New York City, Cape Cod and... "The Real America" (day 13)

La seconda giornata a Yellowstone la dedichiamo alla parte meridionale dell'ormai famoso "8" che caratterizza il parco che stiamo visitando. Entrando da sinistra (west entrance), ovvero da West Yellowstone e arrivati al "junction" di Madison scendiamo verso la parte sud, quella caratterizzata dai geyser e dalle hot springs. Nel racconto precedente ci siamo dimenticati alcune preziose info, recuperiamo subito: l'ingresso al National Park di Yellowstone costa 25 dollari a vettura ed ha validità di una settimana (decisamente economico) e la temperatura all'interno del parco ad agosto consente tranquillamente la visita in maglietta. Consigliamo però di indossare felpa se decideste di avventurarvi già al mattino presto per ammirare un po' di wildlife...

The second day in Yellowstone is dedicated to the southern part of the famous "8". Entering from the left (west entrance, West Yellowstone) and arrived at the "junction" of Madison, we go to the south, an area characterized by geysers and hot springs. We've forgotten some valuable info, so we recover immediately: the entrance to Yellowstone National Park costs $ 25 per vehicle and it is valid for one week (very cheaper), and the temperature inside the park allows you to easily wear a t-shirt during summer time.  However, we recommend to wear sweatshirt if you decide to stay into the park early in the morning to enjoy wildlife ... 

Lungo il Lower Geyser Basin incrociamo un'area che nella nostra personalissima classifica merita un posto tra i primi 4, il Fountain Paint Pot. Capiamo immediatamente che si tratta di qualcosa d'interessante poichè il parcheggio già alle 9.30 è strapieno. Ah, armatevi di pazienza. Non abbiam mai visto così tanti turisti come a Yellowstone.

Along the Lower Geyser Basin, an area that in our personal ranking deserves a place among the top 4, we stop at the Fountain Paint Pot. Immediately we understand that this is something interesting because the car parking is already full at 9.30 am.

Percorriamo il consueto trail lungo il boardwalk, ammirando le varie hot springs che caratterizzano l'area del Paint Pot.

ed è incredibile come sia diversa la vegetazione tra un'area in cui sono presenti le hot springs ed un'altra dove non vi sono tracce di piscine...

and it's amazing how different the vegetation is in an area where there are a lot of hot springs comparing to another one where there are no traces of pools ... 

A due passi ci sarebbe anche la grande attrazione (o almeno una delle due grandi attrazioni) del parco, il Grand Prismatic, ma decidiamo per il momento di evitarlo con l'intenzione di dedicargli l'intera mattinata successiva. Proseguiamo verso la parte più a sud dell'8", dove affiorano i primi geyser...

A few steps away there is also the big attraction (or at least one of the two major attractions) of the park, the Grand Prismatic hot spring, but we decide to avoid it for the moment: our intention is to dedicate the entire next morning to this beautiful hot spring. We continue towards the south part of the "8", where we see the first geyser of the day... 

e soprattutto c'è lui, l'Old faithful, il "vecchio fedele", uno dei geyser più grandi e famosi al mondo.

Siamo fortunatissimi. Arriviamo proprio qualche minuto prima che il geyser erutti e lo capiamo dalla mole di turisti pronta a ad immortalare l'evento (se volete esser sicuri di arrivare per tempo recatevi ai vari visitor center lungo il parco e chiedete). L'eruzione è imponente, l'altezza supera i 50 metri...

We are very lucky. The Old Faithful is about to erupt in few minutes: there are a lot of tourists that are ready for this amazing show of nature (if you want to be sure to arrive on time, head to the various visitor center along the park and ask). The eruption is impressive, the height exceeds 50 meters ... 

Nell'Old Faithful area ce ne sono diversi di geyser, ma la lunghezza dei percorsi come sempre ci ferma e decidiamo di effettuare solo un brevissimo trail lungo il fiume...

In the Old Faithful area there are many geyser, but trails are too long and, as always, we decide to do just one small trail along the river.

Siamo a sud-est del parco, nella zona del West Thumb Geyser Basin.

We are in the south-east area of the park, near the West Thumb Geyser Basin.

Noi non abbiamo visto orsi durante i quattro giorni spesi a Yellowstone (bisogna avere molta fortuna, o sfortuna... a seconda di come la si vede), ci dobbiamo accontentare delle orme sul pavimento...

We haven't seen bears during the four days spent in Yellowstone (you need a lot of luck, or bad luck ... depending on how you see it), but we have seen footprints on the floor...

E' il grande giorno. Finalmente stiamo per vedere il Grand Prismatic, il simbolo dell'intero parco di Yellowstone. Ancora una volta siamo nella zona a sud-ovest del parco, quella delle hot springs. E che hot springs...


Today is the big day, Finally we are going to see the famous Grand Prismatic, the symbol of the entire park of Yellowstone. Once again we are in the south-west area of the park, where there are many hot springs. Beautiful hot springs...

