prohibited men and women from eating together, decided to feast with his mother and stepmother, ending the Hawaiian system of kapu.

(Kamakahonu National Historic Landmark)

For those who love shopping we recommend the Kona Village Market Place (75-5767 Ali'i Dr, Kailua) and the Kona Inn Shopping Village (75-5767 Ali'i Dr), but if you are looking for something more authentic, don't miss the many farmers markets that populate the island.

(Kona Village Market Place)

Here in Kona the best farmers markets are the Kona Sunset Farmers Market (hours of operation: Wednesday from 2 pm), the Keauhou Farmers Market (Saturday from 8 am to 12 pm - address: Keauhou Shopping Center, fronting Ace Hardware. 78-6831 Alii Drive), the Ho'oulu Community Farmers Market (Wednesday from 9 am to 12 pm: Sheraton Kona Resort and spa at Keauhou bay: 78-128 Ehukai Street) and Alii Garden Market Place (Wednesday from 9 am to 4 pm: 2311, 75-6129 Alii Dr). You'll also find the best poke on the island right right here, in Kona, at Poke Shack (76-6246 Alii Dr) or at Umekes Ali'i Plaza (75-143 Hualalai Rd)

(Poke dish at Umekes Ali'i Plaza)

        - Heavenly Hawaiian Coffee Farm

        - Holualoa Kona Coffee Company

        - Hula Daddy Kona Coffee

        - Greenwell Farms
organizza tour gratuiti per tutto il giorno.

         - Kona Joe
aperto tutti i giorni dalle 8:00 alle 17:00. Visite autoguidate gratuite e visite guidate a pagamento.

Every self-respecting meal, not only in Kona, but throughout the island, can only end with a cup of the legendary Kona coffee, introduced in 1813 by Don Francisco de Paula Y Marin, a Spanish doctor. While in Kona you can visit several plantations and many of which also offer free tours. One of all is the Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation, located at 1000 meters above sea level, which organizes guided tours (reservations are not required) from Monday to Sunday (from 9.30 am to 4 pm). At the end of the tour you can also taste the many types of coffee produced and, if you are lucky, you will also be offered a coffee-chocolate. Obviously the Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation is not the only plantation that can be visited on Big Island. Among others, we would recommend:

        - Rooster Farms
For over 30 years it has been a certified company of organic Kona coffee cultivation which makes it the oldest certified company.

        - Heavenly Hawaiian Coffee Farm
It organizes free tours from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:00. Tours are "farm to cup" and end with a tasting on the lanai.

        - Wailele Estates Plantation
Organize 1 to 2 hours free tours during the harvest season (July to December)

        - Holualoa Kona Coffee Company

It organizes free tours all day.

         - Kona Joe
It's open every day from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Free self-guided tours and paid in-depth guided tours.

If coffee is a kind of religion, beer on Big Island is not far behind. Founded in 1994 the Kona Brewery is, in fact, one of the best-selling craft beers in the world and: if you're in Kona, it's unthinkable not to visit the company's headquarters, which also offers daily tours at a cost of $ 15 per per person. It is one of the two locations of the Kona Brewery on Big Island: the historic (and first) is this one, the Kona Pub and Brewery, which offers tours on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 10.30 am and 3.00 pm, on Wednesday at 10.30 am, at 12 pm and 3.00 pm, on Saturday at 10.30 am, at 12 pm, at 2 pm, at 3 pm and at 4 pm, on Sunday at 10.30 am, at 12 pm, at 2 pm and at 3 pm. If you are not interested in the tour, you can enjoy their beers in the adjacent restaurant-bar.

