Exploring the Dolomites: 10 days in Trentino Alto Adige (Italy) and Tirol (Austria). Day 2 Mezzocorona - Mezzocorona

Se la prima giornata è stata solamente un piccolo antipasto di quelli che saranno le dieci giornate spese nelle Dolomiti, beh... dalla seconda si comincia a fare sul serio. Per davvero. Già, perchè tra le tante cose da fare e vedere in Trentino Alto Adige non può mancare (almeno) una giornata speso in uno dei parchi naturalistici più belli e curati del nord Italia, il Parco Naturale Adamello-Brenta, l'area protetta più vasta del Trentino. Ecco, se siete alla ricerca di uno spunto per un itinerario in Trentino Alto Adige che comprenda pochi spostamenti, poche ore spese alla guida e nella natura, difficilmente in questi post troverete pane per i vostri denti. Già, perchè, la nostra intenzione è stata sin da subito di portare l'America... in Italia. Cosa vuol dire? Semplice, Sulla scorta dei nostri mitici on the road a stelle e strisce, abbiamo voluto vedere in un solo viaggio tutto il meglio del Trentino e dell'Alto Adige (o almeno una buonissima parte) e ciò ha fatto sì che dovessimo percorrere ogni giorno diversi chilometri con la nostra auto lungo le tortuose strade di montagna, un prezzo che abbiamo scelto di voler pagare per poter ammirare le "natural wonders" di una delle regioni più belle d'Italia. E dunque, anche se la tappa odierna ci vede compiere un loop su Mezzocorona (dove pernotteremo anche questa sera), le ore spese in macchina sono state circa 4 (200 i km percorsi). Ma per noi tutto ciò è normale, anzi rappresenta la pura bellezza degli on the road a noi tanto cari...

If the first day was just a small appetizer of what will be the ten days we spent in the Dolomites, well ... now it's time for real. Yes, because among the many things to do and see in Trentino Alto Adige, visitors should really spend (at least) a day in one of the most beautiful and well-kept natural parks in northern Italy, the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park, the largest protected area of Trentino. If you are looking for some tips for a road trip in Trentino Alto Adige that includes few kilometers travelled by car, a few hours spent driving and then walking in the nature, this couldn't be the post made for you. Yes, because, from the very beginning, our intention was to bring America ... to Italy. What does it mean? That's easy, on the basis of our "legendary" on the road in the Usa, we wanted to see in just one trip all the best of Trentino and Alto Adige (or at least a fai chunk of it): this means that we had to travel many miles every day along the winding mountain roads, a fair price tto pay in order to admire the many natural wonders of one of the most beautiful regions of Italy. And therefore, even if the second stage started and ended in the town of Mezzocorona, we had to spent 4 hours driving our car (200 km traveled). Anyway, this is just normal for us: it represents the pure beauty of an on the road...

LA SECONDA GIORNATA, NEL CUORE DEL PARCO NATURALE ADAMELLO-BRENTA

Sì, lo sappiamo, per qualcuno potremmo risultare noiosi. Ma, almeno nei primi giorni, non abbiamo fatto altro che effettuare paragoni con gli Stati Uniti. Alla fine, abbiamo la "disease", siamo "malati di America" ed il non essere là almeno all'inizio ha inciso. Ma, onestamente, il Trentino ha impiegato si e no meno di 24 ore per farci capire che "tranquilli, quest'anno ve la diamo noi l'America...". E' bastato entrare nel parco naturale Adamello-Brenta per sembrare di essere in uno dei National Park Americani. Il visitor center, il centro visitatori, il gazebo all'entrata del parco, sì, quello "del bigliettaio" ci fa sentire a casa. Dove stiamo andando? A visitare una delle gemme preziose del Trentino Alto Adige, incastonato tra alcune tra le vette più alte del Parco Naturale Adamello Brenta, il Lago di Tovel.

Yes, we know, we could just be boring for someone. But, at least in the early days, we did nothing but make comparisons with the United States. In the end, we have the "disease", we are in love with the USA and the fact of not being there has had an impact. At least at the very beginning of the road trip. But honestly, Trentino Alto Adige took less than 24 hours to make us to tell us "don't worry, you'll forget about the USA very, very soon...". It was right. It was enough to enter the Adamello-Brenta natural park to seem to be in one of the American National Parks. The visitor center, the man at the gazebo at the entrance that gives you the map and welcomes you... all these stuff makes us feel at home. Where are we going? We're visiting one of the precious gems of Trentino Alto Adige, nestled between some of the highest peaks of the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, Lake Tovel.

Ma andiamo con ordine. Nell'estate 2020, in piena emergenza Covid-19, l'unico modo di visitare il lago se si vuole accedere con la propria vettura, è quello di acquistare on-line (meglio se con largo anticipo), il ticket del parcheggio. L'alternativa è usufruire della navetta che parte dal paese di Tuenno. But first things first. In the summer of 2020, in the midst of Covid-19 emergency, the only way to visit the lake by car is with a special ticket. This is the "parking-ticket" and you'll need to buy it well in advance.  The alternative way is to use the shuttle that leaves from the town of Tuenno. Sarà che Tovel è stato il primo dei tanti laghi visti durante questo road trip, sarà la pioggerellina del mattino che ha allontanato molti dei visitatori che solitamente prendono d'assalto il lago, sarà che nonostante l'altezza (1178 m) Tovel è il più grande lago del parco, sarà per la sua particolare storia... ma questo bellissimo specchio d'acqua ci ha colpito sin da subito. Situato in un contesto naturale con pochissimi eguali, il lago di Tovel sembra davvero avere un qualcosa di magico. Uno dei motivi è legato alla sua colorazione. 

Maybe it's because Tovel has been the first of the many lakes we visited during this road trip, maybe it's because of the morning drizzle that has stopped many of the visitors who usually storm the lake, maybe it's because be that despite Tovel is the biggest lake in the park despite its altitude (1.178m), maybe it's because of its particular history ... but this beautiful body of water struck us right away. Located in a natural setting with very few equals, Lake Tovel really seems to have something magical. One of the reasons is related to its coloring.

Già, perchè se adesso saranno l'azzurro ed il verde smeraldo a catturare i vostri occhi, se l'aveste visitato nel 1964 l'avreste trovato (in particolari periodi dell'anno)... rosso. No, non è un refuso. Tovel è l'ex lago rosso, per via di una particolare alga, la Tovellia Sanguinea che cresceva in una particolare zona del bacino. Se, come noi, siete incuriositi dal fenomeno, non preoccupatevi. Percorrendo il giro del lago troverete numerosi pannelli esplicativi che raccontano la storia del lago, la flora, la fauna ed ovviamente il particolare fenomeno che lo ha reso per molti anni di color rosso.

Yes, because if now the blue and the emerald green catch your eyes, do not forget that this lake has been tinged with red since 1964 due to a particular alga, the Tovellia Sanguinea which used to grow in a particular section of ​​the basin. If you are intrigued by the phenomenon, don't worry. Walking around the lake you will find various panels that tell the history of the lake, the flora, the fauna and obviously the particular phenomenon that has made the lake red for many years.

COME VISITARE IL LAGO DI TOVEL

Detto del parcheggio e delle varie possibilità di accedere al lago di Tovel, una volta superato il "gate" d'ingresso al lago vi basterà lasciare la vostra vettura nell'apposito parcheggio e seguire (verso sinistra rispetto all'entrata) il breve sentiero che in un paio di minuti vi porterà sulle sponde del lago. Da qui parte un bellissimo percorso di 4.5 km (ad anello) che vi permetterà di ammirare le acque del Lago di Tovel da tantissime angolazioni. Il sentiero è largo e ben tenuto, è adatto anche ai bambini (ed ai passeggini) ed il dislivello è davvero minino. In un'ora e mezza circa avrete completato il "loop" che consigliamo di percorrere in senso anti orario, soprattutto se lo state visitando al mattino. La parte sinistra del lago, infatti, regala scorci ancor più belli. 

LUNGHEZZA DEL TRAIL : 4.5 km - percorso ad anello

Having said about the parking and how to get to Lake Tovel, once you get to entrance gate, just leave your car in the parking lot and follow (to the left) the short path that in a couple of minutes takes you to the shores of the lake. From here, a beautiful 4.5 km loop trail allows visitors to admire the waters of Lake Tovel from many angles. The path is wide and well maintained, it is also suitable for children (and strollers) and the elevation gain is really minimal. It takes about 1.30 minutes to complete the loop: we recommend to hike this trail in the anti-clockwise direction, especially if you are visiting the lake in the morning. The left side of the lake, in fact, offers even more beautiful views.

A metà percorso, poi, una piccola deviazione (circa 500 metri), conduce alla cascata Rislà. Prendete come riferimento, se come noi avete scelto il percorso in senso antiorario, la spiaggetta del lago: da qui dovrete risalire leggermente sino a raggiungere il torrente Rislà e poi la cascata 

At the halfway point, then, a small detour (about 500 meters) leads to the Rislà waterfall. If, like us, you're following the anticlockwise route, take as a reference the small beach of the lake: from here you will have to go up slightly until you reach the Rislà stream and then the waterfall.

