Texas and New Mexico (part 5, Chama and Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Road)

Avevamo programmato tutto il trip 2013 con mesi di anticipo e, nonostante avessi insistito con Ale quasi allo sfinimento (anche per colpa del mio idolo Federico Buffa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XM_GeuTY9VI) perchè questo benedetto trenino io volevo proprio farlo, avevamo deciso di evitarlo per svariati motivi (costo, intorno ai 90 dollari, durata del giro panoramico etc...). Quel giorno avremmo dovuto trascorrerlo a Taos per poi dormire comunque a Chama ma spendendo la giornata in modo diverso. Qualcosa nella testa ci dice che il treno s'ha da fare, non vogliamo avere rimpianti. Mai scelta fu più azzeccata... Cambiamo idea la sera prima di lasciare Santa Fe, quindi sveglia alle 6 del mattino per poter essere a Chama entro le 10, orario in cui il treno lascia la curiosa città al confine con il Colorado...

we planned all the 2013 before leaving for the Us and, even if i tried to convince Ale to do the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Road, we decided to skip this panoramic train because of a lot of things like costs (90 dollars) or time. According our planning we should have spent that day in Taos , but something in our mind was telling us to reconsider the train. The night before leaving Santa Fe we took our decision: a big yes to the Cumbre and Toltec Scenic Road. We wake up early in the morning and go straight to Chama because the train is leaving the curious town in the north of New Mexico at 10...

Arrivati in biglietteria ecco la doccia gelida. Per la giornata tutti i biglietti sono esauriti, il treno è pieno. Marco si dimentica di essere timido e le prova davvero tutte mentre l'Ale va a fare il check in in Hotel ("abbiamo lasciato Santa Fe per correre qui, sono un giornalista e son qui per questo, stiamo in piedi non c'è bisogno del posto....). Insomma, fatto sta che la signora, che già si sentiva quasi in colpa a dir no, alla fine effettua una decina di chiamate, muove mezzo mondo e dopo mezz'ora di attesa ci trova clamorosamente due posti. Com'è o come non è sono abbastanza sicuro che se fossimo stati in Italia ora sarei qui a parlare d'altro... Intanto torna l'Ale e mi racconta che, se avessimo aspettato la sera a fare il check-in avremmo dormito in macchina, perchè alle 5 la signora che lo gestisce si ritira. Chama è piccola (300 abitanti), strana, ma unica: noi la porteremo sempre nel cuore insieme alle persone che ci vivono.

At the ticket office an ice shower. For the day the tickets are already sold, the train is full. While Ale is doing the check-in at the hotel, Marco forgets for a while that he is shy ("we left Santa Fe because we wanted to be here, i'm a journalist and i'm here because of this, there's no need to have a seat..." he says)... the woman, sad almost like Marco, does not less than ten phone calls and at the end we finally have our tickets. Ale is coming, Marco gives her the good news and she says that it was a good idea to do the check in in the morning. At 5pm the owner of the hotel leaves her office. Chama is strange (300 inhabitants), but unique: we will always keep this town and the people who live there in our heart.

Compriamo i ticket (85 dollari) per il tragitto completo, ovvero che ci porterà col treno fino ad Antonito (pranzo compreso nel prezzo), in Colorado, per poi far ritorno a Chama in bus intorno alle 18.

We decide to buy the "full" ticket (85 dollars, lunch included): the train will take us till Antonito, in Colorado. For the return there will be a bus that take us to Chama.

Sembra di tornare indietro nel tempo, vuoi per le caratteristiche del treno, vuoi per il paesaggio...

...fatto sta che in un amen sono già le 13 ed il treno, appena varcato il confine con il Colorado, si ferma in una baita per il pranzo. E' la classica mensa americana, noi l'apprezziamo come del resto anche i 150-200 turisti che affollano la baita. Soprattutto i dolci, ce ne sono tantissimi e ne puoi mangiare quanti ne vuoi...

We have just entered in Colorado and it's lunch time. The train stops near a big House: we and the other tourists appreciate the food, especially the desserts...

Nell'ora abbondante prima che il treno riparta ci gustiamo l'aria di montagna...

Ripartiamo e, vuoi perchè siamo pieni, vuoi perchè il tragitto è comunque molto lungo, ci addormentiamo per un bel quarto d'ora. Ritrovate le energie, usciamo sulla carrozza all'aperto e, grazie all'argomento pallacanesto (eravamo vestiti con nell'ordine, magliette di Okc Thunder e Ny Knicks e solita felpetta dei Celtics), facciamo amicizia con Alan, il capotreno.

The trip takes 6-7 hours and after lunch (maybe because we've eaten too much) we sleep for 15 minutes. The sun forces us to wake up and, after a coffee, we meet Alan, one of the conductors of the train. We start talking about basketball and after one hour we know everything about him. Special person.

Ci racconta del suo amore per l'Italia (si fa mandare addirittura il vetro per sistemare la casa dal nostro paese) e passiamo tutto il pomeriggio a parlare con lui del più e del meno sotto il cielo più bello d'America...

He tells us about his love for Italy (he bought the glass for his house from our country) and we spend all the afternoon with him under the most beautiful sky of the America.

Gli chiediamo un posto dove poter far colazione il giorno successivo e lui, prima di salutarci a fine giornata, ci regala una confezione di muffin, uno più buono dell'altro. Unico!

We ask him about where to go for breakfast the day after and Alan, before says goodbye, gives us a pack of delicious muffins (4!). 

Appena rientrati a Chama optiamo per la cena immediata, ci fiondiamo in un saloon e mangiamo uno dei burger più buoni della spedizione...

Once back in Chama we directly go to a Saloon to have dinner: we eat one of the best burgers of the trip...

e anche parecchio grandicello nonostante i soli 4.95 dollari.

Al termine della cena ci spostiamo nella zona bar del Saloon dove oltre ad ascoltare buona musica country live e bere una budlight...

After dinner we move to the "bar area" of the saloon where we listen to a good country music, drink a budlight...

facciamo amicizia con un gruppo di cowboy. Ma a far diventare la giornata e la città di Chama speciali sono, insieme ad Alan, una famiglia di cowboy/cowgirl che ci porta con loro in giro per la città. Ovviamente a cavallo (e noi sulla carrozza), solo perchè "...da noi si fa così con gli amici" ci dicono.

And we meet a group of cowboys. A couple take us for a ride around the town with their horses. Why? "Because here it's normal with our friends..." was their answer.

Vorremmo lasciar loro una sorta di mancia, ma non c'è verso. Decidiamo dunque, dopo aver scattato la foto di rito, di pagargli un paio di budweiser al saloon senza dirgli niente. Penso abbiamo apprezzato...

We would like to leave them a tip, but there is nothing to do. We decide, after the final picture, to pay them two budweiser at the saloon. Appreciate...

In un amen è già sera, è tempo dunque di tornare in Hotel, unico come unica è Chama, New Mexico...

Questo hotel l'abbiamo trovato cercando in google perché sui classici siti di prenotazione non c'era nessuna offerta per Chama, abbiamo quindi mandato una e-mail a Barbara, la proprietaria gentilissima, e abbiamo prenotato tutto direttamente con lei, lasciando solo il numero di carta di credito come cauzione, l'addebito però avviene direttamente in hotel!
