Luoghi da sogno: la nostra "top 20" (posizioni 20-16)

Un po' di carne al fuoco ormai l'abbiamo messa e, ripensando ai vari viaggi che abbiamo intrapreso, ci è sembrato il momento giusto per tracciare il primo bilancio delle nostre esperienze. Che tradotto significa provare a stilare una sorta di ranking, di classifica, dei venti luoghi che ci hanno regalato più emozioni. Una strada, un ponte, un'avventura, un edificio... insomma, sì, vale tutto, con la regola che, come sempre quando ci siamo noi coinvolti, noi siamo stravaganti ed è possibile che la nostra classifica non accontenti tutti. Anzi. Ovviamente il ranking sarà a forti tinte a stelle e strisce, ma anche qui è abbastanza scontato... La speranza è, come sempre, quella di poter esser d'aiuto, ricordando però ancora una volta che è molto, molto. molto, molto soggettiva. Enjoy!

Thinking back to the various trips we have done we felt it was the right time to translate our experiences in a ranking. It means try to draw up a sort of ranking of the top twenty places that have given us the best emotions. A road, a bridge, an adventure, a building ... well, yes,everything: the rule is this: we are extravagant and it is possible that our ranking could not match everyone's ranking. There will be, obviously, a lot of american places... 

POS. 20 - TRAMONTO AL TOWER BRIDGE/SUNSET AT TOWER BRIDGE

Camminare lungo il Tamigi e ammirare il Tower Bridge durante il tramonto è sicuramente la fotografia principale del week end appena speso a Londra. L'azzurro che domina non appena scende la sera, le tantissime persone che affollano le rive del Tamigi ed un ponte che già di suo regala un fascino particolare ci "obbligano" ad inserirlo nel nostro personalissimo cartellino.

Walking along the Thames river and admiring the Tower Bridge during sunset is definitely the main picture of the weekend we've just spent in London. Blue colour dominates when night falls, many people around the Thames and a bridge which has a special charm "force" us to put it in our own personal ranking.

POS. 19 - ACROPOLI ILLUMINATA/ ACROPOLIS ILLUMINATED

L'Acropoli è sempre l'Acropoli. E, anche se Atene non è tra le nostre città preferite, la vista che avevamo dal nostro hotel era davvero un qualcosa di incredibile. Certo, per ammirarla non c'è bisogno di alcuna vista dall'hotel, ma sorseggiare un buon thè caldo mentre scende il tramonto e l'Acropoli va illuminandosi... bhe non è poi così male.

Acropolis is always Acropolis. And, even if Athens is not our favourite cities, the view we had from our hotel was really something unbelievable. Of course, to admire acropolis you don't need any views from a hotel, but drink a hot tea at sunset while Acropolis is getting illuminated ... well, not so bad.

POS. 18 - PARCO NAZIONALE DELLE BADLANDS/BADLANDS NP

Il parco nazionale delle Badlands, situato a ridosso delle Black Hills (South Dakota, centro nord degli Stati Uniti) è un qualcosa di unico nel suo genere. Si estende per 98mila ettari in un paesaggio surreale: dal verde delle collinette e delle praterie delle Black Hills verrete in un amen catapultati in un paesaggio lunare... e già dal nome, Badlands appunto (terre cattive), s'intuisce che non è un posto come un altro. Il paesaggio erode ad una velocità di un centimetro all'anno, fornendo un panorama paesaggistico in continua evoluzione. Sì, lo sappiamo che non è la prima meta che vi viene in mente se state progettando un viaggio negli Stati Uniti e che è fuori dalle rotte tradizionali, ma merita davvero una visita. 

The Badlands National Park, located on the edge of the Black Hills (South Dakota, north of the United States) is something unique. It stretches for 98 thousand hectares in a surreal landscape: from the green hills and grasslands of the Black Hills you will be catapulted into a lunar landscape ... and from his name, Badlands, we can guess that it is not a place as any other. The landscape erodes at a speed of one centimeter per year, providing a scenic landscape in continuous evolution. Yes, we know that is not the first destination that comes to your mind if you are planning a trip and that Badlands are outside the traditional routes, but they reaaly worth a visit.

