50 shades of... Marrakech (day 1)

Cinquanta sfumature di Marrakech. Già, perchè se c'è un luogo al mondo che cambia aspetto con il passare delle ore è proprio la città marocchina, che abbiamo scelto come meta per un velocissimo week end (partenza alle 12 di venerdì, rientro la domenica all'alba: 70 euro la tariffa aerea, andata con Ryanair e ritorno con easyjet) spinti dai tanti commenti positivi ricevuti dai nostri amici in merito alla loro esperienza in terra africana.

Fifty shades of... Marrakech. Yes, because the Moroccoan city changes its face during the day and that's why we have chosen Marrakech as a destination for a quick weekend trip (departure at 12pm on Friday, returning on Sunday at dawn: 70 euros the flight, Ryanair/Easyjet) following many positive friend's reviews about their experience in Africa.

E' la prima volta per noi in Africa, un'Africa se vogliamo molto medio-orientale, ma anche europea, in una città che è ormai tappa ambita dai turisti di tutto il mondo (abbiamo trovato francesi, spagnoli, tedeschi, olandesi e inglesi e americani su tutti) per via di quel fascino che indubbiamente Marrakech possiede.

It's our first time in Africa, a kind of Africa with many european aspects but even with many aspects of Middle East of course. Marrakech has become a popular destination for tourists from all over the world (we found people from France, Spain, Germany, Netherlands and America): the reason is its charm...

All'aereoporto ci fanno compagnia i 40 gradi che sostanzialmente non ci abbandoneranno più e la navetta che ci porterà nella Riad in cui alloggeremo. Abbiamo scelto l'opzione romantica e se vogliamo più vera (ed economicissima) e di cui parleremo in fondo al post nella descrizione dell'hotel ed il benvenuto è calorosissimo: biscotti al sesamo ed ovviamente il thè alla menta, il favoloso thè alla menta di Marrakech.

We immediately find out that it's very hot (40 degrees): at the airport there is a shuttle that will take us to the Riad where we are going to stay at. We have chosen the romantic and more real option (and even cheaper) which will be discussed in the end of this post during the description of the hotel. The welcome is very warm: biscuits with sesame and of course the mint tea, the fabulous mint tea.

Ovviamente senza l'aiuto di uno dei proprietari che ci attendeva all'entrata della città vecchia non l'avremmo mai trovato. Ed è proprio il fatto che è sostanzialmente impossibile non perdersi (e le indicazioni non sono mai chiare) uno degli aspetti che meno ci è piaciuto.

Obviously we wouldn't have found our Riad without the help of one of the owners who was waiting for us at the entrance of the old town. . And the fact that it's basically impossible not to get lost (and the signs are never clear) is one of the things we didn't appreciate.

Son le 16 e cominciamo la nostra avventura lungo le vie piccolissime della città vecchia, la Medina.

It's 4 pm: let's begin the adventure along the tiny streets of the old town, called Medina.

Anche qui, ovviamente è ancora il padrone di casa ad accompagnarci alla Medina per la prima volta.

It's still the landlord the person who takes us to the Medina for the first time. 

Per arrivarci attraversiamo uno dei tanti souk e l'impatto con queste minuscole "vie dello shopping locale" è abbastanza traumatico.

We cross one of the many souks to get there and the impact with these tiny "shopping streets" is quite traumatic.

Si è costantemente disturbati dai venditori e se sbagli strada sei sostanzialmente obbligato a chiedere ad uno dei tanti ragazzini di accompagnarti al punto di partenza in cambio di qualche spicciolo della moneta locale.

We are constantly disturbed by the sellers and if you miss the righ street you're forced to ask one of the many little guys to take you tback for few bucks (of the local currency).

Piazza Jemaa el Fna è il luogo simbolo di Marrakech. E' la piazza principale che non troverete mai uguale a seconda dell'orario in cui vi recate. Di giorno venditori di acqua e spremute d'arancia, incantatori di serpenti, donne che fanno tatuaggi all'henne, suonatori e persino cavadenti.

