The Hiking Trip - Arizona, Colorado and Utah (day 17: from Moab to Green River - Corona Arch Trailhead, Canyonlands National Park & Crystal Geyser)

Moab e i suoi dintorni sono un'area iper-turistica e non poteva essere altrimenti con due tra i più belli parchi nazionali a disposizione e tante, tantissime possibilità di partecipare ad avventure più o meno adrenaliniche. Ma se siete alla ricerca di un luogo che gli americani definiscono "off the beaten path", ovvero inusuale e poco conosciuto, non andate tanto lontano dal Corona Arch, uno dei segreti meglio conservati dell'intero Utah. In una terra ricca di archi di arenaria, questo bellissimo trail non poteva che concludersi con la magnifica vista di un... arco, senza dubbio capace di rivaleggiare con i più famosi del Arches National Park.

Moab and its surroundings are a hyper-tourist area and it can not be otherwise thanks to two of the most beautiful american national parks aand many, many possibilities to take part in more or less adrenaline-fueled adventures. But if you are looking for a place that the Americans call "off the beaten path", or rather unusual and little known, don't miss the Corona Arch, one of the Utah's best kept secrets. In a land full of sandstone arches, this beautiful trail could only end with the magnificent view of an arch, as beautiful as the ones you see in the Arches National Park.

CORONA ARCH TRAILHEAD, IL SEGRETO MEGLIO CONSERVATO DI MOAB

Seppur ancora poco conosciuto al grande pubblico, il trail che conduce al Corona Arch è uno dei più amati dai locali, che percorrono la prima parte dell'ormai mitica Intrepid Potash Road (di cui parleremo in seguito) per godersi la solitudine di un trail decisamente affascinante. La strada che dovrete seguire per una decina di miglia buone è la "279" che s'imbocca a nord di Moab (deviazione sulla sinistra provenendo dalla città), proprio poche centinaia di metri prima dell'accesso al parco nazionale di Arches. Il tratto di strada, nonostante faccia già parte della Potash Road, è asfaltato e conduce al parcheggio (sulla destra) del Corona Arch Trailhead, lungo 2.3 miglia tra andata e ritorno.

CORONA ARCH TRAILHEAD, MOAB'S BEST KEPT SECRET 

Although still little known to the general public, the trail that leads to the Corona Arch is one of the most loved by the locals, who drive along the first part of the now legendary "Intrepid Potash Road" (which we will discuss later) to enjoy the solitude of a charming trail. The road that you will have to follow for about ten good miles is the "279": you'll take this road north of Moab (on the left coming from the city), just a few hundred meters before entering Arches national park. This stretch of Potash Road road is paved and leads to the parking lot (on the right) of the Corona Arch Trailhead, a 2.3 miles (round trip) trail.

CORONA ARCH TRAILHEAD - IL TRAIL NEL DETTAGLIO

L'attacco del sentiero è già, di per sè, tremendamente affascinante. Fatevi largo tra le rocce che caratterizzano la prima parte (circa 50 metri) in salita del percorso sino ad arrivare in cima alla collina. Sotto di voi vedrete sempre più piccola la strada e sempre più imponenti le rocce che circondano l'area.

CORONA ARCH TRAILHEAD - THE TRAIL IN DETAIL

The beginning of the trail is tremendously fascinating. Make your way through the rocks that characterize the first 50 meters (uphill) of the trail until you reach the top of the hill. You will notice that the road gets smaller and smaller and the rocks surrounding the area more and more imposing.

Una volta in cima, ecco la seconda peculiarità del Corona Arch Trailhead: la ferrovia che "taglia" in due il trail. Prima di attraversare i binari e proseguire lungo il sentiero, non mancheranno le foto di rito, per una delle più belle cartoline di Moab.

Once at the top, you'll notice the second peculiarity of the Corona Arch Trailhead: the railway that crosses the trail. Before crossing the tracks and continuing along the path, you'll certainly take the usual pictures in one of the best Moab's spot. 

Lasciata alle spalle la ferrovia, il percorso diventa abbastanza pianeggiante. Non preoccupatevi, seguire il trail è semplicissimo: vi basterà tenere sott'occhio le diverse pietre poste una sull'altra, in modo tale non far perdere all'escursionista né l'orientamento, né il sentiero. Ogni qualvolta il sentiero vi sembrerà meno riconoscibile, aumenteranno i "cairns", ovvero le pietre che faranno sì che non perdiate mai di vista il percorso.

Leaving the railway behind, the trail becomes fairly flat. Don't worry, this is an easy trail to follow: just keep an eye on the different cairns. If you follow them, you won't certainly get lost. Whenever the path seems less marked, there will be more "cairns".

Sin dalla metà del tragitto, poi, l'arco diventerà visibile in lontananza, permettendovi di non perdere mai di vista l'obiettivo finale. Il trail è semplice, eccezion fatta per l'ultima parte, dove dovrete prima salire su una piccola scala e poi, arrampicarvi tramite cavi di acciaio che sono di sostegno per la salita.

About half-way then you'll notice the arch in the background, this mean that you can't get lost anymore. This is a pretty easy trail, except for the last part: grab the cable and climb steps chopped into a sandstone slab. Climb a five-step metal ladder above to a small, twisted juniper tree and a higher bench. 

Molto più difficile a dirsi che a farsi verrebbe da dire. La verità è che non avrete alcuna difficoltà a raggiungere quello che a parer nostro è il più bell'arco di Moab. Se non altro per la possibilità di poterlo ammirare nella più totale solitudine, una rarità quando si parla di bellezze naturali a stelle e strisce. A dirla tutta gli archi sono due: prima del Corona Arch incontrerete il Bowtie Arch.

