Provence: the land of... lavender (Day 2)

La splendida colazione a base di baguette, marmellate "home made", croissants e succo d'arancia consumata all'interno del bosco dove è posizionata la nostra "bolla" è la spinta fondamentale per affrontare il secondo, intensissimo, giorno in terra di Provenza. Oggi si entra davvero nel cuore dei territori della lavanda, che attraverseremo da est a ovest sino ad approdare ad Avignone. Lasceremo il Parc Naturel Regional du Verdon e purtroppo ci troviamo anche costretti a dolorosissimi tagli lungo il percorso poiché, come al solito, siamo già in ritardo. E se tutto sommato non ci dispiace più di tanto evitare la cittadina di Valensole, capitale della lavanda, lo stesso non si può dire per la splendida Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, un borgo posizionato proprio sopra il lac de Sainte Croix. Questo villaggio arroccato, attraversato da un ruscello, vi riporterà indietro nel tempo. Passeggiando tra le viette potrete ammirare  le botteghe di "faiences", le maioliche smaltate in voga ai tempi di Luigi XIV e la cappella Notre Dame de Beauvoir. Si raggiungere tramite un sentiero a scalini al termine del quale avrete davanti a voi una splendida vista del Lac de Sainte Croix.

The delicious breakfast made by baguettes, home made jams, croissants and orange juice consumed inside the woods where our "bubble" is positioned is the key push to face the second, intense day in the land of Provence. Today we are really entering into the heart of the Lavender Territories: we'll cross them from east to west till reaching Avignon. Leaving the Parc Naturel Regional du Verdon we are forced to skip two important towns just because we're... late! We don't mind about Valensole, the lavender capital, but skipping the awsome Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, a village located just above the la Sainte Croix, is really a shame. This perched village, crossed by a stream, will bring you back in time. Walking through the viets you can admire the "faiences" workshops, the enamelled tiles famousduring the Louis XIV's time and the Notre Dame de Beauvoir chapel. You can reach the chapel walking along a steep path: in the end there will be a wonderful view of the Lac de Sainte Croix.

Sì, lo sappiamo, vi starete chiedendo come mai non siamo passati da Valensole, la città simbolo della lavanda in Provenza. I racconti dei locali e di qualche altro turista incrociato nelle prime ore in Provenza ci hanno fatto desistere. "Troverete vagonate di asiatici e poca intimità. E per godersi queste bellezze ve ne servirà...". Non ce lo facciamo ripetere due volte, rinunciamo a Valensole e puntiamo dritto verso nord, verso Ferrassieres, incrociando le prime bellissime distese di lavanda, una più bella dell'altra.

Yes, we know that you are wondering why we didn't visit Valensole, the lavender-town symbol in Provence. The tales of locals and some other tourists met the day before in the early hours in convinced us to skip it. "You will find many asians and in general a lot of people, you couldn't enjoy these beauties ...". Ok, perfetc. We go straight to the north, towards Ferrassieres, crossing the beautiful lavender fields.

A Ferrassieres prende definitivamente il via il nostro Tour de Provence, nella cittadina che da qui a due giorni ospiterà la "Festa della Lavanda". Parcheggiamo da "Ho! Bouquet de Lavande", entriamo nello shop e chiediamo indicazioni per il "Lavender Botanic Trail". "Attraversate il paesino, una volta raggiunta la chiesetta con la fontana sarete arrivati al trail, questa è la brochure. Impiegherete almeno un'ora per percorrerlo". Il Lavender Botanic Trail offre un giro ad anello di 3 km con possibilità di ammirare i campi di lavanda in tutta tranquillità.

The tour of Provence finally starts here in Ferrassieres. This is a small town which is going to host the "Lavender Festival" in two days. Following what we've found on the internet we park at "Ho! Bouquet de Lavande" and ask for directions in the shop. "Are you looking for the Lavender Botanic Trail? Well, perfect. Just cross the village, once you reach the little church with the fountain, the trail will start. This is the brochure. You will spend at least an hour in the fields." The Lavender Botanic Trail offers a 3 km ring trail with the opportunity to peacefully admire the lavender fields.

Fortunatamente il trail non è così famoso e, alle 11.30 del mattino, ci siamo sostanzialmente solo noi ed una famiglia intenta a far divertire i propri figli. Sullo sfondo incrociamo per la prima volta l'imponente Mont Ventoux, mentre cartelloni esplicativi raccontano delle varietà di lavanda, della loro coltivazione e della differenza tra lavanda e lavandino.