Jemaa el Fna is the symbolic place of Marrakech. It's the main square and you will never find it with the same face: during the day water and orange juice sellers, snake charmers, women who do henna tattoos, musicians and even tooth-puller.

Ed ovviamente bancarelle, caffetterie e ristoranti con vista. tutto è molto economico, basti pensare che la spesa più alta saranno gli 11 euro spesi per il ticket del "sightseeing bus" acquistati il giorno successivo...

There are obviously many stalls, cafes and restaurants with a beautiful view of the square. Everything is very cheap, considering the fact that the most expensive thing has been the sightseeing bus ticket (11 euros)  purchased the day after...

Non lontano dalla piazza c'è la moschea principale, il cui minareto è per legge l'edificio più grande della città. Ai non musulmani è vietato l'ingresso.

Not far from the square you'll see the main mosque, whose minaret is by law the largest building in the city. Entry is forbidden if you are not muslim.

Fa molto caldo e decidiamo di rinfrescarci nei bellissimi giardini proprio dietro la moschea. Il profumo dei fiori d'arancio e un po' di quiete dopo il caos della Medina sono quello che cercavamo...

It is very hot then we decide to freshen up ourselves in the beautiful gardens just around the mosque. The scent of orange blossom and a little bit of calm are what we were looking for ...

Ma non saremmo noi se non prendessimo la prima fregatura. Un simpatico signore si avvicina a noi offrendoci dei dolci: "gratis, gratis..mangiare". Gratis un corno, vuole 10 dirham (1 euro), ma noi abbiamo solo un pezzo da 100 dirham. "Ah, non da resto... come Fantozzi". 10 euro per due dolci, la stessa cifra che spenderemo per cenare.

The first swindle. A nice gentleman approaches us offering sweets: "It's free, it's free...my present for you". No it wasn't for free! They cost 10 dirham (1 euros)  but we have only pieces of 100 dirhams. He gets all the money and leave... 10 euros, the same amount we would have spent for dinner.

Lezione imparata, da quel momento non ascolteremo più alcun venditore. Inutile girarci intorno, abituati agli Stati Uniti o comunque molto legati agli usi e costumi occidentali, questo è un altro mondo e non sempre ci troviamo a nostro agio.

Lesson learned, we won't trust anyone into the Medina. So, let's say the truth: we are accustomed to the United States and very close to Western customs and traditions... this is a very different world and we sometimes don't feel very comfortable.

Il tramonto si avvicina, arrivano i venditori di cibo: cambiano i colori ma anche gli odori e le persone nella piazza.

It's sunset time: food vendors are coming: colors but also smells and people are different inside the square.

C'è proprio una fascia oraria, dalle 19 alle 20 circa, in cui i lavoratori del giorno lasciano spazio a quelli della notte. Alcune bancarelle dei souk chiudono, altre rimangono aperte.

There's a time slot, from 7pm  to about 8 pm, in which day-workers leave the Medina and night-workers come. Some of the souk stalls are closed, others remain open.

Non ce la sentiamo di cenare dai venditori di cibo, anche perchè la dissenteria per Marco è sempre dietro l'angolo.

We prefer not to eat at the food vendors stands, also beacause Marco has to pay attention to what he eats...

Preferiamo uno dei tanti ristorantini con vista e francamente ci è sembrato che, a parte 1-2 di lusso, gli altri si equivalgono. Si cena con 7-10 euro a testa..

We prefer one of the many overlooking restaurants and we defnitely think that, apart from 1 or 2 luxury restaurants, others are pretty much the same. You can easily dine with 7-10 euros.

Fortunatamente riusciamo a trovare un tavolino "con vista" e finalmente possiamo assaggiare il taijne, che altro non è che carne in umido (pollo in questo caso) servita in modi diversi (noi scegliamo verdure cotte e olive). L'ale, che ama la cucina orientale apprezza moltissimo.

