Gospel in Harlem, New York. The magic of the Salem United Methodist Church

New York City significa anche messa gospel. Già, perchè la comunità afro-americana, fortemente radicata nella "grande mela" ed in particolare nel quartiere di Harlem, è da sempre ben disposta ad accogliere i numerosissimi turisti incuriositi dal mondo delle messe gospel. Le funzioni religiose, che solitamente si svolgono la domenica mattina (ore 11), sono spesso un fortissimo richiamo per i centinaia di visitatori che di conseguenza, si accalcano nelle numerose chiese del quartiere di Harlem, facendo scemare quell'indiscutibile magia che si può vivere assistendo ad una messa gospel. Un pastore accogliente, la musica, i canti gospel ovviamente ed i momenti di preghiera sono il sale di una celebrazione che davvero non andrebbe persa. Ma quale chiesa scegliere allora per evitare l'assalto degli altri turisti che come voi intendono assistere ad una messa gospel?

Visiting New York City means also attend a Gospel Mass in Harlem. That's because the African-American community, deeply rooted in the "big apple" and in particular in Harlem, is always willing to welcome the many tourists intrigued by the amazing world of gospel masses. The religious functions, which usually take place on Sunday morning (11 am), has always been a very strong recall for hundreds of visitors who often make the churches also very crowded.  This is why you have to choose the "right church to experience the magic of the gospel mass. A welcoming pastor, music, gospel songs and prayers are the ingredients of a celebration that shouldn't really be missed. Which church should you choose to avoid the onslaught of other tourists who wish to attend a Mass ghospel?

Evitare le principali chiese indicate sulle guide turistiche è la prima linea guida. La prima trappola è proprio affidarsi alle guide, perchè proprio come voi saranno in tanti a possederle e quindi recarsi nello stesso luogo. Una delle più gettonate è l'Abyssinian Church, con a ruota la First Corinthian Baptist Church. Noi abbiamo assistito alla messa di Natale e lo abbiamo fatto alla Salem United Methodist Church (2190 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd, New York), situata proprio nel cuore di Harlem. Le fermate della metro più vicine sono la "125th" e la "135th".

Just avoid the main churches listed on tourist guides: this is the first and most important tip: everybody are definitely going there! One of the most popular is the Abyssinian Church, another one is the First Corinthian Baptist Church. We've actually attended the Christmas mass at the Salem United Methodist Church (2190 Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd, New York), located right in the heart of Harlem. The nearest subway stops are the "125th" and "135th".

The pastor ci ha accolto splendidamente e lo stesso vale per i fedeli: molti dei quali si sono fermati con noi chiedendoci da dove venissimo e se stavamo gradendo lo spettacolo. La funzione può durare anche un'ora e mezza.

The pastor and his faithful welcomed us beautifully: many of them have stopped us asking a lot of questions. For example "where are we from?" or "are we enjoying the the atmosphere?". The function lasts about an hour and a half.

Terminata la messa avrete sicuramente appetito poiché sarà ora di pranzo. Il suo brunch domenicale diventerà la ciliegina sulla torta della vostra mattinata nel quartiere di Harlem.

The best of Las Vegas are...its sorroundings (day 1: Red Rock Canyon & Pioneer Saloon)

E' vero, di Las Vegas vi abbiamo ormai raccontato sostanzialmente tutto durante i precedenti tre viaggi nella capitale mondiale del divertimento, racconti che potete trovare in "United States - The Old Wild Southwest", "Usa - West Coast" e "Route 66, Hawaii e Seattle". Ma Las Vegas significa non solo "strip" e "downtonwn", ma anche e soprattutto i suoi dintorni, che al quarto viaggio nello stato del Nevada possiamo con certezza affermare essere ciò che ci ha colpito maggiormente. Saranno in tanti sicuramente a storcere il naso, ma non gli amanti della natura e di un'America nel complesso più vera, fatta di ghost town, saloon, deserto ed un paio di parchi sorprendenti. Vi avevamo già portato nella Death Valley, la "valle della morte" (due ore a nord-ovest di Las Vegas), l'abbiamo rivisitata con temperature decisamente più confortevoli (20 gradi e non i "soliti" 45) ed il National Park da affascinante è diventato splendido. Abbiamo ripercorso gli stessi view point e trail ed è per questo motivo che con un flash-forward ci spostiamo a 16 miglia a ovest della "sin city", poco più di venti minuti in auto. Siamo al Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, da non confondere con il Red Rock State Park della California e neppure con il Red Canyon in Utah.

