2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 21: Napa & Sonoma Valley)

Parlare oggi, gennaio 2018, delle bellezze di una delle aree più affascinanti della Northern California, la Napa & Sonoma Valley, alla luce dei tragici avvenimenti dell'autunno del 2017 (gli incendi che il governatore della California non ha esitato a definire "una delle peggiori catastrofi della storia"), potrebbe sembrare poco delicato, ma lo facciamo perchè sappiamo della grande forza di volontà degli americani che, siamo sicuri, in breve tempo sapranno ridare vita ad uno dei suoi più bei gioielli, che non potrà non entrare anche nei vostri cuori quando la visiterete. Siamo un'oretta abbondante a nord di San Francisco, nella più importante regione vinicola statunitense ed una delle più importanti al mondo, racchiusa in due micro-aree chiamate Napa Valley e Sonoma Valley. La più famosa Napa è più snob, più sofisticata, fatta da grandi proprietà e alberghi eleganti, Sonoma è invece più intima, meno affollata e sicuramente meno cara. Anche se, va detto, qualche giorno nel paradiso del vino (e non solo) potrebbe comunque essere dispendiosa a livello economico.

Speaking today, January 2018, about the beauties of one of the most fascinating areas of Northern California, the Napa & Sonoma Valley, in light of the tragic events happened last autumn (the fires that the governor of California has not hesitated to define "one of the worst catastrophes in history"), it may not seem very subtle, but we do it because we know about the american's great willpower. We are sure they will soon be able to give new life back to one of their most beautiful jewels, which can not wheel into your heart at the time of the visit. We are 70 miles north of San Francisco, in the most important wine region of the United States and one of the most important in the world, enclosed in two micro-areas called Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley. The most famous Napa is more snobbish, more sophisticated, made up of great properties and elegant hotels, while Sonoma is more intimate, less crowded and certainly less expensive. Although, it must be said, a few days in the paradise of wine (and not only) could still be expensive...

Il percorso che vi consigliamo è quello che poi anche noi abbiamo seguito, tralasciando per motivi di tempo solamente l'area a nord di Sonoma, lungo il Russian River, che vi consigliamo se siete in cerca di ancor più intimità rispetto a quella che trovereste a ridosso delle cittadine di Napa e Sonoma. Il punto di partenza che abbiamo scelto è la cittadina di Petaluma.

The route that we recommend is the one that we also followed. We just missed the area north of Sonoma, along the Russian River for lack of time: it's recommended if you are looking for even more intimacy than what you would find as soon as you get close the towns of Napa and Sonoma. The starting point we have chosen is the town of Petaluma.

Il tour enoganostronomico non può che cominciare da nord, dalla cittadina di Calistoga. E non perchè "casa" dell'Old Faithful Geyser of California, che non ha alcunché da spartire con il "vero" Old Faithful di Yellowstone ed oltretutto è carissimo (14.50 dollari), ma perchè da qui comincia una delle più importante vie del vino al mondo, il Silverado Trail. L'avventura nella Napa Valley comincia da qui.

The food and wine itinerary can only begin from the north, from the town of Calistoga.  Not because this is the "home of the Old Faithful Geyser of California", which has nothing to do with the "real" Old Faithful of Yellowstone and moreover it is very expensive (14.50 dollars), but because one of the most important wine routes in the world, the Silverado Trail, starts here. The adventure into the Napa Valley begins here.

Il Silverado Trail è una strada mineraria del diciannovesimo secolo che corre lungo la riva meridionale del Napa River, snodandosi tra le campagne all’ombra di querce secolari, vitigni decisamente pregiati e diverse cantine. E’ stata la prima strada ad avere offerto un collegamento permanente tra Calistoga e Napa, circa 48 km a sud, e segue la stessa direzione della trafficata e meno affascinante Highway 128. Seguire il Silverado Trail non sarà affatto difficile, ma sarete obbligati a dividervi tra la "scenic byway" e la highway 128 poichè alcune delle più belle cantine sono situate lungo la "128" stessa.

The Silverado Trail, trimmed with shady oaks and world-class vineyards, is quintessential Napa Valley. Constructed in 1852 as the first permanent road linking the 30 or so miles between the towns of Napa and Calistoga, the Silverado Trail is the bucolic, parallel counterpart to busier State Highway 128. Following the Silverado Trail will not be difficult at all, but you will be forced to follow also the "128" because some of the most beautiful wineries are located along that road.

Quale cantina visitare in Napa Valley? C'è davvero l'imbarazzo della scelta e, per farlo al meglio, vi occorrerebbe almeno una settimana. Noi abbiamo scelto di non bere durante la giornata e sparare tutte le cartucce in un solo luogo. Di cui poi vi parleremo. Lungo il "Silverado" le più cantine famose per il Cabernet Souvignon e rossi di grande corpo sono la Joseph Phelps, la ZD Wines e la Miner Family Winery, se invece sarete alla ricerca delle "bollicine" potrete fermarvi alla Mumm Napa. Salendo di livello (anche e soprattutto con i costi), resort lussuosi dell'area sono l'Auberge du Soleil e Solage Calistoga ed un ristorante da non mancare (3 stelle michelin) è il The Restaurant at Meadowood.

