2016 trip - Route 66, Hawaii, Seattle and much more (day 13: Holbrook - Seligman)

Di per sé la tappa di oggi non sarebbe lunghissima ma, come ormai è noto, una volta entrati in Arizona non si può davvero non restare ammaliati dalla natura probabilmente più bella degli Stati Uniti. E così, anche per noi, i chilometri diventano più di 500, smistati in egual misura tra la historical route 66 e i parchi del centro dello stato.

Today's stage isn't very long, just 130 miles. Anyway, as you perfectly know, once in Arizona you'll be enchanted by would not be long but, as is now known, once in Arizona you can not really not be enchanted by probably the most beautiful nature in the entire United States. 130 miles will soon become more than 300...

Si dice che non si possa realmente dire di essere stati nel vecchio e selvaggio west se non si è fatto visita almeno una volta nella vita al Jack Rabbit Trading post. Siamo nella cittadina di Joseph City. Qui il deserto dell'Arizona è imponente, mentre a fianco della route 66 corre veloce la Highway 40. Chi passa da qui sale sul dorso del coniglio che è posto nel parcheggio e poi, ovviamente, fa visita al Trading Post per acquistare i soliti immancabili cimeli della route 66.

A legend says that you cannot really say "i have been to the old wild west" if you have not visited, at least once in a lifetime, the Jack Rabbit Trading Post located in the town of Joseph City, Arizona. Here the Arizona desert is impressive, while next to the route 66 runs the fastest Highway 40. Who comes here can't miss the climb on the back of the rabbit which is placed in the parking lot and then, of course, a visit to the Trading Post. There are many things connected to the route 66 in this shop!

E, che questa sia una strada magica, lo conferma il fatto che per la quarta volta incrociamo i nostri amici australiani. E' incredibile come, nonostante le nostre strade si siano divise diversi giorni prima, la "strada madre" ci ricongiunga sempre. Intuiamo che sfidare il destino ancora sarebbe stato un tantinello esagerato, o forse siamo consapevoli noi tutti che la vera route, quella poco turistica, finisca qui e che ritrovarsi d'ora in poi sarebbe stato complicato. E' il momento di una foto ricordo con i nostri amici australiani, uno dei tanti regali ricevuti da un viaggio indimenticabile.

The historical route 66 is a magical highway. It's amazing the fact that we meet our "australian friends" for the fourth time here at the Jack Rabbit Trading Post. It's also incredible how, despite our travel plans are very different, the "mother road" always rejoins us. We have the feeling that this could be the last time or perhaps we are all aware that the real route 66 ends here. It's a weird situation, we all know that this will definitely be the last time and we have to do something. And there isn't anything better than a souvenir picture, one of the many gifts we've received from this unforgettable trip.

Riprendiamo la marcia e con loro raggiungiamo la tappa successiva, Winslow. diventata famosa grazie alla canzone "take it easy" degli Eagles. Nella seconda strofa il verso recita "Well, I'm a-standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and such a fine sight to see. It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin' down to take a look at me.". Nella canzone il protagonista era fermo in un angolo, a Winslow, Arizona. E anche noi siamo qui, "standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona".

With them we reach the next stage, Winslow. Just the time to say goodbye and we're ready to visit one of the most famous places of the mother road. It became famous thanks to the popular song "Take It Easy" written by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey and performed by the Eagles. by the Eagles. The city had suffered a loss of commerce when U.S. Route 66 was supplanted by Interstate 40, but the popularity of the song led to renewed attention for Winslow and a commercial renaissance. The song includes the verse "Well, I'm a standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and such a fine sight to see. It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin' down to take a look at me"

E questo angolo di strada lungo la route 66 (ora situato nel standin' on the corner park) è diventato famoso, anzi famosissimo. Almeno quattro negozi sono legati alla canzone, agli Eagles ed al "standing on the corner" ed è stata addirittura realizzata una statua in bronzo di un chitarrista e un murale che ricordano l'episodio citato nella canzone. La statua si trova in prossimità dello Standin' On The Corner Park e, proprio nel centro dell'incrocio, dipinto sull'asfalto c'è il simbolo più grande della route 66 che troverete lungo il tragitto.

This street corner on the route 66 (now located within the Standin' on the corner park) has become famous, very famous. At least four stores are related to the song, to the Eagles and to the "standing on the corner". In 1999, in responding to the lyrics that made it well-known, the city of Winslow erected a life-size bronze statue and mural commemorating the song at the Standin' on the corner park. Right in the center of the intersection, painted on the asphalt, there is also the biggest symbol of the route 66.

Salutiamo gli australiani e torniamo a correre verso ovest, fermandoci alla Twin Arrows Trading Post che notiamo essere ormai in totale abbandono...

... e, decidendo solo all'ultimo di evitare l'appuntamento con le chocolate falls, le cascate di cioccolato, situate lungo una strada sterrata a Leupp, nord della route 66. Attraversiamo anche Winona perchè, a proposito di canzoni, "don't forget Winona" dice la storica canzone sulla route.

... and, deciding in the end to skip the chocolate falls, located along a dirt road in Leupp, north of Route 66. We cross Winona just because "don't forget Winona "says the route 66 song.

