C'è una strada nell'ovest del Canada che da tempo ormai fa sognare i viaggiatori di tutto il mondo, un po' come accade per le tantissime Scenic Byways degli Stati Uniti. Nessuna però può essere equiparata alla British Columbia Highway 99, il cui tratto più famoso è conosciuto come Sea To Sky Highway, ovvero il tratto di quasi 200 km che collega Vancouver a Pemberton. Dei suoi 377 km (la Highway 99 termina alle porte di Kamloops) i primi 100 sono sicuramente quelli più affascinanti... e sono anche quelli che abbiamo percorso noi durante la prima tappa, da Vancouver a Whistler, due ore buone spese con il mare da una parte e la montagna dall'altra. Non è un caso, infatti, che il suo nome sia proprio Sea To Sky Highway: già, perché in primo luogo collega davvero il mare (Vancouver) al cielo (le montagne di Pemberton), ma poi anche per i suoi panorami davvero incredibili. L'unico neo, ma qui è la natura ad imporlo, sono le poche possibilità di trovare piazzole di sosta per scattare bellissime foto al paesaggio. Ma è una "pecca" che gli perdoniamo volentieri...
There is one road in the west of Canada that has been making travelers around the world dream for some time now, a bit like the many Scenic Byways in the United States. None, however, can be equated with British Columbia Highway 99, whose most famous section is known as the Sea To Sky Highway, the nearly 200-km stretch from Vancouver to Pemberton. Of its 377 km (Highway 99 ends at the gates of Kamloops), the first 100 are surely the most fascinating... and they are also the ones we drove during the first stage, from Vancouver to Whistler, two hours spent with the sea on one side and the mountains on the other. It is no accident, in fact, that its name is really Sea To Sky Highway: because firstly it really connects the sea (Vancouver) to the sky (the Pemberton Mountains), but then also because of its really incredible views. The only drawback, but nature dictates it here, are the few opportunities to find rest stops to take beautiful photos of the landscape. But it is a "flaw" we gladly forgive them....
COSA VEDERE LUNGO LA SEA TO SKY HIGHWAY
E' vero che tra Vancouver e Whistler ci sono solamente 120 km, ma quel gioiellino chiamato "Sea to Sky Highway" offre davvero molteplici possibilità di svago e luoghi in cui spendere intere giornate. Per questo la scelta del "cosa vedere lungo la Sea To Sky Highway" non è stata affatto semplice e sono tante le cose che abbiamo dovuto togliere dal nostro programma di viaggio nonostante meritassero molto di più. Qualche esempio? Senza dover neppure lasciare l'area di Vancouver, ma dopo aver già intrapreso la Sea To Sky Highway, consigliamo se avrete tempo una veloce sosta al Lighthouse Park, uno dei parchi più belli di Vancouver. Anzi, per l'esattezza qui siamo a West Vancouver, non lontano dal terminal dal quale partono i ferry diretti a Vancouver Island, un'altra tra le tantissime bellezze dei dintorni di Vancouver che abbiamo a malincuore dovuto lasciare ad un futuro viaggio. Al Lighthouse Park spiccano alcuni dei più grandi abeti Douglas, e sono tantissimi i sentieri che conducono quasi tutti alla grande attrazione, ovvero il faro. Il lighthouse è raggiungibile anche con una passeggiata di soli 10 minuti, ma il fascino del Lighthouse Park sono proprio i sentieri che conducono a Starboat Cove (la spiaggia) ed al faro. Sono diversi i sentieri che s'intersecano, creando un loop di 3.3 km. Per non sbagliare, dovrete seguire nell'ordine Salal Loop, Arbustus Trail, Deer Fern Trail, ancora l'Arbustus Trail, Eagle Point Lookout, Arbustus Trail (sì, ancora lui), Valley Trail, Starboat Cove, East Beach, Beacon Lane trail e completare il loop percorrendo anche Pine Trail e Seven Sisters Trail. Come spesso succede, è molto più complicato da spiegare che da seguire...
