Copenhagen, the "green capital" (day 2)

Con soli tre giorni a disposizione e tantissimi splendidi luoghi da poter visitare, il day 2 diventa un crocevia importante nella nostra spedizione danese. Tra le numerosi attrazioni che circondano Copenhagen scegliamo di visitare il Castello di Kronborg (Kronborg Slot) ad Helsingør, una cittadina situata lungo la costa, 50km a nord della capitale. Le due città sono molto ben collegate dal servizio ferroviario: alle 9 siamo già alla stazione "Nørreport" a "litigare" con il distributore automatico cercando di capire la modalità di funzionamento dei biglietti del treno. Scopriremo solo al ritorno che siamo andati bene, ma non benissimo, avendo acquistato solamente il biglietto di sola andata e non il "combined". Useremo tutte le "tattiche ialiane" in nostro possesso con il controllore per salvarci dalla multa...

With just three days and a lot of wonderful places to explore, day 2 becomes an important crossroads in our Danish expedition. Among the many attractions that surround Copenhagen we choose to visit the Kronborg Castle (Kronborg Slot) in Helsingor, a small town along the coast, 50km north of the capital. The two cities are very well connected by rail service: at 9am we are at "Nørreport" station "fighting" with the machine and trying to understand the mode of operation of the train tickets. We then find out that we've only purchased a one way ticket... we don't exactly know what saved us from a fine.

Il percorso è affascinante, tra i boschi danesi ed il mare che ogni tanto fa capolino. La città di Kronborg sarebbe anche altrettanto carina, ma è il venerdì di Pasqua ed è sostanzialmente tutto chiuso. Per le sue sue vie ci siamo noi e qualche altro temerario. In lontananza Kronborg, distante poco più di un km dalla stazione ferroviaria.

The path is fascinating, between the Danish forests and the sea that occasionally peeps out. The city of Kronborg would also be just as pretty, but it is the Easter Friday and everyrhing is closed. For his It's just us hitting the street. Kronborg castle in located 1 far km from the railway station.

Fa freddo, c'è molto vento (come sempre da queste parti) e pioviggina, ma la location è da favola, con il mare imponente proprio lì a due passi. Dall'esterno è bellissimo, davvero imponente.

It's cold, windy (as always here) and drizzling, but location is fabulous, with an impressive sea right there around the corner. From the outside it is beautiful, very impressive.

Kronborg è una fortezza circondata da cannoni: al suo interno si possono visitare le sale, tra cui la bellissima sala da ballo, a lungo la più grande d'Europa. Fu il Re Federico II a far costruire il castello tra il 1574 e il 1585 nel punto in cui la Danimarca è più vicina alla Svezia. Il costo del biglietto è di 12 euro

Kronborg is a fortress surrounded by cannons: you can visit the rooms, including the beautiful ballroom, the largest in Europe for ages. It was the King Frederick II himself who wanted the castle which was built between 1574 and 1585 at the point where Denmark is closer to Sweden. The entrance feee is 12 Euros

 Affascinanti sono anche le casematte, oscuri e labirintici passaggi che in tempo di guerra fungevano da postazione per i soldati. Queste umide stanze ne potevano accogliere anche mille.

Also the casemates are very fascinating: they are a kind of dark and labyrinthine passages that served during the war as a place for the soldiers. These damp rooms could have accommodated a thousand of them.

Ma a kronborg si possono anche vivere esperienze uniche, specialmente in estate, quando vanno in scena serate dedicate ad Amleto. Già, perchè questo è anche e soprattutto il "Castello di Amleto". Intorno al 1600, infatti, Shakespeare scrisse la famosa tragedia di Amleto, principe di Danimarca, e ambientò l'opera proprio qui, a Kronborg.

In Kronborg you can also enjoy unique experiences, especially in summer time, when evenings are dedicated to Hamlet. Yes, because this is also the "Castle of Hamlet." Around 1600, in fact, Shakespeare wrote the famous Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark,  and set his own work here in Kronborg.

Tra i due castelli comunque abbiamo, a onor del vero, di gran lunga preferito quello di Rosenborg, visitato il giorno prima.

Among the two castles we still prefer the one we visited the day before: Rosenborg Slot.