Which winery to visit in Napa Valley? There are so many to choose from... and you'll need more than a week to visit all of them. We have chosen not to drink during the day get drunk just once, in the evening. Along the "Silverado" the most famous cellars for the Cabernet Souvignon and full-bodied red wines are the Joseph Phelps, the ZD Wines and the Miner Family Winery. If you are looking for sparkling wine, stop at Mumm Napa. At a higher level, don't miss the luxurious resorts of the area like the Auberge du Soleil and Solage Calistoga and a 3 Michelin stars restaurant called "The Restaurant at Meadowood".

La città di Calistoga è il primo approccio con la Napa Valley. S'intuisce subito che la qualità della vita qui è molto alta. La piccola comunità è uno dei luoghi principali per vivere una delle esperienze tipiche che si possono fare in Napa, ovvero un viaggio in mongolfiera. Come al solito, negli Stati Uniti, saranno i costi esorbitanti a riportarvi con i piedi per terra. (dai 230 dollari a persona in su).

The city of Calistoga is the first approach with the Napa Valley. It is immediately obvious that the quality of life here is very high. The small community is one of the main places to experience one of the typical experiences that you can do in Napa, a balloon rip. As usual in the United States, the exorbitant costs put your feet back on the ground. (prices starts from $ 230 per person).

Il sapore d'Italia lo troverete soprattutto al Castello di Amorosa, lungo la highway 128 (St Helena Hwy, Calistoga). Arroccato su un’altura, il castello ha richiesto 13 anni di lavori e nei suoi 11mila metri quadri presenta una grande sala affrescata, passaggi segreti e anche una camera di tortura. Il solo percorrere con la propria auto la strada che dal cancello di entrata porta al castello è affascinante, ma se voleste vengono offerti anche gite in calesse nella tenuta. Il costo della degustazione (5 vini) e visita del castello è 25 dollari.

You will find the taste of Italy at the Castello di Amorosa, along the highway 128 (St Helena Hwy, Calistoga). Perched on a hill, the castle has required 13 years of work and in its 11 thousand square meters has a large frescoed hall, secret passages and even a torture chamber. Just driving with your own car along the road that leads from the entrance gate to the castle is fascinating, but don't forget that carriage tours are also offered on the estate. The cost of the tasting (5 wines) and the tour of the castle is 25 dollars per person.

Proseguendo lungo il Silverado Trail in direzione sud incrocerete St Helena, soprannominata la “Napa Valley’s Main Street”, perchè ricchissima di caffè, negozi e gallerie d'arte. Situati uno in fianco all'altro, meritano una visita la Woodhouse Chocolate (1367 Main St, St Helena) ed Olivier, un negozio dedicato all'olio d'oliva con possibilità di degustazione.

Continuing along the Silverado Trail in a southerly direction, you will cross St Helena, nicknamed the "Napa Valley's Main Street", because it is rich in cafes, shops and art galleries. Located next to each other, the Woodhouse Chocolate (1367 Main St, St Helena) and Olivier, a shop dedicated to olive oil with the possibility of tasting, are worth a visit.

In campo vinicolo alcune delle cantine più visitate sono la Merryvale Vineyards (la prima cantina costruita dopo la fine del Proibizionismo), che organizza tutti i giorni seminari con degustazioni, e la Sattui Winery. Potrete, se volete, acquistare il Passport St. Helena, che vi permetterà di visitare (con degustazione e piccoli assaggi) otto cantine della città.

Some of the most visited wineries are Merryvale Vineyards (the first winery built after the end of Prohibition), which organizes daily seminars with tastings, and the Sattui Winery. You can, if you wish, buy the St. Helena Passport, which will allow you to visit (with tasting and small tastings) eight cellars of St Helena.

La tappa successiva è Yountville, famosa più che per i vini, per la gastronomia. Il motivo? Ha un numero di stelle Michelin pro capite superiore a qualsiasi altro luogo del Nordamerica. Decisivo è il ruolo svolto dallo chef di fama mondiale Thomas Keller che, proprio con il The French Laundry (3 stelle michelin) che rilevò qui nel 1994, fece svoltare la sua carriera. Successivamente lo chef ha poi aperto in città anche il ristorante Bouchon (decisamente più informale) e la Bouchon Bakery, costantemente presa d'assalto da turisti e locali durante tutto il giorno.

