Nel post precedente vi abbiamo parlato di quanto sia affascinante l'area delle praterie dell'Alberta Centrale. E non soltanto per Drumheller, i suoi dinosauri e le sue fantastiche "badlands". Già, perchè spostandoci di cento km a nord, nel cuore delle praterie, c'è la possibilità di avventurarsi in un'escursione che, almeno per noi, è stata la ciliegina sulla torta dello stupendo viaggio tra British Columbia ed Alberta. Siamo nella piccola Stettler, ad un tiro da schioppo da Red Deer, la città (parecchio grandicella) che si trova sostanzialmente a metà strada tra Calgary ed Edmonton. Siamo qui per l'avventura delle avventure, ovvero l'escursione di mezza giornata sui treni a vapore della Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions, una delle nove "Heritage Railways" dello stato dell'Alberta. Senza alcun dubbio la giornata più divertente del viaggio in terra canadese...
In the previous post we told you about how fascinating the Central Alberta prairie area is. And not only because of Drumheller, its dinosaurs and its amazing badlands. That's right, because just moving a hundred kilometers north into the heart of the prairies, there is the opportunity to venture into a fascinating excursion that, at least for us, was the icing on the cake of the wonderful trip between British Columbia and Alberta. We are in the tiny town of Stettler, a stone's throw from Red Deer, the (rather large) city that is basically located halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. We are here for the most amazing adventure of the entire trip, namely the half-day excursion on the Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions steam trains, one of nine "Heritage Railways" in the state of Alberta. Without a doubt the funnest day of the journey on Canadian soil....
ALBERTA PRAIRIE RAILWAYS, TRA BANDITI, PRATERIE E WESTERN TOWN...
La stazione ferroviaria di Stettler è dove prende il via il viaggio della durata di 4-6 ore che grazie all'Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions, consente al viaggiatore di attraversare le praterie dell'Alberta Parkland e raggiungere la bellissima comunità di Big Valley (30 km a sud di Stettler). Proprio grazie alla ferrovia e a questo treno che ogni giorno la raggiunge, la piccola western town riesce ancora a oggi ad essere pienamente in vita anche se il suo fascino è quello delle ghost town del vecchio west. Spesso e volentieri la locomotiva a vapore che trainano il treno è la storica numero 41 del 1920, che vi farà immergere ancor di più nell'atmosfera del vecchio west canadese, dove a seconda del giorno di viaggio, vengono messi in scena diversi temi tra cui omicidi misteriosi, spettacoli di musica, teddy bear e l'immancabile assalto dei banditi ai vagoni del treno.
ALBERTA PRAIRIE RAILWAYS, AMONG BANDITS, PRAIRIES AND WESTERN TOWNS...
The Stettler train station is where the 4- to 6-hour journey begins and, thanks to the Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions, allows the traveler to cross the prairies of Alberta Parkland and reach the beautiful community of Big Valley (30 km south of Stettler). Thanks precisely to the railroad and this train that runs every day, this small western town still manages to this day to be fully alive even if its charm is that of the ghost towns of the Old West. The steam locomotive that pulls the train is often the historic number 41 (dates back to 1920), which let visitors immerse even more in the atmosphere of the old Canadian west, where depending on the day of travel, different themes are staged including murder mysteries, music shows, teddy bears and the unmissable bandit assault on the train cars.
Proveremo a parlarvi in questo post delle diverse tematiche di viaggio, ma avremo ovviamente un occhio di riguardo sul nostro (Country Dinner Excursion), che oltre ad attraversare alcune delle più importanti terre agricole dell'Alberta, ci ha consentito nel vagone "aperto" di ammirare diversi coyote, cervi e moltissimi uccelli. A bordo l'intrattenimento non è mancato, con musica dal vivo, e giochi in cui il meraviglioso Richard Popovich ha coinvolto tutti noi. Anzi, specialmente noi unici stranieri. Ah, non dimenticate che perchè questo viaggio nel viaggio vi porterà a stretto contatto con la gente del posto, con chi lavora sui treni e nella comunità di Big Valley (spesso si tratta di volontari delle comunità locali), persone che vi faranno davvero sentire come a casa.
We will try to tell you about the different trip themes in this post, but we will also focus on our trip (Country Dinner Excursion), which in addition to crossing some of Alberta's most important farmland, allowed us in the open wagon to see several coyotes, deer, and lots of birds. There was no shortage of entertainment on board, with live music, and games in which the wonderful Richard Popovich got us all involved. Especially us, as only foreigners, indeed. Well, don't forget that this journey within a journey will take you into close contact with the locals, those who work on the trains and in the Big Valley community (these are often volunteers from local communities), people who will really make you feel at home.

