Two days in Zadar - The city center and Plitvice National Park (day 2: guide to the visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park)

Se siete amanti della natura concorderete allora che pochissimi luoghi al mondo possono eguagliare la maestosità e la bellezza del più grande e antico parco della Croazia, il Plitvice National Park (in croato Plitvička Jezera), un autentico gioiellino patrimonio dell'UNESCO incastonato tra le montagne che compongono la regione di Like e di Segna, a poco meno di due ore da Zara. Sedici splendidi laghi in successione, collegati tra loro da cascate più o meno grandi, grotte (solo alcune sono visitabili) e piccole passerelle che permettono al visitatore di entrare a contatto con le oltre 150 specie di uccelli, 50 di mammiferi e 321 di lepidotteri in un parco costruito su misura per il turista. 

If you are a nature lover, you will certainly agree that very few places in the world can match the majesty and beauty of Croatia's largest and oldest park, Plitvice National Park (in Croatian Plitvička Jezera), a genuine UNESCO World Heritage jewel nestled among the mountains that make up the Like and Senj region, less than two hours from Zadar. Sixteen beautiful lakes in succession, linked by larger and smaller waterfalls, caves (only a few can be visited) and small footbridges that allow the visitor to come into contact with more than 150 species of birds, 50 of mammals and 321 of lepidopterans in a park tailor-made for the tourist. 

E' vero, infatti che, se da una parte gli hikers più avidi avranno pane per i loro denti, dall'altra le passerelle ben tenute, le barche che attraversano il lago Kozjak (il più grande) e i diversi punti ristoro (i prezzi sono ovviamente molto alti!) fanno sì che questo parco naturale sia perfetto per chiunque. Esatto, anche per chi non ha troppa voglia di camminare come è tutto sommato giusto che sia visto il prezzo abbastanza elevato per visitarlo, 40 euro (aggiornato al 2024).

It is true, in fact, that while the most avid hikers will find their cup of tea there, the well-maintained boardwalks, the boats that cross Lake Kozjak (the largest), and the various refreshment stations (prices are obviously very high!) make this nature park perfect for anyone. That's right, even for those who are not willing to walk for some chilometers. The ticket price for the summer period is 40 euros (updated to 2024).

Ma cosa rende speciale questo sistema lacustre suddiviso in Laghi Superiori (Gornja) e Laghi Inferiori (Donja)? I due fiumi, il Fiume Bianco ed il Fiume Nero, che confluiscono nel fiume Korana. Le loro acque sono ricche di sali calcarei (in massima parte carbonato di calcio e carbonato di magnesio), provenienti dalla dissoluzione delle rocce carbonatiche costituenti la struttura geologica del sito. Tali sali creano, di fatto, degli strati di travertino che regalano al lago un blu degno dei più famosi laghi alpini. Anzi, a volte si tratta proprio di un clamoroso azzurro simile a quello del mare. 

But what makes this lake system divided into Upper Lakes (Gornja) and Lower Lakes (Donja) so special? The two rivers, the White River and the Black River, which flow into the Korana River. Their waters are rich in calcareous salts (mostly calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate), originating from the dissolution of carbonate rocks constituting the geological structure of the site. These salts actually create layers of travertine that give the lake a blue color worthy of the most famous alpine lakes. Indeed, sometimes it is precisely a resounding sea-like blue.

Se siete in vacanza a Zara, visitare Pltivice Lakes National Park sarà davvero molto semplice. Acquistate con largo anticipo il biglietto del parco (il rischio è quello del sold sout) così come il ticket per il bus che dalla stazione di Zara (partenza estiva ore 8.30, indirizzo: Autobusni kolodvor Zadar, Ul. Ante Starčevića 1, 23000, Zadar) vi porterà in meno di due ore all'ingresso 1, il principale, anche se non l'unico ingresso del parco. Per il ritorno potrete scegliere tra tre orari di disponibili che spaziano dalle ore 15 alle ore 17. 

HOW TO GET TO PLITVICE FROM ZADAR 

LITTLE TIPS FOR VISITING PLTIVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK

If you are on vacation in Zadar, visiting Pltivice Lakes National Park would be very easy indeed. Just buy the park ticket well in advance (there's a high risk of sold sout) especially during the summer months as well as the ticket for the bus that from Zadar station (summer departure 8:30 am, address: Autobusni kolodvor Zadar, Ul. Ante Starčevića 1, 23000, Zadar) that takes visitor to entrance 1 (the main, though not the only entrance to the park in less than two hours. For the return, you can choose from three available slot: from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. 