The next stop is Yountville, which is famous not just for wines, but also for food. The reason? It has a number of Michelin stars per capita higher than anywhere else in North America. Decisive is the role played by the world-renowned chef Thomas Keller who starts his empire right here in 1994, when he bought The French Laundry (3 Michelin stars). Subsequently, the chef then opened in Yountville one more restaurant (Bouchon) and also a very famous bakery called Bouchon Bakery, constantly harassed by tourists and locals throughout the day.

Il Silverado Trail si conclude nella città di Napa, che dà il nome all'intera area. E' la città più grande e se vogliamo meno caratteristica. L'icona è l'Oxbow Public Market (610 & 644 1st St, Napa), un mercato alimentare in cui potete gustare pesce fresco, prodotti di salumeria artigianale e anche i buonissimi tartufi al cioccolato come ad esempio il “Tart Cherry Cabernet”. Mezz'ora ad est di Napa potreste visitare anche la Jelly Belly Factory (1 Jelly Belly Ln, Fairfield).

The Silverado Trail ends in the city of Napa, which gives its name to the entire area. It is the largest city and probably the less characteristic. The icon is the Oxbow Public Market (610 & 644 1st St, Napa), a food market where you can enjoy fresh seafood, artisan delicatessen products and even the delicious chocolate truffles such as the "Tart Cherry Cabernet". Half an hour east of Napa you could also visit the Jelly Belly Factory (1 Jelly Belly Ln, Fairfield).

Lasciata Napa e svoltando a destra, entrerete nella parallela Sonoma Valley, meno chic probabilmente, ma non per questo meno affascinante. E' ormai parere comune, infatti, che la qualità dei vini della Sonoma Valley abbia raggiunto la stessa qualità dei vini prodotti nella "cugina" Napa Valley. L'area che si estende su 5.666 ettari è nota anche come Valley of the Moon, e viene spesso considerata come il luogo di nascita dell’industria vinicola commerciale della California. Se in Napa percorrerete il Silverado Trail, qui sarà la Valley of the Moon scenic Byway (strada numero 12) ad accompagnarvi da Sonoma a Santa Rosa, in direzione nord. Sonoma è famosa soprattutto per i vigneti di Zinfandel, vini dal retrogusto di ciliegia e mora.

Leaving Napa and turning right, you will enter the parallel Sonoma Valley, less chic, probably, but still fascinating. In fact, it is now common opinion that the quality of the wines of the Sonoma Valley has reached the same quality of the wines produced in the Napa Valley. The area covering 5,666 hectares is also known as Valley of the Moon, and is often regarded as the birthplace of the California commercial wine industry. If you drive along the Silverado Trail in Napa, the Valley of the Moon Scenic Byway (road number 12) will take you from Sonoma to Santa Rosa, heading north. Sonoma is famous above all for the Zinfandel vineyards, wines with a cherry and blackberry aftertaste.

La Buena Vista Winery è probabilmente la cantina più famosa anche perchè la più antica della California (almeno ad alto livello), fondata nel 1857. Una lista delle più importanti cantine comprende la Benziger Family Winery, la Jacuzzi Family Vineyard, la Viansa, la Gundlach-Bundsch, la Cline Cellars, la Kunde Estate Winery. Situate nella  zona del Russian River invece da non mancare sono la Korbel Champagne Cellar, la Healdsburg e la Ferrari-Carano Winery. In estate infine Stryker Sonoma offre una serie di eventi enogastronomici e concerti.

The Buena Vista Winery is probably the most famous winery also because it's the oldest in California (at least at a high level), founded in 1857. A list of the most important wineries includes the Benziger Family Winery, the Jacuzzi Family Vineyard, the Viansa, the Gundlach -Bundsch, the Cline Cellars, the Kunde Estate Winery. The Korbel Champagne Cellar, Healdsburg and Ferrari-Carano Winery shouldn't be missed missed in the Russian River area. In the summer, Stryker Sonoma offers a series of food and wine events and concerts.

A nord di Sonoma, lungo la Valley of The Moon in un'altra zona famosa per l'olio d'oliva, una cittadina invitante è Glen Ellen. Al bar Olive Press, situato in centro città, si può degustare l'olio d'oliva ed è possibile visitare il frantoio in funzione da ottobre ad inizio febbraio. Ma se il nome della città, Glen Ellen, non vi risulterà sconosciuto, è perchè qui ha vissuto uno degli scrittori più famosi del secolo scorso, Jack London. Il Jack London State Historic Park (10 dollari a veicolo) è davvero un must per gli amanti di colui che scrisse tra gli altri anche il Richiamo della Foresta, Zanna Bianca e lo splendido Il Vagabondo delle Stelle.

North of Sonoma, along the Valley of the Moon, in another area famous for olive oil, an inviting town is Glen Ellen. At the Olive Press bar, located in downtown, you can taste the olive oil and visit the mill operating from October to early February. But if the name of the city, Glen Ellen, isn't totally  unknown to you, it is because here lived one of the most famous writers of the last century, Jack London. The Jack London State Historic Park ($ 10 per vehicle) is a must for people who love the writer.