DAY 1: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Bonnie Springs Ghost Town, Pioneer Saloon

DAY 2: Lake Mead National Recreation Area & Valley of Fire State Park

The truth is that we've already said everything about Las Vegas during the previous three trips in the world capital of entertainment and you can find them clicking on "United States - The Old Wild Southwest", "Use - West Coast" and "Route 66, Hawaii and Seattle". Anyway  Las Vegas does not just mean "strip" and "downtonwn": also its surroundings are very beautiful. After four trips in Nevas we can definitely say that this is the part of Vegas which impressed us the most. Nature lovers and people who want to experience a "real" America, made by ghost towns, saloons, deserts and amazing parks, would agree with us. We had already brought you to the Death Valley, (two hours north-west of Las Vegas) during the hot summer, we've been there also with lower temperatures (20° celsius instead of 45°) and this jewell of nature has become even more beautiful. We stopped at the same view point and hiked the same trails: this is the reason why we won't tell about Death Valley again. We're now 16 miles west of the "sin city", at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, not to be confused with the Red Rock State Park in California and even with Red Canyon in Utah.

DAY 1: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Bonnie Springs Ghost Town, Pioneer Saloon

DAY 2: Lake Mead National Recreation Area & Valley of Fire State Park

Qui siamo sotto l'egida dei National Park ed infatti entriamo con il national park annual pass che abbiamo con noi. La loop drive è di 13 miglia e vi porterà non solo a ridosso delle stupende rocce rosse del Canyon, ma anche delle vette più alte dove troviamo addirittura la neve, un fiumiciattolo ed una cascata. Il tutto in pieno deserto a poche miglia dalle luci e dal clamore di Vegas.

The park is managed by the National Park Service, this is why we can show national park annual pass and visit it for free. The scenic drive loop (13 miles) takes you not only close to the beautiful red rocks and the canyon, but also close to the highest peaks where you may even find the snow in winter time, a little river and a waterfall. That's just few miles far from lights and noise of Vegas.

La scenic drive (one way) regala di per sé viste molto interessanti, ma è fermandosi ai vari view point e percorrendo qualche trail che si riesce a cogliere il meglio del Red Rock Canyon. I primi che vi troverete di fronte, e dove abbiamo speso buona parte della permanenza nel parco, sono Calico 1, Calico 2 (soprattutto) e Calico Tanks. Qui siamo davvero a ridosso delle rocce rosse. I sentieri sono facilmente percorribili e vi porteranno all'interno del canyon oppure in altura. Ed è proprio dalla parte superiore del canyon che riusciamo a scattare le foto migliori.

The scenic drive (one way) gives very interesting views, but stopping at various view points and hike some trail will definitely be the best way to explore the Red Rock Canyon. The first one we face is Calico: Calico 1, Calico 2 and Calico Tanks. We stop at Calico 2, really close to the red rocks. The trail is very easy to hike and take us inside the canyon and even on high ground. From the top of the canyon we can take the very best pictures.

Un paio di miglia dopo Calico Tanks un altro trail affascinante ci aspetta. E' Sandstone Quarry, all'interno delle Calico Hills, tra sentieri all'ombra del canyon e stranissime formazioni rocciose, un must per gli scalatori, presenti in maniera copiosa nel parco.

Two miles after the Calico Tanks there's another nice trailhead, called Sandstone Quarry. Located within the Calico Hills, this trail takes you through shaded paths inside the canyon and strange rock formations. A must for climbers.

La parte centrale del parco è quella "meno rossa". Si sale decisamente sino a raggiungere, tramite una piccola deviazione con l'auto, White Rock prima e Ice box Canyon poi: il trail che affrontiamo è proprio Ice Box. Dopo un tratto nel deserto, raggiungiamo l'area più riparata del canyon, tra piscine naturali, cascate ed anche la neve che ci impedisce di proseguire oltre. Percorrere interamente il trail significa spendere circa 3 ore in quest'area selvaggia, lungo le 2.6 miglia del trail. L’attacco del sentiero si trova 7,7 miglia dopo il Visitor Center.