(Day 2 - Itinerary)

Tornati a Copenhagen riprendiamo immediatamente la visita della città. Il pomeriggio lo dedicheremo in primis all'isoletta di Slotsholmen, dove è situato il Palazzo Christiansborg (Christiansborg Slot) che alle spalle ha una storia lunga e travagliata ma che soprattutto è attualmente sede del potere esecutivo, legislativo e giudiziaro della Danimarca. Tutto ciò lo rende unico al mondo.

Back in Copenhagen we immediately resume the tour of the city. The afternoon will be dedicated primarily to the small island of Slotsholmen, where the Christiansborg Palace (Christiansborg Slot) is located. This building has lived a long and troubled history but above all it is now the seat of the executive, legislative and judiciary power of Denmark. All this makes Christiansborg unique in the world.

L'isola di Slotholmen è collegata alla terra ferma da otto ponti, il più famoso è il ponte di marmo (marmorbroen). Noi non l'abbiamo fatto, ma Christiansborg è visitabile dal martedì alla domenica (5 euro). Dalla torre si gode di una bella vista sulla città.

The island of Slotsholmen is connected to the mainland by eight bridges, the most famous one is the marble bridge (marmorbroen). We had not visited the palace, but you've to know that Christiansborg is open from Tuesday to Sunday (entrance fee: 5 euro). The tower offers a beautiful view of the city.

Lasciato il palazzo e raggiunta Christianhavn visitiamo la Vor Frelsers Kirche, famosa per le sue guglie.

Once left the palace we reach Christianhavn and Von Flelsers church, famous for its spiers.

Siamo in uno dei quartieri più affascinanti di Copenhagen, una zona residenziale in cui nasce e si sviluppa tuttavia anche la croce e delizia della città: Christiania. Nata nel 1971 quando una zona militare semiabbandonata venne occupata e dichiarata non solo libera, ma anche non soggetta a tassazione, da pensatori liberi. Un migliaio di persone vivono qui, tra murales, sculture, negozi, ma anche in quella sensazione di degrado che a noi non è per nulla piaciuto. Guide e turisti che l'hanno visitata ne parlano molto bene, noi probabilmente saremo gli unici a non farlo.

It's one of the most charming districts of Copenhagen, a residential area where a controversial neighborood was born and developed: its name is Christiania. It was founded in 1971 when a semi-abandoned military area was occupied and declared not only free, but also not subject to taxation,by freethinkers. A thousand people live here, between murals, sculptures, shops, but also in that feeling of degradation which we didn't appreciate at all. Guides and tourists who have visited Christiania always spend good words for this place, we will probably be the only ones who don't.

Perchè? Semplicemente perchè Christiania non è soltanto creatività, buona musica, murales e sculture all'aperto, ma anche un'area controversa e discussa, anche per via dello spaccio delle droghe leggere che spesso la rende turbolenta.

Why? Simply because Christian is not only creativity, good music, murals and outdoor sculptures, but also a controversial and debated area, even for street light drug dealing that often makes Christiania turbulent.

Non è un caso che sia assolutamente vietato correre, parlare al cellulare e, per larghi tratti, anche scattare foto. La nostra visita, che soprattutto Marco si aspettava potesse essere parecchio lunga, dura una quindicina di minuti scarsi: Christiania non fa per noi.

It is no coincidence that it is absolutely forbidden to run, talk on the phone and, in some parts of it, even take pictures. Our visit lasts about fifteen minutes: Christiania is not for us.

Sulla via del ritorno verso il centro storico uno scorcio della Copenhagen nuova, il cui simbolo è il Diamante Nero (purtroppo chiuso per la festività pasquale) che racchiude musei, bar e anche una biblioteca.

On the way back towards the old town we stop at the "new Copenhagen", whose symbol is the Black Diamond (unfortunately closed due to Easter holidays) with its museums, bars and even a library.

Nel centro storico invece il simbolo è sicuramente la Torre Circolare (round tower), il più antico osservatorio in Europa. Qui si cominciò ad osservare le stelle già nel 1642.  Anche questa torre vi regalerà un'affascinante vista sulla città che noi non riusciamo a goderci per via delle condizioni meteorologiche non proprio ottimali.

In the historical downtown the symbol is surely the Round Tower, the oldest observatory in Europe. Here people began to observe stars already in 1642. Even this tower will give you a fascinating view of the city that we can not enjoy because of weather conditions.

lasciamo invece per la chiusura della giornata il gioiello dell'intera città, il luogo che da sempre, insieme alla sirenetta, è simbolo di Copenhagen. Parliamo di Nyhavn, il porto turistico, zona sempre affollatissima e ricca di ristoranti e pub.