Sonoma è la città che abbiamo preferito. Tutto ruota intorno alla Sonoma Plaza ed è quindi molto semplice da visitare. E poi quel fascino latino che ancora conserva la rende decisamente caratteristica. Originariamente sotto la sovranità messicana, conserva ancora, infatti, tracce del periodo coloniale; nel 1846 la città fu capitale della effimera Repubblica della California.

Sonoma is the city we have preferred the most. Everything is located around Sonoma Plaza and it's therefore very simple to visit it. And then there's a latin charm that the town still preserves which makes it definitely characteristic. Originally under Mexican sovereignty, it still retains traces of the colonial period: the city was once the capital of the ephemeral Republic of California.

Il posto che fa per noi è ovviamente la Sonoma Cheese Factory, dove abbiamo sperimentato tutte le possibili varianti del famoso Sonoma Cheese, ma con la Mission San Francisco Solano State Historic Park e soprattutto con il Sonoma State Historical Park (situati entrambi lungo la piazza), potrete imparare molto sulla storia tormentata di Sonoma.

The place for us is obviously the Sonoma Cheese Factory, where we can taste all the possible variants of the famous Sonoma Cheese. The Mission San Francisco Solano State Historic Park and especially the Sonoma State Historical Park (both located along the square) let you learn a lot about the tormented history of Sonoma.

Il parco è composto da sei siti: la già citata missione San Francisco Solano, la Sonoma Barracks (a volte chiamata Presidio di Sonoma), la Blue Wing Inn, La Casa Grande, Lachryma Montis e l'Hotel Toscano.

The park consists of six sites: the San Francisco Solano mission, the Sonoma Barracks (sometimes called the Sonoma Presidio), the Blue Wing Inn, the Casa Grande, Lachryma Montis and the Tuscan Hotel.

Il parco fu fondato nel 1909 e originariamente conteneva solo la missione San Francisco Solano. Lo Stato della California ha aggiunto nel corso degli anni ulteriori luoghi storici al Parco, molti dei quali associati alla vita di Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, che svolse un ruolo centrale nella secolarizzazione della Missione.

The park was founded in 1909 and originally contained only the San Francisco Solano mission. Over the years, the State of California has added further historical sites to the Park, many of which are associated with the life of Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, who played a central role in the secularization of the Mission.

Ma se abbiamo visitato la Napa e la Sonoma Valley è perchè vogliamo assaggiare uno dei più prestigiosi vini al mondo. Abbiamo e avete imparato ormai che negli Usa tutto quello che non riguarda la natura è decisamente costoso e nei nostri viaggi low cost cerchiamo di spendere soldi solamente dove davvero ne vale la pena. Oggi abbiamo resistito ed il portafogli non l'abbiamo mai sostanzialmente usato. Ma il richiamo del buon vino è forte, fortissimo e così, dopo una lunghissima ricerca, abbiamo deciso che sarebbe stato il Pangloss Cellars di Sonoma il prescelto.

If we visit Napa and Sonoma Valley it's because we want to taste the most prestigious wines in the world. We have and you have learned by now that in the US everything that is not about nature is very expensive and in our low cost travel we try to spend money only where it is really worth it. Today we've been good and now it's really time to spend some money. Where? At the Pangloss Cellars, in Sonoma, the best place for wine lovers.

Semplicemente perchè, non essendo una cantina, era l'unico ad offrire non solo una degustazione di vino (un calice varia dai 10 ai 22 dollari), ma in accompagnamento anche salumi e formaggi, in menù che variavano dai 30 ai 50 euro. Noi abbiamo scelto il menù da 40 euro a persona, che prevedeva 3 vini a testa, un tagliere di salumi ed uno di formaggi. Uno dei camerieri, che per anni ha studiato in Italia, precisamente in una cantina in Toscana, ci racconta in italiano la storia dei vini che assaggiamo, tutti di grande qualità. Dal Chardonnay al Cabernet Sauvignon, dal Pinot Nero allo Zinfandel. 

Pangloss Cellars is not a winery, it means that they offer not only a wine tasting (glass of wine prices: ranging from 10 to 22 dollars), but also deli food and cheese, in menus ranging from 30 to 50 dollars. We chose the 40 dollars (per person) menu, which included 3 wines per person, a cold cuts and different types of cheese. One of the waiters, who studed in Italy for many years, precisely in a winery in Tuscany, tells us in Italian the history of the wines we are tasting: they're amazing. From Chardonnay to Cabernet Sauvignon, from Pinot Nero to Zinfandel.