IL TRAIL NEL DETTAGLIO

Poco più a nord, un altro luogo particolarmente amato dagli abitanti di Vancouver è Porteau Cove Provincial Park (45 minuti a nord), che regala bellissime viste su Howe Sound, ma anche tantissime possibilità di fare sport, in particolare immersioni, kayak, paddle o semplicemente prendere il sole durante i mesi estivi lungo le sue rive. Per chi invece viaggia con i bambini consigliamo il Britannia Mine Museum (34 dollari), un edificio di 20 piani che fu per oltre 70 anni un'importante fonte di minerale di rame per l'intero Canada. Qui troverete 7000 manufatti, 9500 foto, edifici storici, 3000 documenti e... anche la possibilità di viaggiare a bordo di un trenino attraverso un tunnel usato fino al 1914 per il trasporto del mirale. Le attrazioni principali del museo, oltre al treno, sono The Underground, che permette di conoscere la vita dei minatori di fine '800, e soprattutto Boom, con effetti visivi straordinari che faranno divertire grandi e piccoli. La natura storica del sito ha portato alla realizzazione di molti film e produzioni televisive, in particolare Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, l'episodio "Paper Clip" di The X-Files, Okja., The Man in the High Castle e MacGyver.
Il primo vero stop per noi sono state le Shannon Falls, quando ormai siamo già alle porte di Squamish, una delle piccole cittadine canadesi che più ci è piaciuta. Non così clamorose invece le Shannon Falls, che si raggiungono con una brevissima passeggiata di 400 metri. Nonostante siano le più alte dell'intera British Columbia (l'acqua cade da un'altezza di 335 metri), non possiamo considerarle tra le più belle dello stato, soprattutto considerando quelle del Wells Gray Provincial Park. Le Shannon Falls hanno però da sempre svolto un ruolo importante per la Squamish First Nation (le prime persone a vivere in questa zona), secondo le cui credenze fu proprio un serpente di mare a due teste (Say-noth-ka) a formare le odierne Shannon Falls.
WHAT TO SEE ALONG THE SEA TO SKY HIGHWAY
It is true that there are only 120 km that separate Vancouver and Whistler, but that little gem called the Sea to Sky Highway really offers multiple recreational opportunities and places to spend entire days. Therefore, the choice of "what to see along the Sea To Sky Highway" was not that easy, and there were so many places we had to remove from our travel plans despite the fact that they definitely deserved so much more. A few examples? You don't have to leave the Vancouver to visit the Lighthouse Park, one of Vancouver's most beautiful parks. Well, to be honest, this is West Vancouver, not far from the terminal from which ferries to Vancouver Island depart. Some of the largest Douglas fir trees stand out at Lighthouse Park, and there are plenty of trails that lead almost all the way to the big attraction, which is the lighthouse. You can also get to the lighthouse with a 10-minute walk from the parking lot, but the charm of Lighthouse Park is really the trails that lead to Starboat Cove (the beach) and the lighthouse. There are several intersecting trails, creating a 3.3-kilometer loop trail. To make sure you don't get it wrong, you'll have to follow in order the Salal Loop, Arbustus Trail, Deer Fern Trail, again the Arbustus Trail, Eagle Point Lookout, Arbustus Trail (yes, again), Valley Trail, Starboat Cove, East Beach, Beacon Lane trail and complete the loop by following the Pine Trail and Seven Sisters Trail. As often happens, It's harder to explain than to follow...
THE TRAIL INFOS

A little further north, another place particularly beloved by Vancouver residents is Porteau Cove Provincial Park (45 minutes north), which offers beautiful views of Howe Sound, but also plenty of opportunities for sports, particularly diving, kayaking, paddleboarding or simply sunbathing during the summer months along its shores. For those traveling with children, however, we recommend the Britannia Mine Museum ($34), a 20-story building that has been an important source of copper ore for the whole of Canada for more than 70 years. Here you will find 7,000 artifacts, 9500 photos, historic buildings, 3,000 documents, and. even the chance to ride a train through a tunnel used until 1914 to transport myral. The museum's main attractions, in addition to the train, are The Underground, which allows visitors to learn about the life of miners in the late 1800s, and especially Boom, with extraordinary visual effects that entertains children and adults alike. The historical nature of the site has led to many films and television productions: Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, the "Paper Clip" episode of The X-Files, Okja., The Man in the High Castle, and MacGyver.
