2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 4: Kilauea & Hanalei)

Non fatevi spaventare dalle previsioni meteo, spesso e volentieri poco incoraggianti. E' vero che a Kauai piove spesso, ma quasi mai per lungo tempo durante la giornata. Si tratta si piccoli temporali tropicali che poi regalano alcuni degli arcobaleni più belli al mondo. E la nostra giornata comincia proprio così, poco dopo l'alba, con l'incredibile arcobaleno che ci avvolge mentre ci spostiamo di qualche centinaio di metri dal nostro hotel, diretti verso il belvedere dal quale ammirare l'Alekoko Fishpond, una delle più belle peschiere delle antiche Hawaii, situato appena sopra il Nawiliwili Harbor. I muri di contenimento della peschiera, destinata all'allevamento dei cefali, misurano ben 274 metri. Qui tutti la conoscono come Menehune Fishpond: la leggenda, infatti, racconta che fu innalzata dai folletti Menehune in una sola notte. L'intera area nel 1973 fu inserita nel Huleia National Wildlife Refuge ed è ora "casa" di molte specie di uccelli acquatici.

Don't let the weather forecast scares you, even if sometimes they're not so good. It's true that it often rains often in Kauai, but almost never for a long time during the day. These are small tropical storms that then offer some of the most beautiful rainbows in the world. Well, our day starts just like this, shortly after sunrise, with the incredible rainbow that surrounds us as we move a few miles from our hotel, heading to the Alekoko Fishpond viewpoint. That's one of the most beautiful fishpond of ancient Hawaii, located just above the Nawiliwili Harbor . The retaining walls of the fishpond, destined for mullet farm, measure 274 meters. Alekoko ( also called Menuhune Fish Pond)  got it’s name from the legend that a small race of people known as Menehune built these ponds 1,000 years ago. The ponds which create a dam across a portion of the Huleia River was used to trap fish to feed the ali’i ( Hawaiian royalty). Large stones were used to create walls 900 feet across and five feet high. Legend says the ponds were completed overnight. The area was designated as the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge in 1973 and now is a protected and beautiful home to many endemic water birds. The rocks are now covered in mangroves and moss.

Noi siamo diretti a nord, dove effettueremo la seconda ed ultima escursione (a pagamento, 120 dollari a persona - pranzo incluso: durata 4 ore) nel "verde" di Kauai. Stiamo per vivere un'esperienza possibile solamente in quest'isola, il "Mountain Tubing", ovvero lanciarsi per torrenti e rapidi di montagna su un enorme ciambellone tra vedute spettacolari ed una storia affascinante, quella del sistema di tunnel e gole di Lihue per la coltivazione dello zucchero, costruito a mano da emigrati cinesi a metà del 1800.

We are heading north, for the second tour (120 dollars per person, lunch included - duration: 4 hours) of the trip. E' la Kauai Backcountry Adventures (2-3131 Kuhio Hwy, Hanamaulu) che effettua questo tipo di escursioni che necessitano di una buona oretta spesa su un 4x4 all'interno dell'antica piantagione da zucchero Lihue ad Hanamaulu. Tutta l'area, nascosta all'interno della Backcountry, è proprietà privata e raggiungibile solo tramite un tour organizzato. Purtroppo, l'acquisto delle foto scattate direttamente dalle guide non è decisamente economico (20 dollari ciascuna, molto meglio fare come noi e "rubacchiarle" dal sito internet della compagnia) ma  l'esperienza nella natura incontaminata color verde smeraldo non ci ha lasciato indifferenti. You'll be taken into the ancient Lihue Sugar Plantation in Hanamaulu, now privately owned and accessible only through an organized tour. Unfortunately, purchasing photos taken straight by the guides is not very cheap ($ 20 each - we "stole" two of them from their website) but experience in this unspoiled emerald green nature will be one of the highlights of your trip to Kauai. Si viaggia all'interno di una serie di canal, tra grotte ed anche cinque tunnel naturali. Il tour è adatto a grandi e piccini. Siamo i primi ad ammettere che 120 dollari siano troppi, ma lo ribadiamo ancora una volta, l'entertainment negli Stati Uniti si paga profumatamente...