2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 22: Golden Gate National Recreational Area, Mount Tamalpais State Park, Point Reyes National Seashore)

San Francisco è vicina e di conseguenza anche la conclusione dell'on the road tra Northern California e Oregon è prossimo alla conclusione. La città principe della baia dista solo un centinaio di chilometri da Petaluma, nel cuore della Sonoma County, ma non siamo ancora pronti per raggiungerla. Farlo significherebbe salutare un viaggio straordinario, capace di lasciarci tantissimo, sia a livello di bellezze naturali che umano. Solo la Route 66, percorsa l'estate precedente, può reggere il confronto con l'on the road 2017. San Francisco è lì ad uno schioppo di dita: i 100 km volano via, tra le bellezze della cittadina di Sausalito, famosa per le sue case galleggianti, e San Rafael. La Mission della città, la ventesima della California, fu fondata nel 1817 quando il tenente spagnolo Gabriel Moraga convinse i frati della Missione San Francisco a permettere ai loro neofiti più cagionevoli di salute di trasferirsi in un clima più caldo, quello di San Rafael, che spinse anche George Lucas ad ambientare proprio qui American Graffiti, film del 1973. Se capiterete da queste parti il giovedì, il mercato agricolo lungo fourth street unisce cibi freschi al buon vino, musica dal vivo, abiti vintage, gioielli artigianali e prodotti locali.

We're getting closer to San Francisco and it means that the on the road between Northern California and Oregon nears its end. The main city of the Bay Area in just 70 miles far from Petaluma, in the heart of Sonoma County, but we are not yet ready to reach it. To do so would mean to say goodbye to an extraordinary journey, which has given us many emotions. Only the Route 66, which we traveled in 2016, can be compared with the on the road 2017. San Francisco is calling and the last 70 miles run quickly, among the beauties of the town of Sausalito, famous for its houseboats, and San Rafael. The Mission of the City, the twentieth of California, was founded in 1817 when the Spanish lieutenant Gabriel Moraga convinced the friars of the San Francisco Mission to allow their neo-badest neophytes to move to a warmer climate, that of San Rafael. George Lucas set right here American Graffiti, a 1973 movie. If you happen to be in San Rafael on Thursdays, the farmer market along fourth street combines fresh food with good wine, live music, vintage clothes, craft jewelry and local products.

Tergiversiamo, ma San Francisco ormai è lì, dietro l'angolo. Basterebbe percorrere uno dei ponti più affascinanti al mondo, il Golden Gate Bridge per intravedere il Transamerican Pyramid e tutte le altre bellezze della città sulla baia. Noi, tuttavia, ci fermiamo prima, perchè vogliamo ammirare da tutte le possibili angolazioni il "ponte arancione" che, con i suoi 2.71 km di lunghezza, quando fu ultimato (1937), era il più lungo ponte sospeso del mondo.

We are dragging our feet, but San Francisco is substantially in front of us. It would be enough to cross one of the most fascinating bridges in the world, the Golden Gate Bridge, to catch a glimpse of the Transamerican Pyramid and all the other beauties of the city on the bay. No, we are not ready to come back where we starrted from. We stop before the Golden Gate which is 2.71 km long:it was the longest suspension bridge in the world when completed in 1937. We're looking for different views of the bridge...

Siamo a nord di San Francisco, lungo il Golden Gate National Recreational Area ed i migliori view point sono  “vista Point” (5702 conzelman road, Mill Valley), proprio a ridosso dell’entrata nord del ponte (lo troverete sulla sinistra venendo da nord) ed il Golden Gate Bridge Vista Point (Old Conzelman Rd, Mill Valley, CA - sulla destra).

This is north of San Francisco, along the Golden Gate National Recreational Area. The best view points are "Vista Point" (5702 conzelman road, Mill Valley), just behind the north entrance (you will find it on the left coming from the north ) and the Golden Gate Bridge Vista Point (Old Conzelman Rd, Mill Valley, CA - on the right).

Avrete la possibilità di ammirare il ponte da prospettive diverse e, come sempre al mattino, ci sarà la solita nebbiolina ad accompagnare la vostra spedizione sui promontori a nord di San Francisco.

You will get the chance to admire the beautiful bridge from different perspectives and, as always in the morning, there will be the usual mist to accompany your expedition on the headlands north of San Francisco.

Percorrendo interamente la tortuosa Conzelman Rd avrete a disposizione ancora un paio di view point, tutti splendidi, sullo splendido ponte, sino a giungere alla zona più remota del Golden Gate National Recreation Area, fatta di  antichi forti, basi militari (la quasi totalità del parco fu in passato usato dalla United States Army) trails nella natura ed anche un faro, il Point Bonita Lighthouse (Fort Barry, Building 948, Sausalito).

All along the winding Conzelman Rd you will still have a couple of beautiful viewpoints on the beautiful bridge, until you reach the remotest area of ​​the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, made of ancient forts, military bases (almost all of the park it was formerly used by the United States Army) trails and also a lighthouse, the Point Bonita Lighthouse (Fort Barry, Building 948, Sausalito).

