Presa confidenza con la bellissima Vancouver e smaltito, almeno un pochino, il fuso orario, è giunto il momento di dare spazio, nel secondo ed ultimo giorno in città, alla sua croce e delizia, ovvero il luogo più conosciuto, fotografato, amato e odiato, premiato ed inflazionato di tutta la città. Il parco di Capilano Suspension Bridge. E qui, davvero dovremo aprire un capitolo a parte, perchè difficilmente troverete pareri unanimi sulla principale attrazione di Vancouver che a noi (come sempre la maschera la gettiamo subito e non vi teniamo sulle spine) non è piaciuta più di tanto, soprattutto in relazione a quello che abbiamo visto nelle giornate successive. Quello che invece ci è piaciuto moltissimo è il downtown cittadino, semplice da visitare (e sempre a piedi) e ricco di luoghi particolari. Certo, non può essere paragonato ai centri storici europei, ma quello di Vancouver ha il suo perchè. Decisamente...
In the first day we've got familiar with the amazing Vancouver and, despite the jetlag, we're now ready to give space on our second and final day in the city to its cross and delight, namely the best-known, most photographed, loved and hated, award-winning and overused place in the entire city. The Capilano Suspension Bridge park. And here, we really have to open a separate chapter, because you will hardly find unanimous opinions about Vancouver's main attraction: we do not care too much on your toes and must confess that did not like all that much, especially in relation to what we saw in the following days. What we did like very much, however, was the city's downtown, easy to visit (and always on foot) and full of special places. Of course, it can't be compare to European downtowns, but Vancouver's has its own thing. Definitely.
VISITARE CAPILANO SUSPENSION BRIDGE, I PRO ED I CONTRO...
Capilano Suspension Bridge è, come abbiamo detto, l'attrazione più conosciuta di Vancouver. Anzi, ad essere onesti dovremmo dire di North Vancouver, ovvero circa ad una decina di km a nord della città. Eppure non è tutto rose e fiori quando si parla di questo parco, in primis per il prezzo (elevatissimo) che condiziona notevolmente il giudizio (54 dollari a persona). E' vero che in Nordamerica tutto quello che è entertainment si paga e profumatamente, ma qui stiamo parlando di natura, il che stona e non poco.
VISITING CAPILANO SUSPENSION BRIDGE, PROS AND CONS ...
Capilano Suspension Bridge is, as we said, the best-known attraction in Vancouver. Actually, to be fair, we should say North Vancouver, which is about ten kilometers north of the city. Yet it is not all sunshine and roses when it comes to this park, primarily because of the (very high) admission price, which greatly affects the judgment ($54 per person). It is true that in North America all the entertainment is really expensive, but here we are talking about nature, and it's hard to accept that.
E poi, se non lo si visita all'apertura o vicini alla chiusura, il rischio di trovarsi in un totale caos di persone che rendono la visita decisamente poco gradevole è elevatissimo. Abbiamo aperto immediatamente con i principali difetti di un parco che altrimenti sarebbe davvero decisamente carino, perchè pochissime altre aree verdi in una grande città nordamericana possono offrire così tante attrazioni nella natura. Tutte insieme.
And then, if you don't visit it early in the morning or late in the afternoon, the risk of being in a total mess of people making the visit decidedly unpleasant, is very high. We decided to start the post about Capilano Suspension Bridge with the main flaws of a park that otherwise would be really quite nice, because very few other green areas in a large North American city can offer so many attractions in nature. All at once.
Già, perchè il Capilano Suspension Bridge (1.2 milioni di visitatori all'anno) riesce ad offrire in un colpo solo un bellissimo ponte sospeso, lungo 140 metri ed alto 70 metri che in quel tratto consente di attraversare il fiume Capilano, ma anche una foresta pluviale, giardini, percorsi naturalistici, la più grande collezione privata di Totem delle Nazioni Unite, spettacoli, balli e narrazioni riguardanti le "Prime Nazioni", ovvero le popolazioni indigene canadesi, ed un camminata sospesa, la "Cliff Walk".
