Profondo northwest americano, a soli 150 miglia dalla British Columbia e quindi dal Canada. Siamo a Seattle, un po' fuori dalle tradizionali rotte turistiche del west americano, in uno stato, quello di Washington (da non confondere con la città, capitale statunitense) tra i più incantevoli e con la più alta qualità della vita del territorio americano. Pioviggina e fa spesso freddo (tra i tanti "nickname" di Seattle figurano "rain city" ed "emerald city" a causa delle rigogliose aree verdi), ma se cercate una città fuori dagli schemi, in cui non troverete mai per le strade persone indossare giacca e cravatta (o una, o l'altra) e dove non conta come appari, ma quello che fai e sai fare... ecco, Seattle è il posto giusto. Una città futuristica dal passato importante. Qui è nato il movimento musicale Grunge con i Nirvana ed i Pearl Jam, qui è nato Jimi Hendrix e da qui è passato lasciando un segno indelebile Bruce Lee, qui sono nati Starbucks e la Microsoft, qui ha sede la Boeing (a Renton, una quindicina di chilometri a sud della città). No, Seattle non è una città come le altre. E le caratteristiche uniche della città con uno degli Skyline più affascinanti del Nord America non finiscono qua. Gli abitanti "seattleiani" hanno un modo del tutto alternativo per riconoscersi lontano da casa: usano il prefisso telefonico della città, 206. E quale numero di camera avremmo mai potuto avere nel nostro hotel, il Marqueen? Ovviamente la 206. Two-Ohh-Six baby, Two-Ohh-Six. Benvenuti a Seattle...

American deep northwest, just 150 miles far from the British Columbia and then Canada border. We are in Seattle, a bit 'off the traditional tourist routes in the American West, in a state which is one of the most beautiful and with the highest quality of life, Washington state (do not confused it with Washington DC, the capital).Well, it rains a lot and often it's also very cold (among many Seattle's nicknames there are "rain city" and "emerald city" because of the lush green areas), but if you want a city outside the box, in which you will never find on the streets people wear jacket and tie at the same time and where it does not matter what you look like, but what you are and do ... well, then Seattle is the the best place. A futuristic city with an important past. The grunge music movement with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, was born here, Jimi Hendrix was born here, Starbucks and Microsoft were born here and Bruce Lee left an indelible mark. Also Boeing is based not far from Seattle, in Renton (10 miles south of the city). No, Seattle is not a city like any other. Definitely. And don't forget one of the best skylines of North America. The inhabitants have a completely alternative way to recognize themselves away from home: they use the area code of Seattle, 206. Which room number do we get at our hotel, the Marqueen? Obviously 206. Two-Ohh-six baby, Two-ohh-Six. Wecome to Seattle.

L'abbiamo elogiata, ma cosa vedere a Seattle? Innanzitutto va detto che "the rain city" si potrebbe dividere tranquillamente in due aree: la prima è l'anima storica, dowtown, con il market place e la "old" Seattle, l'altra relativamente più nuova con lo Space Needle, l'icona della città, a svolgere il ruolo di attrazione principale dell'area. Ed è proprio da qui che partiamo, non lontano dal nostro hotel. Siamo nel Seattle Center, un campus di 300mila metri quadrati a un chilometro e mezzo dal centro storico della città: ha accolto oltre 10milioni di visitatori nel 1962, in occasione dell’Expo ed è luogo di molte delle attrazioni della città di Seattle. Partendo dal già citato Space Needle, una stazione di osservazione con la forma di un missile che raggiunge i 184 metri di altezza. Un ascensore vi condurrà in cima in soli 41 secondi e da lì potrete godere di un'incredibile vista sulla città. Il Flag Pavilion & Plaza e la International Fountain sono locati nella la piazzetta del campo dominata dalla bella fontana con schizzi alterni e colorati: la musica cambia ogni mese, così come i giochi d’acqua. Noi incrociamo diversi bambini che... fanno il bagno, nonostante non faccia caldissimo.

We've exait it, but in the end, what a tourist shouldn't miss in Seattle? First of all it must be said that the "rain city" could be easily divided into two areas: the first one is the historical soul, dowtown, with the beautiful market place and the "old" Seattle, the  second one is ,relatively new: the icon is the Space Needle, the most visited attraction of the city. We start the visit of Seattle right from here, not far from our hotel. This is the Seattle Center, a 300 thousand square meters campus located one mile far from the historic old town. It has welcomed over 10 million visitors in 1962, at the Expo, and this is also the place of many of Seattle's sights. Starting from the already mentioned Space Needle, an observation station with the shape of a missile which is 184 meters tall. An elevator will take you to the top in just 41 seconds and from there you can enjoy an incredible view of the city. The Flag Pavilion & Plaza and the International Fountain are located in the square dominated by the beautiful fountain with alternating sketches and colored: the music changes every month, as well as the water features. We see several children having a bath even if is pretty cold.