(Kona Brewing)

Among the many beers you'll be able to taste, we mention the Big Wave Golden Ale (light-bodied golden beer with a tropical hop aroma), Longbord Island Lager (crisp, pale-gold lager made with choice malts and aromatic hops), Gold Cliff Ipa (features real pineapple, along with bright, tropical fruit aromas of Mosaic and Citra hops and a hint of smooth caramel malt), Hanalei Island Ipa (Passion fruit, orange and guava), Fire Rock Pale Ale (copper-colored ale made from roasted malts and a selection of premium hops.) and Wailua Wheat (golden beer). And then there are those in a limited version, such as the legendary Castaway Ipa (bold, citrusy hops with a touch of mango and passionfruit balanced by rich caramel malts) and Lavaman Red Ale (amber beer with a subtle malt flavor with chocolate) and those inspired by the Hawaiian islands. For example the Koko Brown Ale (hazelnut, caramel flavor and a toasted malt taste), the Kua Bay Ipa (India Pale ale) and the Hibiscus Brut Ipa.

VISIT THE KALOKO-HONOKOHAU NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK
 BETWEEN HISTORY AND NATURE
At the end of day 1 on Big Island, you can enjoy the sunset in the beautiful Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park (not far from the airport), thus getting some... nature (and possibly even an easy nice trail) in a day where you experienced a different Hawaii.

(Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park - Visitor Center)

The park, founded in 1978, is considered sacred by locals, whose ancestors settled here right along the rugged coast north of Kona. An impervious but fascinating area: the extension of Kaloko-Honokohau exceeds 470 hectares and its conformation is very heterogeneous including both tropical forests and coastal areas which are perfect for swimming and diving.

(Ala Mauka Maka Trail & Ala Kahakai Trail)

Here it is hot, very hot, but we still recommend taking the beautiful Ala Mauka Maka trail (2.4 km), which will lead you to sacred temples, stone slides called hōlua and much more till you get to the ocean. Once you reach the ocean, turn right and follow the beach along the Ala Kahakai trail (1.5 km) which will join the Ala Hu'e Hu'e trail (turn right) after about twenty minutes walk (1.2 km). If, however, you go straight ahead, the loop will stretch for another 2.5 km

(Ala Kahakai trail)

After turning right, follow the trail and, in about half an hour to forty minutes, you will reach the visitor center (leaving the beach and approaching the road again) where you started the hike. The total length of the three trails is approximately 5 km. Consider 2 hours to complete the loop.

Visit Big Island, Hawaii - Five day itineraries around the Island (day 2: Kona coast)

Nonostante sia pieno inverno, fa caldo. Tanto caldo. Quale scegliere? Beh, avrete onestamente l'imbarazzo della scelta...

Although it is the middle of the winter, it's hot in Kona. Very hot. We had not yet visited Hawaii in the winter, It took us all of five minutes to realize that the 50th American state is always beautiful, in summer as in winter, in spring as in autumn. How beautiful is the whole Kona Coast and in particular the southern slope, which represents the highlight of day 2 in the largest of the Hawaiian islands. It's also finally time for a bath in the ocean, because a very large part of the Kona Coast has some of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Hawaii. Which one to choose? Well, you will honestly be spoiled for choice ...

(Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park)

KONA COAST - THE BEAUTIES OF KEALAKEKUA BAY
Kealakekua Bay is simply the first point of the islands reached by a European expedition, and, in fact, one of the most historic areas of Hawaii. But it is also one of the most inaccessible areas of the island, a very important tourist destination for people who love snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking. The first documented arrival on this bay dates back to January 1779 with the ship 'Resolution and Discovery' led by Captain James Cook, which was not very well welcomed by the Hawaiians. both the first time and, a month later, when he returned with his crew. A violent clash came out in which the captain lost his life. It is possible today to visit a monument that illustrates that time with drawings entitled 'the death of Cook': it's reachable with an excursion of about an hour or by boat.

(Napo'opo'o road - Kealakekua Bay)

DISCOVERING THE BIG ISLAND BEES, THE KINGDOM OF HONEY
If you're coming from Kailua-Kona, don't forget to spend the morning driving the loop along the "160" which will then join the main road, the "11", or the Hawaii Belt Road. It's a few hours trip that will make you discover the great beauties of the bay, starting with the Big Island Bees, Hawaii's largest honey company. The Big Island Bees produces different types of honey: the most famous is certainly the Lehua light honey, one of the rarest in the world, which is found only in Hawaii and is produced in late spring-early summer.

