XMAS time in Florida (day 1-2, from Miami to Orlando)

ORLANDO - KENNEDY SPACE CENTER - NAPLES - EVERGLADES - KEY WEST - MIAMI

In Italy we usually use to say "Christmas with your parents, Easter with who you want!". But for us both Christmas and Easter are good occasions fot travelling through the world. Also for our Christmas trip we decided to go back to our beloved USA: Florida for the second time and with a little bit of more experience after our visit in 2012. Before starting our tale we want to give you some important advices for someone of you who is interested in having a trip like ours. We've booked the flight in May (550 € each) and avoiding new year eve, otherwise prices would have been higher! We payed the rental of our car 276€ for 12 days. So the minimum budget for this trip for 13 days (from the 16th to 29th december) in our opinion is about 1100€ each (flight, car rental, hotels, parks etc included, not dining in restaurants): remain below this amount is pretty much difficult. Do worse of course, as always, is easy and it depends on people. Yes, we know, let's go. How is the weather in Florida at Christmas time? During our thirteen days we have learned that Orlando is weird: from the swimwear to sweatshirt and from 12 to 25 degrees... depending on the time of day! Orlando is definitely less hot, in the gulf is summer, but the sea-water is really cold, while in Key West you'll get the perfect temperature (it's hot already at 8 am and 25 degrees all day long: yes, you can have a bath into the sea) and Miami is in the middle between the Gulf and Key West but much more humid. If it's sunny it's summer, and the water is similar to our Adriatic sea temperature. Basically this is the best time to visit the Florida ...

17 DICEMBRE: FROM MIAMI TO ORLANDO (371km)

As we arrived late on day 16 in Miami and had to pick up the car at Alamo, we have chosen to sleep close to the airport. The costs here are reduced and the quality is not so bad. Our room even overlooks a golf course! Thinking about our experience, we could have slept here during our stay in Miami in the last days of our vacation

Early in the morning of the 17th, however, we are already on track, ready to drive along the 400km that separate us from Orlando.

Obviously after giving welcome to our car ...

American highways, as always, help us by reporting, exit after exit, what we could find for any need (restaurants, bar, gas and hotels) and, after an espresso at Dunkin Donuts we are ready drive to Orlando passing through all the small lakes that characterize Florida.

Florida is the only US state in which you pay the toll on the highway. You do not have to worry because the rental car agency will then charge the amount without any need to buy a ticket for each leg along it. You just have to pay attention to pass under the "sun pass" lane and not under the the ticket. We once went wrong ...
Orlando is not a city like any other, but you probably already know this. And if it is up to us we would transfer immediately there.

Hotels here are very cheap and we take advantage: the view from the room is a reminder that if you are in Orlando the reasons can only be two: Disney and the theme parks.

There will be a time for that, now it's time to enjoy the pool.

It is almost evening and after a quick detour at the Orlando Premium Outlets, we close our first day in Florida with "our" Tgi Friday's: it's about fifty meters far from our hotel, wow! Because our american slogan is "yes, fruit for lunch,, but the choice on where and how to dine in the evening is IMPORTANT, very very important".

Well, who goes into the US has to dine at least once at TGI with a Jack Daniels' steak and a cheesecake ...

non è nostro amico...

otherwise he ain't a friend of us.

XMAS in Florida (day 3, Kennedy Space Center)

18 dicembre.

December the 18th. We have been undecided until the last minute, because of the cost ($ 50), and because we are not so much interested in these kind of things, but in the end we could not avoid it: the third day is dedicated to the Kennedy Space Center, the structure for the launch of NASA spacecraft.

We are on the Florida's Atlantic coast, substantially in the middle, at Merritt Island. Set the "tom tom", we are ready tro drive along the ninety kilometers between Orlando and Cape Canaveral, until we reach the sea. It means that we are close to the Merritt island, connected to the mainland by a bridge.

L'Ale ride, Marco no. Anzi.

And as soon as we are on the bridge on the car's display appears that the gasoline is almost finished. In entire Marco's life this has never happened! Ale laughs, Marco is in "panic mode". Obviously there are no gas stations near the Kennedy Space Center and Marco will spend the entire day (the visit of the Ksc lasts about 4 hours) thinking about the car!). We finally refuel when we still have 17miles left...

Let's talk about Kennedy Space Center. We thought it was one of those places for people who really love these kind of things, but we were wrong.

The visit has been very interesting and, even without purchasing additional tickets that would have allowed us to live even closer the entire NASA, it gave us a super experience.