Sempre all'interno del Seattle Center sorge la Key Arena, l'arena degli storici Seattle Supersonics, ora defunti (ma mai dire mai...), il Center House, ovvero il complesso che include il Center House Theater, sede della Seattle Shakespeare Company ed il Chihuly Garden and Glass (un mix tra vegetazione e sculture in vetro). E poi la musica, che a Seattle svolge un ruolo di primissimo piano. Il Experience Music Project (museo dedicato alla fantascienza ed alla musica), con l’annesso Science Fiction Music è un must per gli amanti di Jimi Hendrix, dei Nirvana e del genere grunge in generale, nonché dagli appassionati di Star Wars.

Still within the Seattle Center there is the Key Arena, the arena of the historic Seattle Supersonics, currently dead (but never say never ...), the Center House, which is the complex that includes the Center House Theater, home of the Seattle Shakespeare Company and the Chihuly Garden and Glass (a mix of greenery and glass sculptures). And then the music, of course which plays a major role in town. The Experience Music Project (a museum dedicated to science fiction and music), and the adjacent Science Fiction Music which is a must for lovers of Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana and the grunge genre in general, and for Star Wars fans.

A ridosso dello Space Needle è possibile prendere la monorotaia che nel giro di qualche minuto vi porterà in centro città. 

Behind the Space Needle you can ride the monorail: within a few minutes it will take you into downtown.

La prendiamo anche noi e raggiungiamo un altro dei simboli di Seattle: il Public Market Place. 

We are riding it too till reaching another symbol of the "emerald city": the Public Market Place.

Un insieme di colori e profumi. Il Market Place, principale luogo d'incontro dei "seattleiani" è una piccola gemma sul lungomare della città. Qui troverete le gallerie commerciali più frequentate, il mercato con le bancarelle sistemate in modo artistico e tanto altro ancora.

A set of colors and scents. The Market Place, the main meeting place of Seattle is a little gem on the city's waterfront. Here you will find the most popular shopping malls, the market with stalls arranged in an artistic way, and much more.

Ovviamente è soprattutto il cibo a catturare la nostra attenzione. Un pesce così fresco è difficile da trovare altrove.

It's obviously and especially the food to capture our attention. the seafood is really fresh. 

Dall'altro lato della strada notiamo uno starbucks. No, non uno starbucks qualunque. Fu proprio qui

che il 30 marzo 1971 tre amici (Jerry Baldwin, un insegnante di inglese, Zev Siegl, un insegnante di storia, e Gordon Bowker, uno scrittore) aprirono il primo di quello che poi con l'arrivo di Howard Schulz qualche anno più tardi, diventerà un impero.

Across the road we notice a starbucks. No, that's not a starbucks like any other. March 30, 1971. Right there three friends (Jerry Baldwin, an English teacher, Zev Siegl, a history teacher, and Gordon Bowker, a writer) opened the first of what will become an empire thanks to Howard Schulz.

Gli abitanti di Seattle, che ci erano stati dipinti come "snob", sono invece gentilissimi. Ed è proprio una commerciante che ci fornisce una "tip" fondamentale, mentre l'arte tra i viali della città si esprime in tutti i modi possibili e immaginabili. Anche con un murales di gomme da masticare.

We were told that the people of Seattle are "snob", actually they are very very kind. It's a nice shop assistant which provides us a "tip", while the art  is expressed in all the ways. Even with a chewing gums mural.

"State andando al Seattle Waterfont? Bene, non prendete le "cruises" che sono parecchio costose, salite sulla nave-taxi che vi porterà su una delle isole ad ovest della città". Un consiglio preziosissimo. Con una manciata di dollari saliamo sull'enorme ferry (lo stesso ferryboat che prese Derek Sheperd in Grey's Anatomy) che approda a Bainbridge Island.

"Are you going to the Seattle Waterfont? Well, do not take "cruises " which are quite expensive, get on the boat-taxi which will take you to one of the islands west of the city." An amazing advice. With a handful of dollars we drop on a huge ferry (the same ferry that  Derek Shepherd took in Grey's Anatomy) who lands in Bainbridge Island.