CASCATE NARDIS E SENTIERO DELLE CASCATE NELLA VAL DI GENOVA

Lasciato il Lago di Tovel ed avendo più giorni a disposizioni, avrete davvero l'imbarazzo della scelta per quanto riguarda le possibili prossime mete. Sì, perchè tra le cose da vedere in Trentino Alto Adige non può mancare la Val di Sole con Dimaro, perfetta per chi ama il rafting, o la rinomata e bellissima Madonna di Campiglio con le vicine cascate del Pison. Noi invece, tanto per cambiare, siamo di corsa e diretti nel cuore del Parco Naturale Adamello Brenta, nei pressi di Pinzolo. Il nostro prossimo obiettivo sono sì delle cascate, ma onestamente molto più belle di quelle del Pison, le cascate Nardis, in località Giustino. Anche qui, come già successo per il Lago di Tovel, abbiamo acquistato con largo anticipo il ticket del parcheggio (https://www.pnab.it/poi/ingresso-val-genova-diga/), una sorta di lascia passare la bellissima Val di Genova, all'interno sempre del Parco Naturale Adamello-Brenta. Il costo del parcheggio varia a seconda di quanto vicini vogliate parcheggiare all'attrazione naturale che più vi interessa lungo la Via Val di Genova, la strada che da Pinzolo conduce prima alle cascate Nardis e poi al cuore della valle. Mettiamola così, se il vostro unico obiettivo sono le cascate Nardis e non volete camminare, il parcheggio che dovrete scegliere è "Parcheggio Ponte Verde". 

If you have enough time, once you leave Lake Tovel, you will really be spoiled for choice as regards the possible next destinations. Yes, because among the many things to see in Trentino Alto Adige you cannot certainly miss the Val di Sole with the town of Dimaro, perfect for those who love rafting, or the renowned and beautiful Madonna di Campiglio with the nearby Pison waterfalls. We are as usual in a hurry, so we're heading to the heart of the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, near the town of Pinzolo. Our next goal is another waterfall, which is  honestly much more beautiful than the Pison fall, the Nardis waterfalls, in the small town of Giustino. Here too, we purchased the parking ticket well in advance (https://www.pnab.it/poi/entry-val-genova-diga/), a kind of "pass"for  the beautiful Val di Genova, within the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park. The parking fees varies depending on how close to the natural attractions you want to park to along the Via Val di Genova, the road that leads from Pinzolo first to the Nardis waterfalls and then to the heart of the valley. Let's put it this way, if your only goal is the Nardis Falls and you don't want to walk, the parking lot you will have to choose is "Parcheggio Ponte Verde".

COME VISITARE LE CASCATE NARDIS - TUTTE LE INFO

Come visitare le Cascate Nardis? Onestamente, spulciando su internet, le informazioni specie durante la pandemia legata al Covid-19, non erano così esaustive. In realtà visitare le cascate Nardis (le più comode da raggiungere) e soprattutto le altre cascate lungo il "sentiero delle cascate" è piuttosto semplice e permette ai visitatori di cominciare i vari percorsi in diversi punti, adattando lo sforzo in base ai bisogni di ciascuno. Per farla breve, chi non volesse camminare potrà raggiungere quasi tutto il meglio della Val di Genova con la propria vettura e percorrendo solo pochissime decine di metri a piedi. La strada da seguire, come detto, è la via Val di Genova e capirete di averla trovata quando a farvi compagnia sulla sinistra ci sarà il bellissimo fiume Sarca. 

How to visit the Nardis Falls? Honestly, sifting through the internet, informations, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, were not exhaustive. Actually, visiting the Nardis waterfalls (the easiest to reach) and above all the other waterfalls along the "Sentiero delle Cascate" (path of the falls) is quite simple and allows visitors to start this trail at different points, adapting the effort according to the needs of each.  In short, those who do not want to walk, will be able to reach almost all the best of the Val di Genova with their own car and covering only a few meters by walk. The road to follow, as mentioned, is via Val di Genova: you immediately notice that this is the right road because the beautiful Sarca river flows on the left.

Se avrete parcheggiato in bassa Valle (ticket: 6 euro, estate 2020) sarà piuttosto lungo il percorso (su strada asfaltata, la via Val di Genova appunto) che vi condurrà alle prime cascate, le Nardis. Il consiglio è di acquistare il ticket per l'Alta Valle che vi permetterà di parcheggiare al già citato Parcheggio Ponte Verde, a meno di 500 metri dalle cascate Nardis. Proprio prima delle cascate c'è un altro parcheggio ma ben più piccolo: con un po' di fortuna tuttavia potreste trovar spazio anche qui. Cosa dire delle Cascate Nardis? Che sono stupende e dall'alto dei suoi 95 metri di salto, sono davvero imponenti. Sono bellissime viste dalla strada, lo sono ancor di più se allungherete il vostro percorso di circa un centinaio di metri sino al ristorante Cascate Nardis: da qui, infatti, la vista è davvero impagabile. Le cascate Nardis sono le più belle e famose tra le cascate che compongono il "Sentiero delle Cascate", impareggiabile sia d'estate che d'inverno, quando si ghiaccia. 

If you leave your car in the lower valley (parking fee: 6 euros, summer 2020), the trail to the Nardis Waterfalls gets very long (you'll have to follow the Val di Genova road, a paved road). We recommend to buy the parking-ticket for the Upper Valley (Alta Valle) which allows visitorsto park at the aforementioned Ponte Verde parking lot, less than 500 meters from the Nardis waterfalls. Just before the falls there is another parking lot which is much smaller: if you're lucky enough, however, you might find a space here too. What can we say about Nardis Falls? They are beautiful and truly impressive (95 meters high). If you look at them from the road, they are impressive, but if you walk further on till the Nardis Waterfall Restaurant, you'll just be amazed. The Nardis waterfalls are the most beautiful and famous among the waterfalls that make up the "Path of the Falls", incomparable both in summer and in winter, when it freezes.

SENTIERO DELLE CASCATE - TUTTO QUELLO CHE C'E' DA SAPERE

Dal ponte verde, ovvero dove avrete lasciato la vostra auto per visitare le cascate Nardis, comincia il bellissimo "Sentiero delle Cascate", un must per chi ha voglia di esplorare il parco a fondo ed ha a disposizione una giornata intera. Ma la bellezza di questo sentiero è che permette anche a chi ha meno tempo a disposizione di percorrerlo, almeno in parte, "entrando in corsa", diciamo così, evitando di percorrere i circa 15 km che conducono da Ponte Verde (960 m) a Piana di Bedole (1560 m). Il sentiero da seguire è il B01. 

The beautiful "Sentiero delle Cascate" (path of the waterfalls) begins at the "Ponte Verde Parking lot". This a must for those who want to explore the park thoroughly. Anyway, the beauty of this path is that it also allows those who don't have plenty of time to follow it, at least in part. That means you won't be forced to hike the entire trail (15 km one way- the name of the path is B01) that connects Ponte Verde (960 m) to Malga Bedole (1560 m).

Sulla base della nostra esperienza (avevamo a disposizione solamente 3-4 ore), vi consigliamo di parcheggiare a Ponte Verde e visitare le cascate Nardis e poi di riprendere la vostra vettura e di percorrere circa 4 km lungo la strada sino al suggestivo e colorato rifugio Fontanabona. Qui potrete nuovamente parcheggiare l'auto e cominciare l'avventura, seguendo per circa 1.5 km la sterrata sino al Ponte Rosso. Noi, una volta raggiunto il ponte, ci siamo fermati nell'attrezzato visitor center dove una gentilissima ranger ci ha consigliato di cominciare ad addentrarci nel "vero" sentiero delle Cascate. Abbiamo allora attraversato il ponte e ci siamo diretti verso le Cascate Lares, poste sopra l'omonimo fiume, il Rio Lares, che disegna ben tre cascate. 

Based on our experience (we only had 3-4 hours to spend in Val di Genova), we recommend you to park you car at the Ponte Verde parking lot, visit the Nardis waterfalls and then take your car back and drive about 4 km along the road till you get to the suggestive and colorful refuge Fontanabona. Here you can leave your car again and start the adventure by walk, following the dirt road for about 1.5 km until you get to the Ponte Rosso. Once we reached the bridge, we stopped in the well-equipped visitor center where a very kind ranger recommended us to begin our "path of the falls" (Sentiero delle Cascate) right here. We then crossed the bridge and headed towards the Lares Falls, located above the  Rio Lares, which draws three waterfalls.

L'intera Val di Lares, così chiamata per la presenza abbondante di larici che in autunno colorano tutto d’oro, nel suo primo tratto è abbastanza impervia e forma un gradone di alcune centinaia di metri. Potrete raggiungere sia il view point "basso" che "alto" per ammirare da più angolazioni la bellissima cascata. Dopo averla visitata, non tornate da dove siete venuti, ma attraversate un piccolo ponticello che conduce ad una radura. Seguite il percorso sino al parcheggio. Da qui, avrete due opzioni per proseguire nel percorso. Anzi, a dirla tutta tre, perchè se avete acquistato il ticket del parcheggio corretto potrete salire con la vostra vettura ancora per un paio di km. Le due opzioni di cui vogliamo parlare sono tuttavia legate all'hiking. La prima possibilità è seguire la strada asfaltata che con una serie di tornanti sale sino a Ponte Maria e Ragada. 