For those who want to visit the KSC deeply we suggest to consult this link, certainly more detailed and prepared by real enthusiasts (Kennedy Space Center, italian language) people. For those who  just are like us we can say that the Kennedy Space Center is a mix between an amusement park and a real visit to a "sacred" place.

The "theme park" park is, just as an example, related to the possibility of becoming astronauts for about ten minutes and simulate the launch of a shuttle (very funny) or maybe be a driver of a Shuttle and try to land in the right place in the right time (and it's not easy, believe us).

The serious part of the story is about admiring reproductions of the shuttle, the spacecraft passed into disuse and much more.

What is the beautiful moment? When you get the bus (included in the ticket price) and live the best hour and half of the day.

The driver, very friendly, will be even your guide and take you in the heart of Nasa.

We are even "lucky" because we can see the treadmill launch from where rockets and shuttles are launched into the space; the next day there would have been the last launch of 2014.

Being a natural protected area, if you are lucky you can see a lot of wildlife (gators and much more...).

You fly a little bit with fantasy, but it is normal: it is probably one of  the most fascinating places of the entire United States, and if you are in Florida you canìt miss it. After all, too many kinds answer "i'll be an astronaut" when you ask them "what do you want to be? This coud be the only chance to be, at least for a day, an astronaut.

Let's come back on"earth", there is a refuel that is waiting for us ... And after calmed down Marco and left the park (it's 3 pm in the afternoon), we can return to the Orlando Premium Outlets to complete our shopping and visit the nearby Artegon Marketplace, a shopping center made of local stalls (just opened), where Marco tries what "degree of hotness 10" means in the special ranking. Better avoid details, but we assured that it is an experience Marco will not do again very soon ...

We would like to dine at Toby Keith I love this bar (Marco is a super fan of the famous country singer), but the restaurant is going to open in few days: never mind, let's try Fuddruckers (you can also find it in Italy) that will not let us down, partly because you personally decide the toppings of your sandwich.

We would even like to visit downtown but we are too tired. Obviously, for those are not interested in shopping, just stay on International Drive and you'll find everything you need: it doesn't matter if you are in Orlando or in the nearby Kissimmee. The weather? As we said, in December the "onion" is a must. With average conditions, you should wear sweatshirt until 10 am and after 17 pm, shirt in the middle of the day.

XMAS in Florida (day 4, Universal Studios)

It 's time for Ale to get her birthday gift. Very difficult decision... we did Disney World Magic in  Paris, so we think it's better if visit the Universal Studios, brother of the Island of Adventure park where we have been two years before.

And then in the Village Studios there is also Bubba Gump, the second part of Ale's birthday gif. So we have to choose the Universal studios!

We purchase the tickets directly at the park. You can even purchase them in almost every hotels in Orlando, but they are much more expensive. The best way is to book them on the internet or directly at the ticket office in the park. If you purchase the ticket in the hotel you will pay at least 15 dollars more per ticket.

We can't wait to visit  the village of the Simpsons, Springfield, and the new Minions attraction, the characters Ale loves!

We know that Universal Studios is a theme park dedicated to the movies, but we do not see many movies (no more than 2-3 per year), we are " TV series animals"

We expect, as happened two years before, to find attractions like roller coaster thrills or something like this, actually there is just "one and a half" coaster. Ale does alone the first one. You can even choose the music to be heard in the background during the run... the second one is "the mummy coaster", very very funny.

It's a little bit disappointing. There are just 3D simulations or movie set. For example Harry Potter or Transformers... the only difference is the scenery. We haven't seen those movies (and we save you what we think about them, but you're probably guessing ...) and understand that the park is not made for us, except for Springfield, Shrek and Despicable me: all cartoons! Well,, maybe Disneyworld and Epcot would have been better!

Despite everything, however, has been a beautiful day, full of emotions, We did the Mummy even five times, because the advantage is that all visitors are involved in the movies and attractions are almost always without a long queue.

Siamo affamati e Bubba Gump ci aspetta!

We are hungry and Bubba Gump awaits us! As always the choice of this restaurant is not wrong! We enjoy a dish of lobster and one with strange kind of fish and the garlic bread as an accompaniment to the dishes. Everything for 40 dollars.

For the first time we don't have to wait for half an hour to get the table!

