La maggior parte dei viaggiatori europei, con tutta probabilità, la sentiranno nominare per la prima volta, non gli americani che da ormai parecchi anni la considerano una succulenta meta vacanziera soprattutto da settembre a maggio, quando nel resto degli States le temperature tendono ad abbassarsi mentre qui... beh fa sostanzialmente sempre caldo. Lake Havasu City, al confine tra Arizona e California (ma sul versante arizoniano, diciamo così) è un'autentica oasi nel deserto eppure per molti visitatori continua ad essere semplicemente una tappa di passaggio nei loro affascinanti on the road nel west americano. Ci si ferma chi è diretto a Palm Springs, ci si ferma chi proprio dalla ricca città californiana è diretto nel Nevada e quindi a Las Vegas, o ancora chi sta attraversando i deserti dell'ovest alla ricerca di Saguaro e sta viaggiando verso Phoenix. Insomma, tutti passano da Lake Havasu City, l'unica grande città di riferimento in questo tratto nord-ovest di deserto di Sonora ma in pochi ci si fermano. E questo, almeno per noi, è un errore.

Lake Havasu City, on the Arizona-California border (but on the Arizona side) is a veritable oasis in the desert,but for many visitors it continues to be just a stopover on their fascinating on-the-road tours of the American West. People stop in Lake Havasu City because are heading to Palm Springs, or just because they are leaving the wealthy California city and heading to Nevada and then to Las Vegas, or even becuse they're crossing the deserts of the West in search of Saguaro and traveling to Phoenix. In short, many people passes through Lake Havasu City, the only major landmark city in this northwest stretch of Sonoran desert, but few people decide to visit it. And that's a huge mistake!

Eppure qui troverete il fiume Colorado come non l'avete mai visto a livello di colori, spiagge di sabbia bianca, possibilità di camminare lungo bellissimi sentieri, praticare tantissimi sport e soprattutto quelli acquatici e alcune esperienze indimenticabili come assistere ad uno show nel saloon più remoto degli interi Stati Uniti. E poi c'è lui, il London Bridge, e no, non è assolutamente uno scherzo. Ecco, se siete ancora indecisi se trascorrere o meno un paio di giorni a Lake Havasu City, Arizona, ecco dieci buoni motivi per farlo: le 10 cose da fare e vedere a Lake Havasu City!
Yet here you will find the Colorado River as you've never seen before it in terms of colors, white sand beaches, opportunities to walk along beautiful trails, enjoy lots of sports and especially water sports, and some unforgettable experiences such as attending a show in the most remote saloon in the entire United States. And then there's the gem, the London Bridge, and no, it's definitely not a joke. So, if you are still undecided whether or not to spend a couple of days in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, here are ten good reasons to do so: the to 10 things to see and do in Lake Havasu City!

1- LONDON BRIDGE AND ENGLISH VILLAGE
Lake Havasu City, che prende il nome dall'enorme bacino idrico (Lake Havasu) situato lungo il fiume Colorado, è decisamente la città più...inglese di tutti gli Stati Uniti. Già, proprio così. Il merito è della seconda attrazione più popolare dell'intera Arizona, dietro a sua maestà il Grand Canyon, ovvero il London Bridge, che collega la città con la penisola di Pittsburg, separata dalla terra ferma da Channel Canal. Non tutti sanno che questo è il vero London Bridge, o meglio il vecchio London Bridge di Londra, costruito nel 1831 e poi smontato nel 1968 e venduto all'imprenditore Robert P. McCulloch, che lo rimontò proprio a Lake Havasu con la convinzione di far diventare la città una grande meta turistica.
1- LONDON BRIDGE AND ENGLISH VILLAGE
Lake Havasu City, named after the huge reservoir (Lake Havasu) located along the Colorado River, is definitely the most...English town in the entire United States. Yep, that's right. Credit is due to the second most popular attraction in all of Arizona, behind her majesty, the Grand Canyon, namely the London Bridge, which connects the city with the Pittsburg peninsula, separated from the mainland by Channel Canal. Not everyone knows that this is the real London Bridge, or rather the old London Bridge, built in 1831 and then dismantled in 1968 and sold to entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch, who reassembled it right in Lake Havasu with the belief that it would make the city a major tourist destination.