The Mountain Tubing Adventure is perfect for all those age 5 and over. This ditch and tunnel system that once irrigated vast sugar crops runs through some of the most beautiful and remote land on the island. You'll encounter even five natural tunnels. Well, 120 dollars per person may be too expensive, but you already know that entertainment in Usa is not inexpensive.

Risalendo la Kuhio HWY (56) in direzione nord, incrociamo uno dei fari più belli delle intere Hawaii, anzi il più bello. Il Kilauea Point Lighthouse, situato all'interno del Kilauea Point National Wildlife refuge, vanta la più grande lente di Fresnel al mondo, capace di illuminare l'oceano fino a 144 metri di distanza dalla costa. La torre bianca, alta 16 metri, sorge invece su una scogliera di 65 metri che domina l'intera riserva naturale, casa di alcuni uccelli come il fregate di mare ed il nene, uccello simbolo delle Hawaii. Purtroppo gli orari per le visite al faro (dal martedì al sabato, dalle 10 del mattino alle 4 del pomeriggio) sono del tutto particolari e ciò ci ha colto impreparati. Oggi è domenica, niente faro!

Traveling along the Kuhio HWY (56), we encounter the most beautiful lighthouse in the entire Hawaii. The Kilauea Point Lighthouse, located within the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, The crowning jewel of the Kilauea Point Lighthouse is the Fresnel lens, a complex array of lens and prisms which focused the light into a powerful beam, reaching 22 miles at sea. Today, visitors can see this remarkable lens assembly on the tours conducted twice a week. The original light source was a kerosene lantern providing 250,000 candlepower, eventually replaced by a quartz iodine lamp putting out 2,500,000 candlepower. The white tower, 16 meters high, stands on a 65-meter cliff overlooking the entire nature reserve (Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge) Unfortunately today it's Sunday and the lighthouse is not open to the public. The Kilauea Lighthouse Visitor Center is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 am to 4 pm. 

L'Hanalei Bridge, il piccolo ponte costruito nel 1912 e portato poi alle hawaii, è il cancello d'ingresso nell'area più remota dell'isola. Ma probabilmente anche la più affascinante. Il motivo? I pulman turistici non riescono ad attraversare il ponte e tutta l'area che si spinge fino alla Napali Coast è rimasta selvaggia, eccezion fatta per i tre carinissimi villaggi: Hanalei, il più grande, Haena e Wainiha.  L'ultimo grande resort, il The St Regis Princeville Resort, lo troverete sulla costa poco prima del ponte. Princeville è la città sicuramente più turistica, tra campi da golf ed un lusso che pare quasi stonare con la bellezza naturale dell'isola di Kauai. Noi però siamo qui per un altro motivo: parcheggiamo a ridosso del Makai Golf Course e percorriamo un buon chilometro tra case onestamente una più bella dell'altra. In un angolo sperduto tra la costa dovremmo trovare le queen's bath, uno dei luoghi più controversi (tra i tanti) dell'isola.

The Hanalei Bridge, the small bridge built in 1912 and later brought to Hawaii, is the gateway to the most remote (and fascinating) area of the island. Why is this area so beautiful? The tourist bus can not cross the bridge, and the whole area that leades to Napali Coast has remained wild, except for the three beautiful villages: Hanalei, the largest one, Haena and Wainiha. The last great resort, The St Regis Princeville Resort, is located just before the bridge, in Princeville. Princeville is definitely the most touristy city: you'll finde golf courses and beautiful houses. Anyway, we're in Princeville for another reason: we leave the car at the Makai Golf Course parking lot and walk for a good mile in a beautiful residential area. We're looking for the Queen's Bath, located in a corner out of the coast. This is one of the most controversial places on the island.