The first real stop for us are the Shannon Falls, and we're already on the outskirts of Squamish, one of the small Canadian towns we enjoyed most. We can't say the same for the Shannon Falls, which are reached by a very short 400-meter walk. Although they are the highest in all of British Columbia (the water falls from a height of 335 meters), we cannot consider them among the most beautiful in the state, especially considering those visited in the Wells Gray Provincial Park. However, Shannon Falls have always played an important role for the Squamish First Nation (the first people to live in this area), according to whose beliefs it was a two-headed sea serpent (Say-noth-ka) that formed today's Shannon Falls.
LA SEA TO SKY GONDOLA, QUESTA VOLTA E' DAVVERO "DAL MARE AL CIELO..."
Dal mare al cielo in dieci minuti. No, non è uno scherzo. La Sea To Sky Gondola è una delle funivie più belle al mondo, che dai sobborghi di Squamish conduce al Summit Lodge, dal quale ammirare l'Howe Sound da una posizione davvero privilegiatissima.
SEA TO SKY GONDOLA, THIS TIME IT'S REALLY "FROM THE SEA TO THE SKY..."
From the sea to the sky in ten minutes. No, this is not a joke. The Sea To Sky Gondola is one of the most beautiful cable cars in the world and leads from the suburbs of Squamish to the Summit Lodge: here you'll get an amazing view of the Howe Sound from a truly prime location.
Il viaggio in funivia, che da 0 conduce a 885 metri sul livello del mare in soli 10 minuti, vale da solo il prezzo del biglietto, ma una volta in cima avrete la possibilità di spendere anche un'intera giornata partecipando alle numerose attività proposte dai ranger o esplorando l'area boschiva grazie ai tantissimi sentieri che partono proprio dal Summit Lodge, dove troverete anche un ristorante ed un negozio di souvenir. Il costo della Sea To Sky Gondola nel 2022 era di 48 dollari.
The gondola ride, which takes you from 0 to 885 meters above sea level in just 10 minutes, is worth the price of the ticket, but once at the top you will also have the opportunity to spend an entire day participating in the many activities offered by the rangers or exploring the forested area thanks to the many trails that start right from the Summit Lodge, where you will also find a restaurant and a gift store. The cost of the Sea To Sky Gondola in 2022 was $48.
In cima la grande attrazione è il The Summit Lodge Viewing Dec, l'enorme terrazza panoramica a picco sull'intera valle, da dove parte lo scenografico "suspension bridge". Gli altri imperdibili view point sono il The Chief Overlook Viewing Platfor, situato a metà del Panorama Trail, ed il The Spirit Viewing Platform all'interno dello Spirit Trail.
The main attraction at the top is The Summit Lodge Viewing Dec, the huge viewing terrace overlooking the entire valley, close to the beautiful suspension bridge. The other not-to-be-missed viewpoints are The Chief Overlook Viewing Platfor, located halfway up the Panorama Trail, and The Spirit Viewing Platform within the Spirit Trail.
I MIGLIORI TRAIL DEL SEA TO SKY GONDOLA
Una volta in cima, ad attendervi ci saranno anche numerosissimi sentieri adatti a chi è alla ricerca di una semplice passeggiata oppure ad hikers esperti. Noi abbiamo percorso i quattro sentieri semplici, che prendono il via dal Summit Lodge, sono corredati da pannelli illustrativi e conducono a diversi view point:
1) Panorama Trail
Un semplice e divertente loop, che conduce al The Chief, una passerella a strapiombo con vista a 180 gradi sulla valle.

SEA TO SKY GONDOLA'S BEST TRAILS
Once at the top, visitors can hike one fo the many trails suitable for those looking for a simple walk or for experienced hikers. We hiked all the four easy trails, which start from the Summit Lodge and lead to several viewpoints:
1) Panorama Trail
A simple and fun loop, leading to The Chief, an overhanging boardwalk with 180-degree views of the valley.