QUAL E' L'ENTRATA MIGLIORE PER VISITARE PLITVICE NATIONAL PARK

Come vi ho anticipato sono diverse (3) le entrate al Parco Nazionale di Plitvice: Ingresso 1, Ingresso 2 e l'ingresso ausiliario Flora. Le più popolari sono la 1 (o nord), dedicata principalmente ai laghi inferiori e la 2 (sud) per i laghi superiori. L'ingresso Flora Auxiliary si trova invece a pochi passi dal villaggio di Plitvica Selo. In inverno, da Novembre a Marzo, si può accedere al parco solo attraverso l'ingresso 1, poichè l'ingresso 2 ed il Flora sono entrambi chiusi. L'ingresso migliore? sicuramente l'1, che è anche il più popolare poichè si cammina in salita attraverso il parco avendo davanti sempre i laghi e le cascate. Dall'ingresso 2, invece, vi lascerete sempre alle spalle il panorama.

WHAT IS THE BEST ENTRANCE TO VISIT PLITVICE NATIONAL PARK

As I anticipated there are several (3) entrances to Plitvice National Park: Entrance 1, Entrance 2 and the auxiliary entrance Flora. The most popular are Entrance 1 (or north), dedicated mainly to the lower lakes and Entrance 2 (south) for the upper lakes. The Flora Auxiliary entrance, on the other hand, is a short walk from the village of Plitvica Selo. In winter, from November to March, the park can be accessed only through entrance 1, as entrance 2 and Flora are both closed. The best entrance? definitely entrance 1, which is also the most popular since you walk uphill through the park always having the lakes and waterfalls in front of you. From entrance 2, on the other hand, you will always leave the view behind.

COME VISITARE PLITVICE NATIONAL PARK - I DIVERSI PERCORSI

Nonostante il parco sia progettato su misura per rendere l'esperienza al turista il più semplice possibile, non è così semplice orientarsi al suo interno e soprattutto scegliere il miglior percorso possibile. Anche perchè ce ne sono davvero tanti e, a seconda del tempo che avrete a disposizione, sarà importante sceglie accuratamente quale seguire. La premessa, doverosa è che la scelta che ho fatto io, ovvero seguire il percorso k che permette in 6-8 ore di visitare tutto il Plitvice Lakes National Park non si è rivelata una scelta vincente. 

Although the park is custom-designed to make the experience for tourists as easy as possible, it is not so easy to find your way around it and especially to choose the best possible route. Also because there are so many trails and, depending on the time you can spend visiting the park, it's important to carefully choose which one to follow. The premise, which is a necessary one, is that the choice I made, that is to follow the K route that allows in 6-8 hours to visit the entire Plitvice Lakes National Park did not turn out to be a winning choice. 

Sia per la lunghezza del percorso, ben 18.4 km, sia per il fatto che la zona più scenografica ed accattivante si trovi di fatto nella parte iniziale e centrale del percorso, metà del percorso è una sorta di lungo hike in mezzo ai boschi con vista lago. Certamente non avrete al vostro fianco la mole di turisti che si concentra nella parte più famosa del parco, ma a parer mio non ne vale davvero la pena. Il percorso migliore è, invece, il C, che è una rivisitazione migliorata dei percorsi A e B. 

Both because of the length of the trail, a good 18.4 km, and the fact that the most scenic and captivating area is actually located in the early and middle part of the trail, half of the trail is a kind of long hike through the woods with a lake view. There won't certainly be the amount of tourists that is concentrated in the most famous part of the park, but in my opinion it is not really worth it. Instead, the best route is C, which is an improved retracement of routes A and B. 

La parte iniziale del vostro percorso sarà dunque una parte del sentiero A, un anello che consente al visitatore di ammirare i laghi inferiori partendo proprio dall'ingresso 1 del parco. Visiterete Veliki Slap, la cascata più famosa di Plitvice Lakes National Park e tutte le altre cascate che compongono questa zona. Una volta raggiunta l'area ristoro e fatta la doverosa estenuante fila salirete sulla barca e raggiungerete la parte opposta del lago Kozjak (percorso B). 