Fortunately we find a table with a beatiful view of the Jemaa El Fna square and we can finally taste the taijne, which is meat stew (chicken in this case) served in different ways (we choose cooked vegetables and olives). Ale, who loves oriental cuisine, appreciates that.

Sotto di noi la piazza si anima e complice il venticello rinfrescante della sera rimaniamo più di un'ora ad ammirare i colori di Jemaa el Fna...

The square below us comes alive and the refreshing breeze of the evening gives us beautiful sensations: we can just admire the colors of Jemaa el Fna ...

RIAD YES, RIAD NOT?
Scelta facile perchè legata al vostro modo di intendere il viaggio. Da una parte il fascino di un luogo, le Riad, in cui vivi davvero un'esperienza unica.

An easy choice because strictly connected to the way you travel. On the first hand the charm of a place, the Riad, where you live a unique experience...

Le location sono quasi sempre splendide e ti sembra davvero di essere in una casa "arabian style" mentre bevi un thè parlando con gli altri ospiti o con i proprietari sotto il cielo stellato di Marrakech.

The locations are often very beautiful and you really seem to be at home, in a arabian home, while drinking a cup of tea talking with the other guests or with the owners under the starry sky of Marrakech.

Posizionate quasi tutte nella Medina comportano ovviamente anche degli svantaggi: in primis che sono sostanzialmente impossibili da trovare, e poi che gli altoparlanti delle varie moschee che proiettano preghiere anche durante la notte (non sappiamo se sia così sempre o a causa del Ramadan) non è il massimo. Fuori dalla Medina ovviamente troverete le grandi catene e gli hotel di lusso nelle oasi dei numerosissimi campi da golf. Tornassimo a Marrakech non avremmo dubbi: il rapporto qualità/prezzo ci porterà sempre nelle Riad ma se cercate il comfort totale e la tranquillità alcune di esse potrebbero non fare per voi...

Almost every Riad are located into the Medina and of course there are also some disadvantages: firstly that Riad are not easy to find  and then the speakers of various mosques into the Medina launch some prayers even at night (we don't know if that happens just during Ramadan or not). Outside the Medina you will find the big hotel chains and luxury hotels in the oases of the many golf courses. No doubt for us: for quality, prices and atmosphere the Riad win, but if you are looking for a total comfort and tranquility some of the couldn't be the righe place for you.

50 shades of... Marrakech (day 2)

Dopo aver preso confidenza con la caotica Marrakech siamo pronti ad esplorarla. Il day 2, l'unico vero giorno che abbiamo a disposizione per la visita della città, vogliamo che sia produttivo anche se, complice un orientamento non facile all'interno della Medina, non sappiamo ancora cosa aspettarci...

We are finally ready to explore the chaotic Marrakech. It's day 2, the only and last day in the city and we want to do a lot of things even if we know that orientation is not easy inside the Medina. We do not know what to expect ...

Ad aspettarci, a dir la verità, c'è una splendida colazione all'interno della Riad: il solito immancabile thè alla menta, crépes, pane, yogurt, burro e diverse marmellate fatte in casa. L'atmosfera è molto araba, molto "cerimonia del thè".

To be honest, a wonderful breakfast is waiting for us at the Riad: the usual inevitable mint tea, pancakes, bread, yogurt, butter and various homemade jams. The atmosphere is very Arab, very "tea ceremony".

La visita della città comincia con il luogo più comodo da raggiungere perchè vicinissimo alla nostra Riad. Fortunatamente non abbiamo bisogno di usare alcuna cartina, la "Medersa Ben Youssef" è davvero comoda da raggiungere dalla nostra posizione.

The city tour begins with the most convenient place to reach because very close to our Riad. Fortunately there's no need to use any map, the "Medersa Ben Youssef" is really easy to reach from where we are.

Parliamo ovviamente dell'antica scuola coranica, uno degli edifici sicuramente più famosi di Marrakech (1565).

We are talking about of  the ancient Koranic school, surely one of the most famous buildings in Marrakech (1565).

