The Love for Hawaii was born in Maui and Oahu in 2016. It's difficult to explain, with words and images, all the love we feel for this amazing american state. If the aloha spirit takes possession of your body and your mind, it won't leave you alone anymore. That's s basically what happened to us as we landed for the first time in the 50th American state for the first time. Well, that's because if you experience Hawaii in the right way, no places can be compared to this paradise. Someone will surely turn his nose, because there aren't paradisiacal beaches, extra-luxurious five-star resorts and happy hour cocktails in our picture. This is all true. Hawaii and the aloha spirit we have already talked about, is a lot more: if you'are looking for a caribbean sea or luxurious resorts, you could be disappointed. We're at the Oakland International Airport breathing the aloha spirit at the Hawaiian Airlines desk waiting for our flight (5 hours flight) to Kauai, the third Hawaiian island we will visit. Why Kauai and not Big Island after visiting Maui and Oahu? As always, we picked this place according to our feeling. And fortunately we did not go wrong. The garden island, the greenest and most rainy among all the Hawaiian islands, has proved to be by far the most beautiful among those visited. We still miss Big Island and Molokai, but "never say never" ...
Non appena atterrati capiamo subito che "qui è diverso". Mancano le grandi infrastrutture di Oahu, mancano i resort di un certo livello di Maui: il nostro motel, comunque ottimo, è poco fuori Lihue ed è a ridosso della zona portuale non turistica. Siamo noi ed il verde. Qui tutto è verde. Il grande vantaggio del Kauai Inn è la posizione strategica: da qui si raggiungono in poco più di un'ora le due estremità dell'isola delimitate dalla Na Pali Coast. E' vicina anche la spiaggia di Poipu Beach, una delle migliori dell'isola (nulla di clamoroso, ma a noi importa poco), che raggiungiamo nel tardo pomeriggio dopo aver depositato i bagagli al motel ed effettuato una veloce sosta in uno degli shop storici di kaui, Hilo Hattie. Purtroppo però il "famosissimo" burro d'arachidi hawaiano che tanto ci ha fatto innamorare non c'è...
As soon as we land, we immediately realize that "there's soemthing different here" There aren't the Oahu's major facilities, there aren't the Maui's huge resorts: our great motel is just outside of Lihue and close to the non-tourist harbor area in a green area. Well, everything is green in this island. The great advantage of the Kauai Inn is the strategic location: from here you can reach the two extremities of the island bordered by Na Pali Coast in just one hour. The beach at Poipu Beach, one of the best on the island (nothing fancy, but we do not care much about it) is also very close to the motel: we're going there, but first a quick stop at one of the historic shops in Kaui, Hilo Hattie. Unfortunately, however, they don't sell the "famous" Hawaiian peanut butter .
Poco male, se non c'è da mangiare... c'è sempre qualcosa da bere. In attesa della giornata successiva, in cui inizieremo ad esplorare l'isola, facciamo sosta alla Kilohana Plantation a Lihue. No, non vogliamo visitare le piantagioni anche se il tragitto in trenino è sempre invitante, siamo qui per il "rum tasting", disponibile gratuitamente (lasciare la mancia però è più che una cortesia), ogni giorno presso il Koloa Rum -Tasting Rum (3-2087 Kaumualii Hwy, Lihue) all'interno della piantagione.
Well, never mind. If there is no food ... there is always something to drink. Waiting for the next day, when we will start exploring the island, we stop at Kilohana Plantation in Lihue. No, It's not time to visit the plantations even though the train ride should be a great adventure, we are here for the "rum tasting", available for free (leave the tip is more than a courtesy), every day at the Koloa Rum -Tasting Rum (3-2087 Kaumualii Hwy, Lihue) within the plantation.
La Koloa Rum è una delle più grandi compagnie di Rum, grazie alle prime tribu di Polinesiani che nella loro migrazione portarono le canne da zucchero sulle isole hawaiane. Non sono ammesse prenotazioni online, l'unico modo è entrare nello shop (dove è possibile acquistare i loro prodotti) e firmare con il proprio nome una sorta di diario, selezionando l'orario preferito. Nel "tasting" vengono offerti diversi rum ed un piccolo dolcino "homemade", il tutto condito dalla spiegazione di ogni singolo bicchiere e, ovviamente, dalla storia della compagnia. La qualità dei rum ci è sembrata molto, molto alta. Dovessero esportare in Italia un giorno non ci lasceremo scappare l'occasione.