Fortunately, the trail is not so famous. It's 11.30 am and it's basically just us and a family with their children. The Mont Ventoux is in the background: for the first time we can see one of the most famous mountain in the world while explanatory billboards tell about lavender varieties, their cultivation and the difference between lavender and lavendin.

Ci fermiamo nel piccolo borgo di Sault per pranzare in una baguetterie ed è proprio qui, nella cittadina ai piedi del "monte ventoso" che dovremmo affrontare il secondo trail di giornata. Siamo tuttavia in colpevolissimo ritardo e dobbiamo ancora salire in cima: a malincuore il "The Lavender Road trail", un percorso di 5.3 km situato proprio alle pendici del "Ventoux" (prendere la D164, dopo 700 alla prima curva seguire per "Les Michouilles": dopo 1.3 km avrete raggiunto il trail), dovremo saltarlo.

We stop in the small village of Sault for lunch: we would like to hike the second trail of the day, but time really flies and we've still to go on the top of Mont Ventoux. We have to skip  "The Lavender Road", a 5.3km trail right on the slopes of "Ventoux" (parking: exit Sault, go towards the Mont Ventoux, D164, after 700 meters, at the bend, go straight to "Les Michouilles" and 1,3 km later, at a fork in the road, the parking lot is on  the righ).

A Sault non mancano gli shop dedicati alla lavanda ed agli altri prodotti provenzali. Il più famoso è certamente Maison des Producteurs, una cooperativa che produce lavanda, erbe aromatiche e miele (Rue de la Rèpublique, Sault). I più caratteristici però sono quelli che incrocerete una volta presa la strada che sale sul Mont Ventoux, la  D164. Su tutti il "giardino della lavanda", dove troverete 100 varietà di lavanda (route du Mount Ventoux, Sault), la "Ferme aux Lavande" e la distilleria "aromà plantes", dove oltre ad acquistare prodotti e sorseggiare bevande nel carinissimo bar, sarà possibile anche effettuare visite guidate della distilleria stessa.

In Sault you'll find a lot of lavender and other Provencal products shops. The most famous one is Maison des Producteurs, a cooperative that produces lavender, herbs and honey (Rue de la République, Sault). The most characteristic ones however are those you will encounter once you take the road that rises on the Mont Ventoux, the D164. For example the  "lavender garden", where you will find 100 varieties of lavender (route du Mount Ventoux, Sault), the "Ferme aux Lavande" and the "aroma plantes" distillery, where you can buy local products, and drink beverages in a pretty cool bar. You can also make guided tours of the distillery.

 Intanto il Mont Ventoux comincia ad incuterci timore. Per tre quarti degli oltre 15 km di ascesa il "monte calvo" con i suoi 1909 metri sembra una montagna come tante altre. Negli ultimi km cambia tutto.

Meanwhile, the Mont Ventoux begins to scare us. While driving the road, the "bald mountain" with its 1909 meters looks like a mountain like many others. Everything changes in the last few kilometers.

La vegetazione sparisce e l'osservatorio posto sulla cima un miraggio. Molti ciclisti che la stanno affrontando scendono dalla loro bicicletta quasi in lacrime e concludono la scalata a piedi, con quel poco di energie che è rimasto loro in corpo.

The vegetation disappears and the observatory placed on the top seems to be a mirage. Many cyclists who are approaching the last kilometers come down from their bicycle almost in tears and end up climbing on foot, with the little energy left in their body.

Qui si muore, e si muore per davvero. Sono morti ciclisti professionisti (nel 1967 Tommy Simpson) ed amatori. E c'è una cappella con tantissime foto e dediche a ricordarlo, proprio sotto l'osservatorio.

People die here, for real. Professional cyclists (in 1967 Tommy Simpson) and amateurs died. There is a chapel just under the observatory with lots of pictures of people who have lost their lives.

Il "gigante della Provenza" vi aveva già impressionato tv mentre guardavate il Tour de France? Bene, nulla in confronto della sensazione che proverete in cima.

Did The "giant of Provence" already impressed you while watching the Tour de France? Well, nothing compared to the feeling you will experience on the top.

Il tempo è tiranno e dobbiamo riprendere la marcia. Ancora una volta siamo costretti a "tagliare": è il turno di Cavaillon che proveremo a visitare il giorno successivo e di Coustellet, dove ha sede il museo della lavanda.