Those who love the legendary macadamia nuts will certainly taste the Macadamia Nut Blosson Honey, a dark honey produced in winter and early spring. Wilelaiki and Lehua and Cinnamon honey complete the package of honey. The company also offers daily tours lasting about an hour (admission price: 10 dollars) which ends with the tasting of the different honeys.

The Napo'opo'o road, a curvy road, which led you to the Big Island Bees and then to the Puuhonua Road that runs along the sea, is worth the trip alone: a detour that will not disappoint you: it ends right in the park that gives the name to the road, the Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park. Yes, because natural beauty and history here on Big Island  alternate unabated.

This is yet another sacred park for Hawaiians, because nothing is stronger than the "Kapu", the laws based on the spirit, the management of the environment and the social order. The violation of these rules meant very severe penalties for hawaiians people, however justice also provided for ... mercy. There was, in fact, on every Hawaiian island, a refuge, the Puuhonua, where those who had broken the laws were "cleaned up" in the soul by the priests. Assuming he or she made it before his pursuers...

Once released, nobody could hurt him any more. If you are even a little curious about the history of Hawaii and its people, you will love this park. The 1 km trail will take you to all all the sacred places of the park starting from the temple (rebuilt in 1650) which housed the remains of 23 tribal chiefs.

Each stop is indicated by a number, connected to the map that you got at the visitor center (admission price: 20 dollars per car), which tells in detail what you are visiting.

There are still three stops that we recommend before coming back to Kona and finally get to beaches. The first is one of the most fascinating churches in all of Hawaii, almost hidden in the heart of the bay: the Painted Church (84-5140 Painted Church Rd, Captain Cook). It is a small miniature cathedral, built between 1899 and 1904 by a Belgian priest, Father John Berchmans Velghe: it still calls the faithful every second Sunday of the month for the Hawaiian mass which ends with a community breakfast.

The view from the church is honestly amazing. Then there is one of the most beautiful fruit stand of the whole island, the South Kona Fruit Stand (opening hours: Monday to Saturday until 6 pm, Sunday until 4 pm) located along the Hawaii Belt Road (the exact address is the following: Near the old Higashi Store, between mile marker 103 & 104).

(Painted Church)

On the outskirts of , don't forget to photograph the Saint Peter By the Sea Church, which everyone here knows as "The Little Blue Church". Overlooking the sea, the white and blue church, built in 1839, is one of the most beautiful photographic spots on the island.

(Sain Peter By the Sea Church)

BIG ISLAND'S BEACHES, WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE?
We know very well that one of the hottest topics when it comes to Hawaii is always ... beaches and the ocean. Which is the best beach on Big Island? Is the sea beautiful? All questions that you will surely be asking yourself. We will try to answer by proposing you some of the most beautiful beaches of the whole island. Taken it for granted the fact that, as we have said many times, you should come to Hawaii non for the beaches and the ocean...  If you don't want to move too far from Kailua-Kona, the easiest solution is the Magic Sands beach (address: Ali'i Drive, by Kona Magic Sands Resort; at La'aloa Bay, Kailua-Kona).

Sicuramente Manini'owali Beach (Kua Bay). Acqua trasparente, sabbia bianchissima e colori paradisiaci (indirizzo: Hwy. 19, Paved Road With Sign, Near Marker 88, opposite the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery, Kailua-Kona).

Within 20 miles you'lss easily see the best beaches on the island, one's prettier than another.. Our favorite? It's Definitely the Manini'owali Beach (Kua Bay). Crystal clear water, white sand and heavenly colors (address: Hwy. 19, Paved Road With Sign, Near Marker 88, opposite the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery, Kailua-Kona). As with all Kona Coast beaches, the sunset here has a magical flavor. Another very interesting beach, especially if you are traveling with children, is Hapuna Beach with the attached Waialea Beach. A 1 km long strip of white sand, between some black lava outcrops. It gets only 25 centimeters of rain in a year: it's just always sunny over there, but the thick vegetation also offers a pretty decent shelter.

