New York City, Cape Cod and... "The Real America" (day 1)

NEW YORK - CAPE COD - CHEYENNE - MOUNT RUSHMORE - BADLANDS - CODY - YELLOWSTONE - SALT LAKE CITY - MOAB - DENVER

Altro giro, altro viaggio a stelle e strisce.

Another day, another trip into United States. This time, however, we organize a quite expensive at the physical level trip, not so much in the first days spent in New York and in "our" Cape Cod, but in during the 13 days trip into the "Real America". Booked as always in advance the flight (975 euros including a domestic flight, Boston-Denver) and rented the car at Alamo(400 Euros for 13 days from Denver to Denver, avoiding the high cost of the "drop-off ") we decided to split the 21 days in USA: three days in New York City, where we meet our friend Alex with her boyfriend Paul, 5 in Cape Cod (hosted by the wonderful Darzenta's family) and 13 days in Colorado, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Utah.

Regarding New York, our idea is to live this city differently than we did during our first trip in the summer of 2012. We would like to do the thing we didn't do that summer and visit what the "big apple" offers, not only Manhattan. We land in the middle of the afternoon at the JFK airport and after half an hour on the train, we are at the hotel. We are really tired but the recepcionist offers us a brownies. That is enough, we are ready to go!

The first stage is the Rockfeller Center (top of the rock observation desk, 29 dollars). We prefer it instead of the Empire State Building only because at the top you can also see Central Park. We buy the ticket and after the security controls we can finally take the elevator.

Not only Manhattan, from here you can actually see the entire city of New York: Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx...  and beyond the Hudson, also the state of New Jersey.

(Manhattan)

The most fascinating is certainly the view of Central Park from the top of the building.

After the visit we decide to walk along the 5th Avenue: the next stage is Shake Shack. We stop at the Nba Store...

arriviamo a Madison Square Park: Shake Shack ci attende...

and finally we arrive at Madison Square Park: Shake Shack is waiting for us...

We have to wait half an hour, but then... one of the best burger in the world.

STATO: New York

New York City, Cape Cod and... "The Real America" (day 2, prima parte)

Taking advantage of the jat lag we are on track really early (at 7:30) and that is perfect, because we would like to visit the famous Carlo's Bakery, home of Buddy (the Cake Boss) and his family, famous all around the world for his amazing cakes, The man who put on maps the town of Hoboken, New Jersey.

Buddy..." rispondiamo timidamente...

Well, it's another state, but Hoboken is really easy to reach. We head to World Trade Center looking for the famous PATH, the railway line that allow people to get to Carlo's Bakery. We ask an attendant where we could buy tickets and fortunately he speaks also italian, saving us time and effort. He explains that with $ 5 (2.50 per ride) we can easily reach Hoboken. "But why are you going to Hoboken?. Don't tell me you're going to Buddy!" he says to us, probably expecting to receive always the same answer. "Well, yeah ... Buddy ..." we say...

We arrive in Hoboken and happily surprised by the city: pretty, clean and with Manhattan in the background. Of course, Italy has an important role here, as in all New Jersey, the home of Italians in America. Carlo's Bakery is easily to find and, thanks to the jet lag, we also avoid the "famous" queue.

Buddy is not in the shop, but as soon the shop assistant discovers that we are Italian, start to threat us like "brothers", even tryng to speak italian. There are a lot of desserts, Ale decides to take a redvelvet cupcake, Marco takes a croissant. We had doubts on the quality of the "product Buddy", we thought it was very commercial... But actually it's really really really yummy.

We leave the shop and there are a lot of  hurdles and at least fifty people outside it. Before leaving New Jersey we reach the Hudson River for a few photos with the skyline of Manhattan in the background.

The second stage is definitely one of the most fascinating neighbors of New York City, Brooklyn (as we said our idea was to see the real New York, not only Manhattan). Until the last minute we didn't know where to go, then Marco proposed Coney Island (he is a basketball fan...). It takes more than forty minutes by subway from Manhattan ...

Basketball, the "Warriors", hot-dog, one of the most recognized entertainment parks in the world, the sea, the beach. Well, in Coney Island you there are a lot of things to do. Who welcomes us is Nathan's, one of the largest fast food chains but also the inventor of the hot dog back in 1916. The first, historical, Nathan's appears in front of us as soon as we arrive in Coney Island.

Siamo o no negli Stati Uniti?

Nathan's organizes every july one of the most famous races in America, the hot dog race, also broadcasted on television. Are we or not into the United States?

(continua...)

But Coney Island is also and especially its famous Luna Park, one of the oldest, restored a few years ago and now again a popular destination for many people. And when there is a luna park in the middle, Ale's best (or worst, depending on your point of view) always comes out... (to be continued ...)

New York City, Cape Cod and... "The Real America" (day 2, seconda parte)

Coney Island, Brooklyn.

Coney Island, Brooklyn. Among the many interesting areas of New York City we chose Coney, the best place in Brooklyn if you have only one day to spend in Brooklyn. A walk on the crowded boardwalk ...

trying to forget a huge regret we haven't brought with us the swimsuit ...

and at noon, when the Luna Park opens, is finally "Ale time".