The central part of the park is "less red". It climbs up to reach, with a quick detour, the White Rock and Ice Box Canyon. We hike a little bit of the Ice Box trail. AIt begins in the desert and ends up at a sheltered area of the canyon which includes rock pools, waterfalls and even snow that prevents us from going further. Hike the entire trail means to spend about three hours into a wild area, along the 2.6-mile trail. The trail starts at mile 7.7.

Si sale di quota e, nei periodi invernali, non è raro trovare neve, cascate ed un clima decisamente più mite.

The parking lot for this trail is at mile 8. The trail crosses open desert then enters the canyon. There may be seasonal waterfalls and even snow.

Per chi avesse a disposizione un tempo maggiore, ecco alcuni trail che, secondo noi, meriterebbero particolare attenzione:

- Moenkopi
Semplice sentiero che prende il via dal Visitor Center e si sviluppa lungo un'area desertica del parco: qui è possibile godere del "rosso" delle Wilson Cliffs, passeggiando tra fossili e cactus.

- Distance: 2 miles

If you can spend much more time into the park, there would be some trails you should hike:

- Moenkopi
The trail starts to the west of the visitor center near the picnic area. It offers panoramic views of the Calico Hills, the Spring Mountains and La Madre Mountains.

- Distance: 2 miles

- White Rock Willow Springs
Un trail che si può imboccare da due diversi punti. l'Upper White Rock Srings Parking Lot e Willow Springs picnic area. Proseguendo oltre è possibile ammirare anche parecchia wildlife, su tutte le bighorn sheep lungo il White Rock La Madre Springs Loop (3.5 hours, 6 miles)

The trail starts either the upper White Rock Spring parking lot or at the Willow Spring Picnic Area. Watch for wildlife (especially bighorn sheep) if you proceed to White Rock-La Madre Spring Loop (3.5 hours, 6 miles)

- Oak Creek Canyon
Per accedervi occorre imboccare una strada non asfaltata, poco prima della conclusione della scenic drive. Un trail desertico che vi porterà all'interno del canyon

To access this trailhead, take the Oak Creek Turnoff from the 13-mile scenic Drive onto a dirt road. The trail then heads  through open desert to the mouth of the Canyon

Abbandonata la loop scenic e quindi anche il Red Rock Canyon, svoltiamo a destra proseguendo per cinque miglia lungo la Blue Diamond Road. Imbocchiamo la Bonnie Springs Road e dopo un paio di miglia raggiungiamo una città surreale.

As soon as we left scenic loop and the Red Rock Canyon, we made a right turn along the Blue Diamond Road. After five miles we made another right turn: the Bonnie Springs Road took us to a surreal town. 

Gli americani la definiscono ghost town, ma per come la intendiamo noi di ghost town ha ben poco. C'è infatti un motel, un ristorante, un treno per bambini e... anche uno zoo. Siamo a Bonnie Springs Old Nevada, uno degli avamposti della corsa all'oro e all'argento. 

Americans call it ghost town, but this town isn't "ghost" at all! There's a motel, there's a restaurant and even a zoo. This is Bonnie Springs Old Nevada, one of the outposts of the gold and silver rush.

Noi però stiamo cercando qualcosa di più "vero" e proseguiamo per una cinquantina di miglia in direzione sud ovest. Stiamo andando a Los Angeles? No, non così lontano anche se la highway 15 (Veteran Memorial Highway) è proprio quella porta verso Barstow prima e Los Angeles poi. Noi stiamo invece guidando verso Goodsprings, alle pendici delle Potosi Mountain. E' già sera e non riusciamo a fermarci alle Seven Magic Mountain, una creazione artistica del tutto particolare...

Honestly we're looking for something more "real" and keep driving for about fifty miles to the southwest. Are we going to Los Angeles? No, we won't get too far even though the highway 15 (Veterans Memorial Highway) is the one that leads to Barstow  and then to Los Angeles. Goodsprings, in the Potosi Mountain slopes, is our goal: it's already evening and unfortunately we can not stop at the Seven Magic Mountain, a very special artistic creation ...

