2011 trip: Sognando California (day 1 - Barstow)

BARSTOW - GRAND CANYON - LAS VEGAS - MAMMOTH LAKES - YOSEMITE - SAN FRANCISCO - MONTEREY - PISMO BEACH - LOS ANGELES

The first time in the States, the first trip organized by ourselves, the first time for many things . We purposely left it for last, because here it all started and if now we are "americans" it's because we had a special first time, which was not easy. We sayd "i want to come home" after three days, we made a lot of mistakes preparing the stages, we made a lot of mistakes booking the hotels (in Los Angeles we slept in Inglewood...). We could write a book, but it was the first time and we were very far from the almost perfect machine that we are now. An amazing trip, however. We must repeat that of course because, especially for the first 5-6 days , we did not  understand where we was... A journey that, even in its initial difficulties, made us fall in love with the United States and we will try to tell in a different way than the others.

As you can see on the map, the fist "amateur" mistake is to start the trip from Lax airport of Los Angeles instead of Las Vegas. We add useless 400 miles, but it's all Marco's fault that wanted to drive into the desert. He couldn't imagine that almost everything there was desert. And also because the traffic in L.A. could be a disaster: but we immediately discover the car pool. Americans are genius.

Ah, flash-back. In tanti ci avevano messo in guardia in vista dei controlli doganali all'aereoporto, lunghi è difficoltosi. Welcome to the Us...

Flashback . Many people told us to pay attention at the customs controls at the airport. But the policeman jokes with us talking about Italy and Francesco Totti, a soccer player.  Of course, at the next checkpoint you have to declare not only the Hotel where you are going to sleep the first night, but also the tow. And we, says "Barstow " ... said with the innocence of those who are waiting for an answer like this: "Cute, do not forget to visit .... " . No, no, no... The woman with a smile says "Why Barstow ? " . Welcome to the Us ...

At Alamo we take the car and they try to sell us insurances and other "useless" things. Of course the answer is "yes" to every questions. Don't act like us! We are on the road: the Staples Center...

and Randy Donuts, a special place in L.A. that also appears in a "Californication", the song of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Huge mistake not to stop there, but it was 7 pm and we were really tired after 12 hours flight.

Let's talk about Barstow. We chose Barstow because we wanted to move away from Los Angeles and Barstow was one of the biggest town on the route 66. It's 10 pm, there is no one in the street, it's all dark and our motel looks like a classic horror movie.

And in the background throughout the night there will be noises like a train that is holding back on track . All night long. The next day we'll find out  that there is an important railway station in Barstow and that, most likely, they were working. The fatigue wins and we fall asleep and for the first time we think about " where we ended up " . And the best is still to come ...

2011 trip: sognando California (day 2, Grand Canyon)

Terribile.

We were talking about the impact, quite strong, with the American reality. We are in Barstow, in the heart of California along the Route 66. The jet lag forces us to wake up at 4:30 in the morning and, despite the time, the desert heat is already tremendous. We have to wait 6.30 a.m. to be able to go down and have breakfast and so we take the opportunity to fill in both the journey travel and the little book with all the costs. Each penny was calculated. Terrible.

Outside our room Barstow, in the morning, looks like a city. Also the pool is less scary... (p.s. Barstow is the typical town of the american desert, nothing against it...but when it's your first time...)

Destinazione Grand Canyon.

The car is still in the parking, we are ready to go! Grand Canyon is waiting for us...

400 miles in the Mojave desert. You can imagine, after two to three hours when everything is fascinatin,g the fourth, fifth and the sixth hours...

we are crossing the California from the west to the east...

Fenomeni.

till entering in Arizona, where Grand Canyon is situated. The park is three hours (or something more) from Vegas... Are we the best or not?

Salvi.

It's midday and we are still far from the park. We take the opportunity to eat the first typical American Hot Dog. You have to build it alone and after ten minutes we are still looking for the bread. Finally a motorcyclist approaches us with the same smile of the controller at the airport and prepares one for himself. Safe.

Approaching the Grand Canyonnot only changing the landscape around us, but also the weather. No more heat, but a lot of rain... unthinkable a hundred miles before .

At 2 pm we finally arrive at the park. The enter fee is 25 dollar (by car) and it lasts for seven days.

We sleep inside the park and our room is really close to the canyon.

We decide to drink something before going to the canyons. Our English was far from the english we speak (or at least we try to speak ... ) today and while we were looking for the bar we see a waitress. "Excuse me, where is the bar" we say with the "italian pronunciation"... she doesn't understand and call two colleagues... Nobody undestand us. finally a waiter realizes that we were looking for the "baaaaar" (american pronunciation).  From that moment, however, we haven't forgotten the pronunciation of " bar"...

It's 4 pm. It's time to visit the park, the shuttle is waiting for us...

An amazing place, it is at the second place with the Monument Valley after the White Sands National Park in our personal ranking.

Sometimes it seems to be hanging in the air  (typical Ale's picture)

You can also see the Colorado River...

and, thanks to the kindness of the driver of the shuttle, we can see at the same time the sunset and the rainbow, but unfortunately the camera had decided to abandon us...