Una volta raggiunto il cuore dell'Arizona potrete davvero sbizzarrirvi a livello di natura. A nord, tra gli altri, ci sono il Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, l'Antelope Canyon, la Monument Valley e, poco più in su, i primi parchi dello Utah (Bryce Canyon, Zion e Grand Escalante National Monument). A sud c'è la splendida Sedona, la cittadina di Tombstone dove poter ammirare il vecchio west al suo meglio e, a nord di Tucson, il Saguaro National Park. Noi, avendoli visti tutti questi luoghi, dobbiamo cercare qualcosa di alternativo. E quindi puntiamo dritto al "canyon nocciola", il Walnut Canyon National Monument, una decina di miglia a sud est di Flagstaff.

Once you reach the heart of Arizona, there are endless natural possibilities. North of Flagstaff there are the Grand Canyon National Park, the Horseshoe Bend, the Antelope Canyon, the Monument Valley, and, a little further on, Utah's National Parks (Bryce Canyon, Zion and Grand Escalante National Monument). To the south there is the beautiful Sedona, the town of Tombstone where you can admire the old west at its best and, north of Tucson, the Saguaro National Park. We've already visited all these places and have to choose something different. It's definitely time to visit the Walnut Canyon National Monument, about ten miles southeast of Flagstaff.

Un paio di trail, di cui uno che costeggia il canyon e l'altro che ci porterà al suo interno percorrendo diversi scalini (1.4 km a/r) vi permetteranno di ammirare i luoghi decisamente inospitali dove vivevano le popolazioni di un tempo. Parliamo di una cultura pre-colombiana che ha abitato il Canyon tra il 1100 ed il 1250 dc.

There are a couple of trails: the first one runs along the canyon, the other one will take us inside it along several steps (1.4 km). Frome here we can admire this very inhospitable place where a pre columbian culture used to live here between 1100 and 1250 AD.

Per pranzo facciamo sosta nella sempre carinissima Flagstaff, da sempre anello di congiunzione tra nord e sud dello stato. Ma anche tra est e ovest. Soprattutto la sua Old Town, molto viva, ci permette di ricaricare le batterie in vista della seconda parte della giornata. Ora non resta che scegliere tra "una delle migliori pizze dell'Arizona" e "uno dei migliori burger". Pizza da Pizzicletta o burger da "Diablo Burger". Scegliamo l'opzione panino e non possiamo far altro che confermare. Locale rustico e spartano ma, come sempre succede, cibo squisito. No, non abbiamo sbagliato.

It's lunch time and the city of Flagstaff is perfect. Flagstaff has always been the connection between north and south of Arizona and also between east and west. Its old town is very cute and allow us have a break before the second part of the day. Now we have just to choose between "one of the best Arizona's pizza" (Pizzicletta) and "one of the best burger" ("Diablo Burger"). We go for a burger: it's a  rustic and spartan restaurant but food is delicious.

Prendiamo la ormai mitica "89", che abbiamo percorso già diverse volte durante gli on the road statunitensi, ma questa volta non arriveremo fino a Page. Ci fermiamo una trentina di chilometri a nord di Flagstaff, dove visiteremo due National Monument contigui: il sunset crater volcano ed il Wupatki.

We now take the legendary "89", a road already traveled several times during the US on the road, but this time we will not get up to Page. There are two national monuments located thirty kilometers north of Flagstaff: the Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki.

Seppur non dello stesso livello degli altri parchi del nord dello stato, anche il Sunset Crater Volcano merita una visita. Il solito loop da percorrere in auto (e che vi porterà a visitare anche Wupatki) vi farà immergere in quest'area enorme che, 900 anni fa, fu invasa dalla lava eruttata dal vulcano, cambiando per sempre la vita di persone, animali e piante che vivevano e vivono in questo paesaggio.

Well, of course these two national monuments are not as beautiful as the other parks located north of Arizona, but they definitely worth a visit. There's a loop that starts from the Sunset Crater Volcano visitor center and ends at the Wupatki National Monuments. This is a huge area: Roughly 900 years ago, the eruption of this volcano reshaped the surrounding landscape, forever changing the lives of people, plants and animals. You can Hike the trail through the lava flow and cinders, discover colorful, ruggedly dramatic geological features coexisting with twisted Ponderosa Pines and an amazing array of wildlife.

Diversi sono i trail percorribili. Il lava Flow Trail (1.6 km a/r), il Lenox Crater Trail (1.6 km a/r) ed il Aa Flow Trail (3 km) sono i più famosi. Ed è proprio mentre camminiamo che ci viene un'ispirazione. Perchè non andiamo...? No, non ve lo diciamo. Ve lo racconteremo nella prossima tappa. Per il momento sveliamo soltanto che siamo andati alla ricerca disperata di uno starbucks e quindi del wifi per cancellare due prenotazione di hotel ed effettuarne altrettante. In luoghi diversi ovviamente.