The initial part of your route will therefore be a part of Trail A, a loop that allows the visitor to admire the lower lakes starting right from Entrance 1 of the park. You'll see Veliki Slap, the most famous waterfall in Plitvice Lakes National Park and all the other waterfalls that make up this area. Once you reach the refreshment area and make the dutiful grueling line, there's a chance to board the boat and reach the opposite side of Lake Kozjak (route B). 

Da qui potrete concludere la vostra esperienza concludendo il percorso B con una corsa sulla navetta (gratuita, come la barca) che vi riporterà a ridosso dell'entrata del parco. Oppure proseguire con il percorso C che allungherà un pochino le tempistiche ma vi permetterà di ammirare anche gli imperdibili laghi superiori. Saranno tre i laghi che aggiungerete alla lista ed il percorso diventerà di 8 km.

From here you can end your experience by finishing the Route B with a ride on the shuttle (it's free, as the boat ride) that takes you back close to the park entrance. Or continue with Route C, which will lengthen the timeline a little but allows you to see the unmissable upper lakes. There are then three lakes to add to the list and the trail is now 8km long.

Se invece al punto di ristoro deciderete di non tornare sui vostri passi, oppure di non salire sulla barca che vi porterà sull'altra sponda, farete dunque come me e vi addentrerete nella zona meno turistica del parco (il famoso percorso K), che vi porterà fino al Proscansko Jezero. Perdersi è impossibile, perchè il percorso segue circolarmente i laghi. 

If, on the other hand, at the refreshment point you decide not to retrace your steps, or not to get on the boat that takes visitors to the other shore, you can do like me and enter the less touristy area of the park (the famous K-route), which leads all the way to Proscansko Jezero. Getting lost is impossible, because the route follows the lakes in a circular route. 

GLI ALTRI PERCORSI NEL PLITIVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK

Esistono tuttavia altri tre percorsi tra i quali potrete scegliere durante la visita a Plitvice Lakes National Park. Il primo è il percorso E, un sentiero che prende il via dall'ingresso 2 del parco e che conduce ai laghi superiori sino a Proscansko Jezero. Comincerete con l'attraversata in barca per concludere con il bus navetta (5.2 km). Il percorso F è molto simile all'E, ma sarà diversa la parte centrale (visita dei laghi inferiori e della grande cascata), mentre l'H comprende buona parte del lago Kozjak, il giro in barca, i laghi inferiori e la grande cascata, con conclusione tramite il bus navetta (8.9 km). 

THE OTHER ROUTES IN PLITIVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK

However, there are three other trails you can choose from while visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park. The first is Route E, a trail that starts at entrance 2 of the park and leads to the upper lakes all the way to Proscansko Jezero. You'll immediately board the boat that crosses the lake and end the journey with the shuttle bus (5.2 km). Route F is very similar to E, but the middle part (visiting the lower lakes and the large waterfall) will be different, while H includes a good part of Lake Kozjak, the boat ride, the lower lakes and the large waterfall, concluding by shuttle bus (8.9 km).

Two days in Zadar - The city center and Plitvice National Park (day 1: 15 things to see in Zadar)

Piccola ma accogliente, giovanile ma allo stesso tempo ricca di storia. E un tramonto che ogni sera toglie davvero il fiato. Zara, o meglio Zadar in croato, è stata una piacevolissima sorpresa durante questo mio 2024 dedicato alle "toccate e fughe" in giro per l'Europa. Era la mia prima volta in Croazia, la seconda volta nei Balcani dopo l'esperienza in Slovenia di parecchi anni fa (mini tour della Slovenia) e devo dire che la piccola cittadina che si affaccia sul Mar Adriatico non ha deluso le attese. Come non le ha deluse quello che a conti fatti era il grande obiettivo del viaggio, ovvero il Parco Nazionale di Plitvice che finalmente, dopo svariati tentativi, sono riuscito a visitare. Ma andiamo con ordine, perchè prima di visitare lo stupendo parco di Plitvice, ho speso un'intera giornata girovagando per Zara che, senza troppo faticare, può essere tranquillamente visitata anche in un solo giorno. E quindi, se siete alla ricerca di un percorso che vi consenta di visitate la città in un solo giorno, questo è il post che fa per voi. Ecco i 15 luoghi da non perdere in un giorno a Zara. 