Il trail (0.6 miglia) è tutto sommato abbastanza semplice (seppur illegale e non segnalato su guide e cartelli) e conduce a delle splendide "pool" naturali tra rocce di lava nera. E' il paradiso degli spericolati, che si tuffano dalle scogliere in queste acque color turchese.

Queen's Bath Trail is a 0.6 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail that features a waterfall. The trail is rated as moderate and leads to amazing natural pools along volcanic cliffs. The swimming area is accessible via a short trail.  In small surfusually in summer the water in the pool is calm and makes a great place to chill

Per i meno coraggiosi come noi n'è un'altra poco più avanti, interamente protetta dalle rocce, nel quale poter fare il bagno. Ci fa visita anche un piccolo squalo bianco in questo contesto naturale con pochissimi eguali (vedi il nostro video youtube nel link alla fine del post), dove l'unico rischio è quello di scivolare sulle rocce scivolose. Chiaramente, soprattutto in inverno, le acque dell'oceano sanno anche essere violentissime e sono sempre di più i casi di infortuni ed annegamenti in queste acque (http://great-hikes.com/blog/queens-bath-incidents/). La prudenza qui non è mai troppa...

For the less brave as we are, there's a tide pool completely protected from the rocks little further ahead, where we can swim. We also notice a white shark in this amazing natural place (watch our video on youtube linked below), where the only risk is to slip on those slippery lava rocks.  The swimming area is accessible via a short trail. Questa volta l'Hanalei bridge lo superiamo, perchè il nostro prossimo obiettivo è la città di Hanalei, una delle più affascinanti dell'isola. Un villaggio più che una città, tra montagne verdissime e negozietti alcuni dei quali molto particolari. Come quelli del Ching Young Village, aperto da una coppia di immigrati cinesi nel 1896 e gestito ora dai discendenti. E poi, non possiamo non assaggiar finalmente uno shave ice, la mitica "granita" hawaiana. Se invece amate la storia ed in particolare quella di Kauai, la Waioli Mission House sarà invece un luogo da non perdere.

This time we cross the Hanalei Bridge, because our next goal is the town of Hanalei, one of the most fascinating of the island. This is a small village, located between green mountains and the ocean. The most famous attraction the Waioli Mission House for a step back into Kauai's history. Another famous place is "Ching Young Village", a shopping center opened by a couple of Chinese immigrants in 1896 and now run by descendants. Well, we can finally taste a shave ice, the mythical Hawaiian shave ice!

Avremmo potuto farlo da Kong Lung, a ridosso di Princeville, un chiosco che appare anche nel film "6 giorni e 7 notti" con Harrison Ford, ma è un altro piccolo negozietto posto proprio di fronte al piccolo centro commerciale Ching Young ad ispirarci maggiormente ("Shave Ice Paradise"). Ora finalmente capiamo il perchè lo Shave Ice qui sia una sorta di religione. Perchè è buonissimo. E enorme!

We could have taste it at Kong Lung, close to Princeville, which also appears in the movie "6 days and 7 nights" with Harrison Ford, but it's another small shop right in front of the small shopping center "Ching Young" which inspires us the most. It's name is"Shave Ice Paradise". We can finally realize why the Shave Ice here is a sort of religion. Because it's delicious. And it's also huge! 

Sulla via del rientro ci fermiamo una mezz'oretta in una delle spiagge più carine di questa parte dell'isola, Anini Beach, situata non lontano dal Queen's Bath in direzione sud. Per gli amanti delle spiagge, le cinque migliori dell'isola dovrebbero essere: a sud Poipu Beach, di cui abbiamo parlato nel "day 2-3", a nord Anini Beach, Secret Beach, Hanalei Beach e Haena Beach Park.

On the way back we stop in one of the finest beaches on this part of the island, Anini Beach, located not far from Queen's Bath. If you're a beach lover, those should be the best five beaches in the island. We already mentioned Poipu Beach (southshore) and Anini Beach, but don't forget to visit also Secret Beach, Hanalei Beach and Haena Beach Park.