The entire Val di Lares, so called due to the abundant presence of larch trees that turn all gold in autumn, is quite inaccessible at least in the first stretch. You can reach both the "low" and "high" view points to admire the beautiful waterfall from multiple angles. After visiting it, don't go back, but cross a small bridge that leads to a clearing. Follow the path to the parking lot. From here, there are two options if you want to continue along the path. Indeed, to be honest, there are three options. Don't you ever forget that you have the right parking-lot ticket, you can get to the next stop also by car.  However, the two options we want to talk about are related to hiking. The first possibility is to follow the paved road that climbs up to Ponte Maria and Ragada with a series of hairpin bends.

L'altra possibilità è invece quella di continuare a seguire il Sentiero delle Cascate (che comincia a destra del parcheggio, a ridosso della strada), un tratto nel bosco decisamente impegnativo per via del dislivello. Al termine sarete arrivati alla base della Val Folgorida. Qui sorge un piccolo paesino (Todesca-Ragada), troverete camminando ancora un pochino le cascate Folgarida e soprattutto la scenografica Chiesetta della Madonna, la nostra meta finale. Sulle cascate Folgarida dobbiamo fare un doveroso mea culpa. Eravamo troppo intenti nel seguire il percorso che ci siamo dimenticati di visitarle. Per farlo, infatti, è necessario deviare (per circa 5 minuti) dal Sentiero delle Cascate, ma il fascino di quella valle e la stanchezza per i km percorsi in salita ci ha fatto completamente perdere la bussola... Noi ci siamo fermati qui, con circa 8 km percorsi che sarebbero poi diventati 16 dovendo tornare al rifugio Fontanabona dove avevamo parcheggiato la nostra vettura, ma i più avventurosi potranno continuare sino a Malga Bedole...

The other possibility is to continue following the Waterfall Trail (which begins to the right of the parking lot, close to the road), a pretty challenging stretch in the woods due to the elevation gain. At the end of this stretch,  the Val Folgorida appears in front of you. Here there is a small village (Todesca-Ragada), the Folgarida waterfalls and  above all the scenic Church of the Madonna, our final destination. We have to say mea culpa while talking about the Folgarida Waterfalls. We were, in fact, so intent on following the right path that we completely missed the quick detour to the falls. We stopped here, at the small church and went back to the parking lot: if you follow us, this is a 15 km hike. The more adventurous can continue up to Malga Bedole ...

La terza giornata non solo è stata quella dello sconfinamento in Alto Adige Sud Tirol, ma anche e soprattutto quella che ci ha ricordato una delle "regole non scritte" del viaggiatore on the road, ovvero svegliarsi presto e cominciare l'esplorazioni dei luoghi prescelti di buonora. E' ciò che invece non abbiamo fatto noi (un errore che poi, nell'arco del viaggio, non ripeteremo più), presentandoci al ponte sospeso "Ragaiolo" "solo" alle 9 del mattino. La conseguenza? Il parcheggio dedicato era ovviamente già pieno (Area Sosta Camper - "Al Plan" – Rabbi, strada provinciale 86) e parcheggiare alla seconda area dedicata, lontana più di 2 km (parcheggio Coler) ci avrebbe fatto perdere troppo tempo in vista del proseguo della giornata. A malincuore abbiamo dovuto resistere, rinunciando alla visita del ponte sospeso che attraversa il Torrente Rabbi.

The third day in the italian region of Trentino Alto Adige wasn't just about the encroachment upon Alto Adige Sud Tirol, but also and above all the one that reminded us of one of the "unwritten rules" of an the road. That is to wake up early and begin the exploration of the chosen places before 8 am. This is exactly what we did not do (a mistake that we will never repeat during the rest of the journey), approaching the "Ragaiolo" suspension bridge at 9 am. What was the consequence? The parking lot dedicated to the Ragaiolo suspension bridge trail was obviously already full (Area Sosta Camper - "Al Plan" - Rabbi, provincial road 86) and the second parking lot area (Coler car park) which is located 2 km away would have waste a lot of our time. Reluctantly we had to resist, giving up the visit of the suspension bridge that crosses the Rabbi stream.

BURRONE DI FONDO E LAGO SMERALDO, GIOIELLINI DELLA VAL DI NON

Poco male, perchè a circa 40 km ad est, non lontano ormai da Bolzano, c'è un'altra passeggiata adatta a tutti e che certamente non vi deluderà. Quella che dal centro del paese (Fondo, nella Val di Non), conduce al lago smeraldo, uno dei gioiellini meglio conservati dell'intera Val di Non. Il nome esatto del breve e semplice sentiero è "passeggiata del Burrone di Fondo", un percorso di 2 km tra andata e ritorno (considerate un'oretta di tempo per percorrerlo, compreso il giro intorno al lago Smeraldo) che parte dal centro storico del paese, esattamente dalla piazza San Giovann. Sulla destra, vicino alla chiesa, seguite la stradina che passa sotto ad un piccolo ponte (dove trovate già l’indicazione per il Lago Smeraldo) e quindi il burrone di Fondo vero e proprio.

But not bad, because about 40 km to the east, not far from Bolzano, there is another little hike suitable for everyone and that certainly will not disappoint you. The one that from downtown Fondo, in the Val di Non, leads to the emerald lake, one of the best preserved gems of the entire Val di Non. The exact name of the short and simple 2 km round trip trail (it takes about an hour to cover it, including the loop trail around Lake Smeraldo) is "Passeggiata del Burrone di Fondo" which starts from the historic center of the town, exactly from the piaza San Giovann. On the right, close to the church, follow the road that passes under a small bridge (where you'll immediately notice the "canyon Rio Sass sign") and then leads to the canyon walls.

Vi troverete tra le pareti del canyon e, soprattutto in estate, non disdegnerete il fresco che vi accompagnerà per tutto il tragitto. Al vostro fianco scorrono le acque del Rio Sass, che è poi il fiume che da il nome all'intero canyon (Canyon Rio Sass).

You will find yourself among the walls of the canyon and, especially in summer, you will not disdain the coolness that will accompany you throughout the journey. The Rio Sass, which is the river that gives its name to the entire canyon (Canyon Rio Sass), flows next to you.

La prima attrazione (sulla sinistra) sarà il vecchio mulino, appoggiato ad una delle pareti del canyon, poi, quando il canyon si restringerà, sarà una passerella ad accompagnarvi nella parte sicuramente più affascinante del percorso. L’ultimo tratto della passeggiata del burrone di Fondo è una scalinata che sale accanto ad una cascata e che ti porta su, sul sentiero che gira intorno al lago Smeraldo, che già dal nome potrete facilmente intuire essere di color... smeraldo. Il percorso è semplice ed adatto anche ai bambini. 

The first attraction (on the left) is the old mill, leaning against one of the canyon walls. Then, when the canyon walls get narrow, you'll notice a walkway that leads tp the most fascinating part of the trail. The last stretch of the Burrone di Foondo hike is a stairway that climbs next to a waterfall and takes you up, on the loop path around the Emerald Lake. as you might easily guess, its name is "Smeraldo" because of ots emerald waters. This quick and simple hike is perfect for families and children.

ALLA SCOPERTA DEL VINO DEL TRENTINO ALTO ADIGE - QUALCHE CONSIGLIO

Un viaggio che si rispetti in Trentino Alto Adige non può prescindere da una visita ad una delle tante cantine vinicole di un'area che a conti fatti è una delle principali produttrici di vino dell'intera Italia. che sia una bollicina o un buon rosso, il Trentino Alto Adige farà al caso vostro. Noi, tra quelle che ci sono state consigliate da un profondo conoscitore del vino e della regione vinicola, abbiamo scelto di visitare la cantina Arunda Sektkellerei, il top quando si parla di bollicine trentine. Dove siamo? Non lontano dal Burrone di Fondo e da Bolzano, non lontano neppure dal passo della Mendola e dalla sua bellissima funicolare della mendola, che con una pendenza del 64%, è una delle più ripide e lunghe d'Europa. Noi però siamo qui per il vino, esattamente nel paesino di Meltina, in provincia di Bolzano, per visitare una cantina, Arunda, appunto, fondata nel 1979 e produttrice di 130mila bottiglie all'anno. La qualità dei vini (tutti metodo classico) è molto alta, ovviamente anche i prezzi rispecchiano il valore del vino. L'azienda offre degustazioni tutti i giorni dal lunedì al sabato.