Il tragitto è affascinante. Lo Skyline di Seattle, splendido, si allontana all'orizzonte ed in una mezz'oretta buona approdiamo nell'isola di Bainbridge, uno di quei posti in cui varrebbe davvero la pena vivere.

The journey is fascinating. The beautiful skyline of Seattle is moving away on the horizon: here we are in Bainbridge island, one of those places where it really would be worth living.

Da visitare non c'è moltissimo, ma una passeggiata per le vie dell'isolotto ti riappacificano col mondo. L'ideale sarebbe avere una bicicletta per avventurarsi nel verde incredibile di Bainbridge.

There's not much to visit, but a walk through the streets of the islet fill up your soul with peace. Rent a bike or a boat would be the best way to explore this green amazing island.

Sulla via del ritorno appare di fronte a noi anche il mitico Mount Rainier, che da lontano sembra vegliare su Seattle. Una sorta di angelo custode della città. Sempre bianco e sempre affascinante.

On the way back it appears the mythical Mount Rainier in front of us, which  seems to watch over Seattle. A sort of guardian angel of the city. Always white and always fascinating.

Ah, Seattle è anche una città legata alla televisione. Prima con Twin Peaks e poi con Grey's Anatomy. E, se l'ospedale della celebre serie tv è in sostanza il Tacoma International Airport di Seattle, notiamo su internet che il pub dove sono soliti trovarsi i dottori di Grey's Anatomy ("da Joe"), potrebbe essere lo "Smith", situato a Capitol Hill, il quartiere gay della città. Ale, da grande amante della serie tv, non sta più nella pelle. Chiediamo info al personale, ma sia le cameriere che la direttrice non ne sanno nulla. Grey's Anatomy ha solo preso spunto da Smith per creare l'ambientazione del bar "Da Joe", ma non è qui che ha effettuato le riprese. In compenso, in un locale dove "va la gente del posto", la cena sarà deliziosa.

Well, Seattle is also a city strongly linked to the television. First of all thanks to Twin Peaks and then Grey's Anatomy. Two of most famous tv series. The Grey-Sloan Memorial hospital is essentially the Tacoma International Airport in Seattle, but we also notice on the internet that the bar where the doctors use to go ("Joe's") could be the "Smith", located in Capitol Hill, the gay district. Ale as a great lover of Grey's Anatomy, can't really wait. We ask the staff about the tv series but both waitresses and the manager don't know anything. Grey's Anatomy has only taken a cue from the "Smith" to create the ambience of the bar "Joe's", they didn't film there. On the other hand, this is a place where locals use to go and the dinner is obviously delicious.

Con lo Space Needle che s'illumina è tempo di rientrare. Nonostante il poco tempo a disposizione Seattle è già entrata nei nostri cuori. 

With the Space Needle that lights up it is time to return. Despite the short time Seattle has already entered into our hearts.

E' l'ultimo giorno a Seattle, ma sono anche e soprattutto le ultime 24 ore di un incredibile viaggio che ci ha portato a toccare ben 11 dei 50 stati americani. E, dopo quasi un mese a spasso negli Stati Uniti, cominciamo a risentire anche di un pizzico di stanchezza che non ci permetterà di visitare tutto quello che avremmo voluto. Qualche jolly l'abbiamo comunque giocato, come ad esempio il Lake View Cemetery, situato a Capitol Hill, subito a nord di Volunteer Park.

This is not just the last day in Seattle, this is also the last day of an incredible journey that has taken us in 11 of the 50 US states. After nearly a month in the United States we start to feel even a hint of tiredness that does not allow us to see all the places we would have wanted to visit. We are actually going to the Lake View Cemetery, located on Capitol Hill, just north of Volunteer Park.

Perchè siamo qui? Semplice, perchè è proprio qui che sono sepolti, tra gli altri, Brandon e soprattutto Bruce Lee.

Why are we here? That's easy! Because this is where Brandon and Bruce Lee are buried. 

No, non c'è bisogno che chiediate al custode dove si trovi la loro tomba, perchè anche se il cimitero è vuoto troverete sempre un pellegrinaggio con pochi eguali nei pressi della collinetta dove sono sepolti. Sono le nove del mattino ma nonostante ciò non siamo gli unici a portar loro un saluto.

Well, there is no need to ask the janitor where their grave is. Even if the cemetery is empty you will always find a pilgrimage with few equals in the vicinity of the hill where they are buried. It is nine o'clock in the morning but despite that we are not the only ones to bring them a greeting.