That's right, because the Capilano Suspension Bridge (1.2 million visitors every year) manages to offer in one fell swoop a beautiful 140-meter-long and 70-meter-high suspension bridge that allows visitors to cross the Capilano River, but also a rainforest, gardens, nature trails, the largest private collection of Totems, performances, dances and storytelling concerning the "First Nations," or Canadian indigenous peoples, and a suspended walk, the "Cliff Walk."
Proprio quest'ultima, aperta nel 2011, consente grazie ad una serie di passerelle sospese vicine alla scogliera, di visitare le aree più impervie del parco. E come dimenticare il Treetops Adventure, una serie di sette ponti sospesi collegati ad otto abeti che consente una vera e propria... camminata tra gli alberi. Oltre alle avventure dedicate ai più piccoli, che rendono il parco ideale per le famiglie.
Just the latter, opened in 2011, allows thanks to a series of suspended walkways close to the cliff to visit the most inaccessible areas of the park. And how can we forget the Treetops Adventure, a series of seven suspension bridges connected to eight fir trees that allows a real ... walk among the trees. As well as adventures dedicated to younger children, making the park ideal for families.
In conclusione, se doveste visitare il parco ad un orario non di punta (e non rinunciare per via del costo spropositato), l'avventura al Capilano Suspension Bridge potrebbe rivelarsi decisamente positiva. E non dimenticatevi che, incluso nel biglietto, il parco mette a disposizione una navetta (gratuita) che collega il Capilano Suspension Bridge con le aree principali di Vancouver. Gli orari dello shuttle potrete trovarli direttamente sul sito del parco, mentre le tre fermate in downtown sono Canada Place, Hyatt Regency e Blue Horizon.
In conclusion, if you were to visit the park at a non-peak time (and not give up because of the disproportionate admission ticket), the adventure at the Capilano Suspension Bridge could be a decidedly positive one. And don't forget that, included with your admission ticket, the park provides a shuttle (free of charge) that connects the Capilano Suspension Bridge with major areas of Vancouver. Shuttle schedules can be found directly on the park's website, and the three stops downtown are Canada Place, Hyatt Regency, and Blue Horizon.
COSA VEDERE A DOWNTOWN VANCOUVER?
Ben racchiuso nella penisola e "protetto" dal Burrard Inlet, dalla English Bay e dallo splendido Stanley Park, downtown Vancouver non solo è terribilmente affascinante, ma è uno dei pochi nel Nord-America ad offrire un po' di tutto. Dai negozi di Robson Street ai grattacieli, dall'anima gay friendly al west end, dalla chinatown alla zona portuale. Qui ce n'è davvero per tutti i gusti e consigliamo di cominciare l'avventura a downtown Vancouver dal Canada Place, l'enorme centro congressi e terminale per le navi da crociera, dove potrete fare una passeggiata e fermarvi in uno dei tanti ristoranti. Poco lontano non potrete non notare l’Olympic Couldron, un calderone a forma di tripoide eretto in occasione delle Olimpiadi del 2010.
WHAT TO SEE IN DOWNTOWN VANCOUVER?
Well enclosed on the peninsula and "protected" by Burrard Inlet, English Bay and the beautiful Stanley Park, downtown Vancouver is not only charming, but it is also one of the few in North America to offer a little bit of everything. From the stores of Robson Street to the skyscrapers, from the gay friendly soul to the west end, from Chinatown to the harbor area. There really is something for everyone here, and we recommend starting your adventure in downtown Vancouver from Canada Place, the huge convention center and cruise ship terminal, where you can take a stroll and stop at one of the many restaurants. Not far away you can't fail to notice the Olympic Couldron, a tripoid-shaped cauldron erected for the 2010 Olympics.
A 300 metri da Canada Place, merita una visita il Marine Building, un grattacielo del 1939 che al tempo dell'apertura era di fatto l'edificio più grande dell'impero britannico ed ogi è uno degli edifici più famosi dell'intera Vancouver e tra i migliori in Art Deco al mondo. Proseguendo lungo West Hastings Street raggiungerete la Vancouver Lookout (orari 2022: 11 am-6 pm, prezzo 18.25 dollari) dalla quale ammirare la miglior vista possibile sull'intera Vancouver.
