On the road again - The epic return to the "Mother Road" (day 17: Glendale - Santa Monica, 24 miles/40 km)

Ci siamo. Il viaggio lungo la Route 66 sta per concludersi, dopo oltre cinquemila chilometri percorsi e dieci stati attraversati (8 quelli legati alla Mother Road), due settimane di emozioni intense, di pianti, di scoperte, riscoperte e persino cambiamenti di opinione (Tulsa, il Grand Canyon...) lungo la strada più famosa al mondo. Da Chicago a Los Angeles, dalle praterie dell'Illinois all'abbagliante California, passando per le terre dei cowboys sino ai luoghi sacri per i nativi americani, dai musei sulla Main Street of America ai racconti di chi ancora oggi lotta con tutte le sue forze per manterere in vita un sogno. Ma non è ancora tempo nè di bilanci e neppure per emozionarsi. La sveglia suona prestissimo perchè in tarda serata prenderemo il nostro volo che ci riporterà in Italia e c'è una città, Los Angeles, che Roberta non ha mai visto. Il tempo è poco, poco meno di ventiquattro ore ed in quel "chissà se ci tornerò, quindi Marco... fammi vedere il più possibile" pronunciato da Roberta la sera prima era racchiuso lo spirito con cui avremmo approcciato l'ultima giornata. Nonostante il caos della "città degli angeli", le distanze, il traffico... no, avremmo comunque visto le cose principali e ci saremmo goduti ogni secondo di L.A: il traguardo è ormai lì ad un passo...

Here we go. The journey along Route 66 is about to end, after more than five thousand kilometers traveled and ten states crossed (eight of which are linked to the Mother Road), two weeks made of intense emotions, tears, discoveries, rediscoveries and even changes of heart (Tulsa, the Grand Canyon...) along the most famous road in the world. From Chicago to Los Angeles, from the prairies of Illinois to dazzling California, from cowboy lands to Native American holy sites, from the museums connected to the Main Street of America to the stories of those who still fight with all their might to keep a dream alive. But it's not yet time tomake budgets or even get emotional. The alarm goes off very early because late in the evening we will take our flight back to Italy and there is a city, Los Angeles, that Roberta has never seen. The time is short, just under twenty-four hours and in that "I wonder if I'll go back, so Marco... let me see as much as possible" uttered by Roberta the night before was contained the spirit with which we would approach the last day. Despite the chaos of the "city of angels," the distances, the traffic... We are really ready to see the main places and enjoy every second of LA: the finish line is now just a step away...

COSA VEDERE A LOS ANGELES IN UN GIORNO

Cosa vedere a Los Angeles in un giorno? La scelta non è facile perchè come avete ormai avuto modo di conoscere, le distanze e soprattutto il traffico condizionano moltissimo gli spostamenti nella City of Angels. Ma, se vi sveglierete presto al mattino ed avrete scelto un hotel strategico, riuscirete a visitare quelli che io chiamo i "mighty five", ovvero i cinque luoghi imperdibili quando si visita Los Angeles: il Griffith Observatory e le quattro più famose città che compongono l'area metropolitana di L.A: Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Venice e Santa Monica. E l'aver scelto di pernottare a Glendale ci permette di essere i primi ad accedere al Griffith Observatory: il complesso apre alle 10, quindi possiamo soltanto ammirare la splendida vista sulla città, ma il vantaggio è che troviamo parcheggio (gratis appunto sino alle 10 del mattino) proprio di fronte all'osservatorio. Il Griffith Observatory domina la città ed offre ai suoi visitatori  splendidi panorami sull’area urbana e sulla scritta di Hollywood: visitarlo significa intraprendere un vero e proprio viaggio alla scoperta dello spazio e toccare con mano la storia del progresso che l’uomo ha fatto per arrivare a scoprire sempre qualcosa in più dell’ignoto che lo circonda. 