In the end of the day it comes the real jewell of the entire city, the place which has always been the symbol of Copenhagen: Nyhavn, the marina, a crowded area full of restaurants and pubs.

Da qui partono anche le principali escursioni in battello, ma sono soprattutto le case colorate a rendere davvero unico questo piccolo canale. Le migliori foto le scatterete sicuramente qui.

Boat tours can be done here, but what make this small canal unique are the colorful houses. The best photos will be definitely taken here.

E per il solito appuntamento con il miglior luogo in cui cenare a Copenhagen giochiamo il jolly. Chi l'ha detto che per una cena di qualità si debba spendere obbligatoriamente 30-40 euro a persona nel ricco nord. Studiando abbiamo scovato una validissima alternativa, il Paludan's book Cafe (23 di 1680), dove i libri convivono con piatti semplici ma di qualità. E soprattutto dove potrete cenare anche con una quindicina di euro a persona (cucina internazionale, porzioni abbondanti, prezzi abbordabilissimi). Siamo in una vecchia libreria nella zona universitaria: qui troverete persone che leggono un buon libro ed intanto si gustano una cena.

For the usual appointment with the best place to dine in Copenhagen we are about to play the wild card. You can find quality without spendid much money even in Copenhagen. Where? We studied a lot and found a place called Paludan's Book Cafe (23 of 1680 on tripadvisor), where books coexist with simple but quality dishes And above all, where you can dine spending fifteen Euros per person (international cuisine, generous portions, good prices). We are in a old library in the university area: here you will find people who read a good book or enjoy a dinner. Not bad.

Copenhagen, the "green capital" (day 3)

Fino al 2000 raggiungere la Svezia da Copenhagen, o viceversa, non era affatto facile. Seppur vicinissimi i due stati erano, infatti, raggiungibili solamente via mare. Ora non più. Con il capolavoro d'ingegneria chiamato ponte di Øresund le escursioni a Malmö, la prima grande città svedese oltreconfine sono diventate una sorta di tappa obbligata quando si visita Copenhagen. Una quarantina di minuti ed un ponte lungo 16 km (e costato tre miliardi di dollari) separano migliaia di turisti che ogni giorni affollano quel gioiellino chiamato Malmö. Ed è proprio qui che ci stiamo dirigendo, ma non con il decisamente più suggestivo bus che regala viste magnifiche sul mare, ma con il ben più comodo treno che dall'aereoporto di Copenhagen ci condurrà in quel di Malmö. I controlli sono severi, sia prima di salire sulla locomotiva, che poi all'arrivo. Pertanto non dimenticate di portare con voi i vostri documenti.

It wasn't easy reaching Sweden from Copenhagen, or viceversa, till 2000 altough they were very close each other. The two states, Denmark and Sweden, were infact reachable just by boat. Everything has changed thanks to the masterpiece of engineering called the Øresund bridge: nowadays trips to Malmo, the first major Swedish cities across the border, have become a sort of a must when you are visiting Copenhagen. Forty minutes traveling along a 16km bridge (it costed three billion dollars) separate thousands of tourists from Copenhagen to Malmö. We are not taking the bus which gives stunning views of the sea, we are on the train which (from the airport of Copenhagen) will lead us into Malmö. Passport controls are strict, both before leaving and then on arrival. Therefore do not forget to bring your documents with you.

 Cosa vedere a Malmö? Sentirete pareri discordanti dai vari viaggiatori. A noi è piaciuta parecchio, partendo ovviamente dal presupposto che... Copenhagen è ovviamente un'altra cosa. Sin dall'arrivo nella pulitissima e confortevole stazione si respira un'aria diversa: qui siamo davvero nel nord europa come un mediterraneo se l'aspetta.

What to see in Malmö? You will hear opposing views from various travelers. We liked this city a lot even if Copenhagen is obviously something much better. Since the arrival at the sparkling clean and comfortable station you realize that atmosphere is different: here we really are in northern Europe as a Mediterranean expects it.

Tutto è molto pulito ed in ordine. Subito fuori dalla stazione troverete un "tourist information" dove reperire una mappa e info sulla città.

Everything is very clean and tidy. Immediately outside the station you will find a "tourist information": the first thing to get is a map with information about the city.