Small but cozy, youthful but at the same time rich in history. And with a sunset that really takes your breath away every evening. Zadar was a very pleasant surprise during this 2024 dedicated to many and many very quick trips around Europe. It was my first time in Croatia, my second time in the Balkans after my experience in Slovenia several years ago (mini tour of Slovenia), and I must say that the small town overlooking the Adriatic Sea did not disappoint expectations. Just as it did not disappoint what was, on balance, the big goal of the trip, namely Plitvice National Park, which I finally managed to visit after several attempts. But first things first, because before visiting the stunning Plitvice Park, I spent an entire day wandering around Zadar, which, without too much effort, can be easily visited even in a single day. And so, if you are looking for a walking tour that allows you to visit the city in a single day, this is the post for you. Here are the 15 places not to miss in one day in Zadar.

COSA VEDERE A ZARA IN UN GIORNO - TOUR DEL CENTRO STORICO

1) La Sfinge

Il tour a piedi di un giorno di Zadar comincia da un luogo particolare e con tutta probabilità tra i meno menzionati dalle guide turistiche. Siamo a nord della città, in un piccolo parco neppure ben tenuto... Eppure non ho saputo resistere al fascino della Zadarska sfinga, la Sfinge di Zara (indirizzo: Obala kneza Trpimira 24), commissionata nel 1918 dal vedovo in lutto Giovanni Smirich e che presenta alcune differenze uniche rispetto all’originale, tra cui una scultura di un’aquila sul petto. Si tratta della più grande sfinge d'Europa. Ecco, tra i luoghi da visitare in un giorno a Zara, probabilmente la Sfinge non rientrerà tra le 10 cose più interessanti, ma sicuramente può essere buon punto per cominciare l'esplorazione della città: costeggerete, infatti, il mare per un buon chilometro prima di addentrarvi nel centro storico della principale città della Dalmazia. 

WHAT TO SEE IN ZADAR IN ONE DAY - TOUR OF THE OLD TOWN

1) The Sphinx

The one-day walking tour of Zadar begins with a special place and most likely among the least mentioned in guidebooks. We are in the north of the city, in a small park not even well maintained.... Yet I couldn't resist the allure of the Zadarska sfinga, the Sphinx of Zadar (address: Obala kneza Trpimira 24), commissioned in 1918 by the grieving widower Giovanni Smirich and featuring some unique differences from the original, including a sculpture of an eagle on its chest. It is the largest sphinx in Europe. Here, among the places to visit in one day in Zadar, the Sphinx will not probably be among the 10 most interesting things, but it can certainly be a good place to start exploring the city: you will, in fact, skirt the sea for a good kilometer before entering the historic center of the main city of Dalmatia.

2) Gradski most e Porta da Mar

Il Gradski Most, il piccolo ponte pedonale che collega il centro storico con la periferia sarà con tutta probabilità il vostro primo impatto con la Zara diciamo così "turistica". Ad attendervi al di la del ponte, oltre ai tantissimi venditori di mini crociere che partono proprio da Zara, ci sarà una delle porte d'ingresso in città, la Porta da Mar, ovvero la porta del mare. Risalente al Cinquecento, presenta elementi di un precedente arco di trionfo romano ed anche il leone di San Marco, simbolo di Venezia. 

2) Gradski most and Porta da Mar

Gradski Most, the small pedestrian bridge that connects the old town with the suburbs will most likely be your first impact with the "touristy" Zadar. You'll notice vendors of mini-cruises that depart right from Zadar, and then one of the  gates of entry into the city, Porta da Mar, or the Gateway to the Sea. Dating from the 16th century, it features elements of an earlier Roman triumphal arch and also the lion of St. Mark, the symbol of Venice.

3) Museo del Vetro Antico e Museo delle Illusioni

Situati uno di fianco all'altro non lontani dalla Porta de Mar, il Museo del Vetro Antico ed il Museo delle Illusioni sono tra i musei più importanti di Zara. Il primo, il Museo del Vetro Antico, vi porterà nel mondo della lavorazione del vetro in un percorso arricchito anche da rari esemplari provenienti dall'antico Egitto e dalla Mesopotamia. Sono migliaia i pezzi pregiati che potrete osservare. Decisamente più divertente l'esperienza nel Museo delle Illusioni, dove niente è come sembra. A metà del percorso potrete anche camminare nel Vortex Tunnel, dove camminare diventerà quasi un'impresa titanica. Tra giochi ottici e tanto divertimento, sarà una tappa apprezzatissima soprattutto se state viaggiando con bambini al seguito. 