WHAT TO SEE IN LOS ANGELES IN ONE DAY

What to see in Los Angeles in one day? The choice is not easy because as you probably know, distances and above all traffic greatly influence every travel in the City of Angels. But if you wake up early in the morning and choose a strategic hotel, you'll be able to visit what I call the "mighty five," the five must-see places when visiting Los Angeles: the Griffith Observatory and the four most famous cities that make up the LA metropolitan area: Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Venice, and Santa Monica. And choosing to stay overnight in Glendale allows us to be the first to access the Griffith Observatory: the complex opens at 10 a.m., so we can only admire the splendid view of the city, but the advantage is that we find parking (free until 10 a.m.) right in front of the observatory. Griffith Observatory dominates the city and offers its visitors amazing views of the urban area and the Hollywood sign: visiting it means embarking on a true journey ofspace discoveries.

Poco sotto non perdetevi il Lake Hollywood Park, ovvero il punto di vista privilegiato per fotografare la scritta di Hollywood. È un ampio parco pubblico incastonato fra le colline e le strade strette e tortuose su cui si affacciano alcune delle abitazioni più esclusive della città.

La visita del quartiere di Hollywood si conclude con la mitica Hollywood Walk of Fame. Per recuperare tempo e non spendere un patrimonio lasciat la vostra auto in Selma Avenue ed avventuratevi nel cuore del quartiere, dove ad attendervi ci saranno più di 2600 personaggi del mondo dello spettacolo immortalati su un marciapiede con delle simboliche stelle. 

The visit to the Hollywood neighborhood ends with the legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame. To make up time and avoid spending a fortune, leave your car on Selma Avenue and venture into the heart of the neighborhood, where more than 2,600 entertainment personalities will be waiting for you, immortalized on a sidewalk with symbolic stars

Se siete degli appassionati di cinema, non perdetevi le mani e le impronte più famose nei pressi del Teatro Cinese di Grauman (TCL Chinese Theatre) ed il Dolby Theatre che  è l’edificio in cui ogni anno vengono assegnati gli Oscar durante la celebre cerimonia.

If you're a film buff, don't miss the most famous hands and footprints near Grauman's Chinese Theatre (TCL Chinese Theatre), and the Dolby Theatre that is the building where the Oscars are awarded every year during the famous ceremony.

Spostandosi sempre più verso ovest, e quindi verso l'oceano, incrociamo Beverly Hills che, con i suoi 37mila abitanti, compone con Bel Air e Holmby Hills il Platinum Triangle. Ai tempi della sua fondazione qui si coltivavano fagioli, ora è una fiorente comunità in una graziosa area collinare dove gli abitanti vivono nel lusso fra ville, macchine lussuose e strade alberate ben curate. C'è di tutto, ma niente ospedali e neppure cimiteri. Per questo si dice che “nessuno nasce e nessuno muore a Beverly Hills“. Il parcheggio (gratuito per due ore) è situato al 438 N Beverly D: da qui raggiungerete in pochissimi minuti Rodeo Drive, un tempo uno dei primi insediamenti spagnoli, ora la via commerciale più nota di tutto il mondo. 

Moving further and further west, and therefore towards the ocean, we cross Beverly Hills which, with its 37 thousand inhabitants, makes up the Platinum Triangle with Bel Air and Holmby Hills. When it was founded, beans were grown here, but now Beverly Hills is a thriving community in a charming hilly area where residents live in luxury among villas, luxurious cars, and well-maintained tree-lined streets. There's everything, but no hospitals or even cemeteries. That's why it's said that “no one is born and no one dies in Beverly Hills“. Parking (free for two hours) is located at 438 N Beverly D: from here you will be able to reach Rodeo Drive in just a few minutes, once one of the first Spanish settlements, now the most famous shopping street in the whole world.

Il Venice Canal Historic District è la zona dei canali ideata da Abbot Kinney nel 1905, quella per cui questa città da oltre 40mila abitanti prende il nome di Venice. Lasciamo l'auto in una via laterale (592 Olive Ave) e attraversiamo questa bellissima zona residenziale, puntato dritto verso i suoi canali, fatti di graziose case e ponticelli. E poi c'è la sua spiaggia, Venice Beach, con il suo Venice Boardwalk, un ampio lungomare dal quale ammirare tra un negozio di souvenir e l'altro, numerosi campi sportivi, piste di skateboard, palestre e molto altro. Sì, Venice Beach oltre ad essere un luogo di culto per gli artisti, è la Mecca dello sport losangeleno.