We finish  the evening in "our " bar, the only one in the park, with live country music ...

and the first american burger evere while our mind is in Vegas yet...

REMARKS ON THE GRAND CANYON : If you want to sleep inside the park you need to book in advance.  We spent an afternoon in the park and the next morning we were already on the road. In this way we did not have the possibility to live three amazing experiences: to walk on the Skywalk because it was at the other side of the Rym, ratfing in the Colorado River and visit the canyon with the elichopter.

2011 trip: sognando California (day 3, from Grand Canyon to Las Vegas: prima parte)

We wake up too late and the sunrise is already over. At least we can see some animals...

and take the last picture to the marvellous grand canyon...

Leaving the park the "adventures" begin. It's time for the "first time" with gasolin , that for at least 4-5 days will be a nightmare despite Ale was clearly a petrol station in a previous life . We stop at a gas station and it doesn't work ... After the usual ten minutes the owner, an old man ( who surely must have thought , " I have been to war, look at what i have to see ...") finally helps us.  For breakfast we stop in a very, very special place...

We recommend you to go there, also because it's really close to the park entrance. The locations is the flinstones one, really beautiful. But the strange thing is that the coffee costs just 10 cents.  The problem? Only one, who tells the waitress that we just want coffee after she took us at least 4 menus in which there was everything and more and more...

It takes 4 hours to reach Vegas: after two of them we are in Nevada...

a desert state, ugly, where there is basically nothing ... but there is Las Vegas. And you can breathe this atmosphere 50 miles far from the city...

Marco prova anche una deviazione nel tentativo di raggiungere un fantomatico lago (immaginiamo salato, dato che ci saranno 50 gradi all'ombra), ma i cartelli da film horror ("danger", "do not...." etc) ci fanno desistere.

Marco sees a lake (we suppose it was a salt lake) and wants to reach it but the road signs scare us ("danger", "do not...")...

At lunch we eat an ice-cream and we also discover the american portions. And it was a small portion...

Panic when Marco finds out that our car loses water, but after discovering that happens to all the cars in the desert because of the air conditioner!) we realize that we are safe. While Las Vegas is appearing in front of us: the stratosphere hotel is visible 50 miles away.

In this trip we chose to book the hotel from time to time, not in advance (much better). We arrive in the city and Ale would sleep right at the Stratosphere. Marco comes out with a "it's expensive for sure, we should leave the strip, the main street, and look for a hotel there." We stopped at La Quinta but the availability for just one night suggests us to stay in Vegas only one day. Big, big, big big mistake.Terrible. Oh, in the strip hotels are really cheap, Ale was right. After some dives in the pool ...

We are ready to take the shuttle that will take us along the strip for the evening. But the evening deserves a separate post...

2011 trip: sognando California (Day 4 - From Grand Canyon to Las Vegas, part 2)

The lights are on in the evening and Las Vegas changes its face: the impact is strong

We decide to dine before visiting the various hotels on the strip and our choice is the Kahunaville inside the Treasure Island.

We choose it because a friend of Ale's brother is working there. But that evening he wasn't at work. On the other hand we eat one of the best burger (and bigger) of the trip...

e faremo amicizia con la cameriera...

We start a friendship with the waitress...

Friendship which we believe would be interrupted as soon as she realizes that we had left a dollar tip in coins of 1, 2 and 5 cents. At that time we didn't know that tips are a serious thing, but now it's completely different...The waitress also keep bringing Marco budweiser for free...he was drunk!

we aren't interested in gambling and we spend only 20 dollars at the roulette. Of course we lose everything in 2 minutes...

It's time to visit the strip and some hotels...

Il Venetian...

Venetian...

con le sue gondole,

whit the small "gondolas"

il Paris con la sua Tour Eiffel

Paris with the Eiffel Tower

Il Caesars Palace,

Caesars Palace,

o ancora il Bellagio...

Bellagio...

There would be at least another 15-20 hotels to visit (every hotel is basically a city, with shopping malls and many other things ...), but it's alreaady 1 a.m. iand is now to come back to our hotel. Let's go to the shuttle stop where in theory there should be a shuttle that takes us to the hotel but, surprise, our shuttle doesn't come...

Let's call that the phone number that the receptionist had given us, but we aren't able to understand the recorded voice. Obviously it was English, but for us it was like Arabic. Panic of course ... as if there were no cabs in Las Vegas...

L'Ale riprende colore...

We wait nearly an hour but nothing happens. There are only us and a old couple, we ask for information to them and find out that not only they are going to take the same shuttle, but they called it. What a relief! We discover that they are from Alabama and probably very rich: they were returning from a two-month vacation in Italy...

At the hotel stop they leave a big tip to the driver. Marco finished all the coins at the restaurant with the waitress so he is forced to use  the dollars...he is going to cry!

P.s. we were stingy, naive and far from having head for this kind of trip. Luckily then, things have changed ..