The Koloa Rum is one of Rum's mayor companies. That's because Kauai is the natural home for the Koloa Rum Company. Sugar cane came to Hawaii by ancient Polynesian voyagers in their migration from the South Pacific. No online bookings are allowed, the only way is to get into the shop (where you can buy their products) and sign a sort of diary with your name and select your favorite time. In the "tasting room" you will taste different rums and a small "homemade" sweetness while listening all the explanations about each single glass and, of course, about the company's history. The quality of rum is very, very high.
La mattina successiva raggiungiamo di buon'ora quello che per noi è il centro dell'isola, la zona di Wailua, ma che per gli abitanti è la Coconut Coast, dove a svettare sono le montagne (su tutte il Waialeale), le palme da cocco ed il solito incredibile verde. Qui arrivò anche Elvis Presley per le riprese nel 1961 di Blue Hawaii. Il nostro viaggio a Kauai comincia dal Wailua River e dalla prima delle due escursioni che abbiamo scelto (tra le tante) di effettuare, complice il solito costo sempre eccessivo dell'entertainment americano ed in particolare hawaiano. Stiamo per spendere la mattinata lungo il Wailua River. Con un Kayak raggiungeremo l'interno dell'isola e da lì, con la guida, effettueremo il trail che condurrà alle Secret Falls.
The next morning we reach what we just call the "center of the island", the Wailua area, best known as the Coconut Coast, where mountains (the highest one is the Waialeale mountain),
coconut palm trees and the usual "green" are the main attractions. Elvis Presley also came here in 1961 while filming Blue Hawaii. Our trip to Kauai begins at the Wailua River with the first of the two excursions we have chosen to do. Why only two? Just because american entertainment is too expensive. And Hawaiaan entertainment is even more expensive. We're about to spend the morning down the Wailua River, reaching the inside of the island by kayak. The last part of the excursion will be a 2 miles trail to the "secret falls".
Non avendo mai fatto Kayak abbiamo scelto di effettuare un tour organizzato (Kayak Wailua, 53 dollari a persona), ma sono tante le compagnie che noleggiano Kayak a ridosso del Wailua River nel caso voleste optare per il "fai da te". E raggiungere il trail con annessa cascata da soli non è sicuramente una "mission impossible".
We've never done kayak before, so we opt for an organized tour (Kayak Wailua, 53 dollars per person) but there are so many companies that rent Kayak near Wailua River. Well, then hiking the trail that leads to the waterfal is definitely not a "mission impossible".
Il trail è molto bello e non lungo (2 miglia a/r) ed è l'unico modo per raggiungere le splendide cascate, le secret falls, poste alla fine del percorso. Anche se, come ci ha confessato la guida, non sono più così tanto "secret" come un tempo anche se ancora raggiungibili solamente via fiume e poi camminando. Noterete diverse imbarcazioni affollate di turisti che percorreranno parte del fiume con voi e poi vireranno verso sinistra. Sono diretti a Fern Grotto, una delle tante possibili escursioni lungo il Wailua River.The trail is very beautiful and not so long (2 miles a / r). That's the only way to reach the beautiful falls, located at the end of the trail. Although they are not as "secret" as they once were. You will notice several crowded boats sharing the r iver with you and your kayak: they are all going to Fern Grotto: this is one of the many possible excursions along the Wailua River.
Scoprirete in brevissimo tempo che, scegliendo con oculatezza, il cibo alle hawaii sarà l'ultimo dei problemi. Il mix di culture presenti nello stato vi permetterà di assaggiare diverse specialità, hawaiane e non. E quando i ristoranti o i food truck non saranno di vostro gradimento, c'è sempre il "mitico" Safeway (una delle più grandi catene di supermercati) ad arrivare in vostro soccorso. Noi, nonostante avessimo nella nostra lista una quindicina di luoghi in cui pranzare/cenare, ascoltiamo la guida e ci fermiamo da Tiki Tacos, non distante dal Wailua River. Locale rustico e niente servizio, ma cibo messicano autentico. Promosso.