The last two beaches we want to recommend are Kaunaʻoa Beach, also known as Mauna Kea Beach because it overlooks the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. It is one of the most beautiful on the island, however, during the winter months, the waves are normally stronger (address: 62-100 Mauna Kea Beach Dr, Waimea). The other one is Makalawena / Pu'u Ali'i which we've left it for the end but that does not mean its any less beautiful. It's just the least easy to get to. In fact, it takes at least an hour's walk to reach this wild beach, which will easily allow you to admire seals and sea turtles.

Visit Big Island, Hawaii - Five day itineraries around the Island (day 3 - il sud: Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Green Sand Beach & Punaluuu Black Sand Beach)

We have told you about how beautiful the state of Hawaii is both in summer and in winter because of that pleasant temperature that distinguishes this formidable paradise on earth. However, unlike summer, which gives almost endless days (the sun rises early and sets late), during the winter time you will never have to forget that the sun goes down at 5 pm. And very quickly. For this reason, the five (needed) days on Big Island may have to become six or even  seven if your plan is to explore the whole island in winter. Also because, as can be seen from today's stage (only 140 miles, but it takes several hours to complete the route), distances on the biggest island of Hawaii play an important part.

MOST PHOTOGENIC BEACHES OF BIG ISLAND: GREEN & BLACK SAND BEACH
You'll be going to leave Kona. We're going to spend the next three days on the opposite side of the island, in the city of Hilo. The southern side of the island keeps us company: it's overlooked by the Kilauea volcano and the beautiful Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Before reaching it, we will have the opportunity to visit two of the most beautiful (and photogenic) beaches on the island, one of them however reachable only if you have a lot, a lot of time (the "famous" sixth or seventh day, which we don't have). The Green Sand Beach, or Papakolea beach, is simply gorgeous. We are talking about one of only four green sand beaches in the world, the others being Talofofo Beach, Guam; Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island in the Galapagos Islands; and Hornindalsvatnet, Norway. The main attraction is precisely the sand made of olivine, the first mineral which crystallizes when the basaltic lava starts to cool down. How do you get to the Green Sand Beach? Once you park your car at the end of South Point Road, in Naalehu, you'll have to walk for at least an hour under the burning sun of the south of the island. There would also be the possibility to get to the Green Sand Beach through 4wd vehicle made available (illegally) to tourists by locals, but we strongly recommend not to use this option as it is illegal and dangerous for the fragile Hawaiian ecosystem. The other beautiful and unmissable beach in the south of the island is the Punualuu Black Sand Beach (Ninole loop road, Pahala), between coconut palms and turquoise waters. It is the black beach of Big Island, frequented mainly by locals. The Black Sand beach is made of basalt and created from the lava that flows into the ocean. It is here that we saw our first sea turtle, along one of the most incredible beaches in the whole of Hawaii.

BIRD PARK & MAUNA LOA ROAD, A THRILLS ROAD
After experiencing the emotions of the white sand (the previous day), green and black sands, it's now time to dive into the island's main attraction, Hawaii'i Volcanoes National Park. Before you get there, however, don't miss the detour on the left, 2 km before entering the national park if you are coming from Kona. The detour along the Mauna Loa Road will take you to a parking lot: the 2 km of the Kipuka Pualuu Trail, also known as the "bird park", starts right there. The trail itself is not as exciting as others in the National Park, but it allow you, with a little luck, to admire part of the fauna of Hawaii: cardinals, iiwis, apapane, amakihi and elepaio while walking in the shade of the Koa, Ohia, Lehua and Mamane's trees.