There are several trails to hike. The lava flow trail (1.6 km), the Lenox Crater Trail (1.6 km) and the Aa Flow Trail (3 km) are the most famous. While hiking one of them we got inspired. Why don't we go to...? No, we won't tell it, you have to wait for the next episode. For the moment we can just say that we're desperately looking for a starbucks and then for a free wifi: we need to cancel two hotel reservation and make a new one.

Lasciando il Sunset Crater Volcano, direzione nord, ci imbattiamo nell'adiacente Wupatki National Monument, che contiene diversi rovine ben mantenute di pueblo costruiti dagli indiani Anasazi e Sinagua nel 13esimo secolo.

Leaving the Sunset Crater Volcano and heading north, you will encounter the Wupatki National Monument, which contains several well-preserved ruins of pueblos built by the Anasazi and Sinagua Indians during the13th century.

L'ultimo stop, dopo aver ripreso la route 66 e prima di arrivare a Seligman (sede di tappa), è Williams, una delle porte d'ingresso al Grand Canyon, Qui, infatti, parte il treno, il Grand Canyon railway, che ogni giorno porta centinaia di turisti alla grande attrazione del nord ovest dello stato. Williams è molto forse troppo turistica ma, nonostante ciò, lo spirito della route 66 sembra comunque essere ancora vivo. Come ad esempio al Pete's rt 66 Gas Station, storica stazione di servizio della cittadina.

The last stop on the route 66 (before reaching Seligman) is Williams, one of the Grand Canyon's gate town. The Grand Canyon Railway takes every day hundreds of tourists to the beautiful National Park.  Williams is too touristy but, despite this, the spirit of Route 66 still seems to be alive. Especially at Pete's rt 66 Gas Station, the historic town gas station.

Arriviamo a Seligman che è ormai sera. La cittadina è, al pari di Williams, Kingman e Winslow, molto legata alla strada madre. Proprio ad est della città, parte, infatti, il tratto di route 66 più lungo e noi domani lo percorreremo almeno in parte.

It's already evening and finally Seligman appears in front of us. The town is, like Williams, Kingman and Winslow, connected to the mother road. Just east of town also starts the longest stretch of the route 66. 

Seligman è affascinante. Una sola via dove tutto è all'insegna della historical route 66. Anche il nostro motel, il Supai Motel, con la sua insegna al neon che svetta nel buio.

Seligman is charming. There is just on road, the main road, where everything is about the historical route 66. Even our motel, Supai Motel, with its beautiful neon sign.

La scelta per la cena è obbligata. Ci sono, infatti, solo due diner e sembra stia per arrivare una cena del tutto anonima. E invece no. Le alette sono buonissime, ma soprattutto un signore anziano decide che noi saremo le sue "vittime" per la sera.

There are only two diners and a completely anonymous dinner seems to come. Wrong  The chicken wings are delicious, but the thing that makes this evening special is an old man who decides that we will be his "victims"...

Arriva da una semi ghost town ad est di Seligman, è solo in città e ci chiede se può cenare insieme a noi. Il nome non ce lo ricordiamo, ma ci ricordiamo benissimo il cognome, "Marconi", perchè orgogliosamente ci racconta di essere italiano come noi. Per due ore ci parlerà della sua vita, della moglie che adesso è da qualche parte in Asia, del fatto che abbia dovuto scegliere la via del militare per non finire in prigione e di una vita che gli sta portando via quello che gli ha dato. "Non mi resta molto tempo da vivere, mi godo ogni istante" ci racconta. E' un personaggio un filo strano, non sappiamo quanto poter restare rilassati e quanto invece stare all'erta. Ma la verità è che voleva soltanto un po' di compagnia e, senza saperlo, regalarci la cena più bella del viaggio. This is why we travel.

He comes from a ghost town northwest of Seligman. He is alone in town and would like to dine close to us. We don't remember his name, but we can't forget the surname, Marconi, because he proudly tells us about his italian origins. He talks about his life for two hours, about his wife who is currently living in Asia, about what he had to do to avoid the jail (join the army) and about a life that is taking away what if gave him. "I do not have much time left to live, I enjoy every moment," he says. He's a weird character and we don't know if we can stay relaxed or be alert. The truth is that he just wants a to talk with someone and have a good time. Without even knowing it, he's giving us best dinner of the trip. This is why we travel.

Seligman è una di quelle città che, una volta salutato il buio della notte, cambia il suo volto. E' un insieme di colori e cimeli della route 66, in un'atmosfera tipicamente anni '50-'60 capace di rapirti. E, infatti, anche se dovremmo ripartire immediatamente, ci facciamo coinvolgere da tutto ciò che è legato alla strada madre.

Seligman is one of those cities that, once the darkness of the night has left, shows its best face. It's a set of colors and memorabilia of Route 66, in a typical '50 and '60 atmosphere.  In fact, even if we should immediately leave, we end up getting involved with everything that is related to the mother road.

E ce n'è uno in particolare che attira la nostra attenzione, il Delgadillo Historic Route 66 barber shop and visitor center. Come mai? Semplice, a dirigere l'ex barber shop è un arzillo novantenne, di nome Angel Delgadillo, soprannominato l'angelo guardiano della route 66 e, ovviamente, anche il papà della mother road.

