We are crossing Arizona from the bottom to the top and day by day our trip gets more interesting. As a matter of fact, today is the "Sedona's Day" one of the best cities of the entire Arizona. The appointment with the red city is at 5 p.m. with the "Pink Jeep Tour". Before this, as usual, we've changed our programs through the day: first we leave Scottsdale and drive through the highway 17, then we take the left (69) till Prescott Valley with its famous road 89A, one of the most awsome scenic bways of Arizona.
We go through Woodchute Mountains and the villages of Jerome and Clarkdale, a longer road that will give us awesome views. After the checking in in our new motel in Cottonwood (Sedona is the lodging capital, but it's too expensive), it's time for the first step: Montezuma Castle.
Well, it was not scheduled, but few things we decide to see and visit when we travel are actually scheduled.
We are at Camp Verde, about 20 km South of Sedona. This castle is dated between 1400 and 1000 BC, when Sinagua population used to live here.
Why Montezuma? Wrongly this castle is connected to Aztec, which its best known figure was Montezuma II even if Montezuma was born 40 years later the abandonment of the castle.
As a National Monument, even here we can use the annual pass for a fast visit before reaching Sedona, where nature and art meet.
Sedona (www.visitsedona.com) is not a city like any other. Well known in the world for the beauty of its red rocks, Sedona is the second tourist attraction of Arizona in popularity order.
The richness and the cultural diversity make Sedona a Mecca for artists, writers, entrepreneurs and, of course, tourists.
As soon as you cross Sedona's gates, the scenery changes. The red colour dominates here and the first thing that comes to your mind is "how lucky the inhabitants of this charming place in the heart of Arizona are".
We would first stop at Slide Rock State Park, an incredible natural water slide, but the clock is ticking and we choose to visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross (Free of charge) along the 179.
It's a Roman Catholic chapel dating back to 1932. The sculptor, Staude, was inspired in its construction project from the newborn Empire State Building in New York City.
Walking up the ramp leading to the chapel, a beautiful panorama appears around us: the entire Oak Creek valley. For the quality of hotels / resorts and natural wonders this a place with no equals in the United States. The photo below just confirms this...
Leaving the chapel we head to the heart of Sedona: the "pink jeep tour" is waiting for us.
What can we say? An amazing experience. We've chosen the "broken arrow tour", the most beautiful tour ($ 90). We booked the 5pm tour.
Two hours of fun along roads and rocks that only a 4 wheels could do.
Panorami incantevoli, racconti e aneddoti incredibili raccontateci dalla nostra simpaticissima guida (e pilota)...
Amazing views, incredible stories and anecdotes told us by our friendly guide (and driver) ...
...but also some excitement when we see our jeep climbs and descents the reddish rocks of Oak Creek valley ...
... along the Bell Rock, Chapel Butte, Rock of Gibraltar and the amazing views from Chicken Point and Submarine Rock.
Sunset is coming and the red rocks are now even more red. It's time to have dinner and we are lucky, we eat one the best burger of the entire trip at Red Rock Bbq, a beautiful restaurant with a beautiful view of the Oak Creek Canyon.
Before returning we stop at the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village, a typical Mexican shop village.
Shops are all closed now, so we can just have a walk. If Scottsdale is, as we said, one of 10 to 15 places where would be worth living, Sedona is even a step above ...