Attraversiamo il fiume e finalmente siamo a contatto con uno degli spettacoli naturali più incantevoli, almeno a livello di colori. Sì, è proprio lui...

We cross the river and finally we are near one of the most beautiful natural spectacles, at least in terms of colors. Yes, that's it!

Percorriamo il boardwalk che ci porta sempre più vicino al cuore del Grand Prismatic...

Per una volta tanto bastano le immagini, bastano...e avanzano!

Siamo letteralmente sopraffatti da questi colori. Uno spettacolo con pochi eguali sulla faccia della terra. E anche il panorama, dal boardwalk, si lascia guardare.

We are literally overwhelmed by these colors. One of the best natural show on the earth. And the view from the boardwalk is also awsome.

Però, c'è un però... Leggendo i vari diari di viaggio avevamo scoperto l'esistenza di una collinetta per poterlo ammirare anche dall'alto. Lasciamo dunque il Prismatic, ma solo momentaneamente, e ci mettiamo alla ricerca della "famosa" collinetta che abbiamo già intuito essere dietro la hot springs.

However, there is a "but" ... Reading the various travel diaries we discovered the existence of a small hill that let you see the Grand Prismatic from the top. So we are looking for this hill and we suppose it's behind the Grand Prismatic.

In sostanza basta parcheggiare meno di un chilometro a sud del prismatic e seguire un percorso sterrato di 500 metri che vi porterà sopra la hot spring. Lungo il tragitto sarete accompagnati da altre piccole piscinette...

Basically just park less than a mile south of the prismatic and follow a dirt path that will take you 500 meters above the huge hot spring. Along the way you will find other small pools ...

Si deve faticare un pochino per salire, ma poi il premio sarà una vista spettacolare.

The climb is a little bit strenous, but then...

Non mancano i "soliti" asiatici, ma riusciamo a trovare lo spazio necessario per fare le classiche foto di rito...

Soddisfatti dopo la lunga visita al Grand Prismatic non ci resta che concludere l'"8" di yellowstone con la zona a centro-nord est, quella del Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

Satisfied after the long visit to the Grand Prismatic we can just finish the "8" with the north east area: the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

Abbiamo ancora un paio d'orette da spendere nel parco e ci dirigiamo in una zona balneare (a sud della west entrance, ben segnata nelle cartine), ma non bella come quella di due giorni prima. Ci sono tantissimi turisti e lasciamo tutto in auto, ma avremo tutto l'occorrente per immortalare l'ultima cenaa West Yellowstone, dove perdiamo un attimino la bussola e tra nachos e costolette usciamo tanto pieni...

We still have a couple of hours to spend in the park and so we decide to go to a bathing area (south of the west entrance, well marked in the maps), but not as beautiful as the first day. There are many tourists and we are forced to leave everything in the car. The last dinner in West Yellowstone is very, very heavy: nachos and ribs.... we are as full ...

New York City, Cape Cod and... "The Real America" (Day 15)

Ultimo giorno nel bellissimo parco di Yellowstone, giornata che diventerà per lo più una tappa di trasferimento. Facciamo la nostra ultima colazione yellowstoniana, questa volta molto più leggera, vista la pienezza che ci portavamo dietro dalla sera prima, a base di latte, cereali e pane tostato con marmellata.

The last day in the awesome park of Yellowstone, it will become mostly a transfer stage. 
We have our last breakfast, this time much lighter then the others we had in the past days, because of al the thing we ate the day before are still inside us: milk, cereals and toast with jam. 

Per l'ultima volta attraversiamo l'ingresso ovest del parco e decidiamo che prima di affrontare tutti quei chilometri che ci separano da Jackson, sede della tappa odierna, ci meritiamo ancora un po' di relax. Torniamo quindi al boiling river! E' una mattinata calda e soleggiata, un'oretta in quell'acqua e siamo rigenerati. Mentre torniamo verso la nostra auto passiamo di fianco ad una mandria di cervi che si abbevera nel fiume... caspita, li abbiamo proprio a due passi da noi! Che spettacolo..corriamo alla macchina per prendere la macchina fotografica, non possiamo non immortalare quel momento!

For the last time we go through the west entrance of the park and we decide that before dealing with all those miles, we deserve a little bit of relax into the boiling river! It 'a warm and sunny morning, an hour in that water, and are regenerated.  While are coming back to the car we pass next to a herd of deer drinking from the river, wow, they are so close to us! We have to get our camera!

Si sta facendo tardi e la strada per arrivare a Jackson è lunghetta, considerato anche che lungo il tragitto troveremo dei lavori ed i soliti rallentamenti, ci mettiamo in macchina, via con la nostra musica e...fermi: i lavori vogliono che il nostro senso di marcia sia fermo e approfittiamo per pranzare con la nostra banana e il toast con marmellata che avevamo portato via a colazione! Ci fa compagnia la solita wildlife che ci guarda come se volesse dire... "e noi niente?"