And there's one in particular that gets our attention, Delgadillo Historic Route 66 barber shop and visitor center. Why? Angel Delgadillo, who has been dubbed the 'guardian angel' and "father" of U.S. Route 66 is the owner. He is 90 years old and he has always lived here. 

Angel è nato proprio qui a Seligman, il 19 aprile 1927... e da qui non se n'è mai andato. Non l'ha fatto durante il "California or dust", non l'ha fatto neppure quando è stata costruita l'highway. Lui è Seligman, lui è la route 66. Nel 1985, nel pieno del declino della route 66, ha fondato con sua moglie Wilma l'Historic route 66 Association of Arizona e fu proprio lui ad essere contattato dal regista di Cars per ottenere informazioni sulla vita lungo la route 66. "Non sai come è cambiato tutto da quando hanno costruito l'Highway, non passa più nessuno" furono le prime parole di Angel. Che ovviamente illuminarono John Lasseter.

Angel was born right here in Seligman, April 19, 1927 ... and he has never left this place. Angel did not leave during the "California or dust", he didn't even leave when the highway replaced the route 66 He is Seligman, he is the route 66. After the decline and eventual delisting of the route from the United States Highway System in 1985, he went on to found the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona. While researching the history of Route 66 for the 2006 Disney/Pixar motion picture Cars, John Lasseter met Delgadillo, who told him how traffic through the town virtually disappeared on the day that nearby Interstate 40 opened. In the film, Sally Carrera serves as a vehicle to deliver that message in a 3½ minute flashback in which the town and the US Highway vanish literally from the map. It has been said that Delgadillo helped to inspire the movie through his passion for the road.

No, Angel Delgadillo non è uno come gli altri, è nell'Olimpo della route 66 insieme a Lucille e Gary Turner dei quali abbiamo parlato quando abbiamo attraversato Missouri ed Oklahoma. Chi passa da qui lo fa essenzialmente per stringere la mano ad Angel, diventato negli ultimi vent'anni un'icona della strada madre.

Well, Angel Delgadillo is not a man like any others,he is in the Olympus of the route 66 along with Lucille and Gary Turner of which we talked about when we crossed Missouri and Oklahoma. Who comes here wants to meet Angel: he has become in recent decades an icon of the Mother Road. 

Per lui si sono scomodate televisioni (diversi programmi italiani l'hanno intervistato, tra cui Dreams Road in onda la domenica mattina su raiuno), giornali e persino autori di libri. Purtroppo però il suo gift shop non aprirà prima delle dieci e la nostra tabella di marcia ci impone di ripartire. Alle 9 lasciamo Seligman e continuiamo a percorrere il tratto più lungo della route 66. Un tratto lungo, lunghissimo...tanto da sembrare infinito.

He has become an attraction along the road with people stopping to talk to him and coming from all over the world just to meet him. When the Associated Press was interviewing him, he met with tourists from Europe and Asia. Unfortunately he is going to open his gift shop at ten am, but we have to leave right now. It's 9 am and, while leaving Seligman, we travel along the longest stretch of route 66. It' long, very long. It seems infinite. 

Qualche piccola cittadina (Peach Sprins, Truxton, Valentine ed Antares) e tanti territori desertici, interrotti da qualche cartello che indica che da qui è possibile raggiungere il versante sud-ovest del Grand Canyon. Per intenderci quello dello "Sky-walk" e delle splendide Havasu Falls, situate nell'omonima contea gestita dai nativi.

We see some small villages like Peach Springs, Truxton, Valentine and Antares and many desert areas, interrupted by some sign indicating that from here you can reach the south-west side of the Grand Canyon. We are talking about the very famous "Sky-walk" and the beautiful Havasu Falls, located in the homonymous county run by natives.

Siamo molto lontani dalla Highway 40 e, tra una cittadina e l'altra, ci fermiamo al Hackberry General Store di Hackberry, Arizona.

We are very far from Highway 40 and while driving we encounter a weird gift shop. Its name is Hackberry General Store Hackberry, located in the small village of Hackberry, Arizona.

Non potrete mancarlo perchè una marea di turisti che percorrono la tratta che dal Grand Canyon va a Las Vegas (o Los Angeles) l'hanno resa una tappa obbligata lungo un viaggio sulla route 66. Ad accompagnarci ci sono le solite splendide memorabilia della route 66: oggetti, libri, mappe e molto altro. E non dimenticate di incontrare il famosissimo Max, il cane apparso in diversi spot commerciali (tra cui Harley Davidson e United Airlines) e in show televisivi andati in onda in Olanda e Germania.

You can not miss it because a lot of tourists that travel the stretch that goes from the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas (or Los Angeles) have made it an obligatory stop along a journey on Route 66. A collection of roadside memorabilia. Take some time to peruse the many maps, books, signs and artifacts relating to historic Route 66, and be certain to sign the guest book. Meet “Max”, our lovable, friendly rescue dog. He has been featured in TV commercials for Harley-Davidson motorcycles and United Airlines in the U.S. and on television shows in Holland and Germany on the international scene. Pet him and receive an energetic wag of his tail.