Oggi, il London Bridge si erge orgogliosamente sul fiume Colorado e, proprio sotto di esso, troverete un piccolo e divertente scorcio londinese nel cuore del deserto di Sonora. Il Visitor Center della città è a tema "British", i negozietti, i ristoranti ed i pub situati proprio a ridosso del ponte rendono questa parte della città la più turistica e ideale per le famiglie.
Nowadays, the London Bridge stands proudly over the Colorado River, and just below it there's the funny little London glimpse into the heart of the Sonoran desert. The city's Visitor Center has a "British" theme, and the small stores, restaurants and pubs located right next to the bridge make this part of town the most touristy and family-friendly.

2- LONDON BRIDGE BEACH, BRIDGEWATER CHANNEL AND WATERFRONT
Passate sotto il London Bridge e proseguite per qualche centinaio di metri lungo il lungofiume (Waterfront) del Bridgewater Channel, il canale che separa la terra ferma dalla penisola di Pittsburg Point. Il London Bridge Resort vi farà compagnia durante questa brevissima passeggiata, durante la quale potrete ammirare il fiume Colorado come mai l'avete visto prima, con colori degne davvero... del mare! Barche di piccole e medie dimensioni e moto d'acqua sfrecciano lungo il canale insieme agli sportivi che si divertono su Kayak e Paddle.
2- LONDON BRIDGE BEACH, BRIDGEWATER CHANNEL AND WATERFRONT
Just pass under the London Bridge and continue for a few hundred yards along the waterfront of the Bridgewater Channel, the channel that separates the mainland from the Pittsburg Peninsula. The London Bridge Resort will keep you company during this very short walk, during which you will see the Colorado River as you have never seen it before, with colors worthy indeed...of the sea! Small and medium-sized boats and jet skis whizz along the canal along with sportsmen enjoying themselves on Kayaks and Paddleboards.

Raramente negli Usa abbiamo respirato un'aria così vacanziera, complice anche il periodo in cui l'abbiamo visitata, ovvero il mese di marzo, in pieno "Spring Break". Dall'altra parte del canale spicca invece la London Bridge Beach, accessibile ai visitatori tramite imbarcazione oppure tramite auto, percorrendo il London Bridge in direzione ovest.
There's really a scent of holiday in the air in Lake Havasu City, aided also by the time we visited it, namely the month of March, in the midst of "Spring Break." On the other side of the canal stands out the London Bridge Beach, which is accessible to visitors by boat or by car by driving west along London Bridge.
3- NELLIE E SALOON - THE DESERT BAR
Per raggiungere il luogo che compone il podio della classifica delle 10 cose da vedere a Lake Havasu City bisogna spostarsi di quasi 40 miglia a sud, in direzione Parker. Anche se nel vostro tragitto non è compresa Lake Havasu City ma state comunque affrontato il tratto di strada che collega Palm Springs con Phoenix, vi consigliamo ugualmente questa incredibile deviazione che vi condurrà ad un Saloon lontano anni luce dai soliti saloon nei quali sarete stati nei vostri viaggi a stelle strisce. Questo è, infatti, almeno per noi, "il Saloon", vuoi per la sua posizione alquanto remota, vuoi per la strada sterrata (5 interminabili miglia) che va percorsa per arrivarci...vuoi infine per il contesto scenografico che non ha sostanzialmente uguali: parliamo ovviamente del Nellie E Saloon - The Desert Bar. Una volta lasciata Parker in direzione Lake Havasu City, prendete la '95 e svoltate a destra lungo una strada sterrata tortuosissima (Cienega Springs Road) che in una buona mezz'ora, tra tornanti, sassi e tanta polvere vi condurrà al Nellie E Saloon.
3- NELLIE AND SALOON - THE DESERT BAR
To reach the place that makes up the podium of the list of the 10 things to see in Lake Havasu City you have to travel almost 40 miles south towards Parker. Even if your route does not include Lake Havasu City but you are still traveling the stretch of road that connects Palm Springs with Phoenix, we still recommend this incredible detour that will take you to a Saloon light years away from the usual saloons you have probably been in your previous american travels. This is, in fact, at least for us, just "the Saloon," either because of its rather remote location, or because of the dirt road (5 interminable miles) that must be traveled to get there...or finally because of the scenic setting that has essentially no equal: we are of course talking about the Nellie E Saloon - The Desert Bar. Once you leave Parker in the direction of Lake Havasu City, take '95 and turn right down a winding dirt road (Cienega Springs Road) that in a good half hour, through switchbacks, rocks and lots of dust will lead you to the Nellie E Saloon.