Il trail per il faro è di un miglio e sarebbe anche carino perchè, sulla carta, si dovrebbe anche attraversare un tunnel che conduce proprio al faro. Da qui si gode una bella vista, l'ennesima, sul Golden Gate. Ma. come spesso ci succede, ci siamo dimenticati che non sempre gli orari ed i giorni di lavoro degli americani rispecchiano gli standard europei. Il tunnel che permette l'accesso al faro è, infatti, aperto solamente il sabato, la domenica ed il lunedì. E non siamo neppure lontanamente vicini ad uno di quei tre giorni. E' giovedì...

The trail which leads to the lighthouse is 1 mile long and it should be a nice hike, because there's also a tunnel to cross which connect the beginning of the trail and the lighthouse. From here you can even enjoy a beautiful view on the Golden Gate. But, as often happens to us, we have forgotten that the hours of operation in the United States do not always reflect European standards. The tunnel that allows access to the lighthouse is, in fact, only open on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. And we're not even remotely close to one of those three days. It's thursday. 

L'ultima giornata a stelle e strisce non sembra sorriderci e, la conferma, l'abbiamo qualche minuto dopo, quando risalendo lungo la highway 1 arriviamo al John Muir National Monument, uno dei gioiellini della costa a nord di San Francisco. Il contesto naturale ha fatto sì che, come del resto anche lungo il Point Reyes National Seashore, l'uomo abbia faticato a spingersi. La strada è una sola, i parcheggi pochi e, se siete sfortunati come noi, sarà una mission impossible (o quasi) visitare il parco. Non abbiamo mai visto così tante persone il relazione alle "facilities" messe a disposizione dal National Monument. A malincuore dobbiamo desistere.

The last day does not seem to smile at us and we'll have a confirmation of that just few minutes later, when we stop at the John Muir National Monument, one of the gems on the north coast of San Francisco along the Highway 1. The natural context has meant that, as well as along the Point Reyes National Seashore, man has struggled to push himself up to here. There's just one road and few parking lots: well, if you are unlucky like us, it will be a mission impossible (or almost impossible) to visit the park. We have never seen so many people in a National Monument. We've to give up. 

Ma cosa rende Muir Woods così speciale? E' sostanzialmente l’ultimo baluardo di antiche sequoie costiere mai tagliate della Bay Area, presa letteralmente d’assalto dai boscaioli alla fine del XIX secolo. Dichiarato monumento nazionale nel 1908 dal presidente Theodore Roosevelt, il parco deve il suo nome al celebre naturalista John Muir, che affermò che questo luogo era “il miglior monumento per gli amanti degli alberi che si possa trovare sulla faccia della terra”. L'attrazione di questo National Monument sono i famosi Coast Redwoods (sequoia semprevirens), considerati gli alberi più alti del pianeta. Nel parco ci sono circa 6 miglia di sentieri, il più popolare dei quali è senza dubbio il Main Trail Loop che parte dal Visitor Center (1 miglio) e conduce attraverso la foresta di Muir Woods.
Chi non può o vuole raggiungere il Sequoia National Park o, meglio ancora, i Redwoods a confine con lo stato dell'Oregon, si riversa qui. Tutti i visitatori di San Francisco sono sostanzialmente qui. No, non fa per noi. E comunque il meglio delle Sequoia l'abbiamo già visto...

What makes Muir Woods so special? It is basically the last bulwark of ancient evergreen coast sequoias of the Bay Area, literallyassaulted by the woodsmen in the late nineteenth century. Declared a national monument in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt, the park owes its name to the famous naturalist John Muir, who claimed that this place was "the best monument for lovers of trees that can be found on earth". The attraction of this National Monument are the famous Coast Redwoods (sequoia semprevirens), considered the tallest trees on the planet. In the park there are about 6 miles of trails and the most popular one is undoubtedly the Main Loop Trail which starts from the Visitor Center (1 mile) and leads through the Muir Woods forest. Those who can not or want to reach the Sequoia National Park or, better yet, the Redwoods bordering the state of Oregon, definitely come here. All the San Francisco's visitors are basically here. No, that's not for us. Never mind, we have already seen the best Sequoia ...

Dopo due tentativi andati a vuoto, il terzo non potevamo sbagliarlo. Poco sopra il John Muir National Monument, lungo la splendida Panoramic Highway, c'è un parco statale sconosciuto al turismo di massa che vi consigliamo assolutamente di non perdere. Dovrete raggiungere la east peak del Mount Tam (783 metri sul livello del mare) e, nonostante il Gps da queste parti non vi aiuterà sostanzialmente mai e la segnaletica stradale latita, non avrete grandi problemi a trovarlo.

After two missed attempts, the third could not be wrong. Just above the John Muir National Monument, along the splendid Panoramic Highway, there is a state park (unknown to mass tourism) that we recommend absolutely: it shouldn't be missed. You will have to reach the east peak of Mount Tam (783 meters above sea level) and, despite the GPS in these parts will never help you, you will not have any problems to find it.

