Unexpected New York: Highline Park

In ogni nostro viaggio negli Stati Uniti c'è quasi sempre stata una tappa newyorkese, motivo per cui ve l'abbiamo sostanzialmente raccontata in lungo e in largo. Dai luoghi da non perdere sino a quelli sorprendenti, come Coney Island, a Brooklyn, o Flushing Meadows nel Queens (i racconti li troverete in "USA: EAST COAST" e "NEW YORK, CAPE COD AND THE REAL AMERICA"). Ma tornando a Manhattan, durante l'on the road 2015, abbiamo scoperto un parco molto interessante e decisamente insolito. Sicuramente da inserire tra le cose alternative da vedere a New York Famoso il giusto (non è minimamente paragonabile a Central Park), ma a parer nostro merita una visita. Parliamo dell'Highline Park, nel quartiere di Chelsea, non lontano dal fiume Hudson. Per le fermate della metro vi consigliamo questo link: highline park - subway.

We've often made a stopover in New York during our american on the road and we've always talked about the "big apple" so far. From the famous places to the hidden ones, from Manhattan to Coney Island, Brooklyn, or Flushing Meadows, Queens (you can find all the stories in "USA: EAST COAST" and "NEW YORK CAPE COD AND THE REAL AMERICA"). Back to Manhattan, during the 2015 on the road, we've found out a very interesting and definitely unusual park. A kind of alternative thing to see in New York It's not very famous (you can't compare it to Central Park), but in our opinion well worth a visit. We are talking about the Highline Park, in Chelsea, not far from the Hudson River. For the subway stations we recommend this link: Highline - subway).

Ciò che rende del tutto particolare l'Highline park è la sua posizione: il parco, infatti, è stato realizzato su una sezione in disuso della ferrovia sopraelevata West Side Line che attraversa da sud a nord il quartiere di Chelsea, partendo da "Gansevoort street" nel Meatpacking district sino ad arrivare alla "34esima strada".

What makes the Highline park very special is its location: the park, in fact, has been realized on a disused section of the elevated West Side Line railway which cross Chelsea from south to north, starting from "Gansevoort Street" in the Meatpacking district until  the "34th Street".

No, non è un parco come gli altri. Preparatesi ad una camminata di quasi 3km (ma è possibile abbandonarlo anche prima se sarete stanchi) in una New York decisamente magica.

Well, that's not a park like any other. Get ready for a walk of almost 2 miles (but you can leave the park earlier if you are tired) in a definitely magical New York.

Da una parte, a ovest, il fiume Hudson ed il porto di Chelsea, dall'altra lo Skyline newyorkese.

In mezzo uffici, murales e non solo.

Troverete il lavoratore newyorkese che si rilassa in pausa pranzo, troverete chi legge un buon libro e troverete anche a metà del parco stesso diversi stand dove poter pranzare o cenare. O anche solo bere una birra.

You'll meet the worker which is having a break from work, you'll meet the student reading a good book and, in the middle of the park, even a lot of stands where you can have lunch or dinner. Or just drink a beer.

Essendo un parco relativamente nuovo (il primo tratto, a sud, fu aperto nel 2009, gli altri a seguire) ed allo stesso tempo relativamente poco conosciuto, vi permetterà un approccio a Manhattan decisamente diverso.

As a pretty new park (the first part was opened in 2009), and at the same time pretty unknown, it will give you a different perspective of Manhattan.

La sua posizione sopraelevata vi garantirà una visione privilegiata, tra fiori, arbusti, piante, qualche sdraio, diverse panchine ed ovviamente i binari ferroviari.

Its elevated location will ensure a privileged view among flowers, shrubs, plants, some chairs, several benches and of course the railroad tracks.

Noi l'abbiamo percorso da sud a nord, sino ad arrivare al tratto a "U" a ridosso della 34esima strada.

We've walked it from south to north, till reaching the "U" part close to the 34th street.

Non sarà la "gentrification", la gentrificazione, che ha permesso a Brooklyn di rinascere, ma anche qui è stato fatto un importante (e bellissimo) lavoro. Il perfetto recupero urbanistico dell'Highline area ha reso, di fatto, il parco molto sicuro e, complice la sua originalità, anche uno dei luoghi più amati dai turisti che l'hanno visitato.


Well, that's not the "gentrification" process which has allowed Brooklyn to become the very trendy, anyway a good job has been done even here. The urban renewal of the Highline Area has meant that the park is very safe and, thanks to its originality, also one of the most beloved places by tourists who have visited it.

Non è un caso, a parer nostro, che, nel momento in cui scriviamo, l'Highline Park occupi la posizione numero 8 nella classifica di tripadvisor tra i luoghi newyorkesi più apprezzati.

It is no coincidence, in our opinion, that at the time of this writing, the Highline Park occupies the position number 8 in the TripAdvisor ranking among New Yorkers most appreciated places.

Ah, ovviamente, Central Park rimane Central Park. Le immagini che vi regalerà l'enorme polmone verde nel cuore di Manhattan sono e rimarranno impareggiabili...

Well, obviously Central Park is still Central Park. The imagines which this park gives to you are (and will be) unmatched.

ma per una New York alternativa, originale e particolare, l'Highline Park è sicuramente tra i luoghi da battere.

But if you're looking for an alternative and particular New York, Highline park is definitely one of the places to beat.