POS. 17 - RILASSARSI NEL MAR MORTO/RELAXING INTO THE DEAD SEA

Nel cuore del deserto palestinese, a 415 metri sotto il livello del mare, il Mar Morto è uno di quei luoghi che, almeno una volta della vita, va vissuto. La sua salinità è 8 volte quella degli oceani e, un bagno nelle sue acque, sarà un'esperienza unica. L'enorme quantità salina vi terrà a galla e, dopo un veloce bagno (non più di 10 minuti) vi ritroverete con la pelle simile a quella di un bambino.

In the heart of the Palestinian desert, 415 meters below sea level, the Dead Sea is one of those places that, at least once in life, should be visited. Its salinity is 8 times more than the oceans one, and a swim in its waters will be a unique experience. The huge amount of salt will keep you afloat and after a quick bath (not more than 10 minutes) your skin will be as smooth as that of a child.

POS. 16 - AMMIRARE LE BALENE A P-TOWN/WHALE WATCHING IN P-TOWN

Quando parliamo della regione del New England (geograficamente nord est degli Stati Uniti) le prime due cose che ci vengono alla mente sono le aragoste e le... balene. E se volete ammirarle da vicino, la penisola di Cape Cod (Massachusetts) è il posto migliore. In particolar modo la punta dell'uncino, Province Town, da dove ogni giorno partono tantissimi battelli che vi porteranno ad una manciata di metri da questi enormi animali. Ah quando non appena sarete saliti sul battello vi daranno una pastiglia per lo stomaco, fidatevi... prendetela!

If you think about New England (geographically northeast of the United States) the first two things that come to your mind are lobsters and whales .... And if you want to do whale watching, the peninsula of Cape Cod (Massachusetts) is the best place. Especially Province Town, where every day many boats take you really close to the whales. Oh, on the boat the crew will give you pill for stomach, trust us ... take it!

Luoghi da sogno: la nostra "top 20" (posizioni 15-11)

POS. 15 - MUSICAL A BROADWAY/MUSICAL IN BROADWAY

Di Times Square tutti sanno sostanzialmente tutto e non c'è certamente bisogno di noi per raccontare le luci, le persone, il caos che regnano sovrani in una delle aree più famose al mondo. Siamo a New York City, nel cuore di Manhattan, ma non è qui che vogliamo portarvi, anche perchè a dirla tutta Times Square non è che sia proprio in cima alla nostra lista, anzi. Nei pressi di Times Square, infatti, troviamo il tratto sicuramente più famoso della Broadway, una lunghissima Avenue che vi porta sostanzialmente da nord a sud della grande mela. Dovrebbe bastare il nome, famoso in tutto il mondo, per non dover aggiungere altro. L'estate scorsa abbiamo avuto la fortuna, grazie ai nostri amici americani Alex&Paul, di assistere alla rappresentazione del Re Leone, un'esperienza unica.

Basically everyone knows everything about Times Square and you don't certainly need us to tell about lights, people and the mess you'll find in one of the most famous square in the world. We are in New York City, in the heart of Manhattan, but we don't want to take you to Times Square, also because, to be honest, Times Square is not at the top of our list. Near Times Square, in fact, there is the stretch definitely most famous of Broadway, a long Avenue that susbantially cut from north to south the Big Apple. His name is famous throughout the world, we do not have to add something more. Last summer we had the good fortune, thanks to our American friends Alex & Paul, to attend the performance of the Lion King, a unique experience.

STATE: NEW YORK - UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

CITY: NEW YORK CITY

POS. 14 - CUMBRES & TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD

Sì, lo sappiamo. Sarete in tanti a prenderci in giro e a pensare che questo ranking possa perdere di valore. Come è possibile che un giro sul treno possa essere addirittura alla numero 14? E' possibile, fidatevi. Anzi, se fosse stato per Marco avrebbe anche meritato la top ten. Ma andiamo con ordine, Ancora Stati Uniti, ma questa volta cambiamo completamente location, siamo a sud.ovest, al confine tra il New Mexico ed il Colorado, nella cittadina di Chama. Qui, ogni mattina  parte il treno a vapore tra i più belli al mondo, un tremo che vi porterà sino ad Antonito (Colorado) lungo 103 chilometri di magia. Già, perchè i panorami sono mozzafiato e sarete obbligati a tornare con la mente indietro di più di cento anni, a quando (nel 1880) fu costruita per supportare i minatori che operavano lungo le montagne di San Juan. 