Senza alcun dubbio, durante il tragitto, nel cuore del deserto tra montagne prive di vegetazione, vi domanderete se questo saloon esista davvero e la risposta... è davvero sì! Alla fine della strada sbucherà una chiesetta che sembra essere uscita da un film western e poi l'enorme parcheggio affollato di auto. Saranno tutti qui per dire "io ci sono stato nel saloon più incredibile del west". Attenzione però, ci sono alcune regole da non dimenticare prima di avventurarsi verso il Nellie E Saloon - The Desert Bar.
Undoubtedly, on the way, in the heart of the desert between mountains devoid of vegetation, visitors will wonder if this saloon really exists and the answer... is really yes! At the end of the road you will pop out a little church that looks like something out of a Western movie set and then the huge parking lot crowded with cars. They will all be here to say "I've been there, in the most amazing saloon in the west." Be careful though, there are a few rules not to forget before venturing to the Nellie E Saloon - The Desert Bar.

Regola numero uno. considerato quanto sia remoto, il locale apre solamente il sabato e la domenica dalle 12 alle 18 e solamente tra il primo weekend di ottobre sino all'ultimo week end di aprile (con aperture speciali durante il Thanksgiving). Al di fuori di questo periodo, non troverete nessuno!
Rule number one. Considering how remote it is, the bar opens only on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. and only between the first weekend of October until the last weekend of April (with special openings during Thanksgiving). Outside of this period, you won't find anyone!
Regola numero 2: non c'è linea telefonica (il telefono molto probabilmente non avrà campo) e Ambulanza e Polizia sono come scrivono sul sito internet del saloon (https://www.thedesertbar.com/) "are quite a Ways out". Ovvero parecchio lontani.

Regola numero 3: accettano pagamenti soltanto tramite "cash", niente carte di credito. Una volta accettata questa regola siete pronti per assistere a musica dal vivo in una delle location più belle al mondo, ballare sulla "dancefloor", gustare una birra fresca su uno dei tanti tavolini e ancora rifocillarsi nella taverna greca (Nikos Food) che a noi è però sembrata offrire una cucina più americana che greca. Quindi non abbiate paura, il cheeseburger con le patatine non mancherà...
Rule #3: They only accept payment by cash, no credit cards. Once you accept also this rule, you are ready to enjoy live music in one of the most beautiful locations in the world, dance on the dancefloor, enjoy a cold beer on one of the many tables, and still refresh yourself in the Greek tavern (Nikos Food), which, however, seemed to us to offer more American rather than Greek cuisine. So have no fear, the cheeseburger with fries will not be missed....
4 - SARA'S CRACK TRAIL AT SARA PARK
Si torna alle porte di Lake Havasu City per uno dei trail più divertenti che abbiamo mai percorso nei nostri tanti viaggi americani. Situato all'interno del Sara Park, il Sara's Crack Trail unisce bellissime viste a tanto divertimento: 5 miglia (tra andata e ritorno) che scorreranno via davvero in maniera piacevole. Prima di raccontarvi del sentiero nel dettaglio, solo un paio di accorgimenti.
4 - SARA'S CRACK TRAIL AT SARA PARK
It's time to get back to the outskirts of Lake Havasu City for one of the funniest trails we've ever hiked in our many American travels. Located within Sara Park, Sara's Crack Trail combines beautiful views with lots of fun: 5 miles (round trip) that will really flow by nicely. Before we tell you about the trail in detail, just a couple of measures.