Qualche miglio dopo ecco finalmente la prima grande città dopo molto tempo. Sostanzialmente dopo Williams. Siamo a Kingman, celebrata anch'essa nella famosa canzone sulla route 66 e punto di riferimento quanto riguarda tutto l'ovest dell'Arizona. Il visitor center (powerhouse visitor center) è fornitissimo anche sulla route 66, ma non riusciamo proprio a farcela piacere. Noi siamo fatti per  tutte le Seligman di questo mondo, non c'è nulla da fare.

A few miles later, here it comes the very first big city in a long time. Substantially after Williams. It's Kingman, which is also celebrated in the famous song about the route 66 and a reference point regarding the whole west of Arizona. The visitor center (powerhouse visitor center) is also stocked on Route 66: anyway, we don't know whay but we don't like Kingman. We are just made for all the Seligman of this world, this is the truth.

Noi però dobbiamo fare un passo indietro. Già, perchè adesso la strada ci porterebbe a superare il confine californiano ed approdare a Barstow, che cinque anni fa fu il primo impatto che avemmo con l'America. Per noi è "dove tutto è cominciato". Dovremmo attraversare la particolarissima Oatman, cittadina legata alle miniere dei primi del novecento dove è consuetudine visitare l'Oatman Hotel (alla stanza 15 Clark Gable pernottò durante la luna di miele), ma è ancor più consuetudine trovarsi a contatto con gli asinelli che girano liberamente per le poche viuzze di Oatman. E infine anche Needles, situata proprio al confine, dove scorre il Colorado e dove è possibile ammirare il carrozzone della corsa all'oro usato nella serie tv "Death Valley Days".Noi invece viriamo verso nord, perchè il giorno prima, davanti ad un caffè, abbiamo scelto di cambiare i nostri programmi. E sulla route 66 non deve sorprendere. Avremmo dovuto passare da Barstow e poi volare verso il cuore della California per visitare il Sequoia National Park e invece stiamo andando a Las Vegas e, il giorno successivo, visiteremo il Joshua Tree National Park. Ci eravamo promessi una sola cosa in fase di organizzazione, di evitare almeno questa volta Las Vegas, ed invece ci siamo ricascati. Stiamo viaggiando lungo la "93" e, dopo aver visitato la pittoresca semi-ghost town di Chloride, entriamo nel Nevada e nel suo deserto per tornare nella città del peccato. Solo per una notte, solo perchè il desiderio di pernottare al Golden Nugget ha preso il sopravvento.

Now we have to take a step back. Yes, because now the historical route 66 would lead us to overcome the Californian border and get to Barstow, which five years ago has been our baptism in the United States of America. For us it is just "where it all began." We should cross the peculiar Oatman, a town linked to the mines of the early twentieth century where people visit the Oatman Hotel (Clark Gable spent the night during the honeymoon in the room number 15) and admire the donkeys that run freely along the streets. And finally Needles, located at the border, where flows the Colorado and where you can see the wagon of the Gold Rush used in the TV series "Death Valley Days" .But we are driving to the north. Why? Because the day before we decided to change our plans. The original plan was Barstow and Sequoia National Park in the heart of California but now we're going to Las Vegas and the next day, we will visit the Joshua Tree National Park. While planning the trip we promised just one thing: "This summer we won't go to Las Vegas again" we said. Well, everything has changed. We are traveling along the "93" and, after visiting the picturesque semi-ghost town of Chloride, we encounter the Nevada Desert and then the sin city. Only for one night, just because we really would like to experience the Golden Nugget Hotel.

Torniamo, anche se solo per qualche minuto, alla Hoover Dam, la diga di Hoover, della quale abbiamo parlato approfonditamente il "The Old Wild Southwest", ci fermiamo al Las Vegas Premium Outlet (quello a est della strip) e finalmente raggiungiamo downtown. Il Golden Nugget ci affascina non solo perchè abbordabile economicamente come molti dei lussuosi hotel di "Vegas", ma anche e soprattutto per quello scivolo d'acqua che scorre in una vasca popolata da molti pesci tra cui squali. Di Las Vegas abbiamo ormai raccontato tutto ed il contrario di tutto, E anche la strip ormai l'abbiamo visitata in lungo e in largo.

We come back, even if for a few minutes, to the Hoover Dam, which we have extensively talked about during "The Old Wild Southwest" trip, we even stop at the Las Vegas Premium Outlet (the one east of the strip) and finally reach downtown. The Golden Nugget is fascinating not only because it's as cheaper as many of the luxury "Vegas" resorts, but also and especially for the water slide flowing into a tank populated by many fish including sharks. We've already told everything and its opposite about Las Vegas, now it's time to have a good dinner.

Se siamo qui è anche perchè vogliamo tornare nel mitico Rollin Smoke Barbeque, un locale decisamente spartano situato a tre chilometri a nord della strip che offre uno dei migliori bbq dello stato. Per chi volesse vivere una Las Vegas più vera, lontana dalle luci dei riflettori, il Rollin Smoke è il posto giusto.

Well, we are here in "Vegas" also because we want to come back to the mythical Rollin Smoke BBQ, a very spartan restaurant located two miles north of the strip that offers one of the best BBQ in the state. For those wishing to live a truer Las Vegas, far from the spotlight, the Rollin Smoke is the right place.