For those who are looking for something more exciting, we recommend to drive the entire Mauna Loa Road and cover the 10 miles that lead to the Mauna Loa Lookout. The road alone is worth the trip. It is very narrow, sometimes too narrow for two cars and, especially in the final part, you may also find obstacles (and huge holes) along the roadway.

(Mauna Loa Road)

The first part of the climb is quite simple, due to the dual carriageway, but the last stretch is quite demanding even if you're a good driver. Once at the top you will find a small parking lot and a lookout, which offers interesting views over Hawaii'i Volcanoes National Park. However, this is not the top of the Mauna Loa volcano: the very long and demanding trail that leads to the top (we recommend it only to the most expert hikers) starts right here.

(Mauna Loa Lookout)

COME VISITARE L'HAWAI'I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

THE BEST WAY TO VISIT THE HAWAI'I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
Hawaii'i Volcanoes National Park has always been the main image of Big Island. After all, we're talking about the Kilauea, the only volcano whose summit can be reached by car, but also the most active volcano in the world (since 1983). Yet, despite each eruption causing incalculable disasters, the image of the "good volcano" persists: every time the Kilauea erupts, in fact, instead of taking shelter, the local population organizes picnics on the slopes of the mountain and admire the most spectacular fireworks in the whole earth.

Unfortunately, there is no national park more complicated to visit than Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The rangers work hard very hard to modify (or trace again) the over 240 km of trails and what we have been able to see is probably different from what you'll see in the future. When lava makes incandescent waterfalls, the park (like all the south of the island) changes its face.

However, one of the most beautiful images is precisely the lava that plunges into the sea, forming large clouds of steam that stagnate for kilometers on the boiling waters. The visit is not recommended for infants, pregnant women, people with health problems, heart and lung diseases.

Right close to the visitor center (Kilauea Visitor Center), you can hike what we think is one of the best trails in the park, the Sulfur Banks trail. Park your car in the parking lot dedicated to the visitor center and follow the trails that starts on the right of the Crater Rim road: if you follow the whole loop you will cross the road again and come back to the visitor center on the opposite side.

You will be surrounded by vapors created by the fenced solfatars that will accompany you for most of the 2.1 loop trail. If the trailhead is open (which is not obvious), don't forget that the second part of the loop, the one to the left of the Crater Rim, is called Sandalwood Trail, a small birdwatcher's paradise.

THE CRATER RIM, A LOOK IN THE VOLCANO
We found it closed, but if you are lucky enough, do not miss the beautiful and scenic Crater Rim, a circular road around the oval caldera on top of the Kilauea. The crater is 4 km wide, 92 meters deep and is the main attraction of the park. You will cross rain forests, admire smoking craters and vast devastated areas. The main stops along the Crater Rim are the Kilauea Observation Point (small detour on the left that allows you to look into the volcano), the Halemaumau Crater (walk to the caldera, where the vapors are abundant. The last eruption occurred here in 1974) and the scenographic Keanakako'i Overlook.

(Crater Rim - Area closed)

COSA VEDERE LUNGO LA CHAIN OF CRATER ROAD

WHAT TO SEE ALONG THE CHAIN OF CRATER ROAD
The road that we found open is the Chain of Craters Road. If you want to follow it, just turn left immediately after entering the park: it's 30 km long and leads to the ocean, crossing a beautiful lunar landscape made of lava (it takes at least 2 hours to drive the entire road and come back). The main stops along the Chain of Crater Road are the following:

(Chain of Craters Road)

1) Lua Manu Crater (km 0.8)
Lua Manu Crater is approximately 330 ft. (100 meters) in diameter and 125 ft. (38 meters) deep and was formed about 200 years ago. During the 1974 eruption of Keanakāko‘i, a fissure opened east of the forested Lua Manu Crater. The lava flow entered into the crater filling it with about 50 feet (15m) of lava, however about two-thirds of this lava later drained back into a fissure that cut its east crater wall.