... ma nonostante il buio ed il deserto decidiamo comunque di imboccare la Goodsprings Road (strada numero 161). Siamo alla ricerca della cittadina di Goodsprings, ma all'orizzonte non si vede nulla. Nessuna città, nessun segno di vita ed ovviamente nessuna auto che percorre la nostra stessa strada. Poi all'improvviso eccola apparire con le sue poche case e 200 abitanti. Noi siamo qui perchè vogliamo ammirare un pezzo di storia del west americano e non solo: anzi due, il Pioneer Saloon con l'annesso General Store.

... But despite the darkness and the desert, we decide to take the Goodsprings Road (number 161) looking for the town of Goodsprings. There're no towns in the distance, are we doing right or not? Yes, we're doing right. Goodsprings suddenly appears in front of us with its 200 inhabitants. We're looking for a piece of history of the American West and beyond. Well, honestly two pieces of history: the Pioneer Saloon with the adjoining General Store.

Il Pioneer Saloon fu il primo saloon del Nevada (1913) e varcare le sue porte vi porterà davvero indietro nel tempo. 

The Pioneer Saloon was the first saloon built in Nevada (1913) and cross its doors will really take you back in time.

Un signore, seduto al bancone con il suo bicchiere di whiskey, ci accoglie con un "Welcome to Goodsprings, what brings you in town?". Altro che Las Vegas, ecco gli Usa che amiamo. Siamo gli unici turisti. Insieme a noi altri 7 dei 200 abitanti della città, intenti a "farsi un goccio" mentre ammiriamo gli interni del saloon.

A gentleman, sitting at the bar with a glass of whiskey, welcomes us with a "Welcome to Goodsprings, what brings you in town?". This is the US we love! There are no tourists: it's us and 7 of the 200 inhabitants of the town "getting a shot" while we are admiring the interior of the saloon.

Tutto è rimasto così com'era ai tempi in cui Goodsprings era un crocevia della corsa all'oro ed all'argento. Notiamo che sulle pareti, oltre ad esserci numerosi attori e attrici (molti film sono "passati" da qui, su tutti "Miss Congeniality" con Sandra Bullock), c'è un'intera sezione dedicata a Clark Gables (Via col Vento) e Carole Lombard.

Everything has remained as it was in the days when Goodsprings was a crossroads of the gold and silver rush. We note that there are many pictures of actors and actresses on the wall ("Miss Congeniality" with Sandra Bullock is just one of the many movies set in the saloon), but a whole section of the saloon is dedicated to Clark Gables ("Gone with the Wind") and Carole Lombard.

Chiediamo agli avventori spiegazioni e sembra davvero che non aspettassero altro. "Qui è successo un tragico evento". "Ah sì"? "Sì, era il 1942 quando un aereo con a bordo anche Carole Lombard precipitò sulle montagne, ad una manciata di miglia dal saloon. Dovete sapere che i detriti dell'aereo sono tutt'ora sparsi lungo le montagne... Clark Gables passò le intere giornate qui al saloon in attesa che fosse ritrovato il corpo della moglie".

We ask patrons about the wall and it seems that they are just waiting for that. "A tragic event happened here". "Really"? "Yes, it was. 1942, a plane came down and rushed to the mountains just a handful of miles far from the saloon. Carole Lombard was on that plane. You should know that the plane's detritus are still scattered along the mountain ... Clark Gables spent three days at the saloon while waiting for news about his wife".

Cercavamo un pezzo di storia americana, eccolo servito. Ah la cena. Squisita. Prezzi sopra la media ma "ribs" e fagioli squisiti. Proprio come nel vecchio west...

We were looking for a piece of American history, here we are. Well, the dinner was delicious. Prices above average but "ribs" and beans were amazing. Just like in the old west ...