Riusciamo a visitare con la solita manciata di dirham (poco più di un euro) le 130 stanze dove dormivano gli alunni e la corte al centro.

With a handful of dirhan (just more than a euro) we can visit all the 130 rooms where students used to sleep and the court at the center.

Ad una decina di metri dalla Medersa Ben Youssef c'è anche il museo di Marrakech ma preferiamo passare oltre: ci addentriamo nei mai troppo graditi "souk", dove è forte l'influenza araba, berbera e dell'Africa nera, alla ricerca del secondo posto da visitare, il Palazzo della Bahia...

About few meters far from the Medersa Ben Youssef there is alsoa museum, the museum of Marrakech, but we prefer to pass over: we venture into never too welcome "souks", where there is a strong Arab and berber influence, looking for the second place to visit: the Bahia Palace ...

...un palazzo raffinato costruito alla fine del 1800 da un "gran visir" che non badò a spese. Entriamo in un souk convinti (dopo un lungo consulto della mappa di Marrakech) di essere nella viuzza giusta.

...An elegant palace built in the late 1800s by a "grand vizier". We are pretty sure (after a long consultation of the map of Marrakech) to be in the right souk...

No, non la prendiamo benissimo. Già alle 9 siamo alla ricerca affannosa, sotto il caldo già cocente, di un appiglio per scovare un luogo che vorremmo visitare.

We are not so happy about that. It's 9am and we are already looking for something that we'll never find. And it's very hot...

Siamo sfiduciati quando davanti a noi, poco lontano dalla piazza Jemaa El Fna appare il pulman rosso del seightseeing. Lo rincorriamo stile Usain Bolt ed alla prima fermata saliamo.

We are a little bit disappointed. In that moment, just few meters far from Jemaa El Fna, the seightseeing red bus appears in front of us. We can't miss it.

Il prezzo è conveniente (11 euro, che sarà la spesa più alta della due giorni), c'è anche la guida audio in italiano e soprattutto ci dà la possibilità di visitare anche la città nuova. Direi che s'ha da fare... La linea rossa percorre le tappe principali della Marrakech nuova e vecchia, quella verde si spinge sino ai bellissimi jardins Majorelle, che purtroppo non faremo in tempo a visitare.

Price is very convenient (11 euros):  there is also the audio guide in Italian and above all it gives us the opportunity to visit the new town. The red line runs through the main stages of Marrakech new and old town, the green one goes up to the beautiful Jardins Majorelle, which unfortunately couldn't visit (lack of time)

Percorriamo il primo giro senza scendere dal bus (50 minuti circa), cercando di capire quali siano i luoghi più belli da visitare. Tanto è araba la città vecchia, quanto ci sembra con forte influenza europea e sicuramente più vivibile la città nuova. Non ci spingeremo fino a La Palmeraie, caratterizzata da campi da golf, residenze e hotel di lusso, ma quel senso di "tranquillità" è già tangibile.

For the entire first lap we don't get off the bus (50 minutes), trying to figure out what are the best places to visit. The old city is very arab, the new one has strong European influence and definitely is more livable. We won't go to La Palmeraie (golf courses, luxury hotels and residences) because we don't have enough time.

Alla conclusione del giro, poco prima della piazza Jemaa El Fna, scendiamo per visitare le tombe sadiane, risalenti a più di 300 anni fa e scoperte solamente nel 1920.

At the end of the tour, just before the Jemaa El Fna, we visit the saadians tombs, also called "necropolis of Marrakech", built by saadian sovereign.

Si tratta di 66 tombe reali risalenti ad un'antica dinastia marocchina.

There are 66 royal tombs coming from the 17th century.

Uno stretto cunicolo ci porta all'interno, tra un bel giardinetto, qualche gatto randagio ed anche delle cicogne che fanno compagnia ai turisti. Una curiosità: i sepolcri sono di marmo di Carrara.

La seconda tappa è l'Hotel de Ville con il contiguo bellissimo "Cyber Park - Arsat Moulay Abdessalam", otto ettari di "verde" risalenti al 18esimo secondo.