Già, perchè Richard e sua moglie Deborah, negli ultimi 20 anni, hanno prodotto 2 serie televisive basate sulla musica, registrato 5 album e eseguito oltre 5000 spettacoli in tutto il Canada occidentale. Non abbiamo mai riso così tanto come quel giorno...
And, if, like us, you think "that Popovich is really good," well... sifting through the Internet you will notice that the entertainment is of an absolute standard. That's right, because Richard and his wife Deborah, over the past 20 years, have produced 2 music-based television series, recorded 5 albums and performed over 5000 shows throughout Western Canada. We have never laughed as hard as we did that day....
E poi, a metà del viaggio, ecco i banditi assaltare il treno. Sono i famigerati Reynolds Raiders, un gruppo pesantemente armato che ha la brutta abitudine di derubare i treni e prendere in ostaggio alcuni passeggeri. Per nostra fortuna l'intervento (dopo una lunga sparatoria) dell'impavido eroe canadese Gabriel Dumont ha permesso al treno di continuare la sua corsa e di recuperare tutti i soldi che i fuorilegge avevano sottratto ai passeggeri. Portate con voi tante monetine, perchè tutto il bottino andrà devoluto in beneficenza a vari enti. Pensate che nei primi trent'anni di attività, l'Alberta Prairie Excursions ha devoluto oltre 100 mila dollari a varie cause!
And then, halfway through the journey, here are the bandits storming the train. They are the notorious Reynolds Raiders, a heavily armed group with a nasty habit of robbing trains and taking some passengers as hostages. Fortunately for us, the intervention (after a lengthy shootout) of the fearless Canadian hero Gabriel Dumont allowed the train to continue its run and recover all the money the outlaws had taken from the passengers. Take lots of change with you, because all the loot will be donated to various charities. Just think that in its first 30 years of operation, Alberta Prairie Excursions has donated over $100,000 to various causes!
L'APPRODO A BIG VALLEY E LA CENA PIU' BELLA DI SEMPRE
La destinazione finale del nostro viaggio, prima di rientrare a Stettler, è stata Big Valley, che nei primi anni del '900 fu punto di divisione per la Canadian Northern Railway. Una volta scesi dal treno farete un salto indietro di almeno cento anni, in una terra che un tempo era centro di ricchi allevamenti ed attività agricole proprio grazie alla "lana della prateria" (l'erba che cresce in queste zone) che poteva fornire un'alimentazione eccellente per il bestiame.
BIG VALLEY AND THE BEST DINNER EVER
The final destination of our trip, before returning to Stettler, was Big Valley, which in the early 1900s was a division point for the Canadian Northern Railway. Once off the train you will step back at least a hundred years, into a land that was once a center of rich ranching and farming activities precisely because of the "prairie wool" (the grass that grows in these areas) that could provide excellent feed for livestock.
Ma poi, con l'avvento della ferrovia (nel 1911), ebbe anche un boom economico che anche grazie all'enorme quantità di carbone ed al petrolio presente nel territorio, l'ha resa celebre per diversi anni. Ma poi, a conti fatti, è stato proprio il passaggio dell'Alberta Prairie Excursions a tenerla in vita ed ora, una volta imbattuti nelle sue strade, potrete visitarla in lungo e in largo seguendo i principali punti di interesse. But then, with the advent of the railroad (in 1911), it also experienced an economic boom, which also thanks to the huge amount of coal and oil in the area, made it famous for several years. 1) Il RAILWAY STATION/MUSEUM
Situato alla fine di Main Street, la stazione è il fulcro della collezione di edifici storici all'interno del Villaggio. Fu costruito nel 1912 dalla Canadian Northern Railway ed ospita ancora oggi un ufficio ferroviario, mentre al piano terra potrete ammirare una vasta galleria fotografica.
1) THE RAILWAY STATION/MUSEUM
Located at the end of Main Street, the station is the centerpiece of the collection of historic buildings within the Village. It was built in 1912 by the Canadian Northern Railway and still houses a railroad office, while on the ground floor you can view an extensive photo gallery.