DISCOVERING TRENTINO ALTO ADIGE'S BEST WINE - SOME ADVICE

A self-respecting trip to Trentino Alto Adige cannot be separated from a visit to one of the many wineries in an area which, on balance, is one of the main wine producers in Italy. whether it is a sparkling or a good red wine, Trentino Alto Adige will be right place for wine lovers. Among the wineries recommended to us by a deep knowledge of wine and especially of this wine region, we decided to visit the Arunda Sektkellerei winery, the top when it comes to Trentino sparkling wine. Where are we now? Not far from the Burrone di Fondo and from Bolzano, not far also from the Mendola pass and its beautiful Mendola funicular, which is one of the steepest (64%) and longest in Europe. But we are here for the wine, in the village of Meltina, in the province of Bolzano: Arunda, which was founded in 1979, produces 130 thousand bottles a year. The quality of the wines (all traditional method) is very high, obviously prices also reflect the value of the wine. The winery offers tastings every day from Monday to Saturday.

Se invece siete alla ricerca di cantine che offrono vini a prezzi più contenuti, ci sentiamo di consigliare per Mezzocorona la cantina Martinelli, (fondata nel 1980 - 15.000 bottiglie all'anno) per l'ottimo Teroldego, e Pedrotti (1901 - 50.000 bottiglie) per lo spumante (il paese è Nomi, in provincia di Trento). Nella zona di Bolzano invece Strasserhof (2003, 50.000 bottiglie), con i suoi bianchi fermi (soprattutto il Sylvaner), situato a Novacella non lontano dalla famosa abbazia. Se amate i bianchi fermi non dimenticatevi anche Villscheiderhof (1997 - 30.000 bottiglie) per l'ottimo Riesling (Bressanone). Ultimo, ma non per importanza, la Tenuta Nicolussi-Leck(rossi e bianchi fermi), situata a Caldaro nel cuore della "Strada del vino". 

LAGO DI CAREZZA, DOVE LA NATURA INCONTRA LA LEGGENDA

Val d'Ega, a 1534 metri sul livello del mare. A circa 25 km da Bolzano. E' qui, incastonato tra i boschi di abeti, che spicca lo splendido lago di Carezza (Karersee in tedesco), uno dei tanti bellissimi laghi dell'Alto Adige. Ormai, dopo aver visitato il lago di Tovel, le aspettative sono alte e dobbiamo ammettere che, seppur piccolo rispetto agli altri laghi che abbiamo visitato, quello di Carezza non ci ha davvero deluso. Il lago "Arcobaleno", per via delle  "Caricaceae", famiglia di piante dalle foglie larghe lobate, è alimentato da sorgenti sotterranee ed è piuttosto freddo: il massimo della temperatura delle sue acque è, infatti di soli 13 gradi. Come raggiungere e come visitare il lago di Carezza? Dei numerosi laghi alpini che abbiamo visitato durante questo on the road, il Lago di Carezza non ha necessitato di particolari studi. E' talmente piccolo e facile da raggiungere che è davvero impossibile sbagliare. Dovrete, da Bolzano, imboccare la trafficata (attenzione agli orari in cui la percorrete) Strada Statale 241 che s'inerpica sino a Carezza e quindi al lago. Una volta raggiunto il lago, sulla sinistra (se state provenendo da Bolzano), troverete il parcheggio a pagamento. Il consiglio che vi diamo è di effettuare il giro del lago in senso orario: per completarlo non impiegherete più di mezz'ora, sosta per le foto comprese. Qual è l'orario migliore per visitare il lago di Carezza? Anche in una giornata di sole, il lago cambia il suo volto durante la giornata. L'orario migliore, secondo noi, è nel pomeriggio dopo le 16.30, o in alternativa al mattino presto. 

If, on the other hand, you are looking for wineries that sell wines at lower prices, we would like to recommend the Martinelli winery in Mezzocorona, (founded in 1980 - 15,000 bottles produced every year) for itsexcellent Teroldego, and Pedrotti (1901 - 50,000 bottles) for sparkling wine (in the town is Nomi, in the province of Trento). In the Bolzano area you shouldn't miss Strasserhof (2003, 50,000 bottles), with its white wines (especially Sylvaner), located in Novacella not far from the famous abbey. LAKE CAREZZA, WHERE NATURE MEETS THE LEGEND

Val d'Ega, 1534 meters above sea level. About 25 km east of Bolzano. It is here, nestled among the fir woods, that one of the most beautiful lakes in South Tyrol stands out, the splendid Lake Carezza (Karersee in German language).  Now, after visiting Lake Tovel, expectations are even higher and we must admit that, although it's smaller compared to the other famous lake in the Dolomites, that of Carezza is very, very beautiful. The "Arcobaleno" lake, due to the "Caricaceae", a family of plants with broad lobed leaves, is fed by underground springs and is rather cold: the maximum temperature of its waters is, in fact, only 13 degrees celsius. How to reach and how to visit Lake Carezza? Of the many alpine lakes that we visited during this on the road, Lake Carezza did not require any particular studies. It is so small and easy to reach: you can't really go wrong or get lost. From Bolzano, you will have to take the busy Strada Statale 241 which climbs up to Carezza and then to the lake. Once you get to the lake, if you are coming from Bolzano, you'll immediately notice the parking lot (for a fee) on your left. We recommend to hike the loop trail around the lake in a clockwise direction: it takes about half an hour to complete it, including the many stop for photos. What is the best time of the day to visit Lake Carezza? Even on a sunny day, the lake changes its face throughout the day. The best time, in our opinion, is in the afternoon after 4.30, or alternatively early in the morning.

Che il lago di Carezza sia stupendo (tanto da diventare un must quando si visita il Trentino Alto Adige) è ormai risaputo, ma non tutti sanno che dietro questo piccolo ma splendido specchio d'acqua si nasconde una leggenda tanto cara agli altoatesini e capace di ispirare numerosi poeti e scrittori. Pare, infatti, che la bellezza di questo lago derivino dalla leggenda della bellissima Ondina, una ninfa che ne abitava le sue acque. Lo stregone del Latemar se ne era innamorato: tentò più volte di rapirla e un giorno, consigliato dalla Stria del Masarè, fece apparire sopra il Lago di Carezza un bellissimo arcobaleno allo scopo di attrarre la ninfa. Quando lei uscì dalle acque vide lo stregone e fuggì spaventata ed il mago, di tutta fretta, prese l'arcobaleno e lo gettò nel lago. Da quel giorno nelle acque del lago di Carezza si rispecchiano tutti i colori dell'iride..

It is well known that Lake Carezza is wonderful (so much so that it's a must when visiting Trentino Alto Adige), but not everyone knows that behind this small but splendid body of water lies a legend so dear to the South Tyroleans and capable of inspire numerous poets and writers. It seems, in fact, that the beauty of this lake comes from the legend of the beautiful Ondina, a nymph who inhabited its waters. The Latemar sorcerer had fallen in love with her: he tried to kidnap her several times and one day, advised by the Stria del Masarè, he made a beautiful rainbow appear above Lake Carezza in order to attract the nymph. But when the nymph came out of the water and saw the wizard, she was frightened and ran away. The magician, in a hurry, took the rainbow and threw it into the lake. Since that day, all the colors of the rainbow have been reflected in the waters of Lake Carezza.

COSA VEDERE A BOLZANO? ECCO UN MINI-TOUR A PIEDI DELLA CITTA'

Nota per essere la città italiana con una delle qualità di vita più alte, ma anche per essere la capitale altoatesina dello shopping, Bolzano è tranquilla e vivibile, ma allo stesso tempo animata e viva, soprattutto durante i week end. Se siete alla ricerca di un brevissimo tour a piedi della città, consigliamo di partire dal Duomo e da Piazza Walther, il principale luogo di convivialità per gli abitanti della città. Qui si tengono i mercatini di natale, qui ci sono bar e ristoranti ed è di fatto il centro della vita mondana bolzanina. Il secondo stop che consigliamo è ovviamente via Portici, l'antica via del commercio di Bolzano. Sotto i portici, appunto, una lunga fila di negozi, dalle più alte firme ai più accessibili negozietti artigianali. Poco lontano noterete Piazza delle Erbe e la Fontana del Tritone: è qui che da 800 anni si svolge il mercato ed è una delle vie più vive della città. 

WHAT TO SEE IN BOLZANO? HERE IS A MINI WALK TOUR OF THE CITY

Known for being the Italian city with one of the highest quality of life, but also for being the South Tyrolean capital of shopping, Bolzano is quiet and livable, but at the same time lively, especially during the weekends. If you are looking for a very short walking tour of the city, we recommend to start from the Duomo and from Piazza Walther, the main convivial space for the inhabitants of the city. Here the Christmas markets are held, here there are bars and restaurants: it's the center of the social life of Bolzano. The second stop we recommend is obviously via Portici, the ancient trade route of Bolzano. Under the arcades, in fact, you'll see a long line of shops, from the highest brands to the most accessible craft shops. Not far from the "portici", there's Piazza delle Erbe and the Triton Fountain: this is where the market has been taking place for 800 years and is one of the liveliest streets in the city.