Yes, we know. Many of you will make fun of us and think that this ranking may lose value. How is it possible that a ride on a train could be at the number 14? It's 'possible, trust us.  We still are into the United States, but this time we change completely location, south-west, between New Mexico and Colorado, in the town of Chama. Here, every morning a steam train (one of the most beautiful in the world) take you up to Antonito (Colorado) along 103 km of magic. Yes, because the views are stunning and you will be forced to go with your mind back over a hundred years, when (in 1880) was built to support the miners who operated along the San Juan Mountains.

STATE: NEW MEXICO - UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

CITY: CHAMA

POS. 13: IL CASTELLO DI NEUSCHWAINSTEIN/NEUSCHWAINSTEIN CASTLE

Cambiamo continente e torniamo in Europa. Baviera, bassa Baviera, vicinissimi sia al confine austriaco che a quello svizzero. Siamo a Schwangau, in uno dei castelli probabilmente più affascinanti al mondo, Quello di Neuschweinstein, fatto costruire alla fine del diciannovesimo secolo da Re Ludovico, è talmente bello che... anche Walt Disney lo prese a modello per alcuni dei suoi più celebri film d'animazione come La spada nella roccia e La Bella addormentata nel Bosco. Il castello è stato uno dei finalisti per entrare a far parte delle sette meraviglie del mondo.

Let's switch continent and fly back to Europe. Bavaria, Lower Bavaria, very close to the Austrian and Swiss border. We are in Schwangau, in one of the most fascinating castles in the world, Neuschweinstein castle, built in the late nineteenth century by King Ludwig. It is as beautiful as ... Walt Disney took it as a model for some of his most famous movies as Snow White, Cinderella and sleeping Beauty. The castle was one of the finalists to become a part of the seven wonders of the world.

POS. 12 - IL GOLDEN GATE/THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE

E' uno dei simboli non solo di San Francisco, ma probabilmente degli interi Stati Uniti. Parliamo ovviamente del Golden Gate, il lunghissimo ponte (2 chilometri e 710 metri!) che sovrasta l'omonimo stretto che collega l'oceano pacifico con la Baia di San Francisco. Già di per sè San Francisco è una città tra le più belle al mondo, il Golden Gate probabilmente è la ciliegina sulla torta... Ah dovete essere molto fortunati e trovare una delle poche giornate di sole per poter vedere dall'altra parte del ponte. E' più facile invece che la nebbia lo avvolga, ma tutto sommato ha il suo fascino anche così. Noi, una volta tanto, siamo stati fortunatissimi...

It's a symbol not only of San Francisco, but probably of the entire United States. We are talking of course about the Golden Gate, the very long bridge (2 km and 710 meters!) Overlooking the homonymous strait that connects the Pacific Ocean with the San Francisco Bay. San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and the Golden Gate is probably the icing on the cake ... Well, you have to be very lucky and find one of the few sunny days to be able to see the other side of the bridge. It's easier instead that fog wraps it, but all in all it has its charm even in a foggy day That time we were very lucky ...

STATE: CALIFORNIA - UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

CITY: SAN FRANCISCO

POS. 11 - WILLIS TOWER AND JOHN HANCOCK OBSERVATORY

Chicago, Illinois. Siamo sempre negli Stati Uniti, in un'altra città che da sola vale un viaggio a stelle e strisce. La Willis Tower o Sears Tower, che dal 1973 al 1998 è stata l'edificio più alto al mondo con i suoi 527 metri (447 se non si considerano le antenne televisive posizionate all'estremità) ed anche il luogo che ha provocato i maggiori brividi a Marco. Già, perchè al 103esimo piano, nello Skydeck, avrete un'incredibile visuale sulla città. Ma per coloro che amano il brivido appunto, una balconata di vetro che si estende per qualche metro, vi permetterà a di trovarvi a quasi 500 metri dal suolo...con il solo vetro a proteggervi. Marco tremava, l'Ale invece, come sempre, era a suo agio. Il John Hancock Center è l'altro grattacielo famoso di Chicago. Il nostro consiglio è quello di salire sulla Willis Tower, ma spendere la serata al John Hancock. Il motivo? Al 96esimo piano troverete il Signature Lounge: da qui avrete una visuale unica della Chicago di notte: da una parte la città, dall'altra il lago Michigan.