Il primo riguarda l'orario e consigliamo sempre il mattino presto, da ottobre a marzo per evitare di trovare lungo percorso troppe persone che renderanno meno magica l'escursione, nei mesi estivi per battere sul tempo il caldo che da queste parti è davvero tremendo. Attenzione poi ovviamente ai serpenti, soprattutto nella parte centrale del percorso, quando vi troverete a dover superare diverse rocce. Il sentiero è interamente pianeggiante e vi basterà seguire il "wash", ovvero il letto del fiume (troverete anche cartelli blu e verdi ad indicare il percorso) per non perdervi ed arrivare all'entrata del canyon, situato dopo circa 1.5 miglia dall'inizio del percorso. Noi, per non rischiare abbiamo comunque scaricato la mappa su "all trails".
The first one is about the time slot and we always recommend early morning, from October to March to avoid all the people along the trail that make the hike less magical, in the summer months to beat the heat that is really terrible in these area. Then, of course, watch out for snakes, especially in the middle section of the trail, when you will have to pass several rocks. The trail is entirely flat, and you will only need to follow the wash (there are also blue and green signs indicating the route) in order not to get lost and get to the canyon entrance, located about 1.5 miles after the start of the trail. Questa prima parte di percorso, con le pareti del canyon a fare da sfondo, è adatta a tutti, mentre quella centrale (sicuramente la più divertente), richiede particolare attenzione. Il bellissimo slot canyon (fessure all'interno del canyon) alterna tratti facili ad alcuni in cui si dovrà scendere e salire da rocce, aiutati anche da corde. Se ce l'ha fatta Marco vuol dire che possono farcela tutti, anche i bambini, ma è necessario prestare la dovuta attenzione ai tratti più impegnativi. Dopo lo slot canyon, un altro tratto pianeggiante conduce alla conclusione del trail, segnata dal fiume Colorado con la fotografatissima Balance Rock.
This first part of the trail, with the canyon walls as a backdrop, is suitable for everyone, while the middle part (definitely the funniest), requires special attention. The beautiful slot canyon alternates easy sections with some where you will have to descend and climb from rocks, aided also by ropes. If Marco made it, it means that anyone can do it, even children, but proper attention must be paid to the more challenging sections. After the slot canyon, another flat section leads to the trail's conclusion, marked by the Colorado River with the highly photographed Balance Rock.

5- ROTARY COMMUNITY PARK
Il polmone verde di Lake Havasu City è il Rotary Community Park, un parco cittadino che grazie alla sua posizione favorevole (lungo il Colorado) è il luogo più amato da tutti i locali. Parcheggiate lungo il versante nord o sud del parco e seguite i 2 miglia di passerella che segue l'andamento del fiume ed attraversa parchi giochi per i bambini, spiagge, aree verdi, campi da beach volley, uno skate park e termina al canale che conduce al London Bridge. Percorrendolo interamente potrete unire una passeggiata nel verde con quella lungo il waterfront. Se non volete perdervi neppure un centimetro del parco seguite Rotary Park Drive e parcheggiate a ridosso dello skate park, il Tinnell Memorial Skate Park.
The green lung of Lake Havasu City is Rotary Community Park, a city park whose favorable location (along the Colorado River) makes it a local favorite. Park along the north or south side of the park and follow the 2-mile boardwalk that follows the course of the river and crosses children's playgrounds, beaches, green areas, beach volleyball courts, a skate park, and ends at the canal leading to the London Bridge. By walking along it entirely, you can combine a walk in a green space with a walk along the waterfront. If you don't want to miss an inch of the park follow Rotary Park Drive and park right next to the skate park, the Tinnell Memorial Skate Park.