BOLZANO, DOVE CENARE E DORMIRE

Se siete alla ricerca di una birreria, a Bolzano le due mete da non perdere sono Ca de Bezzi e Hopfen & Co. Noi abbiamo scelto di vivere ancor di più Bolzano, fermandoci per un piccolo aperitivo da Enovit Vinoteque e poi per la cena nel cuore di Piazza delle Erbe, la via più viva di Bolzano. Eravamo alla ricerca di specialità tipiche tirolesi ed al ristorante Anita ci siamo sentiti come a casa. Promosso. Per quanto riguarda invece il pernottamento, abbiamo preferito evitare la ben più cara Bolzano, spostandoci nelle collinette appena ad est della città. Il paesino è Andriano, l'hotel è Hotel Stamserhof (104 euro a notte per camera- colazione compresa) che non ci ha soddisfatto appieno. Se da una parte il personale della reception è stato con noi gentilissimo, la camera posizionata proprio sopra il ristorante ha fatto si che non potessimo dormire sino a mezzanotte, ovvero quando il locale ha chiuso. E quando ti devi svegliare alle 6 del mattino non è proprio il massimo...

BOLZANO, WHERE TO DINE AND SLEEP

If you are looking for a brewery, in Bolzano the two destinations not to be missed are Ca de Bezzi and Hopfen & Co. However, we decided to experience Bolzano even more fully: a quick happy hour at Enovit Vinoteque and then a typical dinner in the heart of Piazza delle Erbe, the liveliest street in Bolzano. We were looking for typical Tyrolean specialties and at the Anita restaurant we felt at home. Good choice. As for the overnight stay, we preferred to avoid the much more expensive Bolzano: the hills just east of the city are just much better. The village is Andriano, the hotel is Hotel Stamserhof (104 euros per night per room - breakfast included) which did not fully satisfy us. While the staff was very kind, the room located right above the restaurant meant that we could not sleep until midnight. And when you have to wake up at 6 in the morning, well...that's not exactly the best ...

Exploring the Dolomites: 10 days in Trentino Alto Adige (Italy) and Tirol (Austria). Day 4 Bolzano - Brunico

Avendo scelto di visitare il Trentino Aldo Adige in "modalità on the road americano", non è stato sicuramente facile scegliere quale giornata, e soprattutto quale tappa, dedicare al trekking. Lo sapete, fermandosi per più giorni in un'intera area è sicuramente molto più facile pescare nel mazzo dei mille sentieri del trekking, ma trovandoci in continuo spostamento abbiamo deciso di tentare la sorte. Qual è il miglior sentiero in Trentino Alto Adige? Noi, la risposta non ce l'abbiamo, ma siamo sicuri che il Sentiero delle Odle, nel Parco Naturale Puez-Odle può essere tranquillamente collocato nella top 10 dei migliori sentieri delle Dolomiti. Ma andiamo con ordine. Da Bolzano ci stiamo spostando verso est, destinazione Brunico, ma per farlo abbiamo scelto di non percorrere l'autostrada del Brennero e poi la Provinciale Strada Val Pusteria, preferendo fare i passi di montagna, ben più impegnativi ma capaci di regalare viste splendide. Una delle possibilità sarebbe stata quella di visitare la bellissima Alpe di Siusi, ma per questo altopiano, una delle meravigli naturali più affascinanti delle Dolomiti avremmo dovuto aver a disposizione molti più giorni della singola giornata che invece possiamo spendere in queste latitudini. Da lì la scelta di raggiungere il Parco Puez Odle e percorrere il Sentiero delle Odle, uno degli highlight della spedizione dolomitica...

LUNGHEZZA PERCORSO: 108 km

DURATA: 2 ore e 20 minuti

Having chosen to visit Trentino Aldo Adige like an american on the road, it was certainly not easy to choose which day (and which stage) would be perfect for a day hike. You know, stopping for several days in an entire area, really helps hikers in the search of the trail to hike: Dolomites, in fact, offers thousand of hiking trail and you cannot really miss the choice.  Which is the best trail in Trentino Alto Adige? We do not have the answer, but we are sure that the Sentiero delle Odle, in the Puez-Odle Natural Park, can easily be placed in the top 10 of the best trails in the Dolomites. But first things first. From Bolzano, we are moving eastwards, destination Brunico: we skipped the Brennero Highway and then the Provincial Road Val Pusteria, preferring to drive  the mountain passes, which are much more demanding but also enchanting. We could have visited the amazing Alpe di Siusi, but this plateau, which is one of the most fascinating natural wonders of the Dolomites, requires many more days. This is why we dediced to reach the Puez Odle Natural Park and hiked the Sentiero Delle Odle Adolf Munkel trail, one of the highlights of the on the road.

SENTIERO DELLE ODLE ADOLF MUNKEL, TUTTO QUELLO CHE C'E' DA SAPERE

Per raggiungere Malga Zannes, da dove prende il via il Sentiero delle Odle, dovrete avventurarvi nel cuore della Val di Funes ed attraversare la splendida Santa Magdalena (di cui parleremo più avanti), sino a raggiungere Malga Zannes (via Zanser, Funes): qui lascerete l'auto nel parcheggio custodito (a pagamento) e comincerete l'avventura in uno dei tanti sentieri (tutti ben segnalati) che si diramano lungo le Odle. La nostra scelta è ricaduta sul Sentiero Delle Odle Adolf Munkel, uno splendido percorso di 13 km che abbiamo percorso in poco più di 4 ore, soste comprese. 

 EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE 

"SENTIERO DELLE ODLE ADOLF MUNKEL" TRAIL

You will have to venture into the heart of the Val di Funes and cross the splendid town of Santa Magdalena (we will talk about it later), until you reach Malga Zannes (via Zanser, Funes), where the trail begins. Leave your car in the huge parking lot (for a fee) and begin the adventure on one of the many paths (all well marked) that branch off along the Odle mountains. We dediced to hike the Sentiero Delle Odle Adolf Munkel, a 13 km loop trail that we hiked in 4 hours. Stops included.

Onestamente, complici i diversi sentieri che s'intrecciano, non siamo sicuri di aver percorso il sentiero Adolf Munkel nella sua interezza, ma onestamente cambia poco. Qualunque percorso deciderete di seguire, non rimarrete delusi. A farvi compagnia una grande varietà di vegetazione...

Honestly, thanks to the different paths that intertwine, we are not sure if we hiked the entire Adolf Munkel trail, but honestly it doesn't matter. Whatever path you decide to follow, you will not be disappointed. A wide variety of vegetation keeps you company...

(Malga Casnago)

Si parte appunto da Malga Zannes, a 1680 metri sul livello del mare, e si sale continuamente fino ai 2006 metri di Malga Casnago. In apertura di faranno compagnia i bellissimi pascoli di Gampenalm, poi si comincerà a fare davvero sul serio addentrandosi nel bosco. Tra i pini e gli abeti comincerete a notare la imponente parete delle Odle, il primo grande traguardo del sentiero delle Odle Adolf Munkel. Lasciato il segnavia numero 6, ci si addentra nel vero e proprio Sentiero Adolf Munkel (numero 36) che, idealmente, procede proprio verso le Odle, addentrandosi sempre di più nel Parco Naturale che porta il loro nome.

The trail begins at Malga Zannes (1680 meters above sea level), and climbs continuously up to the 2006 meters of Malga Casnago. At the beginning, the beautiful pastures of Gampenalm will keep hikers company; then you come into the woods till you get very close to Odle wall. Among pines and firs hikers will notice the imposing wall of the Odle, the first major goal of the Odle Adolf Munkel trail. Leaving the signpost number 6, you enter the real Adolf Munkel Trail (number 36) which, ideally, proceeds right towards the Odle, penetrating more and more into the Natural Park that bears their name.

La parte più affascinante di questo sentiero circolare è quando si arriva proprio sotto alle Odle, un'enorme parete rocciosa paradiso per gli amanti dell'arrampicata. Il sentiero, seppur trafficato, anche in estate lascia spazio per godersi in solitudine queste bellezze naturali con pochissimi eguali, ed anche e soprattutto la possibilità di scattare foto più o meno artistiche.

The most fascinating part of this loop trail is when you get to the Odle, a huge rock face paradise for climbing lovers. The path, although heavily trafficked, allows hikers to enjoy all these natural beauties in solitude and also and above let hikers take artistic photos.

Una volta raggiunta la parete delle Odle comincia di fatto il ritorno verso Malga Zannes. Qui incontrerete diverse altre malghe a seconda del sentiero che percorrerete, noi abbiamo scelgo di seguire il sentiero che conduce verso Malga Casnago attraverso uno splendido pascolo. Non esageriamo dicendo che la vista più bella di tutto il percorso l'abbiamo avuta qui, con le Odle sempre a fare da sfondo. Tra un panino allo speck ed un kaiserschmarren, ovvero la "frittata dell'imperatore", tipico dolce tirolese ed austriaco, onestamente non vorremmo più andarcene. La giornata di sole e le sdraio in legno che regalano una splendida vista sulle Odle fanno il resto...

Once you get to the Odle rock wall, it's time to come back to the starting point of the trail, Malga Zannes. You're about to encounter many other alpine huts depending on the path you'll follow. We decided to follow the trail that leads to Malga Casnago (2006 meters above the sea level) through a splendid pasture. We're not exaggerate by saying that the most beautiful view of the entire trail is right there, with the Odle mountains always in the background. Between a speck sandwich and a kaiserschmarren, or the "omelet of the emperor", a typical Tyrolean and Austrian dessert, we honestly wouldn't want to leave. The sunny day and the wooden deckchairs that offer a splendid view of the Odle do the rest ...