3) Museum of Antique Glass and Museum of Illusions

Located side by side not far from the Porta de Mar, the Museum of Ancient Glass and the Museum of Illusions are among the most important museums in Zadar. The Museum of Ancient Glass takes visitors into the world of glassmaking on a tour also enriched by rare specimens from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. There are thousands of valuable pieces that can be observed. I really enjoyed the experience at the Museum of Illusions, where nothing is as it seems. Halfway through you can also walk through the Vortex Tunnel, where walking will become almost a challenge. Between optical games and lots of fun, it will be a much appreciated stop especially if you are traveling with children. 

3) Mercato di Pijaca (Tržnica Zadar)

Risalente addirittura al periodo del Medioevo, il Mercato di Pijaca è il luogo perfetto per acquistare i migliori prodotti che la Dalmazia ha da offrire. Su tutti il formaggio Paski Sir, proveniente dall'isola di Pag. 

4) Piazza Petar Zoranic (Trg Petra Zoranića)

Uno dei luoghi di ritrovo degli abitanti di Zara è Piazza Petar Zoranic, che prende il nome dallo scrittore scrittore rinascimentale. Mangiate un gelato o sorseggiate un caffè al centro della piazza, mentre ammirate il Palazzo del Provveditorato.

3) Pijaca Market (Tržnica Zadar)

Dating as far back as the Middle Ages, Pijaca Market is the perfect place to buy the best products Dalmatia has to offer. Above all, Paski Sir cheese, from the island of Pag.

 

4) Petar Zoranic Square (Trg Petra Zoranića)

One of the gathering places for the people of Zadar is Petar Zoranic Square, named after the Renaissance writer. Have an ice cream or sip coffee in the center of the square while admiring the Palace of the Provost's Office.

5) Piazza dei Cinque Pozzi (Trg Pet Bunara)

A ridosso della Piazza Petar Zoranic sorge la Piazza dei Cinque Pozzi, porta d'ingresso al vicino Queen Jelena Madijevka Park. Qui potrete ammirare gli antichissimi pozzi costruiti durante il periodo dell’assedio turco per garantire l’approvvigionamento idrico alla città. Qui, nel 1700, venne poi inaugurato il primo giardino pubblico, che è ancora uno dei luoghi più iconici dell’intera Dalmazia. Nei dintorni, non perdetevi neppure la torre del Capitano con la sua forma a pentagono che rappresenta l’unico resto delle antiche fortificazioni medievali.  

5) Five Wells Square (Trg Pet Bunara)

Close to Petar Zoranic Square stands the Five Wells Square, the gateway to the nearby Queen Jelena Madijevka Park. Here you can admire the very old wells built during the Turkish siege period to ensure the city's water supply. Here, in 1700, the first public garden was later opened, which is still one of the most iconic places in the whole of Dalmatia. Nearby, don't miss the Captain's Tower either, with its pentagonal shape representing the only remnant of the ancient medieval fortifications.  

6) Queen Jelena Madijevka Park

Il Queen Jelena Madijevka Park è il suggestivo polmone verde del centro storico di Zara, con vista (davvero stupenda) sul mare e sulla Porta di Terra, una delle quattro porte d'ingresso alla città vecchia. E' il più antico parco della Dalmazia e fu costruito sui resti di un'antica fortificazione militare, di cui oggi si possono ammirare le rovine. 

6) Queen Jelena Madijevka Park

Queen Jelena Madijevka Park is the striking green lung of Zadar's old town, with (truly stunning) views of the sea and the Land Gate, one of the four gates to the old city. It is the oldest park in Dalmatia and was built on the remains of an old military fortification, the ruins of which can be seen today.

7) Porta di Terraferma (Land Gate)

La Porta di Terra, una sorta di arco di trionfo Romano con il Leone di San Marco, è l'altra principale porta di ingresso di Zara Vecchia. Se state seguendo  il mio percorso, non superatela ma costeggiate il mare sino a raggiungere la statua di Špiro Brusina, zoologo e malacologo croato.

