Quando si organizza un viaggio nella splendida Lisbona, spesso si associa alla capitale del Portogallo alcune delle più affascinati escursioni nelle zone più scenografiche del sud del paese. C'è chi va a Setubal, chi a Obidos, ma la maggior parte dei turisti non riesce a non subire il fascino del trittico di luoghi così diversi l'uno dall'altro ma così pittoreschi. Sto parlando ovviamente di Sintra, Cabo da Roca e Cascais, tre icone del sud del Portogallo che, correndo un pochettino, potreste anche visitare in una sola giornata partendo ovviamente dalla capitale Lisbona. Ma, prima di entrare del dettaglio e raccontarvi nel dettaglio le bellezze di Sintra, Cabo da Roca e Cascais, è indispensabile partire dall'organizzazione perchè di cose da vedere ce ne sono tante ed il tempo sempre troppo poco. E, se avete optato per il "fai da te", è importante che programmiate al meglio la vostra escursione.
When planning a trip to the beautiful Lisbon, people often associate Portugal's capital city with some of the most fascinating excursions to the most scenic parts of the country's south. Some go to Setubal, some to Obidos, but most tourists are just fascinated by the triptych of places so different from each other but so picturesque. I'm talking, of course, about Sintra, Cabo da Roca and Cascais, three icons of southern Portugal that, running a little bit, you could even visit in a single day starting, of course, from the capital Lisbon. But, before going into detail and telling you about the beauties of Sintra, Cabo da Roca and Cascais, it is essential to start with organization because there are so many things to see and do and time is always too short. And, if you have opted for “do it yourself journey” it is important that you plan your excursion as best you can.
TOUR DA LISBONA
COME ORGANIZZARE L'ESCURSIONE A SINTRA, CABO DA ROCA E CASCAIS
Sono tre i modi per raggiungere Sintra, Cabo e Cascais. Il primo è quello di partecipare a tour organizzati, il secondo è di noleggiare l'auto a Lisbona (ma attenzione, parcheggiare a Sintra è complicatisismo!) ed il terzo, sicuramente il più semplice ed efficace, è quello di usufruire dei mezzi pubblici che ben collegano la capitale con i tre luoghi di cui sopra. L'appuntamento allora ce lo diamo nella centralissima stazione di ROSSIO, da dove di buon mattino cominceremo la nostra avventura. Perchè di buon mattino? Semplice. Sintra è una meta gettonatissima e se non comincerete presto la visita (i palazzi aprono alle 9.30) vi ritroverete nel caos più totale tra code per acquistare il biglietto, code per entrare e, nel complesso, tanta, troppa gente che vi farà spazientire soprattutto in alta stagione. Da Rossio parte il treno che in 45 minuti raggiunge Sintra (ce n'è uno ogni mezz'ora) ed il mio consiglio è quello di salire a bordo del convoglio delle 8.00 circa, per essere a Sintra intorno alle 9. Visitare tutti i palazzi è sostanzialmente impossibile se avrete deciso di includere nel vostro programma di viaggio anche Cabo da Roca e Cascais, ma difficilmente rinuncerete al più bello, PALACIO DE PENA. Ed il consiglio è quello di visitarlo subito, alle 9.30, prima che venga preso d'assalto. Anche se i mezzi pubblici consentono di accedervi ed è possibile anche percorrere un sentiero di circa un'ora tra bellissimi giardini ed una natura incontaminata, vi consiglio di recarvi in cima prima di tutti utilizzando un Uber. Palacio de Pena ed il CASTELO DOS MOUROS sono parecchio distanti dalle altre attrazioni, quindi visitate queste due attrazioni e poi tornare verso il centro a piedi (in discesa, dettaglio da non trascurare) seguendo il bellissimo sentiero.
HOW TO ORGANIZE THE EXCURSION TO SINTRA, CABO DA ROCA AND CASCAIS
There are three ways to get to Sintra, Cabo and Cascais. The first is to join organized tours, the second is to rent a car in Lisbon (but beware, parking in Sintra is tricky!) and the third, certainly the simplest and most effective, is to take advantage of the public transportation that well connects the capital with the three places mentioned above. We then make the appointment in the early morning at the very central ROSSIO station, from where we will begin our adventure. Why early in the morning? Simple. Sintra is a very popular destination and if you don't start your visit early (the palaces open at 9:30 a.m.) you will find yourself wasting a lot of time while purchasing the ticket (be aware of long lines!), lines to get in and, overall, too many people that will make you impatient especially in high season. From Rossio departs the train that reaches Sintra in only 45 minutes (there is one every half hour), and my advice is to board the 8 a.m. train and be in Sintra around 9 a.m. Visiting all the palaces is basically impossible if you have decided to include Cabo da Roca and Cascais in your travel plans, but you will hardly give up the most beautiful one, PALACIO DE PENA. And the advice is to visit it at the beginning of the day, at 9:30 a.m., before it is stormed. Although public transportation allows you to access it and it is also possible to walk a path among beautiful gardens and unspoiled nature (1 hour long, all uphill!), I recommend going to the top first using an Uber. Palacio de Pena and CASTELO DOS MOUROS are quite a distance from the other attractions, then visit these two attractions and then walk back toward the city center (at this time, all downhill!) following the beautiful path.