6- OATMAN ON ROUTE 66
Sì, lo sappiamo, Oatman non è propriamente dietro l'angolo, ma se state passando dalle parti di Lake Havasu e non siete diretti a Phoenix, state sicuramente provenendo (o ci state andando) da Las Vegas. Ecco che allora diventa inevitabile un "get your kicks on route 66" (qui il racconto della intera route 66: route 66). Già, perchè anche se per un brevissimo tratto, vi troverete ad incrociare "the mother road" e quindi quale migliore occasione per visitare Oatman, una delle tante perle della Route 66. Siamo una cinquantina di miglia a nord di Lake Havasu City, nel cuore delle Black Mountains che irrompono nel deserto del Mojave (sì, abbiamo cambiato deserto).
6- OATMAN ON ROUTE 66
Yes, we know it, Oatman is not exactly around the corner, but if you're passing through the Lake Havasu area and not heading to Phoenix, you're definitely coming from (or going to) Las Vegas. That's why you're about to "get your kicks on route 66" (here's the story of the whole route 66: route 66) becomes inevitable. Yep, because even if for a very short distance, you will be crossing "the mother road" and so what better time to visit Oatman, one of Route 66's many gems. We are about fifty miles north of Lake Havasu City, in the heart of the Black Mountains that break into the Mojave Desert.

Un tempo città mineraria, oggi piccola comunità diventata attrazione turistica anche e soprattutto grazie ai "burros", degli asinelli sparsi per la sua main street e diventati ormai parte integrante della comunità. Tanto che nei negozietti che compongono la strada principale della città, è possibile acquistare il cibo da offrire ai "burros" che ringrazieranno lasciandosi accarezzare.
Once a mining town, it is now a small community that has become a tourist attraction, thanks in part and above all to the burros, donkeys scattered throughout its main street that have become an integral part of the community. So much so that in the little stores that make up the town's main street, it is possible to buy food to offer to the burros: they will thank you by letting you pet them.
Noi l'abbiamo visitata al mattino presto (erano le 8) e, essendo gli asinelli molto furbi, non si sono fatti vedere attendendo le ore centrali della giornata per irrompere nella main street, consci che a quell'ora ci sarebbero stati decisamente più turisti.
We visited it early in the morning (it was 8 a.m.) and, being the donkeys very very clever, they did not show up waiting for the middle hours of the day to break into the main street, knowing that there would have definitely been more tourists at that time.
Tra le altre attrazioni di Oatman ricordiamo la ricostruzione di una miniera, nella quale potrete sperimentare la claustrofobica esperienza dei minatori di un tempo, e lo spettacolo che avviene nelle prime ore pomeridiane ed offerto dai Ghost Rider Gunfighters, attori-cowboy che inscenano dialoghi del vecchio west e duelli con le pistole.
Other attractions at Oatman include the reconstruction of a mine, in which you can live the claustrophobic experience of miners of yesteryear, and the show that takes place in the early afternoon hours and is offered by the Ghost Rider Gunfighters, actor-cowboys who stage Old West dialogues and gun duels.
7- BUCKSKIN MOUNTAIN STATE PARK
Ancora una volta si va verso sud, per l'esattezza 25 miglia a sud di Lake Havasu City. E ancora una volta sono il fiume Colorado e la natura a farla da padrone all'interno del Buckskin Mountain State Park, una piacevole sosta dal deserto per chi è alla ricerca di un po' di relax o perchè no anche avventura. Troverete chi si fa un bel bagno nel Colorado, con vista sulla California, chi invece fa camping o chi ancora percorre uno dei trail del parco.
7- BUCKSKIN MOUNTAIN STATE PARK
Once again we head south, 25 miles south of Lake Havasu City to be exact. And once again it's the Colorado River and nature to lord it within the Buckskin Mountain State Park, a pleasant stop from the desert for those looking for some relaxation or why not even adventure. You will find people who take a nice swim in the Colorado, overlooking California, those who go camping or those who still hike one of the park's trails.

L'ingresso allo State Park costa 10 dollari a vettura, 3 dollari a persona se invece vorrete soltanto percorrere uno dei trails. Noi abbiamo percorso il semplice Buckskin Loop Trail (che coinvolge anche il Lighting Bolt Trail), un percorso che comincia a ridosso dell'ingresso del parco e dopo una ripida salita si snoda nel cuore del Buckskin State Park.
Admission to State Park costs $10 per car, $3 per person if you just want to hike one of the trails instead. We hiked the easy Buckskin Loop Trail (which also involves the Lighting Bolt Trail), a trail that starts near the park entrance and after a steep climb winds through the heart of Buckskin State Park.