LENGTH: 1.6 km
DURATION: 30 minutes
DIFFICULTY: easy
2) The Lookback Trail
Un altro sentiero ad anello che interseca il Panorama Trail e conduce ad una scogliera che si affaccia sul Goat Ridge.
DURATA: 15 minuti
3) Spirit Trail
Il sentiero di 400 metri prende il via dal Summit Lodge ed inizia con un lunghissimo e spettacolare ponte tibetano. Questo percorso è un viaggio culturale attraverso la storia del popolo delle Prime Nazioni (i nativi canadesi) che ha occupato e governato questa regione moltissimi anni fa.

2) The Lookback Trail
Another loop trail that intersects the Panorama Trail and leads to a bluff overlooking Goat Ridge.
DURATION: 15 minutes
3) Spirit Trail
This 400-meter trail starts at the Summit Lodge and begins with a very long and spectacular Tibetan bridge. This trail is a cultural journey through the history of the First Nations people (Native Canadians) who occupied and ruled this region many, many years ago.

Il Wonderland Lake Loop s'immerge nella foresta e conduce al bellissimo Wonderland Lake. Qui, una passerella consentirà al visitatore di circumnavigare il lago per ammirarlo da diverse angolature. Lasciato il lago, potrete tornare al punto di partenza seguendo il medesimo percorso oppure completare il loop percorrendo una strada sterrata per circa 1 km.
DISTANZA: 1.6 km andata e ritorno
DURATA: 30 minuti

4) Wonderland Lake Loop
The Wonderland Lake Loop plunges into the forest and leads to the beautiful Wonderland Lake. Here, a footbridge will allow visitors to circumnavigate the lake and admire it from different angles. After leaving the lake, you can return to the starting point by following the same route or complete the loop by walking along a dirt road for about 1 km.
DISTANCE: 1.6 km round trip
DURATION: 30 minutes
DIFFICULTY: intermediate
Gli appassionati di camminate potranno invece seguire sentieri ben più impegnativi, su tutti il Neverland Loop Trail (11.6 km, durata 3-6 ore, dislivello 1000 metri), l'Al’s Habrich Trail (12 km, durata 3-6 ore, dislivello 1000 metri), lo Sky Pilot Valley Trail (7.8 km, durata 3-4 ore, dislivello 380 metri), lo Skyline Trail (24 km, durata 14 ore, dislivello 700 metri) ed il Shannon Basin Loop trail (6 km, durata 2-3 ore, dislivello 500 metri).
Hiking enthusiasts, on the other hand, can follow far more challenging trails, for example the Neverland Loop Trail (11.6 km, duration 3-6 hours, elevation gain 1,000 meters), Al's Habrich Trail (12 km, duration 3-6 hours, elevation gain 1,000 meters), Sky Pilot Valley Trail (7.8 km, duration 3-4 hours, elevation gain 380 meters), Skyline Trail (24 km, duration 14 hours, elevation gain 700 meters) and Shannon Basin Loop trail (6 km, duration 2-3 hours, elevation gain 500 meters).
SQUAMISH, LA "CITTA' DA VISITARE" SECONDO IL NEW YORK TIMES
Nel 2015 il Times l'ha inserita tra le città da visitare e noi non possiamo che essere d'accordo. Se state percorrendo il tratto che da Vancouver conduce a Whistler, non potete davvero non trascorrere almeno qualche ora per le vie (e soprattutto per il suo downtown) di Squamish, un tempo casa delle popopazioni native da cui la città ha preso anche il nome e poi capolinea meridionale della Pacific Eastern Railway nei primi anni del secolo scorso. E ora? Squamish è diventata popolare presso i residenti di Vancouver e Whistler che sfuggono all'aumento del costo della vita in quelle città e vengono a vivere proprio a Squamish, situata a meno di un'ora da entrambe le città. Noi abbiamo girovagato per il vibrante downtown, complice un piccolo concerto all'aperto, un mercatino e quell'aria rilassata che pervade sempre Squamish. Ah, dopo tantissimi viaggi in Nordamerica, è proprio a Squamish che abbiamo assaggiata la mitica limonata preparata a casa dalla mamma e venduta dalla piccola figlia come succede nei film. Anche per questo Squamish rimarrà sempre nei nostri ricordi...