Con i suoi 190 metri spicca il Turning Torso, il grattacielo progettato da Santiago Calatrava che pare girarsi su se stesso e che sicuramente ogni guida vi raccomanderà tra le cinque cose da vedere a Malmö. Il grattacielo appare più volte davanti a noi, ma nello stesso tempo ci sembra sempre così lontano. Lo ritroveremo quando ci avvieremo verso il mare...

With 190 meters stands the Turning Torso, the skyscraper designed by Santiago Calatrava that seems to turn in on itself and that surely any guide will recommend among the five things to see in Malmo. The skyscraper appears several times in front of us, but at the same time it always seems so far away.

Decidiamo dunque di non raggiungerlo e gli preferiamo invece il centro storico con la sua Stortorget, la piazza principale, ed i negozietti di Sodergatan.

So we prefer to visit the old town with its Stortorget, the main square, and the Sodergatan shops.

Ed è proprio qui che ci gustiamo, per pranzo, un favoloso ed economico burger american style ed un'insalata greca da "Surf Shack". Doveste passare da Malmö con un budget limitato saprete già dove recarvi...

Uno dei polmoni verdi è  Slottsparken, un bel parco situato tra il centro storico e la costa.

One of the green lungs is Slottsparken, a beautiful park located between the old town and the coast.

 Al suo interno anche Stadsbibliotek (la biblioteca) ed il Malmöhus slot, il castello di Malmö.

The park is also famous for its library (Stadsbibliotek) and the Malmöhus slot, the castle of Malmo.

Noi però abbiamo voglia di... mare. Allunghiamo di un paio di km il nostro tour e raggiungiamo la costa: capirete di essere sulla strada giusta quando troverete un molo con ristorante e spa annesse, il Ribersborgs Kallbadhus.

But we feel like we want... the sea! Walking for a few kilometers you will get to the coast: you'll know you're on the right path when you see a small pier with a restaurant with spa, named Ribersborgs Kallbadhus.

Tornati nel centro storico raggiungiamo un'altra famosa piazza cittadina, Södra Förstadsgatan, dove tra i tanti negozi spicca Hollandia, una pasticceria aperta addirittura nel 1903.

Back in the old town it's time for another famous town square, called Södra Förstadsgatan, which stands out among the many shops a famous bakery: its name is Hollandia, established in 1903.

La città non è grande e, se qualora non vogliate visitarla su uno dei tanti battelli turistici che scorrono lungo i canali, semplicemente camminando scoprirete ogni angolo nascosto della "piccola" Malmö. Il nostro tempo in Svezia è terminato: è l'ultimo giorno e abbiamo ancora alcune cose in sospeso a Copenhagen.

The city is not that big and if you don't want to walk just get one of the many tourist boats that run along the canals. Our time in Sweden is over: it is the last day and we still have some unfinished business in Copenhagen.

Proprio dietro al Nyhavn, infatti, ci sono due luoghi che ancora non abbiamo visitato: il primo è il Palazzo Reale di Amalienborg, la residenza invernale della regina con il suo "famoso" balcone.

Just behind Nyhavn, in fact, there are two places that we have not yet visited: the first one is the Royal Amalienborg Palace, the winter residence of the queen with its "famous" balcony.

Il secondo è il "frederiks Marmorkirken", la cattedrale di marmo. Senza alcun dubbio la più bella della città, con la sua cupola dorata che la sovrasta.

The second one is "Frederiks Marmorkirken", the marble cathedral. Without any doubt the most beautiful of the entire city, with its golden dome that overlooks it.

Ah, dove cenare a Copenhagen senza spendere un patrimonio ormai lo sapete. Noi avremmo voluto testare gli Smørrebrød (Normalmente è composto da una fetta di pane di segale di color marrone scuro (rugbrød) imburrato. Il condimento è costituito da fette di carne, pesce, salumi, formaggio) lungo il Nyhavn ma alla fine non abbiamo saputo resistere. Si torna al Paludan's Book Cafè. Questa volta optiamo per il piatto del giorno, il gulash...

Well, you already know about where to dine without spending much money you. We would have liked to test the Smørrebrød (normally consists of a slice of dark brown rye buttered bread called rugbrød. The dressing is made of slices of meat, fish, sausages, cheese) along the Nyhavn but in the end we couldn't resist...  We just go back to the Paludan's Book Café. This time we opt for the dish of the day, goulash ...