Chicago, Illinois. We are always in the US, another city that worth a trip. Willis Tower or Sears Tower, which from 1973 to 1998 was the tallest building in the world with its 527 meters (447 if you do not consider the television antennas positioned at the top) and also the place that caused the greatest thrills to Marco. Yes, because at the 103rd floor, at the Skydeck you will have an incredible view of the city. But for those who love the thrill, a glass balcony that stretches for a few meters, will allow you to to stay at almost 500 meters above the ground ... and just the glass is protecting you! POSITION 10 - MOUNT RUSHMORE

Chissà quante volte vi sarà capitato di vedere associato agli Stati Uniti i famosi "faccioni" e vi sarete chiesti... "ma dove si trovano"? Esistono, ve lo assicuriamo, ma parliamo di una zona impervia da raggiungere, persino dagli americani stessi. Non ci sono grandi città, non ci sono grandissime infrastrutture o aereoporti internazionali nei dintorni, ma lungo le "black hills", esattamente nella cittadina di Keystone, nel South Dakota (centro nord degli Stati Uniti) c'è una splendida montagna, teatro di questa scultura che risale ai primi del 900' (dal 1927 al 1941). Vi sono raffigurati quatto presidenti americani, Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt e Lincoln e più di 2 milioni di visitatori ogni anno accorrono per ammirarli, nonostante non sia un luogo facilissimo da raggiungere. Percorrendo la Iron Mountain, dopo un piccolo tunnel, il Mount Rushmore comparirà davanti a voi... e li capirete che "this is the place"

STATE: SOUTH DAKOTA - UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

CITY: KEYSTONE

Who knows how many times have you seen the famous connection between Mount Rushmore and the United States. Maybe you were wondering ... "where is this sculpture"? We are talking about an area not so easy to reach, even by the Americans. There are no large cities, there are no great infrastructure and international airports around it, but along the "black hills", exactly in the town of Keystone, South Dakota (center north of the United States) there is a beautiful mountain, home of this sculpture, built from 1927 and 1941. There are four former US presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln, and more than 2 million visitors every year come to admire them, although it is not a place easy to reach. Along the Iron Mountain, after a small tunnel, Mount Rushmore will appear in front of you: in that moment you realize that "this is the place".

POSITION 9: FOUR CORNERS NATIONAL MONUMENT AND GOOSENECKS STATE PARK



E' il luogo che più ci ha messo in difficoltà e di conseguenza la posizione su cui abbiamo discusso più a lungo. E c'è voluto un bel po' per far sì che l'ale convincesse Marco che il Four Corners National Monument non solo meritasse un posto nella top 20, ma addirittura al numero 9... Alla fine ci è riuscita, ma con un compromesso: a pochi chilometri di distanza c'è il Goosenecks State Park, li abbiamo uniti per accontentare sostanzialmente entrambi.


This is the place that has created more problems... we really discussed longer about it and its position in our ranking. And it took a lot to convince Marco that Four Corners National Monument not only deserved a place in the top 20, but even at number 9 ... In the end we've found a compromise: a few kilometers far from the Four Corners there is the Goosenecks State Park, we pushed them together...

FOUR CORNERS NATIONAL MONUMENT

Se siete tra quelli che in questo momento state pensando che si tratti una sostanziale "pagliacciata", beh la vostra teoria ha diritto di cittadinanza. Ma se ogni giorno questo monumento nel cuore del deserto americano accoglie centinaia e centinaia di turisti un motivo ci sarà. E allora immaginatevi se qui da noi esistesse un punto in cui, a seconda di dove posizionate il vostro piede, potreste finire in Italia, oppure in Francia, oppure ancora in Svizzera o Austria. Chi di voi non ci andrebbe? Ecco, questa è una scena che ai Four Corners si ripete giorno dopo giorno, con i turisti che si prodigano in foto immaginifiche per immortalarsi contemporaneamente in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado e Utah.

If you are among those who right now are thinking that this is a substantial "tomfoolery", well your theory could be right. But if every day this monument in the heart of the American desert welcomes hundreds and hundreds of tourists there is a reason. Then, imagine if a point at which, depending on where you place your foot, you could end up in Italy, or France, or even in Switzerland or Austria. W Well, this is a scene that happens at the Four Corners, day after day, with tourists who are working in weird pictures taken at the same time in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah.

Ad essere onesti non sappiamo quanti luoghi del genere esistano sulla faccia della terra, ma immaginiamo possa essere una rarità. E se vi troverete da queste parti è perchè avete affrontato, o state per affrontare, la Monument Valley: motivo per cui la deviazione di qualche miglio lungo il deserto del sud ovest americano non vi peserà.