7) Land Gate 

The Land Gate, a kind of Roman triumphal arch with the Lion of St. Mark, is the other main entrance gate to Old Zadar. If you are following my route, do not pass it but walk along the sea until you reach the statue of Špiro Brusina, Croatian zoologist and malacologist.

8) Chiesa di Santa Maria (Benediktinski samostan sv. Marija)

Costeggiando il mare si raggiunge il cuore pulsante del centro storico, caratterizzato dal Foro Romano, la Chiesa di San Donato, la Cattedrale e la maestosa Calle Larga. Incrocerete per prima però la chiesa di Santa Maria, la cui storia inizia addirittura nel X secolo. Il campanile, in stile romanico, fu eretto nel 1105 mentre durante il Rinascimento fu modificata la facciata che divenne in stile veneziano. 

9) Foro Romano 

Il Foro Romano fu costruito tra il I e il III secolo a. C. ed è, di fatto, il più grande di tutta la Croazia, grazie ai suoi 90 metri di estensione. Il foro ospitava anche il più esteso tempio della città dedicato a Giove.  A ridosso del Foro Romano, della Chiesa di San Donato e della Cattedrale prende il via anche Calle Larga, la via principale del centro storico di Zara, che si estende da Piazza del Popolo sino al Foro Romano appunto. 

8) Church of St. Mary (Benediktinski samostan sv. Marija).

Skirting the sea, you'll soon reach the beating heart of the old town, characterized by the Roman Forum, the Church of St. Donatus, the Cathedral and the majestic Calle Larga. However, you'll notice first the Church of St. Mary, whose history begins as far back as the 10th century. The bell tower, in Romanesque style, was erected in 1105 while during the Renaissance the facade was modified and became Venetian in style. 

9) Roman Forum 

The Roman Forum was built between the 1st and 3rd centuries B.C. and is, in fact, the largest in all of Croatia, thanks to its 90-meter extension. The forum also housed the city's largest temple dedicated to Jupiter.  Close to the Roman Forum, the Church of St. Donatus and the Cathedral, don't miss Calle Larga, the main street of Zadar's historic center, which stretches from People's Square to the Roman Forum precisely.

10) Chiesa di San Donato (Crkva sv. Donata)

Da sempre considerata uno dei simboli di Zara anche per via della sua caratteristica forma circolare, la Chiesa di San Donato è decisamente particolare anche per la sua cupola alta 27 metri. 

11) Cattedrale di Sant'Anastasia (Benediktinski samostan sv. Marija)  e salita sul campanile 

Costruita tra il 1100 ed il 1200 sopra i resti di un'antica chiesa, è il simbolo religioso di tutta Zara. L'interno della cattedrale si sviluppa su tre navate ed è ricca di affreschi risalenti al 1200. Sull’altare dell’abside, nella parte sinistra, si trova un sarcofago in cemento dove sono custodite le spoglie di Santa Anastasia. Il consiglio è quello di acquistare il biglietto che consente anche di salire sull'adiacente campanile, dove si gode di una vista davvero unica su Zara. 

10) Church of St. Donatus (Crkva sv. Donata)

Always considered one of the symbols of Zadar partly because of its distinctive circular shape, St. Donat's Church is also distinctive because of its 27-meter-high dome. 

11) Cathedral of St. Anastasia (Benediktinski samostan sv. Marija) and ascent to the bell tower. 

Built between 1100 and 1200 over the remains of an ancient church, it is the religious symbol of all of Zadar. The interior of the cathedral has three naves and is rich with frescoes dating back to 1200. On the apse altar on the left side there is a concrete sarcophagus where the remains of St. Anastasia are kept. The advice is to buy a ticket that also allows you to climb the adjacent bell tower, where there is a truly unique view of Zadar. 

12) Organo Marino (Morske orgulje)

L'Organo Marino è l’attrazione più strana ma allo stesso tempo più apprezzata di Zara. Si tratta di una vera e propria opera di ingegno che permette al mare (sì, avete capito bene!) di creare melodie grazie alle 35 canne realizzate in polietilene (differenti per lunghezza, inclinazione e diametro), situate sotto i sette gradoni che si affacciano sul mare. L'opera, creata dall'architetto croato Nikola Basic, ha aiutato notevolmente a riqualificare la costa adiacente al centro storico e richiama ogni giorno centinaia e centinaia di turisti ma anche di "locals" che si godono il mare a ritmo di... musica.