Salutata la leggenda delle arti marziali spostiamo la nostra attenzione verso l'historic district di Seattle. Per coloro i quali invece vorrebbero addentrarsi nella periferia di Seattle consigliamo alcune delle seguenti aree

- U District, zona commerciale e universitaria, situata a 5 chilometri a nord-est rispetto al centro storico. Locali, ristoranti e caffè molto frequentati dagli studenti universitari caratterizzano quest'area decisamente animata

- Washington Park Arboretum, un parco che ospita una foresta di 80 ettari e oltre 5500 specie  di piante. Adatto a chi ama canoa, pesca, nuoto e birdwatching.

- Gas Works Park un parco del tutto particolare, dovuto alla presenza di una fabbrica dismessa che ormai ne è diventata parte integrante.

- Statua di Lenin e del Troll, situati in uno dei quartieri più affascinanti della "emerald city", Fremont.

- Green lake, un parco situato all'interno della zona residenziale, ricco di attrazioni per svolgere attività fisica.

Non dimenticatevi poi che qui la "boeing" è di casa e, qualora aveste tempo, una delle avventure più belle da effettuare a Seattle è quella di visitare il "Museum of Flight". Il bus numero 124 percorre la tratta che va da downtown al museo. All'interno di esso c'è anche l'Air Force One ed è inoltre possibile effettuare simulazioni di volo.

Noi però ci stiamo dirigendo verso il centro storico, ed in particolare Pioneer Square. Qui svettano la Smith tower, fino al 1930 edificio piu grande della west coast, e lo Sky View Observatory, Da qui, come del resto anche dallo Space Needle, è possibile ammirare una splendida vista della città. E a prezzi decisamente più contenuti. Noi decidiamo di visitare solamente il Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, un museo (gratuito) sulla corsa all’oro, Meritevole solo perchè gratuito.

Greeted the martial arts legend, it's now time to leave the cemetery and reach the historic district of Seattle. For those who would rather want to explore other beautiful places we recommend some of the following areas

- U District, the commercial and university area, located 3 miles north-east of the old town. Bars, popular restaurants and cafes are a popular destination for university students in a decidedly animated area

- Washington Park Arboretum, a park that hosts a forest of 80 hectares and over 5500 species of plants. If you love canoeing, fishing, swimming and bird watching this is the place!

- Gas Works Park, a very special park, due to the presence of an abandoned factory that now it has become an integral part of the park.

- Statue of Lenin and the Troll, located in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the "emerald city", Fremont.

- Green lake, a park located within the residential area, full of attractions for physical activity.

Do not forget that Seattle is the home of "Boeing".One of the best adventures in Seattle is to visit the "Museum of Flight". The bus number 124 runs from downtown to the museum. You can admire for example the Air Force One, do a flight simulation and many other things.

Il meglio tuttavia l'abbiamo decisamente tenuto per ultimo. Sono le 18 e stiamo camminando lungo le ripidissime vie del quartiere Queen Anne, da dove si domina letteralmente l'intera Seattle.

Anyway, we've kept the best for the end. It's 6 pm and we're walking along the steep streets of the Queen Anne neighborhood which literally dominates the entire Seattle.

Queen Anne è un quartiere molto carino: grandi edifici si alternano a piccole case di mattoni rossi. Siamo chiaramente in una delle aree più "ricche" della città. Dove stiamo andando? L'indirizzo è il 211 West Highland Drive, ma per tutti è Kerry Park. Il luogo decisamente più magico di tutta Seattle.

Queen Anne is a very nice neighborhood made vy large buildings and  small red brick houses. This is clearly one of the "richest areas" of the city. Where are we going now? The right address is 211 West Highland Drive, but everybody here knows it as Kerry Park. The most magical place od the entire Seattle.

Nonostante la sua bellezza non dovrebbe essere così famoso tra i turisti stando a ciò che abbiamo scovato su internet, motivo per cui, mentre passeggiamo, ci immaginiamo di scattare foto da cartolina in tutta solitudine. Sbagliato. Ci sono moltissime persone ed anche una troupe televisiva, presente per sfruttare la clemenza di Giove Pluvio e godersi lo splendido tramonto. L'ultimo, almeno per noi, di un viaggio davvero indimenticabile.

Despite its beauty this shouldn't be so popular among tourists according to what we found on the internet. This is why, as we walk, we are dreaming about taking postcard pictures all alone. Well, huge mistake. There are many people and even a TV crew. They are all here because this is one of rare sunny days in Seattle and a beautiful sunset is going to come. This is the last, at least for us, of a very memorable trip.