Just 300 meters from Canada Place, the Marine Building, a 1939 skyscraper that at the time of its opening was in fact the tallest building in the British Empire and today is one of the most famous buildings in all of Vancouver and among the best in Art Deco in the world. Continuing along West Hastings Street you will reach the Vancouver Lookout (2022 hours: 11 am-6 pm, admission $18.25) from which to admire the best possible view of the whole of Vancouver.
La torre di 28 piani (e alta 168 metri) vede svettare in cima il suo "lookout", inaugurato il 13 agosto 1977 da Neil Armstrong. La torre è dotata di ascensori panoramici, con le pareti trasparenti, che impiegano 40 secondi per portare i visitatori da terra fino alla piattaforma di osservazione a 168m. Una volta in cima potrete compiere un giro circolare della torre ed ammirare la città da diverse angolazioni. Ad aiutarvi ci saranno dei pannelli esplicativi che raccontano la storia dei quartieri e degli edifici più significativi.
The 28-story (168-meter-high) tower sees its lookout standing at the top: it was inaugurated on August 13, 1977 by Neil Armstrong. The tower has panoramic elevators, with transparent walls. It takes 40 seconds to take visitors from the ground to the 168m observation platform. Once at the top you can take a circular tour of the tower and admire the city from different angles. To help you, there will be explanatory panels telling the history of the most significant neighborhoods and buildings.
Scesi dalla torre, solamente 500 metri vi separano dal quartiere probabilmente più affascinante di tutta Vancouver, ovvero Gastown. Dichiarato sito di interesse storico, il quartiere dalle vie ciottolate di Gastown costituì il primo nucleo della città di Vancouver ed alcuni dei suoi antichi edifici ora ospitano ristoranti, negozi di souvenir e molto altro. Qui l'atmosfera è decisamente vacanziera, soprattutto durante l'estate.
Once you get off the tower, there are only 500 meters that separate you from probably the most charming neighborhood in all of Vancouver, namely Gastown. Declared a site of historical interest, the cobblestone-streets neighborhood of Gastown formed the first nucleus of the city of Vancouver and some of its old buildings now house restaurants, souvenir stores and more. The atmosphere here is decidedly holiday-like, especially during the summer.
Le due principali attrazioni di Gastown sono Gassy Jack Deighton Statue, la statua del primo imprenditore di Vancouver, posizionato in piedi su una botte contenente whiskey e soprattutto il Gastown Vancouver Steam Clock, l'orologio a vapore divenuto uno dei simboli dell'intera città. Situato all'angolo tra Crambie e Water Street, lo Steam Clock doveva in teoria scoraggiare le persone a dormire in cima alla griglia del sistema di riscaldamento a vapore in funzione nei mesi più freddi, in realtà ora è divenuto un'attrazione imperdibile, complice il suo "sbuffo" che avviene ogni ora ed il fischiettio ogni quarto di ora.
Gastown's two main attractions are Gassy Jack Deighton Statue, the statue of Vancouver's first entrepreneur, positioned standing on a barrel containing whiskey, and above all the Gastown Vancouver Steam Clock, the steam clock that has become one of the symbols of the entire city. Located at the corner of Crambie and Water Street, the Steam Clock was in theory supposed to discourage people from sleeping atop the grate of the steam heating system in operation during the colder months; but it has then become a must-see attraction, aided by its "puffing" that occurs every hour and its whistling every quarter hour.