Una volta tornati a Sintra, i mezzi pubblici vi consentiranno di accedere agli altri palazzi come ad esempio lo stupendo PALACIO DE MONSERRATE. La linea è la rossa (1253) ed ogni corsa (aggiornato al 2025) costa 2.60 euro, ma è possibile anche acquistare un pass giornaliero. La linea rossa (1253) è anche quella che in 25 minuti vi porta da Monserrate al secondo luogo della nostra escursione, ovvero CABO DA ROCA.
Once back in Sintra, public transportation gives visitors access to the other palaces such as the stunning PALACIO DE MONSERRATE. The line is the red (1253) and each ride (updated to 2025) costs 2.60 euros, but you can also purchase a day pass. The red line (1253) is also the one that takes you in 25 minutes from Monserrate to the second place of our excursion, which is CABO DA ROCA.
E' un piccolo pulmino (simile agli scuolabus) che, tra un tornante e l'altro, conduce al punto più ad ovest dell'Europa. Dal parcheggio di Cabo da Roca, sempre la linea rossa dei bus (ma questa volta il numero è 1624) vi condurrà in poco più di mezz'ora a Cascais, la più bella città di mare del sud del Portogallo. E per tornare a Lisbona? Nulla di più semplice. Dirigetevi nella stazione della città (Estação de Comboios De CASCAIS) e con poco più di 2 euro (come per il viaggio Lisbona-Sintra) ed un viaggio di 50 minuti sarete di nuovo nella capitale portoghese (linea gialla, Cascais).
It is a small bus (similar to school buses) that, between hairpin bends, takes you to the westernmost point in Europe. From the Cabo da Roca parking lot, again the red bus line (but this time the number is 1624) will take you in just over half an hour to Cascais, the most beautiful seaside town in southern Portugal. And how return to Lisbon? Nothing simpler. Head to the city's station (Estação de Comboios De CASCAIS) and for just over 2 euros (as for the Lisbon-Sintra trip) and a 50-minute ride you will be back in the Portuguese capital (yellow line, Cascais).

NATURA, ARTE E STORIA NEL "PAESE INCANTATO"
Spesso utilizziamo, a volte esagerando, l'espressione "fiabesca" quando parliamo di località un po' particolari, dove appunto sembra di essere in una... fiaba! Ecco, quando si parla di Sintra definirla fiabesca è quasi riduttivo, perchè questa città è un clamoroso museo a cielo aperto ricco di natura incontaminata, palazzi di una bellezza stordente e moltissime attrazioni tutelate dall'Unesco, tanto da richiamare migliaia e migliaia di turisti ogni anno (forse troppi...) ma anche poeti e artisti provenienti da ogni angolo del mondo. Sintra è semplicememnte stupenda e varrebbe la pena passarci anche 3-4 giorni, tra passeggiate scenografiche e visite ai palazzi che sono tra i più fotografati di tutto il Portogallo.

NATURE, ART AND HISTORY IN THE “ENCHANTED TOWN”
We often use, sometimes exaggeratingly, the expression “fairy-tale” when we talk about somewhat special locations, where precisely it seems to be in a... fairy tale! Well, while talking about Sintra, fairy-tale place is almost reductive, because this town is a resounding open-air museum full of unspoiled nature, stunningly beautiful palaces and many UNESCO-protected attractions, so much so that it attracts thousands and thousands of tourists every year (perhaps too many...) but also poets and artists from every corner of the world. Sintra is simply stunning and would be worth spending even 3-4 days there, between scenic walks and visits to the palaces that are among the most photographed in all of Portugal.
La storia di Sintra parte davvero da lontano (primo Paleolitico) e passeggiando per le sue vie la respirerete a pieni polmoni. Già dal XIX secolo, infatti, la città divenne un importante centro culturale con importanti influenze moresche, rinascimentali e gotiche che sono ben evidenti anche dando solo uno sguardo agli edifici più importanti. Ma come visitare Sintra? Qui si viene per la natura ma, soprattutto, per ammirarne gli splendidi palazzi...