SANTA MAGDALENA, UNA CITTADINA FIABESCA

Per gli amanti della fotografia Santa Magdalena è uno dei dieci luoghi imperdibili dell'Alto Adige. No, non stiamo esagerando, perchè la piccola cittadina di quasi 400 anime situata ai piedi delle Odle (vicinissima al Sentiero delle Odle di cui abbiamo parlato sopra), offre davvero un panorama da cartolina, verrebbe da dire fiabesco. Prendetevi qualche ora per esplorare le viette del piccolo paesino, oppure spingetevi fino alla chiesetta, la quale venne costruita esattamente nel luogo in cui, secondo una leggenda, il Rio Fopal trascinò a valle il dipinto raffigurante Santa Maddalena. Non lontano, non perdetevi neppure la chiesetta San Giovanni a Ranui, famosa per la sua posizione suggestiva e il paesaggio dolomitico che la circonda. Ma se volete scattare la foto da cartolina che trovate su google dovrete fare un po' di fatica, quella che noi non abbiamo voluto fare complice la stanchezza derivante dai 13 km spesi lungo il sentiero delle Odle. Esiste, infatti, un view point, imperdibile davvero per gli amanti della fotografia, ma la strada non è percorribile dalle automobili. Dovrete lasciare l'auto in paese oppure al Centro Visite del Parco Naturale Puez-Odle e percorrere a piedi i circa 2 km in salita lungo Magdalenaweg sino a raggiungere il punto panoramico "Santa Magdalena". Le foto che trovate su internet vengono scattate proprio da qui. 

SANTA MAGDALENA, A FAIRY TALE TOWN

For photography lovers, Santa Magdalena is one of the ten unmissable places in South Tyrol. No, we are not exaggerating, because the small town (almost 400 inhabitants) located at the foot of the Odle mountains (very close to the Sentiero delle Odle we talked about above), really offers a postcard view, one could say it seems to be in a fairytale. Take a few hours to explore the alleys of the small village, or visit the church, which was built exactly in the place where, according to legend, the Rio Fopal dragged the painting depicting Santa Maddalena downstream. Not far away, do not miss the San Giovanni church in Ranui, which is famous for its suggestive position and the surrounding Dolomite landscape. But if you want to take the postcard photo you find on google when writing "Santa Magdalena Trentino Alto Adige", you will have to do a bit of effort. After walking for 13 km, we were really tired, this is why we skipped the 2 km trail that leads to the view point. If you want to get there (cars are not allowed), leave your car in downtown or at the visitor center of the Puez-Odle Natural Park parking lot and walk (uphill) along Magdalenaweg until you reach the "Santa Magdalena viewpoint". La nostra destinazione finale è Brunico, ma per raggiungerla, come abbiamo già anticipato, abbiamo scelto di evitare l'autostrada e percorrere il passo delle Erbe. Ecco, questa stradina davvero stretta non è è consigliata ai deboli di cuore, ma ha regalato scorci sulle Odle davvero impareggiabili. Brunico invece si è rivelata essere molto, molto bella e vivace, soprattutto il suo centro storico. Qui, è davvero immancabile una sosta da Acherer Patisserie Blumen, pasticceria situata proprio nel cuore dell'interessantissimo centro storico della città. Noi siamo stati fortunati, perchè Andreas Acherer non solo era presente in pasticceria, ma preparava al momento dei favolosi canederli dolci all'albicocca. Fenomenali. Per quei pochi che ancora non lo conoscessero, Andreas Acherer è ormai diventato un pasticcere di fama mondiale, ancor di più dopo aver fatto da giudice in un'edizione di Best Bakery, un programma televisivo che proclama la miglior pasticceria d'Italia. Il locale di Brunico è fantastico, perchè unisce le passioni di Andreas (la pasticceria) e di sua moglie (fiorista). Nota finale. Siamo rimasti sorpresi in positivo non solo dalla qualità dei prodotti (ma non avevamo dubbi), ma anche e soprattutto dai prezzi, abbondantemente nella media. Per le due notti a Brunico abbiamo scelto una sistemazione economica, senza troppi fronzoli. Ci siamo spostati a Marebbe (15 minuti da Brunico) e la scelta è ricaduta sull'Albergo Gader, un albergo strategico a livello di posizione, in vista della giornata successiva in cui visiteremo il Lago di Braies. 

The final destination is Brunico. As we have already mentioned, we decided to skip the motorway and drove along the Passo delle Erbe to get there. Here, this really narrow road is not recommended for the faint of heart, but it offers truly incomparable glimpses of the Odle mountains. Brunico, on the other hand, turned out to be very, very beautiful and lively, especially its historic downtown. Here, a stop at Acherer Patisserie Blumen is a must: it's a pastry shop located right in the heart of the very interesting historic downtown of the city. We were lucky, because Andreas Acherer was in the bakery preparing a fabolous sweet apricot dumplings. That was delicious! For those who still don't know him, Andreas Acherer has now become a world-famous pastry chef: he is also a judge in the italian tv show "Best Bakery", a television show that proclaims the best bakery in Italy. His bakery in Brunico is amazing: it  combines Andreas' (pastry) and his wife (florist) passions. Final note. We were positively surprised not only by the quality of the products (we had no doubts about that), but also and above all by the low prices. We decided to spend two nights here in Brunico. Well, to be honest, we skipped the town of Brunico because it was very expensive. We moved to Marebbe (15 minutes south of Brunico) and stayed at the Albergo Gader, which is located in a strategic position.

Exploring the Dolomites: 10 days in Trentino Alto Adige (Italy) and Tirol (Austria). Day 5: Brunico - Brunico

Il day 5 può tranquillamente essere definito come il giorno dei laghi. Già, perchè ne abbiamo visti addirittura cinque, uno più bello dell'altro, in una giornata decisamente impegnativa ma ricca di bellezze naturali di livello assoluto. Da Brunico ci siamo spostati verso est lungo la strada statale 49, per ammirare il lago di montagna più famoso d'Italia, il Lago di Braies, e poi ancora gli altrettanto affascinanti  Lago di Dobbiaco, Lago di Landro e Lago di Misurina. Ma, non contenti, ci siamo spinti anche fino al profondo nord, a pochi metri dal confine con l'Austria, lungo la strada provinciale 44, per quello che a tutti gli effetti è il lago che (a sorpresa) ci è piaciuto di più, quello di Anterselva. In mezzo, ovviamente anche tanta buona cucina, anzi la migliore cucina ladina...

Day 5 can easily be defined as the day of the lakes. Yes, because we have even seen five lakes, each one more beautiful than the last, in a very demanding day which has also been full of natural beauty. From Brunico we moved east along the state road 49, to admire the most famous alpine lake in Italy, Lake Braies, and then again the equally fascinating Lake Dobbiaco, Lake Landro and Lake Misurina. And, not satisfied, we also went as far as the deep north, a few meters far from the border with Austria, along the provincial road 44, for the lake that (surprisingly) we liked the most, that of Anterselva. In between, obviously also a lot of good cuisine, indeed the best Ladin cuisine ...

COME VISITARE IL LAGO DI BRAIES, LA PERLA DELLE DOLOMITI

Non abbiamo dubbi che, almeno una volta nella vita, vi siate imbattuti nelle foto di questo lago, la cui popolarità negli ultimi 10-15 anni è cresciuta in modo esponenziale, tanto da fargli perdere un po' di quella sana magia che circonda da sempre i laghi alpini. No, il lago di Braies non è un lago come gli altri, è semplicemente il lago alpino più famoso d'Italia, tanto da guadagnarsi il nickname di "La perla delle Dolomiti". Dove siamo? il una piccola valle laterale della Val Pusteria, 1496 metri sul livello del mare, con il parco Naturale Fanes-Sennes-Braies a fare da sfondo. Uno sfondo con pochissimi eguali.

 HOW TO VISIT LAKE BRAIES, THE PEARL OF THE DOLOMITES

We have no doubt that, at least once in your life, you have come across the photos of this lake, whose popularity in the last 10-15 years has grown exponentially, so much so that it has lost some of that healthy magic that has always surrounded all the alpine lakes. No, Lake Braies is not a lake like any others, it is simply the most famous alpine lake in Italy, so much so that it has earned the nickname of "The pearl of the Dolomites". Where are we? In the a small side valley of the Val Pusteria, 1496 meters above sea level, with the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park in the background. A background with very few equals.

Braies, Pragser Wildsee in tedesco, è stupendo, ma onestamente non più degli altri sette laghi che abbiamo visitato durante la spedizione tra le Dolomiti italiane e austriache. Perchè allora è così famoso? Certamente ha influito la serie televisiva Un Passo dal Cielo con Terence Hill, che proprio sulle sponde del lago ha vissuto la sua principale ambientazione. Anzi, diciamo pure che è stata la principale causa dell'"overtourism" che sta caratterizzando il lago di Braies soprattutto in estate quando, dopo le 10 del mattino, diventa già invivibile. 