Well, if you're in Coney Island you are forced to do at least one of the rides of the historic Luna Park,

We struggle to understand how the purchase of tickets works for all the attractions, but a single ride costs $ 10. Marco decides to drive karts, causing a "safety car" ...

L'ale tuttavia riuscirà ancora a far meglio.

Ale, however, is doing better. She does the terrifying Thunderbolt.

This video tells already everything about this rollercoaster (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESU9vWCLZM0), that replaced  the old Thunderbolt that worked from 1925 to 1982.

A pranzo ovviamente assaggiamo l'ottimo hot dog di Nathan's...

At lunch we taste of course the amazing Nathan's Hot dog...

... and we digest it immediately. How? We missed the subway stop and we are forced to walk for 3 miles, trying to reach "L'Albero dei Gelati".

Shake Shack!

After a good espresso we reach the Barclays Center, the home of the Brooklyn Nets, and from there we take the subway that take us back to Manhattan. For the second night in a row ... Shake Shack!

And while we are eating a super burger, Marco sees in the crowd Mario Ancic, a former tennis player who now lives and works in New York. The perfect end of the second day in the Big Apple.

New York City, Cape Cod and... "The Real America" (day 3-4)

Day 3, the last in the Big Apple. Today is the "Musical day" (we are so excited) at Broadway, thanks to our wonderful friend Alex and his boyfriend Paul. They joined us in New York and gave us an evening that we will hardly forget, so we decided not to do Highline Park and go to the East River. Why? Because we discovered that there is a cable car that connects Manhattan with the "small" Roosevelt Island, an island located in the middle of the East River, not far from Queens.

For those who have the Metrocard (the metro ticket) the ride is free. We take the opportunity and within a little less than five minutes we are at Roosevelt Island.

Well, the funny part is the tramway... because Roosevelt Island is not so nice except a nice view of Manhattan.

Just a coffee and then we are ready to come back to Manhattan.

Leaving Roosevelt Island we head towards World Trade Center, where the atmosphere is always different. In 2012, when we visited for the first time the Big Apple, the 9/11 Memorial was not ready yet. Now here we are The two fountains that replaced the twin towers, with the names of all the dead people. are beautiful and so impressive...

but it's the silence that reigns in a city where the noise is everywhere.

Thanks to Alex and Paul ee visit the 9/11 museum which, of course, leaves without words. Movies, testimonials, remains of the towers or of the fire truck ... throughout the day you are not able to take away the museum from your mind. We usually do thousands of photos, for this time we forget that we have the camera ...

Just the thought of what we are going to see tonight takes away a bit of sadness. At 8pm we head to Times Square...

E' il "The Lion King Day".

Today is "The Lyon King Day". We are going to watch a Broadway's musica!! Since we were young and saw on tv "The Nanny" and "Mr. Sheffield"we have been wondering... "how are this musical?". Now we have the answer ...

Grazie Alex e Paul.

The very famous cartoon is represented as its best: costumes, set design, dialogues ... all is really beautiful. Thanks again Alex and Paul.

(Time Square vista dal teatro)
(Time square view from the theater)

The next day (day 4), is a transfer-day. From New York City to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, passing through the states of New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island (3 hours drive). But surprises are not finished yet. Before going to Cape Cod we stop in the beautiful town of Astoria (Queens, New York) for a brunch with Alex cousin and his girlfriend.

sabato 8 novembre 2014

New York City, Cape Cod and... "The real America" (day 5, 6 and 7)

We consider Cape Cod as home. Five days where we relax before starting the trips, the days where ... we are Americans. And being Americans on Cape Cod and throughout the area around Boston has no equal, one of those fifteen to twenty places in the world where it worth living.

Well, we are also lucky and thanks to Mark, Simona, Chuck and Janice (who hosted us this summer), Alex, Little Alex, Paul, Nick, Mike, Alex, John and Emily the five days in Cape Cod are always not only the best days of the trip, but even the best of the entire year.

We have already explained what to see and what to do in Boston and Cape Cod (Boston e Cape Cod) and we've already seen all the things this area offers. But people with italian-greek-american blood are always crazy and so... let's experience for the first time Halloween even if it's summer!

we wake up in the morning and find muffins freshly baked by the marvellous Janice (we have already submitted the application for the adoption ...)

grigliamo in compagnia...

Barbecue with all the friends...

Beviamo birra e.... Espresso Martini (grazie Chuck)

drink beer and... Espresso Martini (thank you Chuck)

Eat cupcakes at Cupcake Charlie's with John and Emily...

or visit an American military base with Paul. Obama landed here just few days after...

facciamo shopping nell'outlet di Wrentham. E qui parlano le immagini...

doing shopping at Wrentham Outlet, one of the best shopping place...

And, last but not least, we are so "capecodians" that our pictures are even on the newspaper!

An advice? If you are going to New York, you should rent a car, drive for 300km and spend four or five days in Boston and Cape Cop.