Percorrete la Panoramic Highway sino a raggiungere il visitor center, situato proprio nel cuore del parco. Pagate qui la day fee use 8 dollari) e non in cima se non avete il contante esatto con voi. Dopo aver ripreso l'auto, svoltate subito verso destra (se arrivate da sud). Dopo una decina di km buoni in salita avrete raggiunto la cima del Mount Tam.

Just drive the Panoramic Highway till reaching the visitor center, located just in the heart of the state park. You'd better pay the day-fee, 8 dollar, right here at the visitor center: if you decide to pay it at the summit, you must have 8 dollar cash. To get to the east peak just turn right (coming from the south) after the visitor center and drive till top of the Mount Tam East Peak (10 km).

Il trail, bellissimo, è il Verna Dunshee (1.3 km in loop) che regala un’impagabile vista su tutta la baia. Da una parte San Francisco, con la baia, dall'altra la costa a nord e le montagne. Raramente siamo rimasti per così tanto tempo seduti ad ammirare lo sconfinato paesaggio davanti a noi, degno della miglior natura dei grandi parchi del south-west stanutitense.

The beautiful trail is called Verna Dunshee (1.3 km loop trail) that offers a priceless view over the bay. On one side San Francisco, with the bay, on the other side the coast to the north and the mountains. We have rarely been seated for so long to admire the boundless landscape in front of us: it definitely worth the detour.

All'interno del trail stesso, potrete percorrerne un altro, più piccolo e sempre circolare, chiamato Plank Trail, lungo 600 metri. Capirete che il percorso è quello giusto perchè, circa a metà del trail, vi troverete di fronte una piccola stazione meteorologica.

Located within the Verna Dunshee, there's another loop trail, a smallest one, called Plank Trail (0.6 km). You will realize that the route you're hiking is the right one because, in the middle of the trail, there's a small meteorological station.

Seppur non ancora particolarmente famoso, il trail in cima al Mount Tam è da sempre una mecca per chi vuole evadere dal caos delle grandi città della baia, San Francisco ed Oakland su tutte.

Although not yet particularly famous, the trail at the top of Mount Tam has always been a mecca for those who want to escape from the chaos of the big cities of the bay, especially San Francisco and Oakland.

Ripresa la highway 1 per l'ultima volta, circa trenta chilometri vi separeranno da un altro parco altrettanto splendido. Anzi uno "seashore", una lingua di terra che costeggia l'imponente e violento oceano pacifico. Accertatevi di aver fatto scorta di rifornimento nella piccola Olema perchè, una volta entrati nel Point Reyes National Seashore la civiltà lascia spazio alla natura più incontaminata.

Once you get back for the last time to the Highway 1, about thirty kilometers separate you from another equally splendid park. Or better a seashore, a tongue of land that runs along the imposing and violent pacific ocean. Make sure you have stocked up supplies in the small Olema because, once you enter the Point Reyes National Seashore, civilization leaves room for the most unspoiled nature.

Noi ne abbiamo approfittato per visitare Cowgirl Creamery, perchè, si sa, al formaggio non riusciamo proprio a dire di no. Cowgirl Creamery produce ed esporta formaggi artigianali tra cui il Red Hawk ed il Mt Tam) dal 1994, quando due amiche, Peggy Smith e Sue Conley, decisero di unire le loro capacità creando un brand particolarmente famoso nella bay area. Originale il nome, cowgirl, buonissimi i formaggi. Ma tutto sommato era abbastanza scontato vista la conformazione del territorio.

We took the opportunity to visit Cowgirl Creamery, because, as you know, we can not say no to cheese. Cowgirl Creamery produces and exports artisan cheeses (including Red Hawk and Mt Tam) since 1994, when two friends, Peggy Smith and Sue Conley, decided to combine their skills by creating a particularly famous brand in the bay area. The name, cowgirl, is really original, the cheese is delicious. 

Ma è una volta svoltato a sinistra (provenendo sempre da sud), lungo la Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, che il Point Reyes National Seasore offre il meglio di sé. E' il filo conduttore tra la civiltà e la costa selvaggia l'oceano pacifico, distante parecchi chilometri. I paesaggi che affrontiamo sono tanto belli quanto difficili da descrivere. Pascoli e vecchie fattorie e poi le spiagge, enormi ed incontaminate: significherà che avrete raggiunto il punto più a ovest, il Point Reyes.

Once you turn left (always coming from the south), along the Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, the Point Reyes National Seasore starts offering the best of itself. It is the common thread between civilization and the wild coast of the Pacific Ocean, several kilometers away. The landscapes we face are as beautiful as difficult to describe. Pastures and old farms and then the beaches, huge and pristine: it will mean that you have reached the westernmost point, the Point Reyes.