Our eyes are saying "please, let's go to sleep". Leaving Bubba we come back to the hotel, where, however, we note that the expiration date of our parking is just this day! Firstly we think it is a mistake made by the receptionist and then we are ready to tell them about this... but we have a thousand of doubts ... until we catch the hotel's wifi. Ale immediately opens the application of hotels.com, checks and exclaims: "Ups! We had to check out this morning." Yes, this time we have done a disaster.

Cercando di mantenere la calma Marco in reception e dice: "I think we've made a big.."

We guess all our clothes scattered around the hotel and, to be honest, we are not so happy about what we have just done. Marco tries to be calm and at the desk says: "I think we've made a big ..", but the receptionist doesn't allow him to finish. "oh, you are those who have not checked out! Do not worry, the room is free, you can stay here tonight, we will charge the cost of the room for one more night".
We are embarassed and don't know if smile or be upset and even now we are not able to understand why we both forget to leave the hotel that morning. The night in Tampa is skipped (but obviously it has been paid) and tomorrow the stage will be much longer. This is the magic of Orlando...

p.s. the truth is that sometimes we are too foolish

XMAS in Florida (day 5, from Orlando to Naples)

After what happened the day before with the check out, a lot of things have been changed. Our original plan was to sleep in Tampa, visit the city (and the bay area) and especially all the beautiful beaches along the Gulf coast. For example Clearwater (the name of the town says everything about the colour of the water), Siesta Key, Fort de Soto, Sanibel and Captiva Island. The last two very close to our final destination, Naples. This part of Florida is definitely better than Miami area...

We are forced to reset our plan. Something is going to change, but not everything. Infact we decide to move close to the coast, a choice that force us to drive for more hours but even allow us to breathe the air of one of the most interesting areas of the entire Florida. It's 10 in the morning and we are already in Tampa. Stopping here is useless...

(the Sunshine Skyway Bridge)

We continue directly to St Petersburg and to the bay along (of course) the magnificent Sunshine Skyway Bridge on Highway 19 (called one of the ten most beautiful bridges in the world) which connects St Petersburg with Bradenton.

(the bridge on the background)

Actually, before driving along the bridge, by mistake we stop in one of the most luxurious neighborhood in the Pinellas County, a few steps from the bridge and then facing the sea.

It's perfect for a quick stop and for the first approach with the sea.

Since we are on the gulf, we also stop at Bradenton (another very, very rich town) hoping to visit the IMG Bollettieri Academy (we are tennis fan), but the guardian at the gate says "just if you have an appointment".

After a quick lunch at subway we get back on track. There are still two hundred kilometers to reach Bonita Springs, a town about ten miles north of Naples that for two nights (this time we check three times to not be wrong) is going to be our "home". Hotels in this area are not as cheap as in Orlando, but in Bonita Springs are much cheaper than in Naples. And then spend the night at La Quinta is a guarantee of quality at a reasonable price.

It's already late afternoon, then we decide to visit the town of Naples (two years ago we missed it). Naples means rich people, sometimes means retired people with a lot of money, means peaceful, means low rithm, it also means that if you are dressing tracksuit and a shirt "keep calm and love US" like us... well they look at you in a weird way.

(the "Mercato" - Naples)

We get along with this, because it's a town we particularly like. We have just one regret. We have missed the sunset with the dolphins, that it's really a must when you are on the gulf coast. Maybe next time...

We stop at the "mercato" and find a market that leave us without words. Its name is Whole Foods and you can find everything there. Even take-away food from around the world, a small bar and also the chance to go shopping with a glass of wine in your hand. We are as surprised as we forget to take pictures. After all, if you find this sentence on the wall ("there is no love sincerer than the love of food" means that well, you're in the right place.

We would have stayed there for hours, but it's 8 pm and we are really hungry. The "mercato" is nothing more than another luxury street with restaurants and... Ferrari parked closed to them. We choose the cheapest restaurant and it's not a bad choice.

The fuit-salad which ale gets is probably one of the best salad she has ever eaten. Marco gives a chance to the "famous" Naples-flatbread, a sort of pizza. Obviously Marco decides that his flatbread will be stuffed with more than ten ingredients: sausage, different potatoes, cheese, pepperoni, some other hot sauces, olives and maybe at least 3-4 other things.

Marco direte voi no?

We would also like to go for a walk along the 5t avenue, but as soon as we find a parking lot, something is stopping us. What? the "bathroom call". Are you thinking about Marco because of what he has just eaten? No, no, no, it's Ale with her famous "number one". The only public restroom we find is closed, so it's better if we get back to the hotel.
