2 NATURAL WONDERFUL PLACES NOT TO BE MISSED IN VENETO - BRENT DE L'ART CANYON AND CAGLIERON CAVES

Il Veneto è ricco di bellezze naturali, più o meno famose. Ma è nei territori dell'Alta Marca Trevigiana, dove si produce il prosecco più buono al mondo, che dà il suo meglio. Siamo a nord di Valdobbiadene, a ridosso della "Strada del Prosecco" (il percorso automobilistico circolare che vi farà scoprire il vino prodotto in queste terre) e stiamo scalando, provenendo da sud, il passo San Boldo sino a raggiungere il piccolo comune di Sant'Antonio Tortal, nel cuore della Valbelluna, alle pendici delle Dolomiti e a pochi km dall'ingresso del Parco Nazionale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi. Siamo alla ricerca del Brent de l'Art, un autentico gioiellino semisconosciuto e volutamente custodito gelosamente dagli abitanti del luogo.

Veneto is rich in natural beauties, more or less famous. But it is in the territories of the Alta Marca Trevigiana, where the best prosecco in the world is produced, where the region gives its best. We are north of the town of Valdobbiadene, near the "Strada del Prosecco" (the loop route that will make you discover the wine produced in these lands). Coming from the south, we face the San Boldo pass and then the small town of Sant 'Antonio Tortal, in the heart of Valbelluna, on the slopes of the Dolomites (a few miles far from the entrance to the Belluno Dolomites National Park). We are looking for the Brent de l'Art, a real little-known gem and deliberately guarded jealously by the locals.

Non ci sono indicazioni per raggiungere il piccolo canyon ed anche quello che una volta era il parcheggio più prossimo al Brent è ora chiuso (ci saranno i cartelli a ricordarvelo), così come quello del vicino centro sportivo. Lasciamo l'auto nel cuore del paese (a ridosso della posta e della trattoria Alla Posta) e seguiamo la strada che conduce verso ovest sino al centro sportivo e, successivamente, su una sterrata che conduce all'inizio del sentiero del Brent De l'Art.

There are no signs to reach the small canyon and also what was once the closest parking to the Brent is now closed, as well as that of the nearby sports center. We leave the car in downtown (close to the post office and the "trattoria Alla Posta" ) and then follow the road that leads west to the sports center and, subsequently, on a dirt road leading to the Brent De l 'Art trail.

Partendo dal paese potrete consultare lungo il percorso diversi pannelli che illustrano la flora, la fauna ed ovviamente anche i fenomeni geologici riguardanti la zona. Impiegherete una ventina di minuti a raggiungere l'inizio del sentiero, altri quindici per raggiungere il canyon.

Starting from downtown Sant'Antonio Tortal, you can consult along the trail different panels that illustrate the flora, the fauna and of course also the geological phenomena concerning the area. It takes about twenty minutes to reach the beginning of the Brent de L'Art trail, another fifteen minutes to reach the canyon.

Non esageriamo, uno dei luoghi da non perdere nella provincia di Belluno è lo splendido Brent de l'Art, raggiungibile con un semplice percorso in discesa dapprima attraverso un prato erboso, e poi un bosco dove lo sfondo sarà il rumore dell'acqua che sentirete in lontananza. Al ritorno, con la strada in salita, impiegherete qualche minuto in più per tornare alla vostra auto.

We're telling the truth, one of the places not to be missed in the province of Belluno is the wonderful Brent de l'Art, reachable with a simple downhill trail which runs first through a grassy lawn, and then through a forest where the background is only the sound of the water that you hear in the distance. 

Cosa vedere a Brent de l'Art? L'attrazione principale è ovviamente il canyon, frutto del lavoro costante delle acque, partito dalla fine della glaciazione wurmiana (10.000 anni prima di Cristo), e capace di creare uno spettacolo naturale con pochissimi eguali nel nord Italia.

What to see in Brent de l'Art? The main attraction is obviously the canyon, the result of the constant work of the waters, starting from the end of the Wurm glaciation (10,000 years before Christ), and capable of creating a natural spectacle with very few equals in northern Italy.

Un'azione dapprima di incisione della scaglia cretacea e poi di allargamento per erosione di acque molto ricche di polveri e granelli abrasivi.

Gli strati più chiari e compatti che risaltano nelle rocce sono costituiti da sabbie calcaree cementate, mescolate a frammenti di gusci di invertebrati marini, mentre, la colorazione rosso mattone, deriva dalla presenza nei sedimenti di piccolissime quantità di ossido di ferro.

The clearest and most compact layers that shall stand out on the rocks are made of cemented calcareous sands, mixed with fragments of shells of marine invertebrates, while the brick red color derives from the presence of  avery small amounts of iron oxide.

Se siete stati nel west americano, i colori vi ricorderanno quelli di Antelope Canyon ma, soprattutto, quelli dei Narrows del Zion National Park.

