Mini Tour in Baviera (part 1)

Every occasion is good for traveling, even and especially a game of Werder Bremen, the german team where Marco's brother (Luca) plays soccer. And what a game. Yes, because Bayern Monaco - Werder Bremen has also become an excuse for a mini tour (three days) in Bavaria (from friday the 25th to Sunday the 27th of april): a day and a half in its capital, Munich, and the last one divided between the concentration camp of Dachau and Neuschwanstein Castle ...

Once in Munich (Friday afternoon) after the checking into the hotel (not very cheap, at the level of Paris) we immediately went to downtown and, of course, to the markets (virtualienmarkt), our place.

Before dinner, however, a nice trip on the subway is waiting for us. We leave, infact, downtown and go to the hotel where Werder Bremen (and of course Luca as well) is staying. We all want to spend few minutes with him.

Let's go back to downtown for dinner. It's full of people and also full of typical restaurants. We know where we would like to go for dinner...

...to Hofbrauhaus, the famous pub where Hitler held one of his first speeches. We knew that there would be a chance to find the room full (even at 10pm), but we did not expect so full.

We are forced to leave the brewery and go in another pub near the Hard Rock Cafe. Obviously Schnitzel and weiss bier for everyone.

The day after is "game day" as american people say, but Munich has so much to offer... so we decide to spend the morning among the English Garten and downtown.

The English Garten is the green lung of the city, the second largest park in Europe (for example is larger than Central Park) and here you'll find everything: who is jogging, who is walking, who is riding a bike....

And ... yes, surfers as well. They are ready to take advantage of the lively waters that run through the park. But the most important attraction of the park is still the Pagoda: in the evening is full of people and becomes an outdoor pub (bier garten). The triangle munich-beer-young is proof ...

Time flies but luckily we can reach downtown in time. In Marienplatz, infact, at 11 am (and also at 12 am) on the beautiful Gothic facade of the Neues Rathaus the Glockenspiel, the clock-carrillon, begins his personal show. The bells are ringing and the statuettes begin to move...

Obviously the "pre-game" lunch unch" takes place at the markets. Of course is a sandwich with sausage and sauerkraut between tourists and fans already with their mind into the game (oh obviously together, we are not in Italy ...). So we are ready to head to the Allianz Arena...

Siamo al pomeriggio della giornata di sabato: "it's game time"...

It's saturday afternoon, it means that "it's game time" ...

Mini Tour in Baviera (part 2)

Altro mondo...

After half an hour by subway here we are at the amazing Allianz Arena. From toutside it looks like a kind of spaceship, inside is even better. But the best thing is that the fans are watching the match together. A different world ...

Bremen plays well during first half: at half time they lead 2-1, but then the class of Ribery and Robben helps Bayern to win the match. The soccer match at Allianz Arena is one of the three most fascinating sports experience ever: in our very own label there is also Wimbledon and Bulls-Heat at the United Center in Chicago. The icing is of course the presence of Luca in the field.

The next day (Sunday), on the way back home, we have scheduled two stops: the first at the concentration camp of Dachau, the second to Neuschwanstein Castle. Dachau was a pleasant (more or less ...) town about twenty miles north of Monaco, but it is quite obvious that you breathe a different air here. It's drizzling and cold, silence reigns inside and outside the camp. Obviously there is a surreal atmosphere that involves you from the car park (€ 3) until the entry (Free).

Passing through the gate and its sentence "ARBEIT MACHT FREI", work makes you free (free?), it seems to enter into another world, as if the clock flowed back up to bring you back to those years where millions of people were massacred. Immediately you are in front of a memorial:

At his side there is the entrance to the museum where some panels tell when and why Dachau was built until the day of his release (04/29/1945) by the American troops. Reading those panels shivers runs down your back. We are living those moments...

A strong pressure on the chest and you are losing your breath. We leave the museum and then try to breathe deeply, but despite those deep breaths, feeling of faintness is always strong.

Arriviamo nelle "celle", i "dormitori" dove i prigionieri venivano tenuti.
"quante persone sono state rinchiuse li dentro?"

We arrive in the "cells", the "dorms" where prisoners were kept. There are small posters that tell the testimonies of some survivors about how they were treated.
The other dorms have been removed, now you can only see open space ... "how many people were locked up in there?"

We see several monuments built in memory of the fallen in Dachau and the we arrive there, in the place which the Nazis called "showers".

Tremendo.

Tremendous. Even more silence in this place, made of rooms from which the prisoners never returned.

Just the idea of what was done is terrible, again that feeling of pressure on the chest and the explosion, flowing tears thinking about the screams of those helpless people

Outside there are about 10 ° C and it's drizzling, but we don't feel the cold. We walk towards the exit in a silence that is a mixture of respect and upheaval and at that time, crossing the gate, we start to breathe again... it's cold!

We come back to the car, the direction now is the Neuschwanstein Castle. There are a hundred kilometers to do but we remain silent all the way. We know that we are going in a wonderful place ... the landscapes that we are crossing are breathtaking and this helps us a little bit,  but the experience of Dachau has signed that day.

We arrive at Fussen and in the distance we can already see the castle that inspired the great Walt Disney, it really seems the fairy tales one. It's time for lunch and there is plenty of choice: there are many restaurants... After a Schnietzel we are ready to visit the castle ...

but unfortunately it is too late and we don't have much time...

We decide to do visit if quickly. We buy the tickets fot the bus that takes you to the castle (€ 2.80): we can admire it from a bridge with the promise to come back soon and dedicate a whole day to visit the castle.

* You can not fully describe the experience of Dachau, but we are sure that anyone who visits that place, then comes out a bit '"changed".
The pictures say everything...