Spesso sottovalutata la Valley of Fire State Park rappresenta uno dei fiori all'occhiello dello stato del Nevada. Comoda da raggiungere da Las Vegas (45' minuti ad est della città), altrettanto se si proviene dai parchi dello Utah come Zion e Bryce Canyon, la Valle del Fuoco è un parco davvero da non perdere. E vi renderete immediatamente conto del perchè del nome: le rocce, in particolari ore del giorno, sembrano davvero di un color rosso infuocato, regalando agli appassionati di fotografia panorami impareggiabili. La via più semplice per accedervi provenendo da Las Vegas è la Interstate 15 che vi condurrà all'entrata ovest del parco. Noi però, essendo sempre alla ricerca costante di panorami mozzafiato, decidiamo di percorrere la scenografica 167 all'interno del Lake Mead National Recreational Area (ingresso 20 dollari, è valido l'annual pass dei National Park). Ci eravamo già avvicinati al Lake Mead quando avevamo visitato nel 2015 la diga di Hoover, ma restiamo comunque sorpresi ed affascinati da una strada che scorre per un centinaio di chilometri in un contesto naturale con pochi eguali. Da una parte le rocce rosse di arenaria tipiche del west e dall'altra le acque turchesi, raggiungibili con brevi deviazioni dalla "167" direzione ovest. E' il paradiso di chi ama pescare, nuotare in acque limpide (almeno nei mesi caldi), effettuare un giro in barca o più semplicemente fare qualche camminata. Ricordandosi sempre che qui in estate è davvero molto caldo e le temperature si aggirano sui 40-45 gradi. Vorremmo fermarci ma il nostro obiettivo di giornata è la Valle del Fuoco, che raggiungiamo dal versante est.

Often underestimated the Valley of Fire State Park is one of the jewels of the great state of Nevada. Easy to reach from Las Vegas (45 'minutes east of the "sin city") and even if you're coming from the Utah's National Park as Zion and Bryce Canyon, the Valley of Fire is a park that shouldn't be missed. Well, you will immediately understand why the name is Valley of Fire: the rocks look really a fiery red color, giving to photographer unparalleled views. The easiest way to access the park coming from Las Vegas is the interstate 15 which will take you at the west entrance of the valley. We're actually looking for breathtaking views as alwats, and then takes the scenic 167 within the Lake Mead National Recreational Area (admission $ 20, the National Park annual pass is valid). We had already approached the Lake Mead in 2015 when we visited the Hoover Dam, but it's impossible not to be amazed and fascinated by a road that runs for hundreds of kilometers in a natural setting with few equals. On the one hand the red rocks of sandstone typical of the west and then the turrquoise waters of the Lake Mead, reachable by short detours from the "167" to the west. 'That's a paradise for those who love fishing and swimming in clear water (at least during the warmer months), do a boat ride or simply hike some trails. Do not forget that during summer time it could be very, very hot (more then 40 degrees celsius). We would like to stop but our final goal is the Valley of Fire, reachable from the east side.

L'ingresso allo state park costa 10 dollari per vettura: compiliamo un form ed inseriamo i 10 dollari in una busta. A controllare non c'è alcun vigilante. Ma questa è l'America...

The entrance to the state park costs $ 10 per car: we fill a form and the insert the $ 10 bill in an envelope. There isn't anybody at the check gate. Well, this is America ... and we love it!

Imbocchiamo la Valley of Fire Highway, la via principale del parco che, percorsa interamente, concluderà il proprio percorso al west gate. La parte più interessante però, si trova nella zona centrale, effettuando una piccola deviazione lungo Mouse's Tank Road.

We take the Valley of Fire Highway, the main route, which ends at the west gate. The most interesting part, however, is located in the central area, making a small detour along the Mouse's Tank Road.

Ed è per questo che non ci soffermiamo sui primi view point, comunque molto affascinanti. Su tutti "Elephant Rock" (una roccia a forma di elefante), dal cui parcheggio parte un trail diretto al Pretzel Arch, un arco a forma di...pretzel, "The Cabins" (capanne di pietra costruite nel 1930 in mezzo a enormi rocce rosse) e  le "Seven Sisters" (massi erosi con intorno un deserto di sabbia).

That's why we don't stop at the first view points even if they're very fascinating. Three examples ar the "Elephant Rock" (a rock in shape of an elephant: from this parking lot you can even reach the Pretzel Arch), "The Cabins" (stone huts built in 1930 in the midst of huge red rocks) and the "Seven Sisters" (rocks eroded in the middle of a sand desert).

Raggiunto il Visitor Center ed effettuata la svolta a destra lungo Mouse's Tank Road (la scenic drive del parco) si entra davvero in un'altra dimensione. Il solo percorrerla in un contesto naturale splendido vale il prezzo del biglietto, ma è fermandosi ai view point e soprattutto effettuando qualche trail che assaporerete la vera Valley of Fire.