Poi ,ovviamente, non è possibile resistere al fascino della "strip", dei resort immensi e della quantità di persone che la popolano ogni sera. Avremmo dovuto essere in un altro deserto, quello del Mojave, in mezzo al nulla, con il solo rumore dei binari del treno che è stato il nostro primo impatto con gli Usa e che mai dimenticheremo. Siamo invece davanti al Venetian con un cupcake di un certo "Boss delle Torte". Tutto sommato ne è valsa la pena. O no?

Then, of course, we can not resist the charm of the "strip", the huge resorts and the immense amount of people that populate it every night. We should have been in a different desert, the Mojave desert, in the middle of nowhere, with only the noise of the train tracks that was our first impression of the US five years ago and that we will never forget. We are instead in front of the Venetian with a cupcake of a certain "cake boss." All in all it was worth. Or not?

2016 trip - Route 66, Hawaii, Seattle and much more (day 15: Las Vegas - Rancho Mirage)

La giornata di oggi sarà lunga, molto lunga. Trovandoci a Las Vegas e non in quel di Barstow, non solo aumentano i chilometri, ma ci troviamo a dover affrontare ben tre deserti prima di raggiungere Palm Springs ed il Joshua Tree National Park, la grande attrazione della giornata. Prima il deserto del Nevada, poi quello del Mojave ed infine quello del Colorado ci attendono lungo un percorso che ci porterà per larghi tratti a viaggiare in solitaria. Nonostante ciò incrociamo, non appena entrati in California un incidente che ha di fatto bloccato il traffico nell'altra corsia. Scopriremo poi al telegiornale che purtroppo sarà mortale... Decidiamo di non visitare la città fantasma di Calico (perchè a pagamento) e, salutate sia la "nostra" Barstow che Helendale con il suo Exotic World of Burlesque Hall of Fame, voliamo spediti verso il primo appuntamento di giornata lungo la Historical Route 66.

Today's whole day is going to be long, very long. We're in Las Vegas, not in Barstow: the consequence is that miles are increasing and we have to face three deserts before getting to Palm Springs and the Joshua Tree National Park, the biggest attraction of the stage. The Nevada Desert, the Mojave Desert and then the Colorado Desert are waiting for us along the road: we'll definitely be alone for most of the day. Nevertheless we notice a huge car crash that has effectively blocked the traffic in the other lane and then discover from the news that unfortunately it has been a deadly crash... We decide to skip the ghost town of Calico and pass trough Barstow and then Helendale with its Exotic World of Burlesque Hall of Fame. Now we're reaching the first stop of the day along the Historical Route 66.

Siamo a Oro Grande, in pieno deserto Mojave, con la "solita" ferrovia fedele compagna di viaggio e qualche casa sparsa qui e la. Qui sorge uno dei musei a cielo aperto (gratuito), più strani della Route 66, il Forest of Bottle Trees (Elmer’s Bottletree Ranch), gestito da un altro dei personaggi simbolo della strada madre, Elmer Long.

It's Oro Grande, in the middle of Mojave Desert. The "loyal" railway runs next to us. Here lies one of the open air museums (admission free), probably the strangest of Route 66, the Forest of  Bottle Trees (Elmer's Bottletree Ranch), managed by another symbol of the mother road, Elmer Long.

Prima di esplorare la sua "foresta di vetro" vorremmo scambiare due chiacchiere con lui, ma ancora una volta da questo punto di vista la fortuna ci volta le spalle. E' infatti presente sul posto la televisione per un'intervista e purtroppo  non sarà una cosa di breve durata.

Before exploring his "glass forest" we would like to talk with him, but once again from this point of view we're not very lucky. The television is here for an interview and he has to stay with the journalist. Unfortunately they won't finish very soon.

Non ci resta che ammirare le varie bottiglie di vetro, accuratamente posizionate insieme ai soliti immancabili splendidi cimeli della route 66. Un luogo surreale in pieno deserto, tanto surreale da sembrare quasi un'oasi.

We can just admire the various glass bottles, carefully positioned along with the usual inevitable wonderful Route 66 memorabilia. A surreal place in the desert,it seems an oasis.

Chissà quanti si saranno fermati sperando che le bottiglie fossero piene d'acqua...

Who knows how many people have stopped there hoping that all those bottles were filled with water ...

Ce ne sono di diversi tipi, raccolte dal signor Elmer durante tutta la sua vita. Alcune sono davvero dei cimeli preziosissimi.

They come in different types, collected by Mr. Elmer throughout his life. Some of them are precious heirlooms.

La città principale che incrociamo durante questo tratto di route 66 non lontano da Los Angeles, ma staccatissimo dalla highway, è Victorville, sede anche del museo californiamo sulla "mother road". Che noi troviamo tuttavia chiuso. La "città degli Angeli" si avvicina a grandi falcate, ma noi oggi la costeggeremo solamente. Arriveremo a San Bernardino e poi vireremo verso sud ovest. A proposito di San Bernardino, forse la conoscerete per via della canzone sulla Route 66 ("kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino...") o forse per la tremenda sparatoria di qualche anno fa in un centro disabili. Se così non fosse significa che la conoscete per un terzo motivo, che è poi quello che ci ha spinto a fermarci in una città che non ci sembra proprio la più "sicura" tra quelle visitate sino ad ora.