If you have ever been to the American southwest, the colors will remind you of those of Antelope Canyon and, above all, those of the Narrows of Zion National Park.

La meta finale sarà un piccolo ponticello, dal quale avrete la miglior vista sul canyon del Brent de l'Art. I più avventurieri prolungheranno la loro visita avventurandosi lungo le rocce (noi l'abbiamo fatto e non ci è sembrato pericoloso, ma è doveroso prestare attenzione!) avvicinandoci ancor di più al canyon.

The final destination will be a small bridge, which offers the best view over the canyon of  Brent de l'Art. The more adventurers will continue their visit by venturing along the rocks (we did it, it's not very dangerous but never forget to be careful!) and getting into the canyon.

Sotto di voli scorre il torrente Ardo, creando un insieme di colori davvero magico. Tra cascate, piscine naturali ed ovviamente lo splendido canyon. L'orario migliore, se amate la fotografia, è tra le 10 e le 12.

Ardo torrent flows below you, creating a truly magical set of colors. Between waterfalls, natural pools and of course the amazing canyon. The best time, if you love photography, is between 10 am and 12 pm.

Oltre il ponticello il sentiero prosegue, ma non starete più percorrendo il trail del Brent de l'Art. Non è ben segnalato, ma se voleste continuare troverete ad aspettarvi altri due sentieri escursionistici (mantenete la sinistra ai due bivi che vi troverete di fronte), dove a fare da sfondo sarà sempre il torrente.

The trail continues beyond the bridge, but you are no longer on the Brent de l'Art trail. If you keep the left at the two forks, you'll face the stream but the trail is not well marked. 

A poco più di mezz'ora ad est del Brent de L'Art, un'altra meraviglia naturale (ahinoi, decisamente più turistica e quindi sicuramente meno affascinante) vi attende, le Grotte del Caglieron. Tornerete a percorrere una parte della "Strada del Prosecco" attraversando la bellissima Vittorio Veneto sino a raggiungere il Bosco del Cansiglio.

Just half an hour east of the Brent de l'Art, another natural wonder (definitely more touristy and therefore certainly less fascinating) awaits you: the Caves of Caglieron. You will drive along part of the "Strada del Prosecco" again, through the beautiful town of Vittorio Veneto until you reach the Bosco del Cansiglio.

Come per il Brent de l'Art, anche le Grotte del Caglieron sono visitabili gratuitamente. Uno dei due parcheggi, quello più vicino all'ingresso, è tuttavia a pagamento. Il rischio di bagnarsi è forte, è consigliato un mantello durante i mesi più freddi.

As for the Brent de l'Art, also the Caves of Caglieron are free of charge. However, one of the two parking lots, the one closest to the entrance, is subject to charges. The risk of getting wet is strong, a coat is recommended during the colder months.

Un altro dei luoghi da non perdere lungo la "Strada del Prosecco" sono proprio le Grotte del Caglieron, ovvero una serie di cavità (naturali e artificiali) attraversate dal torrente Caglieron su strati di arenarie e di marne del Miocene medio.

Another place not to be missed along the "Strada del Prosecco" is the "Caves of Caglieron", a series of cavities (natural and artificial) crossed by the Caglieron stream on layers of sandstone and marl of the Middle Miocene.

Una piccola discesa dal parcheggio vi permetterà in un paio di minuti di raggiungere l'inizio del percorso delle Grotte del Caglieron, dove ad attendervi troverete le prime cavità dalle quali un tempo veniva estratta l'arenaria.

A short descent from the parking lot let you reach in a copule of minutes the beginning of the Caglieron Caves, where you'll see the first caves from which the sandstone was once extracted.

Una passerella in legno vi consentirà di avventurarvi tra le grotte ed ammirare una delle più incredibili bellezze naturali del Veneto, tra cascate, stalattiti e stalagmiti. La parte, chiamiamola così naturale, della visita è sicuramente la più affascinante. Un paradiso per i fotografi.

A wooden walkway will allow you to venture into the caves and admire one of the most incredible natural beauties of Veneto, among waterfalls, stalactites and stalagmites. The natural part of the caves is certainly the most fascinating. A paradise for photographers.

Lasciata la gola, il trail prosegue costeggiando il torrente Caglieron per concludersi all'antico mulino, che ora ospita un bar-ristorante.

Leaving the gorge, the trail continues along the Caglieron stream and end at the old mill, which now hosts a restaurant and a bar.

Noterete che è previsto un allungamento del percorso con la ristrutturazione di un altro mulino che ospiterà un museo.

You will notice that there is an extension of the trail with the renovation of another mill that in the future will house a museum.

Il percorso ad anello vi condurrà al punto di partenza attraversando anche il piccolo e carinissimo Borgo dello Scalpellino.

The loop trail leads  to the starting point also crossing the small and cute village Borgo dello Scalpellino.