13) Saluto al Sole (Pozdrav suncu)

Il Saluto al Sole, che ancora una volta porta la firma di Nikola Basic, unisce tecnologia e arte in un colpo solo. Si tratta, infatti, di 300 pannelli sotto ai quali sono stati posizionati pannelli solari fotovoltaici attraverso i quali si crea una sorta di comunicazione simbolica con la natura sotto forma di luce. La quantità di energia è sufficiente ad alimentare l’intero sistema di illuminazione che è presente sul lungomare. Il momento migliore per ammirare le luci è sicuramente la sera, quando l'area (che al tramonto è affollatissima) si svuota e consente al visitatore di immortalare nel migliore dei modi questo bellissimo gioco di luci. 

12) Sea Organ (Morske orgulje)

The Sea Organ is the strangest but at the same time also the most popular attraction in Zadar. It is a real work of ingenuity that allows the sea (yes, you got it right!) to create melodies thanks to the 35 pipes made of polyethylene (different in length, inclination and diameter), located under the seven steps overlooking the sea. The work, created by Croatian architect Nikola Basic, has greatly helped redevelop the coast adjacent to the old town and attracts hundreds and hundreds of tourists (but also locals) every day who enjoy the sea to the rhythm of... music.

13) Greeting to the sun  (Pozdrav suncu)

Greeting the Sun, which once again bears the signature of Nikola Basic, combines technology and art in one fell swoop. It consists, in fact, of 300 panels under which photovoltaic solar panels have been placed, by which a kind of symbolic communication with nature is created thanks to the lights. The amount of energy is enough to power the entire lighting system that is present on the waterfront. The best time to admire the lights is definitely in the evening, when the area (which is crowded at sunset) empties and allows visitors to capture this beautiful play of light in the best possible way.

14) il Tramonto

Ma la cosa che più mi ha colpito di Zara è il suo tramonto. Ogni sera, nei pressi del lungo mare ed in particolare a ridosso dell'Organo Marino, potrete assistere ad uno degli spettacoli naturali più belli in assoluto. L'unica nota stonata sarà il fatto che non sarete soli, anzi... Sono centinaia e centinaia le persone (locali e non) che ogni sera si riversano qui per ammirare i colori del tramonto.

But the thing that impressed me most about Zadar is the truly amazing sunset. Every evening, near the seafront and particularly near the Sea Organ, you can witness one of the most beautiful natural spectacles ever. The only jarring note is the fact that you will not be alone. There are, in fact, hundreds and hundreds of people (locals and tourists) who flock here every evening to admire the colors of the sunset. 

DOVE CENARE ED I MIGLIORI LOCALI A ZARA

Dopo aver ammirato il tramonto, avrete sicuramente fame... e sete. Ecco allora qualche consiglio sui migliori ristoranti e locali a Zara, partendo dal ristorante vegano The Botanist, situato proprio sul lungo mare a ridosso del centro storico. I prezzi sono abbastanza elevati, ma la qualità ottima. Il secondo è Morita, vicinissimo sia all'Organo Marino che al Saluto al Sole. Il suo brunch è decisamente invitante. Altri ristoranti che meritano particolare attenzione sono Butler Gourmet&cocktails Garden, Pet Bunara (entrambi eleganti) e, se amate gli hamburgers, Bezburger. Se invece volete bere una birra di qualità nel cuore del centro storico vi consiglio Deja Brew Pub Zadar, mentre se amate invece i cocktails il locale che fa per voi è il Salone del Giardino (Garden Zadar).

WHERE TO DINE AND THE BEST BARS IN ZADAR

After admiring the sunset, you must be famished... and thirsty. So here are a few tips about the best restaurants and bars in Zadar, starting with the vegan restaurant The Botanist, located right on the waterfront near the old town. The prices are quite high, but the quality of the food is excellent. The second one is Morita, very close to both the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun. Its brunch is definitely inviting. Other restaurants that deserve special attention are Butler Gourmet&cocktails Garden, Pet Bunara (both elegant) and, if you love hamburgers, Bezburger. If, on the other hand, you want to drink quality beer in the heart of the old town, I recommend Deja Brew Pub Zadar, while if you love cocktails, the place for you is the Garden Zadar.