The main town of this stretch of Route 66 located not far from Los Angeles but very far from the highway, is Victorville, also home of the Californian museum on the "mother road". Of course, it's closed. Today we're going to skip the "city of Angels", we're getting to San Bernandino and then towards southwest. About San Bernardino, perhaps you know this city because of the Route 66 song ("kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino ...") or perhaps for the terrible shootings happened a few years ago in a disabled center. But there's a third reason, which is what prompted us to stop in a city that does not seem the "safest" among those visited so far.

Nonostante un'altra città americana, Des Plaines, in Illinois, provi a rivendicarne il titolo, fu proprio qui, a San Bernardino, lungo la route 66 (ovviamente), che nel 1940 i fratelli Mc Donald, Richard e Maurice aprirono il primo (di quella che poi diventò una lunga serie) Mc Donald's. Il fast food che ha scritto la storia degli ultimi 75 anni, è nato in quello che ora, per la gioia degli "aficionados", è diventato un museo grazie all'intervento di Juan Pollo, un imprenditore locale che possiede una catena di ristoranti di pollo.

It was here, in San Bernardino, along Route 66 (of course), that in 1940 the McDonald brothers, Richard and Maurice opened the first (of what later became a long series) Mc Donald's. It has since been purchased by the owner of local chicken restaurant Juan Pollo and converted into a museum. It is always debated as to it being the first since the Des Plaines, Illinois restaurant also claims that, but that one was actually opened 15 years after this original one.

Un gentile signore all'ingresso ci racconta tra le altre cose che a breve uscirà anche un film sui fratelli Mc Donald's (The Founder) che vedrà protagonista come attore principale Michael Keaton. Ricordatevi che, se doveste acquistare un happy meal, potrete mandare il giochino che troverete al suo interno al museo che lo esporrà (con il vostro nome e la nazionalità), insieme agli altri cimeli. Noi non siamo grandi amanti di Mc Donald's, anzi, ma negli Usa ci salva sempre quando abbiamo un disperato bisogno (e succede praticamente sempre) di un espresso nei posti più sperduti. E costa anche pochissimo! Quindi lunga a vita McDonald's.

A gentleman at the front desk tells us among other things that soon a movie on Mc Donald's brothers (The Founder) will come out  and the star will be Michael Keaton. Remember that, if you were to buy a happy meal, you can send the game that you find inside it to the museum: they will display it (with your name and nationality), along with other memorabilia. We are not big fans of Mc Donald's, indeed, but in the US it always saves us when we desperately need an espresso coffe in the middle of nowhere. It's even cheaper! So cheers to McDonald's.

Arriviamo a Rancho Mirage che è già pomeriggio. Gli hotel nell'intera area che fa capo a Palm Springs sono di livello molto alto e fortunatamente (essendo fuori stagione) anche con prezzi veramente bassi. Dovremmo percorrere immediatamente la sessantina di chilometri che ci separa dal Joshua Tree National Park ma ci facciamo coinvolgere dalla bellezza dell'hotel e perdiamo grossolanamente parecchio tempo in piscina.

It's already afternoon when we arrive in Rancho Mirage. Hotels throughout this area (the most famous city here is Palm Springs) are very high-quality level and fortunately prices are fair because  it's not the main season. We should immediately drive along the 60 kilometers which separate us from the Joshua Tree National Park but we lose a lot of time at the hotel's pool.  

Non solo dunque non abbiamo preparato a dovere il parco, inserito solamente due giorni prima nel programma di viaggio, ma lo raggiungiamo che sono già le 17.

Therefore, we have not properly prepared the visit to the national park and we go there at 5 pm. This is not the perfect way to admire what will become one of the highlights of the journey.

Non riusciremo a raccontarvelo nel dettaglio come abbiamo invece fatto in occasione degli altri parchi incrociati lungo la route 66, ma il Joshua Tree National Park anche se visitato superficialmente ci ha colpito moltissimo.

We can not tell you about it in detail as we rather did for the other parks along Route 66, but the Joshua Tree National Park really impressed us very much although visited superficially

E finalmente abbiamo capito perchè tantissimi artisti (tra cui gli U2) sono stati ispirati nel corso degli anni da questo National Park desertico enorme, situato al confine tra il deserto del Colorado e quello del Mojave.

We can finally understand why many artists, includind U2, have been inspired over the years by this huge and desertic National Park, located on the border between the Colorado and Mojave deserts.

A renderlo unico sono soprattutto i suoi alberi somiglianti a cactus dalle forme contorte e grottesche (Yucca) e gli ammassi rocciosi tipici del southwest americano.

What makes it unique are especially its trees resembling a cactus from the twisted and grotesque forms (Yucca) and the typical rock masses of the American southwest.