2) Pauahi Crater (km 5.3)
Pauahi Crater is approximately 1800-2000 ft. (548.6-610 meters) long, 300-500 ft. (90-106.7 meters) deep and 300 ft. (90 meters) wide. In November of 1973 there was an eruption that lasted 31 days, creating the present crater floor. This eruption also opened a fissure east of the crater towards Puʻuhululu

4) Mauna Ulu Flow Across Chain of Craters Road (al km 6.6)

3) Mauna Ulu (km 6.0)
Mauna Ulu is approximately 400 ft. (121 meters) high from its pre-eruption base. At present Mauna Ulu Crater is approximately 100 ft. (30.5 meters) deep. It erupted in several phases from May 24, 1969 to July 22 of 1974.

4) Mauna Ulu Flow Across Chain of Craters Road (km 6.6)
The beginning of Mauna Uluʻs 1969 eruption began with a 2-3 mile fissure that opened left and right of this stop. This fissure eruption covered the portion of the Chain of Craters Road that created this stop.

7) Holei Sea Arch and End of Chain of Craters Road (al km 30.3)
Attualmente l'arco marino è alto circa 27,4 metri.

5) Mauna Loa o Mauna Ulu (km 10.3)
At this stop you will have an expansive view of the Mauna Ulu lava flow that crossed and re-crossed the Chain of Craters Road. Mau Loa O Mauna Ulu is the start of the Keauhou Trail to the coastal sites.

6) Kealakomo Lookout (km 15.9)
From this lookout you will have a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean and an expansive view of the vast lava field that covered portions of the ancient village of Kealakomo. The lookout is also a great place for a picnic lunch and excellent photographic area.

7) Holei Sea Arch and End of Chain of Craters Road (km 30.3)
At the end of Chain of Craters road, there is a short trail to the ocean and the Hōlei Sea Arch. At present, the sea arch is about 90 ft. (27.4 meters) high.

THE BEST TRAILS IN HAWAI'I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
In a park which is constantly changing and which often force you to skip entire areas (for example we couldn't hike two of the three trails we are going to mention), it is not easy to talk about trails. But, in case luck assists you, we recommend these three simple hikes:

1) Devastation Trail (length: 1km)
It is a 20 minutes walk suitable for everyone that leads ... into the heart of hell. Approximately 1/2 mile from Puʻu Puaʻi is the Devastation Trail parking area. You can park your car here and take a 30-minute walk through the cinder outfall of the 1959 eruption of Kīlauea Iki. This 1/2 mile (each way) paved trail is wheelchair and stroller accessible. Slowly this area is returning to life...

(Devastation Trail)

2) Nahuku Thurston Lava Tube (lunghezza: 0.6 km)

3) Kilauea Iki Trail (lunghezza: 4.8 km)

2) Nahuku Thurston Lava Tube (length: 0.6 km)
The simple Nahuku Thurston Lava Tube takes you to a forest of giant ferns and then, after crossing a bridge, into an illuminated tunnel where a rushing river of incandescent magma once flowed. However, the 2018 eruption caused serious damage and, in December 2019 the trail was still closed.

3) Kilauea Iki Trail (length: 4.8 km)
This almost 5 km loop trail starts at the Kilauea Iki Parking Lot and descends first into the rainforest and then directly to the crater (it takes 3 to 4 hours to hike the trail). We also found this trail close due to the 2018 eruption.

DOVE DORMIRE A HILO?

WHERE TO STAY IN HILO?
In Kona, an area full of resorts and nice accomodations, it is not difficult to choose where to stay. And for this you just not need us. In Hilo, on the other hand, things change. Everything is much cheaper, but there are no large infrastructures, no resorts on the beach ... in short, Hilo is the place for who are looking for peace and wants to "live as a Hawaiian". And nothing beats Keeau Place (http://keaauplace.com/), tucked away in the small but pleasant Keeau, 10 miles south of Hilo. Each of the two air-conditioned studios offers privacy and cleanliness. Equipped with all the conveniences of home and with extras like your own private hot tub, you will find that it is truly possible to enjoy the Big Island without busting your budget.