Braies, Pragser Wildsee in German language, is gorgeous, but honestly no more than the other seven lakes we visited during the road trip. Why is it so famous then? The italian television series Un Passo dal Cielo with Terence Hill certainly had an impact, as its main setting was located on the shores of the lake. Indeed, let's say that it was the main cause of the overtourism that is characterizing Lake Braies, especially in summer. You have to know that, after 10 am, it becomes unlivable.

Ed è per questo che noi ci siamo presentati di buonora (alle 8 circa), per gorderci appieno un lago che, senza la folla, offre uno scenario davvero splendido. Anche in questo caso, come già accaduto per il lago di Tovel, almeno per l'estate 2020 è obbligatorio acquistare il ticket del parcheggio online, che permette di attraversare la valle e raggiungere le sponde del lago. Esistono diversi tipi di tickets, il più costoso permette di parcheggiare direttamente al lago. E' possibile anche arrivare tramite bus e tutte le info le potrete trovare direttamente sul sito ufficiale del lago: https://www.prags.bz/it/.

And that's why we showed up very early (around 8 am) to fully enjoy a lake which, without the crowds, offers a truly splendid setting. At Braies, as already happened for Lake Tovel it is mandatory to purchase the parking ticket online (at least for the summer of 2020), which allow visitors to cross the valley and reach the shores of the lake. There are different types of tickets, the most expensive allows you to park directly at the lake. It is also possible to get to the lake by bus and all the info can be found directly on the official website of the lake: https://www.prags.bz/it/.

Per molti turisti, un’esperienza davvero irrinunciabile è quella di fare un giro in barca sul lago (che, ricordiamo, non è balneabile), grazie alle barchette a remi (che contengono fino a 4 persone) disponibili al costo di 25 euro all'ora. Noi abbiamo preferito camminare, percorrendo in senso anti-orario i 3.6 km del perimetro del lago. Una scelta ancora una volta vincente e che consigliamo quella di percorrere il sentiero che costeggia lo specchio d'acqua da destra, partendo dunque dall'hotel e dal set di A un passo dal Cielo, con la chiesetta della Madonna e l’edificio che è stato la location della Stazione forestale. 

For many tourists, a truly unmissable experience is the boat ride on the lake (which is not suitable for swimming), thanks to the rowing boats (up to 4 people per boat) available at a cost of 25 euros per hour. We preferred to walk around the lake (3.6 km) in an anti-clockwise direction. Once again a winning choice and we recommend you take the path that runs along the lake on the the right, starting from the hotel and the set of A un passo dal Cielo, with the church of the Madonna and the building that was the location of the Forest Station.

The most fascinating part of the hike around the lake comes after 1 mile: the path, after reaching some beautiful beaches, moves away a little from the shore. It winds through the rock and returns to the starting point, that is the pier where you can rent the boat.

IL LAGO DI DOBBIACO E LA ZONA DELLE TRE CIME 

Lasciata Braies ci si avventura in quella che comunemente viene definita la "Zona delle Tre Cime", il cui cuore pulsante è decisamente la pittoresca cittadina di Dobbiaco, circondata da massicci montani imponenti e dalle due aree protette del Parco Naturale di Fanes-Senes-Braies e del Parco Naturale delle Tre Cime. Le principali attrazioni della cittadina sono la Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista (1764-1774) e l'adiacente Castello Herbstenburg, ma tra gli stop da non mancare assolutamente c'è assolutamente la Latteria Tre Cime Mondolatte (Pustertaler Straße, 3c, 39034 Dobbiaco), un autentico paradiso per gli amanti del latte e dei prodotti caseari. Formaggio, latte fresco, burro, panna, yogurt... al Caseificio-Museo Tre Cime potrete davvero scoprire come si lavora il latte. LAKE DOBBIACO AND THE AREA OF THE "TRE CIME"

Leaving Braies we venture into what is commonly called the "Zona delle Tre Cime", whose beating heart is definitely the picturesque town of Dobbiaco, surrounded by imposing mountain massifs and two protected areas: the Fanes-Senes-Braies Natural Park and the Tre Cime Natural Park. The main attractions of the town are the Church of San Giovanni Battista (1764-1774) and the adjacent Herbstenburg Castle, but visitors shouldn't also miss the Latteria Tre Cime Mondolatte (Pustertaler Straße, 3c, 39034 Dobbiaco) a true paradise for milk and dairy products lovers. Cheese, fresh milk, butter, cream, yogurt ... at the Tre Cime Dairy-Museum you can really discover how milk is processed. You can visit the shop or take a tasting tour: if you are interested, you can book it directly on their website (https://3zinnen.it/it).

Ad una manciata di km a sud di Dobbiaco si erge l'omonimo lago, un altro dei must quando si visita questa parte di Alto Adige. Anche qui potrete lasciare la vostra vettura a ridosso del lago (parcheggio a pagamento, spesso molto affollato), oppure potrete fare come noi, ovvero parcheggiare nell'enorme parcheggio della Nordic Arena (Via al lago 16, Dobbiaco) e seguire via al lago (che poi diventa Lunga via delle Dolomiti, una strada sterrata) sino al raggiungimento del lago. Il percorso è lungo circa 2 km.

A few kilometers south of Dobbiaco stands the lake of Dobbiaco, another must when visiting this area of South Tyrol. Visitors can leave their car close to the lake (it's a paid parking, often very crowded), or do like we did: park your car in the huge Nordic Arena parking lot (Via al lago 16, Dobbiaco) and follow "via al lago" ( which then becomes Lunga via delle Dolomiti, a dirt road) until reaching the lake. The route is about 2 km long and it's very pretty trafficked. 

Il lago di Dobbiaco è un altro capolavoro delle Dolomiti. Soprattutto in primavera ed in autunno, la sua  variegata vegetazione offre agli uccelli acquatici e migratori un habitat ideale per la sosta e la nidificazione. Lungo i 2.5 km del semplice (adatto anche ai passeggini) percorso lungolago "Sentiero Natura", potrete ammirare specie rare, presenti solo occasionalmente in Alto Adige: il luogo migliore è indubbiamente la piattaforma di osservazione allestita lungo la riva occidentale, che offre le migliori possibilità di birdwatching. Le 11 stazioni illustrano il mondo della fauna e della flora che caratterizzano il lago.

Lake Dobbiaco is another masterpiece of the Dolomites. Especially in spring and autumn, its variegated vegetation offers aquatic and migratory birds an ideal habitat for resting and nesting. Along the 2.5 km of the easy (also suitable for strollers) lakeside trail "Sentiero Natura", you can admire rare species, present only occasionally in South Tyrol: the best place is undoubtedly the observation platform set up along the west bank, which offers the best possibility of birdwatching. The 11 stations illustrate the world of fauna and flora that characterize the lake.

DOBBIACO LAKE TRAIL DATA

LENGTH: 2.5 km (6.5 km if you start from the Nordic Arena)

DURATION: 30 minutes

LE ACQUE CARAIBICHE DEL LAGO DI LANDRO

Alzi gli occhi... e c'è un nuovo lago da ammirare. Dopo pochissimi chilometri (direzione sud), infatti, eccoci arrivati ad un altro dei bacini d'acqua che caratterizzano la Strada Statale 51, il Lago di Landro. Situato nell'omonima valle, il lago sii presenta con colori completamente diversi rispetto a tutti gli altri bacini dolomitici: un azzurrino quasi caraibico. Il lago può essere ammirato tramite  una piacevole passeggiata, oppure potrete fermarvi nella spiaggetta per fare anche un bagno. Già, perchè le acque del Lago di Landro sono considerevolmente più calde rispetto agli altri laghi alpini. 

THE CARIBBEAN WATERS OF LAKE LANDRO

You raise your eyes ... and there is a new lake to admire. After a few kilometers (southbound), in fact, we come to another of the water basins that characterize the Strada Statale 51, Lake Landro. Located in the homonymous valley, the lake has completely different colors compared to all the other Dolomite alpine lakes: an almost Caribbean blue. The lake can be admired through a pleasant walk, or you can stop at the beach and take a bath. Yes, because the waters of Lake Landro are considerably warmer than other Alpine lakes.

ALTRO GIRO, ALTRO LAGO. IL LAGO DI MISURINA, OASI DEL BUON RESPIRO

Si sconfina in Veneto per l'ennesimo lago di giornata, il Lago di Misurina, situato nell'omonima cittadina a 1756 metri sul livello del mare. Il lago, oltre ad essere splendido, è famoso per le proprietà terapeutiche che offre grazie al suo microclima particolarmente salubre, tanto da valergli il nickname di "oasi del buon respiro". Il giro del lago di circa 4 km, è il modo migliore per esplorare le bellezze dell'area, ma è anche il punto di partenza verso il lago di lago di Antorno e poi verso il gruppo montuoso del Sorapiss, il monte Piana, i Cadini di Misurina e le famose Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Non dimenticatevi che, poco distante da Misurina, comincia uno dei sentieri più belli delle Dolomiti, quello che conduce allo stupendo lago di Sorapiss, ma anche e soprattutto la strada che conduce alle Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Noi abbiamo deciso di lasciare questi due "must" dolomitici per un'altra spedizione, ma un viaggio nel cuore dell'Alto Adige difficilmente può prescindere da queste due bellissime escursioni. 