Sintra's history really starts way back (early Paleolithic) and while walking through its streets you just breathe it. As early as the 19th century, in fact, the city became an important cultural center with important Moorish, Renaissance and Gothic influences that are clearly evident even if you just take a look at the most important buildings. But how to visit Sintra? People come here for the nature but, above all, to admire its splendid buildings...
Il consiglio è quello di muoversi per tempo ed acquistare online i biglietti che più vi interessano, senza dimenticare che esiste la possibilità di ottenere il biglietto cumulativo che consente al visitatore di risparmiare notevolmente rispetto all'acquisto dei singoli ticket. I palazzi più famosi sono il Palacio Nacional de Sintra, il Castelo dos Mouros, il Palacio Nacional da Pena, il Palacio de Monserrate, il Convento dos Capuchos, Quinta da Regaleira e Palacio Biester.
The advice is to move in advance and purchase the tickets that interest you most online, not forgetting that there is the possibility of obtaining a cumulative ticket that allows the visitors to save considerably compared to buying individual tickets. The most famous palaces are the Palacio Nacional de Sintra, Castelo dos Mouros, Palacio Nacional da Pena, Palacio de Monserrate, Convento dos Capuchos, Quinta da Regaleira and Palacio Biester.
Se la vostra intenzione è quella di visitare molti dei palazzi sopra citati, allora il consiglio principale è quello di dedicare un'intera giornata a Sintra (e forse non ve ne basterà una soltanto...), tralasciando Cabo da Roca e Cascais. Se invece volete visitare il più possibile, vi consiglio di scegliere non più di tre tra i palazzi che più vi incuriosiscono e di lasciare Sintra intorno alle ore 14.30.
If your intention is to visit many of the palaces mentioned above, then the main advice is to spend an entire day in Sintra (maybe you'll need one more day...), leaving out Cabo da Roca and Cascais. On the other hand, if you want to visit as much as possible, I recommend that you choose no more than three of the palaces you are most curious about and leave Sintra around 2:30 pm.
Io ho optato per il più famoso, ovvero Palacio Nacional De Pena (con il vicino Castelo dos Mouros), il Palacio Nacional nel cuore del centro storico di Sintra ed il Park and Palace of Monserrate, dei tre sicuramente quello che più mi ha colpito. Tutti e tre fanno parte del Parques de Sintra, l'organizzazione che gestisce sia i palazzi che la natura che li circonda facendo un lavoro davvero importante e meritevole.
I opted for the most famous, which is Palacio Nacional De Pena (with the nearby Castelo dos Mouros), the Palacio Nacional in the heart of Sintra's historic center and the Park and Palace of Monserrate, the one that impressed me the most between the three. All those palaces are part of the Parques de Sintra, the organization that manages both the palaces and the nature around them doing really important and worthy work.

Una volta giunti a Sintra, possibilmente intorno alle 9 del mattino, prenotate una corsa con Uber (io l'ho pagata 6 euro nel 2025) e dirigetevi subito verso la grande attrazione di Sintra, il Palacio Nacional de Pena. Molti dei palazzi di Sintra sono dislocati a qualche chilometro di distanza dal centro storico ed il Palacio Nacional de Pena non fa differenza: per questo vi consiglio di visitarlo insieme al Castelo dos Mouros e di tornare poi verso il centro a piedi.
WHAT TO SEE IN SINTRA
PALACIO DE PENA AND CASTELO DOS MOUROS
Once you arrive in Sintra, possibly around 9 a.m., book a ride with Uber (I paid 6 euros in 2025) and head straight for Sintra's big attraction, the Palacio Nacional de Pena. Many of Sintra's palaces are located a few kilometers away from the historic center and the Palacio Nacional de Pena is an example, so I recommend visiting it along with the Castelo dos Mouros and then walking back toward the center.
Palacio de Pena è uno dei più fotografati di tutto il Portogallo anche e soprattutto per i suoi colori, ma anche per la sua posizione appollaiata sopra le colline della città e per il fatto di trovarsi all'interno di uno scenografico bosco, il Parco de Pena. Mettete in conto di perdere parecchio tempo in biglietteria (se non avete già acquistato i ticket online) ed anche per visitare i suoi interni, in quanto gli ingressi sono scaglionati in fasce orarie.
Palacio de Pena is one of the most photographed in all of Portugal partly because of its colors, but also because of its location perched above the city's hills and the fact that it is located within a scenic forest, Parque de Pena. Plan to waste a lot of time at the ticket office (if you have not already purchased tickets online) and also to visit its interior, as entrances are staggered in time slots.