Once reached the Visitor Center, make a right turn and keep driving along the Mouse's Tank Road (the scenic drive of the park). You will really be catapulted in another dimension. Just driving and admire this beautiful natural environment worth the visit, but if you want to taste the real Valley of Fire you've to stop at the view points and hike some trails.

Noi scegliamo di evitare il Mouse's Tank Trail, un trail di 2 miglia a/r, ricco di catini naturali di raccolta d'acqua e petroglifici e ci dirigiamo direttamente a Rainbow Vista, uno degli highlights del parco.

We decide to skip the Mouse's Tank Trail (2 miles), full of natural basins of water collection and petroglyphs, and head directly to Rainbow Vista, one of the park's highlights.

Le temperature aiutano (sono i primi giorni di febbraio e ci sono solo 20 gradi) e possiamo dare il là alla nostra avventura nel parco. Salire sulle rocce sino ad una ventina di metri di altezza regala panorami mozzafiato: sotto di noi la strada e, all'orizzonte, la bellezza della valle che da questa posizione sembra essere ancor più infuocata. I colori del fuoco, il giallo ed il rosso, sono dominanti.

The pleasant temperatures definitely help us and we can finally explore the park. "Sorry Valley of Fire for the delay". Climb on the rocks until reaching about twenty meters in height offers breathtaking panoramas: the road below us and, on the horizon, the beauty of the valley that seems to be even more fiery. The fire colors, yellow and red, are dominant. 

Un centinaio di metri dopo Rainbow Vista, svoltiamo a destra lungo Fire Canyon Road, un mini loop di 0.4 miglia che porta al Fire Arch Canyon. Qui ci sarebbe anche un bellissimo arco a ridosso di una strada sterrata, ma sono carenti le indicazioni e non riusciamo a trovarlo.

Just after the Rainbow Vista, we make a right turn along the Fire Canyon Road, a kind of mini loop of 0.4 miles leading to the Fire Arch Canyon. There would also be a beautiful arch next to a dirt road, but the lack of information don't help us. We're forced to skip this place. 

Scenograficamente il tratto di strada più affascinante è proprio quello che va dal Fire Canyon alla conclusione del loop e quindi la White Dome Area. Le onde della Valley of Fire sembrano disegnate e dipinte da un artista.

Scenically, the most fascinating stretch of the road is the one that goes from Fire Canyon to the end of the loop and thuen to the White Dome area. The waves of the Valley of Fire seem to be drawn and painted by an artist.

In questo tratto non mancano né i view point e neppure i trail a ridosso dei parcheggi 1, 2 e 3 (Crazy Hills Trail, Fire Cave Trail e Thundestorm Arch). Noi ci fermiamo al parcheggio numero 3 per effettuare quello che a tutti gli effetti è il trail simbolo del parco. Attenzione perchè dallo stesso parcheggio, ma in direzione opposta, parte anche il trail Fire Cave.

There are many view points and trails along this section of the road, all of them located between the parking lot 1, 2 and 3 (Crazy Hills Trail, Fire Cave Trail and thundestorm Arch). We stop at the parking lot number 3: the most famous hike of the Valley of Fire begins right there. Be careful because also the Fire Cave Trail begins at the same parking lot. This one goes in the opposite direction. 

Noi stiamo invece per percorrere i 2km a/r (1 ora) di Fire Wave che ci condurranno alle Fire Wawe. Questo sentiero di media difficoltà, ben segnalato con dei paletti, regala viste impagabili. Su tutte ovviamente quella di "the wave", che non sarà della stessa bellezza dell'originale, definiamola così, in Utah, ma è comunque tremendamente affascinante.

Well, we're actually going to hike the 1.3 miles trail called Fire Wave.This moderately difficult trail, well marked with stakes, offering priceless views. The final goal is of course "the wave". Ok, this isn't as beauty as the world famous Wave in Utah that will not be the same beauty of the original, so define it, in Utah, but it is tremendously fascinating. Absolutely the best spot of the Valley of Fire.

Impieghiamo una mezz'oretta per raggiungere questo luogo silenzioso e nello stesso tempo maestoso: la verità è che non vorremmo più andarcene. Questo, ancor più di altri trail non è consigliato con le alte temperature. Durante l'estate, ma non solo, il momento migliore per godere delle splendide "waves" è il tramonto.