Su Chinatown, la più grande di tutto il Canada ed una delle più grandi del Nordamerica, potremmo dire tutto ed il contrario di tutto. Innanzitutto essa confina con Gastown e non dovrete quindi percorrere molti metri prima di raggiungerla. Il Golden Village, come è anche conosciuta Chinatown, negli ultimi anni ha vissuto una forte decadenza, tanto da renderla un po' meno attrattiva per i turisti. Intendiamoci, noi non ci siamo mai sentiti non al sicuro e l'abbiamo girata in lungo ed in largo (la prima sera abbiamo anche cenato a chinatown), ma tra homeless e persone poco raccomandabili... beh, diciamo che Vancouver offre di meglio.
What can we say about Chinatown, the largest in all of Canada and one of the largest in North America? we could say everything and its opposite.. First of all, it borders Gastown, so it's not difficult to get there coming from the heart of Vancouver downtown. The Golden Village, as Chinatown is also known, has experienced a great deal of decay in recent years, so much so that it has become somewhat less attractive to tourists. Mind you, we never felt unsafe and we toured it far and wide (we even had dinner in Chinatown the first day), but we noticed many homeless and unfriendly people... well, let's just say Vancouver offers better....
Come ad esempio Yaletown, il nostro quartiere preferito, quello del divertimento e della sera. Dovrete svoltare a destra dopo aver superato il Vancouver Chinatown Millennium Gate e camminare per circa 1.5 km per raggiungere il riqualificato quartiere di Yaletown. Già, perchè questo ex quartiere di magazzini in mattoni, ha subito una clamorosa trasformazione che l'ha reso in meno di 30 anni una stupenda zona pedonale ricca di bar e ristoranti alla moda.
Such as Yaletown, our favorite entertainment and nightlife neighborhood. You'll have to turn right after passing the Vancouver Chinatown Millennium Gate and walk about 1.5 km to reach the redeveloped Yaletown neighborhood. That's right, because this former brick warehouse district underwent a resounding transformation that turned it into a wonderful pedestrian area full of trendy bars and restaurants in less than 30 years.
Ed è qui che probabilmente finirete per cenare, come abbiamo fatto noi, che abbiamo per la prima volta sperimentato la cucina libanese (fantastica) al Nuba, situato al 508 di Davie St.
And it is here that you will probably end up dining, as we did too. What better place than Nuba (508 Davie St) to experience for the first time the amazing Lebanese cuisine...
Leaving Yaletown, visitors can once again return to the heart of downtown Vancouver and walk the entirety of Davie Street, which we really liked, or the much more famous Robson Street, the "shopping street" named after John Robson, British Columbia's first minister in the late 1800s. Once characterized by small neighborhood stores, Robson Street has gradually become an upscale street with big-name stores and restaurants, especially in the area between Burrard Street and Bute Street. The average price of rents per square meter consistently ranks it among the most expensive in the world.
COSA VEDERE A VANCOUVER? QUALCHE CHICCA...
Per chi dovesse avere più tempo (che noi non abbiamo avuto avendo dato ampio spazio alla natura), una visita a Vancouver non può definirsi completa senza una sosta a Granville Island, la ex penisola industriale oggi casa di bar, teatri, negozi e soprattutto del famosissimo Granville Public Market, il mercato al coperto di Vancouver. Al suo fianco spicca anche la Granville Brewery (sono possibili le visite guidate), uno dei più antichi microbirrifici dell'intero Canada.
Gli appassionati di storia potranno invece visitare il Roedde Museum, dove potrete imparare qualcosa in più della vecchia Vancouver, quella dei pionieri. Il museo, ricavato nella bellissima casa che un tempo fu di Gustay Roedde e della sua famiglia, offre un bellissimo spaccato di quella che era la vita degli abitanti di Vancouver a fine '800. E non dimenticatevi che la domenica il biglietto costa un dollaro in più ma consente di gustarsi anche thè e biscotti come facevano i pionieri britannici...
L'ultima area, ma non per importanza, è quella che fa capo a Commercial Drive, dove gli immigrati italiani, greci, portoghesi e non solo, hanno creato un quartiere decisamente... europeo. Qui si guardano le partite di calcio, qui si passeggia e si vive un po' come se fossimo nel vecchio continente. il cafè sicuramente più famoso è il "Cafè Calabria" (1731 Commercial Dr).