The second stage is "Hotel de Ville" with the beautiful Cyber Park - Arsat Moulay Abdessalam". The ancient garden is very pleasant for a walk in calm in the shade of eucalyptus trees, extended on eight hectares and which was created in the 18th century.

E' mezzogiorno ed il termometro segna 40 gradi: il fresco degli alberi di eucalipto sono una manna dal cielo...

It's noon and the thermometer says 40 degrees: the shade of eucalyptus trees are a godsend ...

Potremmo riprendere il pulman, ma come sempre commettiamo l'errore di credere che le distanze siano vicino nonostante le avessimo già percorse sul bus. A piedi, sotto il sole cocente, percorriamo l'intera via via Mohamed V sino a raggiungere Piazza 16 novembre. Negozi di alta moda, starbucks, centri commerciali, ristoranti e cafès: questa è la Marrakech se vogliamo "europea".

Do we take the bus again? No, of course not. As always we make the mistake of believing that the distances are close despite we had already traveled these roads on the bus. A walk in the hot sun along the entire street until we get to Avenue Mohamed V Square till square November 16. Luxurious shops, starbucks, shopping centers,malls, restaurants and cafés, this is the "European" Marrakech...

Spendiamo una buona oretta da starbucks prima di riprendere il bus e proseguire l'esplorazione di Marrakech.

We spend a good hour at Starbucks before taking the bus again and continue the exploration of Marrakech.

La stazione e soprattutto il Théatre Royal hanno molto fascino: Lungo la via Mohamed VI, la più lussuosa probabilmente dell'intera città, il teatro rappresenta la più classica delle ciliegine sulla torta.
L'opera, ispirata all'antica Italia è stata progettata dall'architetto Charles Bacarra.

The station and especially the theatre has to be visited. The Royal Theatre is located at the beginning of the most prestigious thorougfare in the city: Avenue Mohamed VI. An impressive building, designed by Carles Bacarra and inspired by Ancient Italy.

Non molto lontano ci sono altri due quartieri decisamente interessanti e lussuosi: l'Hivernage e Sofitel: chi cerca "enternainment" e quindi divertimento, casinos e locali viene qui (Sofitel): soprattutto le celebrità, molte delle quali residenti all'interno di quest'area (Hivernage) nel verde e nel lusso di un quartiere bellissimo, il più esclusivo insieme a Pameraie.

Not far from the theatre there two interesting and luxurios neighborhoods: Hivernage and Sofitel. People looking for fun and enternainment come to Sofitel where they can find casinos, trendy restaurants, pubs, cabaret and nightclub. Many celebrities live here captured by the charm of the city. The neighborhood of Hivernage is a beautiful area of greenery and calm unfolding in proximity to its ochre and red walls. Together with Palmeraie it is today the most expensive and most appreciated residential area of Marrakech.

Concluso il secondo giro sul "red bus" torniamo in piazza Jemaa el Fna per la cena. Arrosticini per Marco, il solito tajin per l'Ale.

At the end of the tour it's time to come back to Jemaa El Fna square for dinner. Meat and Tajin of course.

Oggi l'atmosfera è più rilassata e finalmente possiamo fare un po' di shopping. Riusciamo clamorosamente a fermarci in una delle tante bancarelle sulla piazza e compriamo una lampada berbera.

The atmosphere is more relaxed today so we can finally do some shopping. We can even stop at one of the many stalls on the square and buy a lamp made by berbers.

La mattina successiva ci dovremo svegliare presto (5 am) per rientrare in Italia e sorseggiando il solito thè alla menta sotto il cielo stellato è tempo di bilanci. E tutto sommato, proprio per la sua particolarità, Marrakech è una di quelle città che, almeno una volta nella vita, vanno visitate.

The next morning we will have to wake up early (5 am) for the coming back to Italy then it's time to think about our experience in Morocco sipping the usual mint tea under the stars. And all in all, because of its peculiarities, Marrakech is one of those cities that, at least once in your life, has to be visited.