ONE MORE TIME AROUND THE BLOCK -  LAKE MISURINA, OASIS OF GOOD BREATH

We are about to leave The region of Trentino Alto Adige for a moment and enter Veneto: we want to visit another lake, Lake Misurina, located in the town of Misurina at 1756 meters above sea level. The lake, besides being splendid, is famous for its therapeutic properties thanks to the particularly healthy microclimate, so much so that it is nicknamed "oasis of good breath". The hike around the lake is about 4 km and this is definitely the best way to explore the beauties of the area, but it is also the starting point towards Antorno lake and then towards the Sorapiss mountain group, Mount Piana, the Cadini of Misurina and the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Don't forget that, not far from Misurina, there's one of the most beautiful trails in the Dolomites, the one that leads to the beautiful Sorapiss lake, but also and above all tehre's the road that leads to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. We decided to leave these two Dolomite "musts" for another trip to Trentino Alto Adige, but a travel to the heart of South Tyrol cannot be separated from these two beautiful excursions.

Il lago di Misurina è inoltre, come il Lago di Carezza, ha ispirato anche diverse leggende. Su tutte quella legata a Misurina, l'unica figlia del Re Sorapiss e nota per il suo carattere, diciamo così, irascibile. Un giorno la bambina scoprì che sul Monte Cristallo viveva una fata che possedeva uno specchio magico, in grado di leggere nel pensiero. Lei lo volle a tutti i costi e la fata dettò le sue condizioni: avrebbe ceduto lo specchio solo a patto di poter trasformare Re Sorapiss in una montagna, che avrebbe così dunque protetto le sue amate piante con la sua ombra. Il Re accettò, ma dopo la trasformazione, Misurina si rese conto di trovarsi improvvisamente in cima alla montagna e, colta da vertigini, cadde nel vuoto e morì. E mentre il padre piangeva l'amata figlia, le sue lacrime copiose si trasformarono in un lago, il lago di Misurina...

Lake Misurina has, just like Lake Carezza, also inspired several legends. Above all the one linked to Misurina, the only daughter of King Sorapiss best known for her temper.  One day, the little girl found out that a fairy was living on Monte Cristallo and owned a magic mirror which was able to read minds. She wanted it at all costs and the fairy dictated her conditions: she would have given up the mirror only if she could transform King Sorapiss into a mountain, which would therefore have protected her beloved plants with her shadow. The King accepted it, but after the transformation, Misurina realized that she was suddenly on the top of the mountain and, seized by dizziness, fell into space and died. And while the father was crying his beloved daughter, her copious tears turned into a lake, Lake Misurina ...

IL MEGLIO PER LA FINE - LA GRANDE SORPRESA DEL LAGO DI ANTERSELVA

No, nel nostro programma di viaggio, il Lago di Anterselva non era previsto durante la giornata odierna. Ma, la verità è che non abbiamo saputo resistere. E allora via verso le vette del Parco Naturale Vedrette di Ries-Aurina, nel cuore della Valle di Anterselva (Antholz in tedesco), sino allo splendido lago che, per essere onesti, è quello che ci ha colpito di più tra tutti i laghi visitati durante l'on the road. E, dobbiamo ammetterlo, che tutto ciò ci ha sorpreso moltissimo, perchè il Lago di Anterselva non è così pubblicizzato (e famoso) come i "cugini" Braies e Tovel. Ma come sempre durante un on the road, le sorprese sono dietro l'angolo....

THE BEST FOR THE END - THE GREAT SURPRISE OF LAKE ANTERSELVA

No, in our travel planning, Lake Anterselva was scheduled for the next day. But the truth is that we have not been able to resist. So we head to the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Natural Park, in the heart of the Anterselva Valley (Antholz in German language), up to the splendid lake which, to be honest, is the one that struck us the most amogn all the lakes we visited during the on the road. We must admit that all this has surprised us a lot, because Lake Anterselva is not as publicized (and famous) as Braies and Tovel. But surprises are always around the corner when you travel...

Situato a 1642 metri sul livello del mare, il lago è situato una manciata di metri a nord del Biathlon Stadion (se siete fortunati, potrete vedere allenarsi i campioni del Biathlon...) e, nonostante sia il terzo lago più grande dell'Alto Adige, regala probabilmente il più bel percorso lungolago delle intere Dolomiti. 

Located at 1642 meters above sea level, the lake is located a few meters north of the Biathlon Stadion (if you are lucky, you can see the Biathlon champions while training ...) and, despite being the third largest lake in the Alto Adige, it probably offers the most beautiful lakeside trail of the entire Dolomites.

Lasciate la vostra vettura al Centro Biathlon e raggiungete il lago: da qui comincia il vero e proprio percorso che noi abbiamo seguito in senso orario (consigliatissimo). Il sentiero naturalistico è costellato da numerosi pannelli informativi che illustrano la flora e la fauna locale, che in circa 1 ora e 30 minuti vi riporterà al punto di partenza. 

Leave your car at the Biathlon Center and get to the lake: the trail begins here and we recommend to follow it in a clockwise direction. The nature trail is dotted with numerous information panels illustrating the local flora and fauna, and takes you back to the starting point in about 1h.30 minutes.

Il percorso didattico, inaugurato nel 2003, si snoda in avvio su una passerella in legno e poin lungo la riva del lago, e poi in salita verso il bosco. Il color verde smeraldo del lago vi lascerà senza parole. A metà percorso incrocerete un grande prato con l'annesso parco giochi, un ristorante ed una piccola spiaggetta. Dopo aver attraversato la strada che conduce al Passo Stallo, riprendete il sentiero che costeggia il versante est del lago. Questo è indubbiamente il tratto più bello, perchè la strada s'inerpica e dall'alto il lago sarà ancora più bello.

LUNGHEZZA PERCORSO: 3.5 km

DURATA: 1 ora. 

The educational nature trail, inaugurated in 2003, starts on a wooden walkway, continues along the shore of the lake, and then uphill towards the woods. The emerald green color of the lake will leave you speechless. Halfway through the rout, visitors will cross a large lawn with the adjoining playground, a restaurant and a small beach. After crossing the road that leads to Passo Stallo, take the trail that runs along the east side of the lake. This is undoubtedly the most beautiful stretch, because the road climbs and the lake will be even more beautiful from above.

DURATION: 1 hour.

FANA LADINA, IL MIGLIOR RISTORANTE DI CUCINA LADINA DELL'ALTO ADIGE

Dopo i quasi 20 km spesi intorno ai principali laghi alpini dolomitici, non potevamo non chiudere la giornata con un'autentica chicca culinaria. Si torna a San Vigilio di Marebbe, a due passi da Brunico, per quella che a tutti gli effetti è stata la miglior cena della spedizione. Dove siamo? Semplicemente nel ristorante che offre la miglior cucina ladina di tutte le Dolomiti, parola di Alessandro Borghese e del suo programma televisimo "4 ristoranti". Siamo da Alma nel suo ristorante Fana Ladina. I piatti proposti sono quelli della tradizione, ma con un pizzico di innovazione, tutto preparato rigorosamente in casa e a fare da padrone è il sorriso di Alma. Il menù offre una vasta scelta ed è difficile escludere qualcosa. Abbiamo cercato di ordinare piatti differenti, in modo da provare un po' di tutto: come antipasto abbiamo ordinato i Tultres, delle pizzelle ripiene di ricotta e spinaci, ma il Crafun more, un krapfen salato farcito con ragù è stata un'esperienza gustosissima. Come primi piatti abbiamo optato per delle tagliatelle fatte in casa alla farina di carruba con ragù di selvaggina e una crema di zucca con tortelli ripieni di formaggio grigio e ricotta. Ovviamente non potevano mancare i dolci: il crafun dolce, buono, ma quello salato con il ragù resta imbattibile e il pane degli angeli, una sorta di rivisitazione dello strudel con un gelato al pino mugo fatto in casa.

After the amost 20 km covered around the main alpine lakes of the Dolomites, we cannot fail to end the day with anl authentic culinary gem. We are in San Vigilio di Marebbe, a stone's throw from Brunico, for what will be the best dinner of the on the road. Where are we? Simply in the restaurant that offers the best Ladin cuisine in the Dolomites, according to Alessandro Borghese and his TV program "4 restaurants". We are at Alma's restaurant, whose name is Fana Ladina. Alma cooks traditional dishes, but with a pinch of innovation. The menu offers a wide choice and it is difficult to skip something: as an appetizer we ordered the Tultres, fried ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta cheese or sauerkraut, but the Crafun more, a savory donut stuffed with minced meat sauce was a very tasty experience. As first courses we opted for carob flour pasta with game sauce and a Creamy Pumpkinsoup with ravioli stuffed with gray cheese. Obviously, the desserts must not be missed: the sweet crafun and the bread of the angels, a sort of reinterpretation of the strudel with a homemade mountain pine ice cream.
