Bremen and Hamburg, the "nordsee derby" (part 1, Bremen)

Che la Germania non sia soltanto Berlino e Monaco è risaputo, ma non tutti sanno delle potenzialità delle due città regine del nord dello stato, Brema e l'ancor più grande Amburgo. Certo, se non fosse stato per il fratello di Marco che da ormai due anni vive in quel di Brema non le avremmo probabilmente ancora visitate, ma a conti fatti ci saremmo persi due città carinissime, comode da raggiungere (ryanair vola su Brema sicuramente da Milano e Pisa, Germanwings su Amburgo) ed a prezzi competitivi. Un solo appunto, spesso fa molto, molto freddo...

Everybody knows that Germany is not only Berlin and Munich, not everybody knows about the potential of the two major city of the north of Germany: Bremen and the bigger Hamburg. Well, Marcos' brother is living in Bremen and this is why we've had the opportunity to visit this two important cities: otherwise we would have missed two "must visit" places, easy to get to (the low-cost Ryanair connects Bremen to Milan and Pisa, Germanwings flies to Hamburg) and with competitive prices. Just one thing, sometimes it's really, really cold.

Cominciamo da Brema, la città che conosciamo meglio, una città operaia, ma nello stesso tempo ricca di fascino e capace di richiamare moltissimi turisti. E per noi è stata una grande sorpresa. Qui le religioni sono sostanzialmente due:la chiesa evangel... ehm... no, la birra (la fabbrica della Becks, enorme, si trova non lontanissimo dal centro città ed è visitabile) ed il... Werder Bremen, la storica squadra locale di calcio. E no, non è uno scherzo. Ve ne accorgerete nel momento stesso in cui atterrerete all'aereoporto di Brema, con la scritta "Werder Bremen" che vi darà il benvenuto invece del consueto "wilkommen".

Let's start from Bremen, the city we know best, a city that works, but at the same time fascinating and able to attract many tourists. And for us it has been a big surprise. Here religions are basically two: the evangelic... well ... no, religions here are beer (the huge Becks factory is not very far from the city center and can be visited) and Werder Bremen, the soccer local team. No, that is not a joke. You'll notice that while you're landing at the Bremen airporto, when "Werder Bremen"welcomes you instead of the usual "wilkommen".

E fidatevi, assistere ad una partita del Werder al Weser Stadion non sarà un'esperienza come le altre. Sempre che riusciate a trovare i biglietti...

Trust us, watch a game of Werder Bremen at the Weser Stadion would be an experience like no other. If you find out a ticket, because it's always sold out!

Non essendo immensa Brema può essere sostanzialmente visitata a piedi in un solo week-end. Tutto ruota intorno al fiume Weser (qui c'è il porto più antico di Germania, il Bremerhaven, secondo per grandezza solo a quello di Amburgo) e ad un centro storico racchiuso e molto vivibile, tra negozi alla moda, edifici storici, caffè e ristoranti.

Bremen is not very huge and can be substantially explored by walk in just a week end. Everything comes around the Weser river (here there is the oldest port in Germany, the Bremerhaven, second largest after the one in Hamburg) and the historical citycenter, enclosed and very livable, with  shops, historic buildings, coffee and restaurants.

D'altronde ci sono 1200 anni di storia da raccontare e popoli arrivati, grazie al porto, da ogni angolo del mondo.

In Bremen there are more than 1200 years of history and people who have come from all over the world thanks to the port.

Marktplaz è la piazza principale, con il bellissimo municipio (rathaus)...


Marktplaz is the main square, with the beautiful Town Hall (rathaus)...

 e la statua di Rolando (Bremen Roland) che noi conosciamo come l'Orlando Furioso di Ariosto. E' il protettore della città e la leggenda narra che, fino a quando questa statua resterà intatta, Brema sarà protetta ed in tempo di guerra i tedeschi fecero di tutto per proteggerla dagli assalti

 and the statue of Roland (Bremen Roland) that ialian know as the "Orlando Furioso" of Ariosto. It protects the city and the legend tells that until this statue is intact, Bremen will be safe. For this reason during the second world war germans did everything to protect it.

Caffè all'aperto, turisti e negozi (il più affascinante è sicuramente la cioccolateria, entrate ed assaggiate le praline, soprattutto quelle al cocco!) caratterizzano la piazza, colma di gente sostanzialmente dal mattino alla sera...

Outdoor cafes, tourists and shops (the most fascinating is definitely the chocolate shop) characterize the square, full of people, basically from morning to night ...

Non lontano da Marktplatz c'è il monumento sicuramente più fotografato dell'intera città: i Musicanti di Brema, conosciuti in tutto il mondo per la favola dei fratelli Grimm: un asino, un cane, un gatto ed un gallo. Non c'è bisogno che spieghiamo dove sia: troverete almeno 20-30 persone ad ogni ora del giorno in coda per una fotografia mentre toccano la zampa dell'asino come portafortuna.

Not far from Marktplatz there is the monument definitely most photographed of the entire city: the Bremen Town Musicians, known worldwide for the Brothers Grimm fairy tale: a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster. No need to explain where this monument is: you will find at least 20-30 people at any time of day in line, waiting for a picture while touching the leg of the donkey.

In una delle vie a ridosso da Marktplatz c'è Bottcherstrasse, una serie di case in mattone rosso voluto da colui che inventò il caffè decaffeinato, Ludwig Roselius.

In one of the closest streets to Marktplatz there is Bottcherstrasse street: there, a series of red brick houses built by the man who invented the decaffeinated coffee, Ludwig Roselius.

dove troverete anche Schuttinger Brauerei: la sera sarà l'ideale per una tipica cena tedesca che ovviamente adoriamo. Noi, ma è scontato, da li a qualche ora, ci torneremo. Siamo o no in Germania? Possiamo farci mancare una wiener schnietzel deliziosa ed un wurst di mezzo metro, il più grande che abbiamo mai assaggiato? Da bere, ovviamente, Weiss bier

where you can also find the Schuttinger Brauerei: at evening thi will be the perfect place for a typical german dinner. At dinner time we'll be there for a typical wiener schietzel, the biggest wurst ever and a Weiss beer!

Una prima piccola pausa prima di continuare la visita della città potrebbe essere rappresentata dal bellissimo mulino, appena fuori il centro storico lungo in il Wallanlagen. Al suo interno c'è anche un delizioso caffè, ideale per ricaricare le batterie in un luogo da fiaba...

A small break before continuing the tour of the city could easily be the beautiful mill, just outside the city center along the Wallanlagen. Inside the mill there is a cafè, the perfect place if you're looking for a little bit of quiet in a fairytale place ...