It takes half an hour to reach this silent and at the same time majestic place: the truth is that we do not want to leave "the wave" anymore. This trail is definitely not recommended with high temperatures. The best time to enjoy the beautiful "waves" is the sunset, especially in summer time.

Manca ancora un view point prima di concludere la Mouse's Tank road e rientrare sulla Valley of Fire Highway. E' l'ultimo ma è anche probabilmente uno dei più belli, White Domes. Il trail è un loop di 2.5 km (45 minuti) tra dune bianche, canyon, rocce rosse ed anche una capanna abbandonata utilizzata per il film "The Professional". In avvio di trail c'è una scalinata di rocce che permette di scendere nel Canyon, sulla quale andrebbe prestata un pizzico di attenzione.

There is still a view point before ending the Mouse's Tank road and re-join the Valley of Fire Highway. This is the last but not the least: the White Domes is definitely one of the best view point and especially hike of the entire park.  between the white dunes, canyons, red rocks and even an abandoned hut used for the film "The Professional". The trail begins at the parking lot and is a one way loop od 2.5 km (45 minutes) between white dunes, canyons, red rocks and even an abandoned hut used for the  movie "The Professional".There is a rocky, slightly steep beginning to the hike.

Gli slot canyon, piccole fessure all'interno del canyon che consentono il passaggio ai visitatori, sono assolutamente la parte più affascinante del trail. Alla conclusione dello stesso, proprio poco prima della strada, salite sulla roccia per godere di un altro splendido panorama della vallata.

There are very different scenery and rock patterns and colors and the slot canyon halfway through really makes this a great trail. At the end of it, just before the road, go up on the rocks for a great vista.

E' l'ultimo gioiellino di un parco che, al pari del Joshua Tree National Park, è da annoverare tra quelli che più ci ha sorpreso in relazione alle esigue aspettative.

That's the last jewel of a park that, like the Joshua Tree National Park, could be definitely listed among the most surprising park in the United States. Obviously in relation to the meager expectations we had before visiting it.

Sono quasi le 5 ed essendo ancora inverno il sole tramonta prestissimo. Dobbiamo rientrare e lo facciamo dal versante ovest del parco, fermandoci agli ultimi view point, senza tuttavia effettuare altri trail.

It's almost 5 pm. Being still winter the sunset comes very early and we have to come back to Vegas. The western side of the park with its view point is the very last part of our day into the Valley of Fire.

Una breve deviazione dalla strada madre ci porta a percorrere la scenic loop road dove non mancano i possibili spunti per una veloce fermata. Come ad esempio Windstone Arch, una piccola grotta con all'interno un arco, Atlatl Rock e, a brevissima distanza, anche Arch Rock (nella foto) e, per concludere, "The Beehives", originariamente dune di sabbia ora diventate rocce di arenaria.

A short detour from the main road takes us along the scenic loop road where there are plenty of places for a quick stop. Such Windstone Arch, an arch located into a small cave, Atlatl Rock, the closest Arch Rock (in the picture below) and, finally, "The Beehives": they originally were sand dunes then become sandstone rocks.

Lasciamo il parco affamati dopo aver camminato per una decina di km e, a tal proposito, vi consigliamo un ristorante davvero imperdibile. Talmente imperdibile che per ben due delle cinque sere spese a Las Vegas abbiamo cenato proprio lì. Il Carson Kitchen, situato a circa duecento metri dalla "Vecchia Las Vegas". Pochi coperti e "gente del posto" vi faranno compagnia, ma la qualità del cibo (e anche di birre e cocktails) è di livello assoluto, con prezzi sicuramente abbordabili. Vi citiamo almeno un piatto per farvi venire l'acquolina in bocca: il Bacon Jam, marmellata di bacon con Brie e crostini di pane. C'è da aggiungere altro?

It's time to leave the park and we're even getting really hungry. Which is the best restaurant in Las Vegas? This is one you can't really miss, a place where we've been twice during our staying in the "sin city". Its name is Carson Kitchen, located about two hundred meters far from the "Old Las Vegas." Few seats and local people, this is Carson Kitchen: the quality of food (but also beers and cocktails) is very high level and definitely affordable. We mention at least one dish just to make you hungry: the Bacon Jam, made by bacon-jam, Brie cheese and croutons. There's no need to say something else...