Il caldo c'è ma non è soffocante come quello che troverete nella Death Valley anche per via dell'altura. Il parco ha tre entrate che formano una sorta di "Y": quelle a nord sono le più gettonate e a fare da "gate town" troverete le cittadine di Yucca, Joshua Tree e Twentynine Palms, sicuramente la più fornita tra motel e ristoranti.

It's hot but not as hot as into the Death Valley. The park has three entrance gates that makes a "Y": those in the north are the most popular, and the main "gate towns" are Yucca, Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms, surely the best-stocked in motels and restaurants.

Noi entriamo da nord est e, per questioni di tempo, percorriamo solamente la "loop road", la strada che copre interamente tutta la parte nord del parco. Entriamo dunque a nord est ed usciremo a nord ovest.

We are coming from north east and driving just along the "loop road" (north side of the park) because it's already 6 pm. We will leave the park from the north-west side.

Non ci spingeremo sino alla parte centrale e quindi a malincuore salteremo Arch Rock (trail di 0.3 miglia) e quindi le prime stranissime formazioni rocciose che caratterizzano il Joshua Tree, ed il Cholla Cactus Garden (trail di 0.25 miglia), da dove ammirare gli splendidi cactus colorati del parco.

We won't get to the middle of the park and then we're forced to skip Arch Rock (0.3 miles trail) with the first strange rock formations that characterize the Joshua Tree and also the Cholla Cactus Garden (0.25 miles trail), where you can admire the beautiful colored cactus of the park.

Ci fermiamo invece ad ammirare sia la Split Rock, una un enorme formazione rocciosa dalla forma quasi sferica e soprattutto Skull Rock, una delle più belle attrazioni del parco. Non fatevi influenzare dal cartello che segnala la lunghezza dell'intero trail (1.7 miglia) che porta al campground. lo Skull Rock è situato proprio a ridosso del parcheggio.

We have indeed time to stop and visit the Split Rock, a huge rock formation almost round in shape and especially the Skull Rock, one of the most beautiful attractions of the park. Do not be influenced by the sign which indicates the length of the entire trail (1.7 miles) that leads to the campground. Skull Rock is located just behind the parking lot.

E non manca neppure qualche incontro ravvicinato con la "fauna locale"...

And there is even some close encounter with the wildlife...

L'area che segue "Skull", chiamata Jumbo Rocks, è una delle più affascinanti dell'intero parco e, dopo averla visitata, rimpiangerete di non avere una tenda per campeggiare durante la notte. Si tratta, infatti, di un campground immerso tra grandissime e particolari formazioni rocciose, che ricordano dinosauri e castelli. Ognuno qui si lascia andare con l'immaginazione... Notiamo diversi turisti e campeggiatori che stazionano sulle rocce: il tramonto sta, infatti, arrivando e questa è una delle posizioni migliori per ammirarlo.

The area below "Skull", called Jumbo Rocks, is one of the most fascinating of the whole park. After having visited it, you will regret that your' not camping overnight. It is, in fact, a campground nestled among huge and unusual rock formations, which resemble dinosaurs and castles. Everyone here goes with the imagination ... We note several tourists and campers stationed on the rocks: the sunset is, in fact, coming up and this is one of the best spot to admire it.

Noi però dobbiamo proseguire, mentre i colori cambiano ed uno dei tramonti più belli a cui abbiamo assistito ci avvolge.

We have to proceed, while colors are changing and one of the best sunset we've ever seen appears in front of us.

Nel giro di una manciata di minuti è buio. Una delle straordinarie bellezze del Joshua Tree National park è che rimane aperto 24 ore su 24.

The dark is coming. One of the extraordinary beauty of Joshua Tree National Park is that it's open 24 hours.

E allora, nonostante non si veda davvero più nulla, effettuiamo la deviazione che ci porterà in cima alla montagna e quindi alla Keys View, un'altra delle principali attrazioni del parco. Siamo un po' titubanti se affrontarla o meno, ma poi notiamo diverse auto che, come noi, stanno puntando dritto verso la cima. Nonostante sia buio in cima riusciamo ad ammirare il punto più basso (il Salton Sea) e quello più alto (Mt St Gorgonio) dell'area. E ovviamente in lontananza si intravede anche Palm Springs.


And then, although we cannot really see anything, we make a detour that will take us at the top of the mountain and then at the Keys View, one of the main attractions of the park. We see several cars that, like us, are heading straight to the top. Although it is dark at the top it's possible to notice the lowest point (the Salton Sea) and the highest (Mt Gorgonio St) area. And of course, you can see Palm Springs in the distance.

Non c'è nessun tipo di illuminazione artificiale e quindi, a breve, il cielo si riempirà di stelle. Lasciamo il parco intorno alle 9 e, una volta raggiunta la prima "gate town", ci rifugiamo in un Domino per una pizza veloce seduti su una panchina. Siamo ancora noi, il deserto, le stelle e una delle cene più belle del viaggio.

There isn't any kind of artificial lighting and then the sky is going to be full of stars. We leave the park around 9m and, upon reaching the first "town gate", we stop at Domino for a quick pizza sitting on a bench. It's still us, the desert, the stars and one of the most beautiful dinners of the entire trip.