Ecco, il rapporto che abbiamo instaurato negli anni con i lighthouse, i fari, non è proprio idilliaco ed ormai ne siete tutti a conoscenza. Potevamo allora chiudere in bellezza e visitare lo stupendo Point Reyes Lighthouse? No, perchè è chiuso. Ci dobbiamo accontentare, dopo aver percorso tre quarti del trail che conduce al faro stesso, di un comunque bellissimo punto di osservazione. Dopo tutto non ci è andata malissimo.

Well, the relationship that we have established over the years with the lighthouse is not really idyllic and now you are all aware of it. Could we then close up visiting the beautiful Point Reyes Lighthouse? No, we don't, because it is closed. After having walked three quarters of the trail that leads to the lighthouse, we have to settle for a still beautiful observation point. After all, it did not go very badly.

Chi invece non ci delude mai sono i trail. Stupendo è quello che abbiamo percorso, il Chimney Rock (1.7 miglia a/r), lungo Chimney rock rd (chiusa da dicembre a marzo). Uno dei tanti percorsi che potrete scegliere all'interno del parco dove sarete a stretto contatto con la natura. In un'ora e mezza abbiamo incrociato una sola persona. John Muir National Monument è già un ricordo lontanissimo...

On the contrary, trails never disappoint us. The Chimney Rock (1.7 miles outback trail), along Chimney rock rd (closed from December to March) is simply one of the coolest trail on the coast. That's one of the many trails that you can hike in a park where you'll always will be in close contact with nature. In an hour and a half we've met just one person. John Muir National Monument is already a distant memory ...

Il Chimney rock trail permette di raggiungere la punta più a sud della penisola del Point Reyes National Seashore. E' il percorso perfetto se si vuole ammirare cetacei in migrazione, cervi che pascolano a ridosso di un burrone o semplicemente leoni marini che "si abbronzano" a riva. Uno dei più bei trail dell'on the road 2017, sicuramente il più suggestivo in termini di contatto con la natura.

The Chimney rock trail allows you to reach the southernmost point of the Point Reyes National Seashore peninsula. It is the perfect trail if you want to admire migrating cetaceans, deer that graze close to a ravine or simply sea lions that lies on the shore. One of the most beautiful trails of the on the road 2017, certainly the most impressive in terms of contact with nature.

Il parco è enorme e realizziamo solo ora che la bellezza del territorio avrebbe meritato almeno una giornata, non soltanto qualche oretta nel tardo pomeriggio. Non riusciamo a visitare l'intera parte a nord, lungo la Pierce Road, dove si concentrano la maggior parte di "elk" che risiede a Point Reyes. Percorrendola interamente raggiungerete il Pierce Point Ranch, la fattoria casearia-lattiero più vecchia della California (1858).

The park is huge and we immediately realize that the beauties of the territory would have deserved at least a day, not just a few hours in the late afternoon. We are not able to visit the entire area located in the northern part of the National Seashore, along the Pierce Road, where there are many elks and also a ranch, the Pierce Point Ranch, the oldest dairy farm in California (1858).

Le lancette dell'orologio scorrono troppo velocemente ed il tempo sta davvero per finire. Dobbiamo rinunciare a malincuore anche alle tre spiagge più famose del seashore (South Beach, North Beach e Kehoe Beach), ma riusciamo tuttavia a fermarci al sin troppo pubblicizzato Cypress Tree Tunnel, un tunnel formato da alberi di cipressi, per l'ultima istantanea dell'on the road 2017.

The clock's hands run too fast and time is really running out. We must reluctantly skip the three most famous beaches of the seashore (South Beach, North Beach and Kehoe Beach), but can't really miss the Cypress Tree Tunnel for the last snapshot of the on the road 2017.

E non possiamo non concludere con quella che è la canzone simbolo di ogni "on the road" che tocchi il Golden State: "California" dei Phantom Planet. E' vero, è decisamente inflazionata, ma la sentiamo davvero nostra. L'abbiamo ascoltata per sbaglio, alla radio, mentre viaggiavamo a vele spiegate proprio dall'Oregon verso la California. Ed abbiamo capito che, sì, nella canzone era descritto ciò che stavamo facendo noi. Percorrere tutta la 101, dal profondo nord dell'Oregon, alla ricerca della "highway 1", per tornare proprio dove tutto ebbe inizio, San Francisco. Right back where we started from...

Well, we can not end the tale with the song that symbolizes every "on the road" in the "Golden State": "California" by Phantom Planet. It's true, it's definitely inflated, but we really feel it. We listened to it by mistake, on the radio, while we were traveling under full sail from Oregon to California. And we realized that... yes, that's what we are doing, the song is describing our journey! Driving down the 101, from the deep north of Oregon, looking for the "highway 1", right back to where it all began, San Francisco. Right back where we started from ...