It's getting late and the road to reach Jackson is long, also considering that along the way we will find roadworks and slowdowns. We get in the car, our music is ready ... and STOP: the roadworks are stopping our direction of travel so we have time to lunch with our banana and toast with jam that we had taken for breakfast! With us a lot of wildlife and it seems that they are saying "anything for us?"

Finalmente ripartiamo e dopo tante miglia arriviamo all'uscita sud di Yellowstone. Stiamo guidando verso il Grand Teton National Park, il fratellino di Yellowstone (ingresso: lo stesso tkt di Yellowstone): per molti è imperdibile, per altri da attraversare in un paio d'ore. Noi ci inseriamo nella seconda categoria, ma per il semplice fatto che con le alpi a due passi non subiamo lo stesso fascino che potrebbero subire invece altri turisti. Detto questo, se avete tempo, prendete la barca lungo il Jenny Lake e fate l'escursione! Ah ovviamente parliamo comunque in un parco, il Grand Teton, dove colori, wildlife e conformazione orografica restano al top.

Finally we can leave and, after tons of miles we reach the south entrance of Yellowstone. We are driving to the Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone's little brother (admission: the same tkt used for Yellowstone): for many it is a must, for others just a fast cross in a couple of hours. We are in to the second category, but for the simple fact that we have Alps here in the north of Italy... But if you have time, take the boat down the Jenny Lake and take the tour! Of course we are talking about  a park, Grand Teton, where colors, wildlife, and orographic remain at the top level.

Inizia anche a piovere..a dirotto! Decidiamo quindi di attraversare il parco senza particolari stop, facendo però con l'auto le varie deviazioni indicate. Sono ormai le 18 e finalmente arriviamo a Jackson, dove una volta trovato il motel ci aspetta una sorpresa: il check in va fatto da un'altra parte! Impostiamo il nuovo indirizzo sul GPS e arriviamo in un altro hotel dove un signore ci da le chiavi della nostra camera e ci da le solite indicazioni su colazione e check out! Torniamo dunque al nostro Motel, ma le sorprese non sono finite! La camera cade a pezzi: un letto ad una piazza e mezza, le prese di corrente che non funzionano, la TV rotta, il WiFi che non va e il lavandino (di fianco al letto) fa dei gorgoglii ogni qualvolta dalle altre camere qualcuno tiri lo sciacquone... 95€ di camera (tre le più economiche in città) ovviamente non li merita. E se ci lamentiamo noi vuol dire che proprio non ci siamo....

Siamo però affamati (non mangiamo in pratica dalla colazione) e dopo qualche tentennamento optiamo per una steak house: abbiamo voglia di hamburger e prendiamo un chili burger (ricordando quanto fossero buoni quelli in New Mexico), ma quello che arriva è questo...

It starts raining! So we decide to drive through the park with no particular stops, however doing the various car-deviations indicated. It's 6 pm and finally we arrive in Jackson, where once found the hotel we have a surprise: check in must be done somewhere else! We set the new address on the GPS and arrive to another hotel where a man gives us the keys of our room and the usual indications for breakfast and check out! We go back to our Motel, but surprises are not over! The room falls apart: a small bed, the power that do not work, the TV broken, the WiFi is wrong and the sink (next to the bed) makes the gurgling every time someone from the other rooms goes to the restrom... 95dollars for this room... and it was one of the most cheaper in town!

However, we are hungry, take a chili burger (remember how much good they were in New Mexico), but what we get is this... 

La carne è ottima, ma il piatto è pesantissimo..lo finiamo a fatica e una volta usciti andiamo in centro per fare due passi e le solite foto di rito

It was delicious, but very very heavy. We can't even finish it, impossible!. After this dinner we would like to collapse, but we have to walk: it's the only way to digest...

No, Jackson non è la nostra città preferita, anzi. Avevamo letto e sentito grandi cose, di come fosse la classica città western. Ma per noi che amiamo il country (non solo la musica...) è troppo turistica. Tutto costruito su misura per il turista...e per i suoi soldi. Per noi il west è Chama, tanto per fare un nome, la graziosa cittadina incontrata lo scorso anno in New Mexico...

Ma prima di tornare in camera cerchiamo anche un minimarket per prendere un digestivo, e nel buio di quelle stradine secondarie vediamo la stella cadente più bella e luminosa che abbiamo mai visto, davvero incredibile! Non una giornata indimenticabile, ma che finale!

No, Jackson is not our favorite city. We had read and heard great things about Jackson, like the classic Western town. But for us who love country things (not just the music ...) is too touristy. All custom built for tourists ... and for their money. For us, the west is for example Chama, just to say a name, the pretty town met last year in New Mexico ... 

But before returning to the room, while we are looking for a small supermarket to pick up a digestive, in the darkness of the side streets we see the most beautiful and bright shooting star we've ever seen, really amazing! Not an unforgettable day, but what a finish!