Una volta in cima alla collina, supererete attraverso un ponte la autostrada 95 e vi addentrerete in un parco decisamente selvaggio ed affascinante. A differenza dell'altro trail di cui abbiamo parlato, qui non abbiamo incrociato anima viva. In compenso le viste sul fiume Colorado, sul deserto in fiore e sulla natura del Buckskin State Park sono state impareggiabili. Il sentiero è lungo circa 3 km (loop trail) ed impiegherete circa un'oretta per percorrerlo, comprese le soste per la fotografia.
Once at the top of the hill, you will have to cross over a bridge over Highway 95 and enter a decidedly wild and fascinating park. Unlike the other trail we mentioned, we didn't see anybody here. In return, the views of the Colorado River, the blooming desert and the nature of Buckskin State Park were unparalleled. The trail is about 2 miles long (loop trail) and it takes about an hour to hike it, including stops for taking pictures

8- LANDING FERRY
Se siete alla ricerca di qualcosa di particolare all'interno delle 10 cose da fare a Lake Havasu City, una volta raggiunto il London Bridge e l'English Village potrete percorrere una manciata di metri lungo il Waterfront in direzione nord e salire a bordo del Ferry che conduce dall'altra sponda del Colorado River. Al costo di 4 dollari (andata e ritorno) potrete andare... in California. Già, perchè sull'altra sponda del fiume troverete Havasu Lake, la versione californiana di Lake Havasu City. Nulla a che spartire con quella dell'Arizona, se non per il casinò che attira ogni giorno centinaia e centinaia di visitatori: l'Havasu Landing Resort and Casino.
9- LIGHTHOUSES TOUR
Che Lake Havasu City non sia una città come le altre lo si era già ampiamente intuito. E, a proposito di stranezze, dovete sapere che in questa città è presente la più alta concentrazione di fari (lighthouses) degli interi Stati Uniti. E non c'è neppure il mare... Il tutto risale al 2000, quando un gruppo di residenti preoccupati pensò che fosse necessario fare qualcosa per migliorare la navigazione notturna per la navigazione lungo il bacino idrico del Lake Havasu: ben 26 repliche in miniatura di famosi fari sono stati costruiti lungo le coste della Pittsburgh Peninsula e sono tutti visitabili anche grazie all'aiuto della mappa che vi verrà fornita al visitor center di Lake Havasu City. Alcuni li potrete raggiungere direttamente con la vostra vettura percorrendo la Beachcomb Boulevard (una strada circolare che attraversa la penisola), altri camminando per qualche minuto, altri ancora invece solamente via mare.
8- LANDING FERRY
If you are looking for something special among the 10 things to do and see in Lake Havasu City, once you reach London Bridge and English Village you can walk a handful of yards along the Waterfront heading north and board the Ferry ride to the other side of the Colorado River. For the cost of $4 (round trip) you can really go ... to California. Yep, because on the other side of the river visitors will find Havasu Lake, California's version of Lake Havasu City. Nothing like the one in Arizona, except for the casino that attracts hundreds and hundreds of visitors every day: the Havasu Landing Resort and Casino.
9- LIGHTHOUSES TOUR
Well, you've already guessed that Lake Havasu City is no ordinary town. And, speaking of oddities, you should know that this city has the highest concentration of lighthouses in the entire United States. And there is not even the sea... It all goes back to the year 2000, when a group of concerned residents thought that something needed to be done to improve nighttime navigation for boating along the Lake Havasu Reservoir.A s many as 26 miniature replicas of famous lighthouses have been built along the shores of the Pittsburgh Peninsula, and all of them can be visited, even with the help of the map provided to you at the Lake Havasu City visitor center. Some of them can be reach directly with your car by driving down Beachcomb Boulevard (a circular road that crosses the peninsula), others by walking for a few minutes, and still others only by boat.

10- WATERSPORTS
Lake Havasu City è un autentico paradiso per gli amanti dello sport, in particolare degli sport acquatici.