2) BIG VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM
La Big Valley Historical Society è una società di beneficenza senza scopo di lucro dedicata alla conservazione e all'esposizione di edifici e manufatti del patrimonio del piccolo villaggio di Big Valley. Bellissime le vetture d'epoca che sono esposte all'interno di questo museo (gratuito, ma una piccola donazione è sempre ben accetta) situato proprio di fronte alla stazione.
2) BIG VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM
The Big Valley Historical Society is a nonprofit charitable society dedicated to the preservation and display of heritage buildings and artifacts of the small village of Big Valley. Beautiful vintage cars are on display inside this (it's free, but donations are accepted) museum located just in front of the station.
2) ST. EDMUND’S CHURCH
Alla fine del 1914, la diocesi anglicana di Calgary ricevette una lettera e la somma di $ 500,00 dalla signora Caroline Leffler, una signora inglese, che raccolse i soldi fabbricando e vendendo abiti per bambini. La lettera indicava il suo desiderio che i soldi fossero usati per fondare una Chiesa d'Inghilterra in qualunque parte del Canada occidentale che la diocesi avesse ritenuto opportuno. Un anno dopo, mentre Big Valley stava per vivere il suo momento di massimo splendore, la diocesi decise che questo sarebbe proprio il luogo adatto per erigerla in cima ad una collina che domina l'intera Main Street. Ogni anno, molte coppie scelgono la bellissima chiesa antica come cornice unica per il loro matrimonio.
2) ST. EDMUND'S CHURCH
In late 1914, the Anglican Diocese of Calgary received a letter and the sum of $500.00 from Mrs. Caroline Leffler, an English lady, who raised the money by making and selling children's clothing. The letter indicated her desire that the money be used to establish a Church of England in whatever part of Western Canada the diocese saw fit. A year later, as Big Valley was about to experience its heyday, the diocese decided that this would be just the right place to erect it atop a hill overlooking the entire Main Street. Every year, many couples choose the beautiful old church as the unique setting for their wedding.
3) OIL WELL PUMPER DISPLAY
Situata a Memorial Park, questa unità è un esempio dei macchinari utilizzati per la produzione di petrolio nella zona sin da quando ci furono le prime scoperte negli anni '50
5) JIMMY JOCK BOARDWALK
Una delle principali attrazioni turistiche di Big Valley è la passerella Jimmy Jock, una passerella a forma di "U" in stile vecchio west con negozi decisamente carini.

Located in Memorial Park, this unit is an example of the machinery used for oil production in the area since there were first discoveries in the 1950s
5) JIMMY JOCK BOARDWALK
The major tourist attraction in Big Valley is the Jimmy Jock boardwalk, a U-shaped, old-west style boardwalk with decidedly cute stores.
Terminato di gironzolare per le vie Big Valley, ci siamo diretti alla Community Hall, la sala comunale, dove tutti insieme agli altri passeggeri abbiamo cenato (la cena è inclusa nel prezzo). Uno stupendo momento di aggregazione, possibile grazie al lavoro di tante persone che hanno preparato e servito la cena (verdure, arrosto di tacchino, pane...e un ottimo gelato) in stile "country" più buona e divertente di sempre.
Once we finished wandering the Big Valley streets, we headed to the Community Hall, the community hall, where with the other passengers we had dinner (It is included in the adventure!). All together. A wonderful time of fellowship, made possible by the work of so many people who prepared and served the best and most enjoyable country style dinner ever (vegetables, roast turkey, bread...and great ice cream).

L'indirizzo da impostare sul vostro gps è il 123 Leva Avenue, quello del The Donut Mill, dove un enorme mulino a vento vi spalancherà le porte a quello che dal 1994 è il "regno delle donuts". Ce ne sono di tantissimi tipi (interessantissime sono sempre le "ciambelle del mese"), e sono ovviamente una più buona dell'altra...

Depending on the season you will find the following offerings: the Country Dinner Excursion (our tour), the Apst Limited Specials, the intriguing Murder Mysteries where passengers are invited to solve mysteries, and then the beautiful Teddy Bear Specials and The Polar Express, where children are the main stars. Especially the latter, during the Christmas season, really catapults people to the North Pole.... On the other hand, we only came to Red Deer (the main city of the area) rapidly, but just in time to taste the "best doughnuts in Canada." And no, we are not blowing this out of proportion. The address to set on your gps is 123 Leva Avenue, that of The Donut Mill, where a huge windmill will open wide the doors to what has been the "kingdom of donuts" since 1994. There are so many kinds of donuts (always interesting are the "donuts of the month"), and they are obviously one better than the next....