Molto più semplice è la visita del Castelo Dos Mouros, situato sostanzialmente accanto al Palacio De Pena. O meglio, l'entrata al castello è vicinissima al Palazzo, perche poi, per raggiungere le mura vere e proprie dovrete camminare per una decina di minuti. Non molto diverso dal castello di Lisbona, il Castelo Dos Mouros (situato a 500 metri sul livello del mare) regala una vista davvero stupenda sull'intera vallata, tanto da ispirare anche re Ferdinando II che era solito dipingere da questa privilegiatissima posizione il panorama circostante.
The visit to Castelo Dos Mouros is much easier. It is located basically next to the Palacio De Pena. Or rather, the entrance to the castle is very close to the Palace because then, to reach the actual walls, you will have to walk for about ten minutes. Not very different from the castle in Lisbon, Castelo Dos Mouros (located 500 meters above sea level) gives a truly stunning view of the entire valley, so much so that it even inspired King Ferdinand II, who used to paint the surrounding landscape from this very privileged position.
Una volta lasciato il Castelo dos Mouros potrete scendere a piedi verso il centro storico di Sintra. Se avete poco tempo, non fate l'errore che ho visto fare a molti (almeno venti persone mi hanno fermato chiedendomi "se mancasse tanto alla cima...") di percorrere questo tratto nei boschi anche all'andata. E' lungo (almeno un'ora di camminata) e sempre in salita. Il percorso però è scenografico ed è sicuramente una delle cose da fare a Sintra. Ma fatelo al ritorno.
Once you leave the Castelo dos Mouros, you can walk down to the historic center of Sintra. If you are short on time, don't make the mistake I have seen many people make (at least twenty people stopped me asking “if it was that far to the top...”) of walking this stretch in the woods uphill. It is pretty long (at least an hour's walk) and always uphill. The route, however, is scenic and is definitely one of the things to do in Sintra. But do it on the way back.
Se dopo aver visitato il Castelo Dos Mouros vorrete accelerare i tempi, scendete immediatamente a valle ma il percorso sarà meno scenografico; altrimenti tornare alla biglietteria del Castelo dos Mouros, girate a destra (Estrada da Pena) e dopo circa 200 metri ancora a destra in quello che sembra essere un parcheggio. Il sentiero più interessante per tornare a Sintra è questo: incrocerete la bellissima Villa Sassetti e, subito dopo, un bellissimo giardino ricco di fiori colorati.
After visiting Castelo Dos Mouros, if you would like to speed up your time, walk immediately down to the valley but the path will be less scenic; otherwise return to the Castelo dos Mouros ticket office, turn right (Estrada da Pena) and after about 200 meters turn right again into what appears to be a parking lot. The most interesting path back to Sintra is this one: you will cross the beautiful Villa Sassetti and, immediately after, a beautiful garden full of colorful flowers.
IL PALACIO NACIONAL ED IL CENTRO STORICO DI SINTRA
Il centro storico di Sintra è una cartolina vera e propria. Troverete ristoranti, negozietti e pasticcerie che producono i due famosi dolci locali, i travesseiros de Sintra e la queijada. I primi sono delle sfogliatine ripiene di una dolce crema di mandorle e uova, i secondi sono invece un tortino croccante ripieno di un preparato a base di formaggio fresco, cannella, uova, zucchero e farina.
THE PALACIO NACIONAL AND THE HISTORIC CENTER OF SINTRA
Sintra's historic center is a real postcard. You will find restaurants, small stores and bakeries that produce the two famous local sweets, travesseiros de Sintra and queijada. The travesseiros are puff pastries filled with a sweet cream of almonds and eggs, while the queijada are a crispy pie filled with a mixture of cream cheese, cinnamon, eggs, sugar, and flour.
Con la pancia piena dirigetevi al Palacio Nacional de Sintra, uno dei grandi esempi di palazzo medievale del Portogallo, ma anche simbolo vero e proprio di tutta Sintra. E' un palazzo elegantissimo in cui non potrete non notare i diversi stili frutto dei regnanti che si sono succeduti. Particolarmente affascinanti sono la Sala dos Brasões, dos Cisnes, das Pegas e la Cappella reale.
With a full belly, just head to the Palacio Nacional de Sintra, one of Portugal's great examples of medieval palaces, but also a true symbol of all of Sintra. It is a most elegant palace in which you will notice the different styles resulting from the successive rulers. Particularly fascinating are the Sala dos Brasões, dos Cisnes, das Pegas and the Royal Chapel.