Time flies and we've to go. Once again we are forced to "cut": we're forced to skip Cavaillon (we will try to visit it the next day) and Coustellet, where the lavender museum is located.

(Gordes)

Puntiamo invece dritto verso Gordes, dove è situata la splendida Abbaye Notre Dame de Senanque, famosa non tanto per la sua bellezza, ma perchè circondata da campi di lavanda.

It's time to reach Gordes, where the beautiful Abbey Notre Dame de Senanque is located. The abbaye is famous not for its beauty but because it is surrounded by lavender fields.

E' l'unico luogo dell'intera Provenza dove la lavanda fiorisce in primavera e non a cavallo tra giugno e luglio. Probabilmente è questione di fortuna, ma la lavanda c'è. Eccome se c'è. E le foto da cartolina non possono mancare.

It is the only place of the entire Provence where lavender flowers in spring and not between June and July. It's probably a matter of luck, but lavender is there. That's where it is. 

Raggiungiamo la periferia di Avignone intorno alle 18 e, dopo aver effettuato il check in nel modesto B&B Hotel Avignon 2 (53 euro con colazione), raggiungiamo il capoluogo del dipartimento di Vauclouse Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. La città è circondata dall'affascinante muro difensivo, al suo fianco scorre il Rodano.

We reach the Avignon's suburbs around 6 pm and after checking in at the modest B & B Hotel Avignon 2 (53 euros, breakfast included), we head to the capital of the department of Vauclouse Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The city is surrounded by the fascinating defensive wall, along the Rhône River.

Le principali attrazioni della città sono situate all'interno delle mura, a ridosso del centro storico. Su tutte il Palazzo dei Papi di Avignone, la Cattedrale di Notre Dame Des Doms con il bellissimo parco e Place de L'Horloge.

The city's main attractions are located within the walls, close to the Old Town. You can visit the Palace of the Popes, the Cathedral of Notre Dame des Doms with its beautiful park and the Place de L'Horloge.

Appena fuori, lungo il Rodano, potrete ammirare anche il famoso Ponte di St Bénézet che, quando era ancora intero, misurava 900 metri e possedeva 22 arcate. La giostra di cavalli in vecchio stile è uno dei soggetti più fotografati della città.

Just outside the walls, along the Rhône, you can admire the famous St. Bénézet Bridge which, when it was still full, used to measure 900 meters and had 22 arcades. The old-fashioned horse carriage is one of the most photographed subjects in town.

Cosa mangiare ad Avignone? Innanzitutto Avignone è una delle capitali francesi del vino e addirittura all'interno del Palazzo dei Papi potrete trovare una famosissima enoteca specializzata. La città si contende con la vicina Arles il ruolo di capitale gastronomica provenzale ed i piatti principali sono interamente legati al territorio, capace di offrire ortaggi, verdura, legumi e frutta di grandissima qualità.

What should you eat in Avignon? First of all, Avignon is one of the French wine's capitals and even inside the Popes' Palace you will find a very famous wine cellar. The city contends with nearby Arles the role of Provencal gastronomic capital and the main dishes are entirely linked to the territory, capable of offering high quality vegetables, legumes and fruits.

Aglio, olio, ratatouille (stufato di verdure), tian (pomodori e zucchine) e bohemienne (pomodori e melanzane) rappresentano la classica cucina avignonese, anche se i due piatti principali sono il daube avignonnaise (cosciotto di vitello marinato nel vino bianco con erbette locali) e la berlinguette, uova sode con pasticcio di acciughe. Noi tuttavia siamo troppo affamati e finiamo per sbranarci una bistecca accompagnata da un rosso del Mt Ventoux da D'ici Et D'Ailleurs. Nonostante la buona posizione su tripadvisor con il senno di poi avremmo potuto trovare di meglio, anche e soprattutto nel rapporto qualità-prezzo che per noi è sempre un must.

Garlic, oil, ratatouille (vegetable stew), tian (tomatoes and zucchini) and bohemienne (tomatoes and eggplant) represent the classic Avignon cuisine, although the two main dishes are the daube avignonnaise (marinated veal tuna in white wine with local herbs) and the berlinguette, boiled eggs with anchovy. However, we are too hungry and opt for a huge steak accompanied by a red Mt Ventoux wine at D'ici Et D'Ailleurs. Despite the good position on the tripadvisor ranking, we could have found better, especially for value-money.