You will find out very soon that food will be the last of the problems in Hawaii. The mix of cultures in the state will allow you to taste different hawaiaan (and not hawaiaan) specialties. When you want to skip restaurants or food trucks, there is always the "mythical" Safeway (one of the largest supermarket chains) ready to help you. Even though we had about fifteen places to eat / dine on our bucket list, we decide to stop by Tiki Tacos, not far from the Wailua River, That's a guide tour tip. Rustic place and no service, but authentic Mexican food.
Imboccata la 583, risaliamo lungo la "back-country", il cuore dell'isola. Una leggerissima svolta a destra ci porta ad una strada senza uscita. Siamo lungo la Maalo Rd (Maalo Rd, off Hwy 580, Lihue) e quelle che vediamo sotto di noi in lontananza sono le Wailua Falls, uno degli spettacoli più belli che l'isola di Kauai può offrire. Il parcheggio è piccolo, ma troviamo comunque posto. E capiamo immediatamente che la scritta "sosta massima: 20 minuti" a caratteri cubitali posta davanti al "parking lot" sia un deterrente per tutti quei turisti e non che vogliano scendere a valle per ammirare le falls. Il trail, seppur brevissimo (0.3 miglia), è illegale.
Take the 583, and drive along the "back-country", the heart of the island. A slight turn to the right will take you to a "no outlet" road. That's where we are, along Maalo Rd (off Hwy 580, Lihue) and below us there's an amzing fall, called Wailua Falls, one of the best spectacles that Kauai Island can offer. Parking lot is small, but we find a spot and immediately realize that the sign "maximum stop: 20 minutes" placed in front of the "parking lot" is a deterrent for all those who want to go hike the trail to the falls. Why? The Wailua Falls Trail (0.3 miles) is illegal.
E' la prima volta che ci troviamo ad affrontare un percorso, seppur suggestivo, molto insidioso. tra arrampicate con la corda e molto altro. No, il trail che porta alle Wailua Falls non è semplicissimo. Ma se ce l'ha fatta Marco, noto fifone, vuol dire che è "fattibile". L'Ale ovviamente non fa testo. Lei è già ai piedi delle cascate. Sono imponenti, molto suggestive. Questa volta però il bagno non lo facciamo. L'adrenalina nel percorrere il trail è ancora in circolo (in Marco, ovviamente) e ci accontentiamo di ammirarle da una posizione comunque privilegiata.
That is the first time that we are facing a suggestive but very insidious trail which runs between rope climbing and much more. Well, the trail that leads to Wailua Falls is definitely not easy. Anyway, Marco actually did it. It means that almost everybody can do this! Where is Ale? She is already at the foot of the falls, she's never afraid... The falls are impressive, very impressive. This time however, we do not take a bath. The adrenaline is still circling (in Marco, of course) and we are happy to admire them from a privileged position.
Per le ultime tappe di giornata torniamo verso il sud dell'isola, lungo la costa di Poipu. Percorriamo il panoramico "Maluhia tree tunnel road" (State Highway 520, Kalaheo), con gli alberi di eucalipto a fare da sfondo, e raggiungiamo lo Spouting Horn, un condotto lavico che soffia in aria getti d'acqua di mare che possono raggiungere anche i 15 metri di altezza. Il tramonto si avvicina ed è il momento migliore per ammirarne il getto, che assume i colori dell'arcobaleno (South Shore, Poipu).
Sunset is coming and there's still many places to visit. We're driving towards Poipu Coast, through the scenic "Maluhia Tree Tunnel Road" (State HIghway 520, Kalaheo) with the beautiful eucalyptus trees till reaching the Spouting Horn, one of the most photographed spots on Kauai. The Poipu surf channels into a natural lava tube here and releases a huge spout of water that can reach as high as 50 feet into the air. Sunset is definitely the best time to admire the blowhole because it takes the colors of the rainbow (South Shore, Poipu).
For those who love hiking, there's a nice 3.4 miles trail not far from the Spouting Horn, called "maha'ulepu heritage trail" which runs along the Poipu coast and, above all, offers beautiful colors at sunset. The shortest route starts at Shipwreck Beach and gets to Maka-wehi point.