SQUAMISH, THE "MUST-VISIT CITY" ACCORDING TO THE NEW YORK TIMES
In 2015, the New York Times listed it as one of the cities to visit, and we can only agree with that. If you're traveling the stretch from Vancouver to Whistler, you really can't fail to spend at least a few hours on the streets (and especially its downtown) of Squamish, once home to the native peoples from whom the city took its name and then the southern terminus of the Pacific Eastern Railway in the early part of the last century. In the present days, Squamish has become popular with Vancouver and Whistler residents who escape the rising cost of living in those cities and come to live right in Squamish, located less than an hour from both cities. We wandered around the vibrant downtown area, thanks to a small outdoor concert, a market and that relaxed air that always pervades Squamish. Well, after so many trips to North America, it was in Squamish that we sampled the legendary lemonade made at home by mom and sold by the little daughter as it happens in the movies. That is also why Squamish will always remain in our memories....
Servirebbero davvero due o tre giorni per vedere tutto quello che questi 120 km di Sea To Sky Highway hanno da offrire. Se doveste avere questa possibilità, non perdetevi Alice Lake Provincial Park, che nelle belle giornate richiama sia campeggiatori che locali grazie alle sue acque perfette per le famiglie in cerca di relax. In un'ora buona, poi, potrete fare anche un giro del lago senza fatica godendo della natura che circonda Alice Lake. Ma il parco più bello dell'area è sicuramente Garibaldi Provincial Park, un'area di 1950 km quadrati (suddivisa in cinque distinte aree) famosissima per i suoi sentieri escursionistici piuttosto lunghi ma davvero scenografici, che si concludono una volta raggiunti laghi dai colori davvero incredibili.
Le meraviglie naturali si susseguono chilometro dopo chilometro. Numerosi cartelli segnalano le famosissime Brandywine Falls, all'interno del Brandywine falls Provincial Park, 143 ettari di bosco che si sviluppano intorno ad una cascata alta ben 70 metri.
It would really take two or three days to see all that the beauties of this stretch of the Sea To Sky Highway. Should you ever get that chance, don't miss Alice Lake Provincial Park, which on nice days attracts campers and locals alike because of its waters perfect for families looking to relax. You can also take an effortless tour of the lake 8It take 1 hour) while enjoying the nature that surrounds Alice Lake. But the most beautiful park in the area is definitely Garibaldi Provincial Park, a 1950-square-kilometer area (divided into five distinct areas) famous for its rather long but truly scenic hiking trails, which end once you reach lakes of truly incredible colors.
Natural wonders follow one another kilometer after kilometer. Numerous signs point to the world-famous Brandywine Falls, within the Brandywine falls Provincial Park, 143 hectares of forest surrounding a waterfall as high as 70 meters.

Il percorso segue per il primo tratto il bosco, attraversa i binari della ferrovia (qui potrete scattare foto scenografiche) ed in brevissimo tempo conduce alla piattaforma di osservazione. La lunghezza del trail tra andata e ritorno è di 1.3 km.
The trail follows the forest for the first part, crosses the railroad tracks (here you can take scenic photos) and in a very short time leads to the observation platform. The length of the trail (out and back) is 1.3 km.
Una manciata di chilometri prima di entrare a Whistler, invece, una deviazione sulla sinistra lungo la Callaghan Road conduce alla meno famosa, ma sicuramente la più bella cascata dell'intera giornata, Alexander Falls. Alta 43 metri, la cascata si trova nella Callaghan Valley, qualche metro prima del Whistler Olympic Park, dove si svolsero numerosi eventi olimpici nel 2010.
A handful of miles before entering Whistler, however, a detour to the left along Callaghan Road leads to the less famous but certainly the most beautiful waterfall of the entire day, Alexander Falls. The waterfall (43 meters) is located eithin the Callaghan Valley, a few meters before the Whistler Olympic Park, where several Olympic events were held in 2010.