Honestly we don't know how many places like this exist on earth, but we guess this is a rarity. And if you are in this area of the United States, it's because you have faced, or you are about to face, the Monument Valley: that's why the deviation of a few miles across the desert of the American southwest won't be a problem.

Se fosse stato "fuori rotta" certamente non l'avremmo neppure presa in considerazione. Ah, si paga l'entrata e in questo luogo, gestito dagli indiani Navajo, sarà anche possibile acquistare oggetti prodotti dai nativi. E potrete scegliere anche in quale stato fare acquisti, a seconda di quale bancarella sceglierete per il vostro shopping.

If it had been "off course" certainly we would not have even considered in our "top 10". Oh, you pay the entrance fee and in this place, run by the Navajo Indians, you can also purchase items produced by the natives. And you can also choose the state, depending on which stand you choose for your shopping.

GOOSENECKS STATE PARK

Ci spostiamo di una manciata di chilometri e torniamo anche seri. Il Goosenecks State Park, fratellino del più famoso (e probabilmente più bello, ma ve lo diremo la prossima estate) Horseshoe bend, è un canyon che si trova nello stato dello Utah, a ridosso del confine con l'Arizona. Sotto vi scorre il San Juan river, che dà anche il nome alla contea. Preso a certe ore del giorno (per intenderci al tramonto) potrebbe regalarvi colori incredibili.

We move just a handful of miles and back even serious. The Goosenecks State Park, brother of the more famous (and probably the most beautiful, but we'll tell you next summer) Horseshoe bend, is a canyon located in the state of Utah, near the Arizona border. At the bottom of the canyon you will see the San Juan river, which also gives its name to the county. At sunset colours are really amazing...

POSITION 8: EVERGLADES & OVERSEAS HIGHWAY

Andiamo in Florida, dove al numero otto troviamo due luoghi, vicinissimi tra loro, che sono un must quando vi trovate in queste latitudini. Perchè il "Sunshine State" non è soltanto Miami e le sue spiagge, c'è molto altro, ma non è certamente una novità... E proprio ad un'ora da Miami c'è il parco nazionale delle eveglades, un'immensa palude (e pensate che il parco copre solamente il 20% dell'area) dove a dominare sono i "gators", gli alligatori, uno dei simboli dell'intera Florida.

Let's go to Florida, where at number eight there are two places close to each other, which are a must when you are in these latitudes. Because the "Sunshine State" is not only Miami and its beaches, there is much more of course ... And just an hour from Miami there is the Everglades National Park, a huge swamp (the park covers only 20% of the area) where you can find the "gators" one of the symbols of the entire Florida, and other species of animals.

Arrivare a ridosso del parco e salire su uno degli airboat che vi porterà nel cuore della palude è un'esperienza decisamente affascinante.

Ovviamente per l'avvistamento della fauna che caratterizza le Everglades ci  vuol sempre un po' di fortuna anche se, almeno i gators, sono sostanzialmente ovunque nelle bassissime acque delle Everglades.

Obviously you have to be lucky to see all the animals that caracterize this area.

Lasciate le Everglades e procedendo verso sud, in direzione Key West, vi troverete ad affrontare una delle dieci strade più belle e famose al mondo. Parliamo ovviamente dei 205 chilomentri Overseas Highway, un prolungamento della Us Route 1, che vi porterà dritti fino a Key West attraversando le isole Keys.

Leaving the Everglades and heading towards Key West, you will face one of the ten most beautiful and famous road in the world. We are talking of course about the 205 kilometers of the Overseas Highway, an extension of the US Route 1, which will take you straight to Key West through the Florida Keys.

Non tutti i 200 chilometri sono affascinanti, va detto, ma quando rimarrete solo voi, la strada e il mare (l'oceano atlantico da una parte, il golfo del Messico dall'altra) il tempo volerà. e tra un'isola e l'altra arriverete fino a Key West, la punta più bassa degli interi Stati Uniti, a due passi da Cuba. In sottofondo lo splendido cielo azzurro della Florida...

Not all the 200 kilometers are fascinating, it must be said, but when you will be just you, the road and the sea (the Atlantic Ocean on one side, the Gulf of Mexico on the other), time will fly and it'll be an amazing experience till Key West, the lowest point of the entire United States, a few steps from Cuba. Of course the Florida blue-sky is on the background...