COSA VEDERE A CASCAIS - IL TOUR A PIEDI DELLA CITTA'
Il tratto che da Cabo da Roca conduce a Cascais è molto scenograficol con l'oceano a fare quasi sempre da sfondo. Una volta entrati in città, difficilmente resisterete al richiamo del mare e della spiaggia, ma Cascais è molto altro, grazie ad un centro storico vibrante e palazzine dall'architettura molto interessante, tanto che un tempo era luogo di residenza estiva delle famiglie della nobile borghesia portoghese. Ma cosa c'è da vedere a Cascais? Molto, moltissimo...sia che siate appassionati di storia o arte. Ma il tour a piedi di Cascais non può non iniziare dalle due spiagge, le più famose, situate proprio a ridosso del centro storico: Praia Nossa Senhora da Conceição e Praia da Duquesa. Protette dai forti venti che caratterizzano questa zona del portogallo, queste due spiagge sono popolate in ogni momento dell'anno ma soprattutto in alta stagione: in particolare Praia da Conceição perchè molto più grande e capace di offrire diversi servizi come il servizio sdraio e ombrelloni, bar e ristoranti dai quali ammirare la splendida spiaggia.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN CASCAIS - THE CITY WALKING TOUR
The stretch from Cabo da Roca to Cascais is very scenic with the ocean almost always in the background. Once you enter the town, you will find it hard to resist the lure of the sea and the beach, but Cascais is much more than that, thanks to a vibrant old town and mansions with very interesting architecture, so much so that it was once the summer residence of Portuguese aristocratic middle-class families. But what is there to see in Cascais? There is so much to see and do, whether you are a history or art enthusiast. But the walking tour of Cascais cannot but start with the two beaches, the most famous, located right next to the historic center: Praia Nossa Senhora da Conceição and Praia da Duquesa. Protected from the strong winds that characterize this area of Portugal, these two beaches are populated at all times of the year but especially during peak season: in particular Praia da Conceição, because it is much larger and able to offer different services such as sunbed and umbrella service, bars and restaurants from which vistors can admire the beautiful beach.
Spostandosi verso ovest comincia il vero e proprio centro storico di Cascais, tante piccole strade acciottolate ricche di pittoreschi edifici. Il cuore pulsante è Praca 5 de Outubro, la quale si affaccia sulla baia e regalaun panorama da cartolina, anche grazie al Palazzo del consiglio risalente al XVIII secolo. Costeggiando il mare arriverete alla Cittadella (Cidadela de Cascais, ingresso gratuito), una fortezza del XVI secolo costruita per difendere la costa del Portogallo dagli attacchi di pirati e invasori spagnoli. Qualche tempo dopo divenne addirittura residenza reale, voluta fortemente da Re Luigi I di Braganza come residenza estiva. Da qui si gode di una vista impareggiabile sulla baia di Cascais.
Leggermente fuori Cascais, sempre lungo la costa (20 minuti a piedi dalla Cittadella), non perdetevi una delle icone della città, ovvero la Boca do Inferno, un'incredibile voragine tra le rocce che produce un suono molto simile ad un lamento umano. E per gli appassionati di arte? Riduciamo la scelta a tre opzioni, partendo dalla principale, Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, un museo aperto nel 2009 e dedicato alla vita ed alle opere della grande artista portoghese Paula Rego. L'edificio che ospita il museo è davvero molto affascinante (piramidi rosse progettate da Eduardo Souto de Moura), così come le opere di Paula Rego suddivise in collezioni ricche di dipinti, disegni e stampe della celebre pittrice ed artista visiva.
Located on the outskirts of the city center, still along the coast (20 minutes walk from the Citadel), don't miss one of the city's icons, namely the Boca do Inferno, an incredible chasm between the rocks that produces a sound very similar to a human wail. And what for art enthusiasts? Let's narrow the keychains to three options, starting with the main one, Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, a museum opened in 2009 and dedicated to the life and works of the great Portuguese artist Paula Rego. The building that houses the museum is really quite fascinating (red pyramids designed by Eduardo Souto de Moura), as are the works of Paula Rego divided into collections full of paintings, drawings and prints by the famous painter and visual artist.
Gli altri musei da visitare sono il Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães che vanta opere di artisti portoghesi ed internazionali oltre a porcellane e gioielli di grande valore e la Casa Museu de Santa Maria, una residenza del 1902 che ospita una collezione di azulejos e dipinti del barocco.
The other museums to visit are the Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães, which boasts works by Portuguese and international artists as well as valuable porcelain and jewelry, and the Casa Museu de Santa Maria, a 1902 mansion that houses a collection of azulejos and Baroque paintings.