The Venice Canal Historic District is the canal area created by Abbot Kinney in 1905, which is why this city of over 40,000 inhabitants is called Venice. We leave the car in a side street (592 Olive Ave) and then walk through this beautiful residential area, pointing straight towards its canals, made of pretty houses and small bridges. And then there is the beach, Venice Beach, with its Venice Boardwalk, a wide promenade from which visitors can admire numerous sports fields, skateboard tracks, gyms and much more. Yes, Venice Beach, besides being a place of worship for artists, is the Mecca of Los Angeles sports.

L'abbiamo lasciata per ultima, perchè la verità è che sapevamo in cuor nostro che una volta raggiunta l'incantevole Santa Monica, una stupenda città di 90mila abitanti affacciata sull'oceano pacifico, e di conseguenza il suo celeberrimo pier (il molo) immortalato in mille film e serie tv, beh... ciò significava che il nostro viaggio era ormai arrivato alla sua conclusione. La Route 66 termina proprio qui, a Santa Monica, sul molo, dopo 2448 miglia di sogni e scoperte, ed anche per noi è giunto il momento di salutare. 

We left it for last, because the truth is that we knew in our hearts that once we reached the enchanting Santa Monica, a beautiful city of 90,000 inhabitants overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and consequently its famous pier immortalized in many and many films and TV series, well... that meant that our journey had now come to an end. Route 66 ends right here, in Santa Monica, on the pier, after 2,448 miles of dreams and discoveries, and it's time for us to say goodbye too.

Lo facciamo dal cartello che simboleggia la fine del viaggio, la "end of the trail", mentre aspettiamo il nostro turno per scattare la foto di rito e condividere con gli altri viaggiatori (quelli che l'hanno percorsa tutta, da Chicago a Los Angeles) le emozioni ed i ricordi più belli. Davanti a noi ci sono spagnoli, canadesi e persino olandesi: ognuno di loro ha qualcosa da raccontare, qualcosa per cui questo viaggio rimarrà indimenticabile.

We are doing this from the sign symbolizing the end of the journey, the "end of the trail," while we wait our turn to take the customary photo and share the most beautiful emotions and memories with other travelers (those who have traveled it all, from Chicago to Los Angeles). In front of us are Spaniards, Canadians, and even Dutch: each of them has something to tell, something for which this journey will remain unforgettable.

E, mentre lasciamo Santa Monica e con la nostra auto a noleggio ci dirigiamo verso il LAX, l'enorme aeroporto internazioale losangeleno, con la mente ripercorriamo tutti i bei momenti vissuti durante questo viaggio epico: dalla colazione da Lou Mitchell's a Chicago all'incontro con Goerge alla Gary's Gay Parita Gas Station in Missouri, dai sentieri del Kasha Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument al "Get your kicks on Route 66" che abbiamo ascoltato commossi in Arizona, al Hackberry General Store, dalla passeggiata per il downtown di Tulsa alla vista del Gateway Arch in Missouri, dalle cadillac conficcate nel terreno nel Texas Panhandle al più bel motel di sempre, il Blue Swallow.. E allora, cara Route 66...

And, as we leave Santa Monica and drive our rental car to LAX, the enormous Los Angeles International Airport, we mentally retrace all the good times we experienced during this epic journey: from breakfast at Lou Mitchell's in Chicago to meeting Goerge at Gary's Gay Parita Gas Station in Missouri, from the trails of Kasha Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument to the moment we listened to "Get Your Kicks on Route 66." in Arizona, at the Hackberry General Store, from the walk through downtown Tulsa to the view of the Gateway Arch in Missouri, from the cadillacs stuck in the ground in the Texas Panhandle to the most beautiful motel ever, the Blue Swallow. So, dear Route 66...