It is harder said than done, believe us. The truth is that you will have no difficulty to get to the most beautiful arch in Moab (in our opinion, of course). At least because it's not crowded, a rarity when it comes to american natural beauties. To be honest, there are wo arches: the Bowtie Arch is located just before the Corona Arch.

Una piccola "tip": se ne avrete voglia, passate sotto l'arco e proseguite per una ventina di metri ancora, perchè è da qui che potrete scattare le foto migliori, soprattutto se state percorrendo il trail al mattino.

A quick tip: if you wish, just pass under the arch and keep walking for about twenty meteres: this is the best spot for a perfect picture, especially if you're hiking in the morning.

SERVICES: Restrooms are located at the beginning of the trail. During the warmer months, do this hike first thing in the morning since it gets sun all day. Carry plenty of water and wear a hat.

INTREPID POTASH ROAD AND SHAFER TRAIL, LA STRADA DEGLI... INTREPIDI!

Premessa, doverosa. Noi ne abbiamo percorso solo le prime 3 miglia, salvo poi tornare sui nostri passi. Avevamo chiesto tanto alla nostra vettura durante questo lungo road trip e non ce la siamo sentita di spingerla anche lungo la Potash Road che poi sarebbe diventata Shafer Trail. Non esitiamo a dire che questo rimarrà l'unico grande rimpianto di un viaggio in cui ci siamo spesso spinti vicini al limite. Non fate come noi e, se non ha piovuto nei giorni precedenti e, soprattutto, se avete un 4x4 a disposizione, una volta lasciato il Corona Arch Trailhead proseguite lungo la "276" che dopo qualche miglia diventa una polverosissima e decisamente sconnessa strada sterrata. Per sconnessa intendiamo con autentiche rocce sporgenti dall'asfalto. Probabilmente i 38 km più adrenalinici dello stato dello Utah!

INTREPID POTASH ROAD AND SHAFER TRAIL, THE INTREPID... ROADS!

We only covered the first 3 miles, then we went back the same way. We had asked our car too much during this long road trip and we didn't feel like pushing it along the Potash Road which would later become Shafer Trail. Having said that, we do not hesitate to say that this is the only major regret of a journey in which we have often pushed ourselves close to the limit. Don't be like us! If it has not rained in the previous days and, above all, if you're driving a 4wd car, as soon as you leave the Corona Arch Trailhead keep following the "276" which then becomes a dusty and decidedly bumpy dirt road. Well, it's not just bumpy: we mean that there're authentic protruding rocks. Probably the most adrenaline-fueled 38km in the state of Utah!

POTASH ROAD AND SHAFER TRAIL - TUTTO QUELLO CHE C'E' DA SAPERE

Dopo 27 km da quando avrete imboccato la "276" l'asfalto, bruscamente s'interrompe. La strada che sino a qui si chiamava Potash Road diventa Intrepid Potash Road. Il nome, una volta tanto, dice già tutto. Durante la prima parte, mentre vi allontanate dal fiume Colorado, attraverserete le vasche saline della Moab Salt Production che potrete notare ancor meglio in tutto il suo splendore visitando il Dead Horse Point State Park. Il tracciato, qui identificato come South Fork Road o Country Road 142 si orienta quindi verso la spettacolare zona di Goose Necks, dove il corso d’acqua forma quegli stretti meandri che costituiscono la principale attrattiva del già citato Dead Horse Point State Park. Incrocerete anche il Thelma e Louise Point, ovvero il punto esatto in cui Thelma e Louise, nel celebre film del 1991, si gettarono nel fiume Colorado con la propria vettura durante la scena conclusiva.

POTASH ROAD AND SHAFER TRAIL - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

After 27 km along the "276", the road becomes very dirty. The Potash Road becomes... Intrepid Potash Road. The name, for once, says it all. During the first part, as you move away from the Colorado River, you will cross the salt tanks of the Moab Salt Production which you can see even better by visiting the Dead Horse Point State Park. The road, identified as South Fork Road or Country Road 142, leads you to the spectacular area of Goose Necks, where the watercourse forms those narrow meanders that constitute the main attraction of the Dead Horse Point State Park. You will also encounter the Thelma and Louise Point, the place where Thelma and Louise, in the famous 1991 movie leap off a cliff with their car during the final scene.

Se, nella prima parte le uniche problematiche sono state relative al terreno sconnesso, ora la faccenda si fa decisamente più seria. Inizia il Shafer Canyon e si comincia a salire. Dimenticatevi dell'Intrepid Potash Road, da qui sino alla cima di parlerà di Shafer Trail che nonostante il suono meno traumatico, è probabilmente il vero tratto per gli... intrepidi. Svoltate a destra all'unico bivio che incontrerete (se state provenendo dalla "279") ed entrate nel territorio del Canyonlands National Park. Quest’ultimo 
tratto offre emozioni indimenticabili: la pista chiaramente visibile dal basso (e ancor di più dall'altro, quando starete visitando Canyonlands), si dipana ripidissima lungo l’alta parete (The Neck) proponendo una sequenza ininterrotta di scorci mozzafiato. La strada è abbastanza stretta e sale repentinamente, sotto di voi c'è solo il vuoto...

Well, if in the first part the only issues have been related to uneven ground, now it does turn into something more serious, Now you're in the Shafer Canyon and the road begins to climb. Forget about the Intrepid Potash Road, now it's time to talk about the Shafer Trail which, despite the less traumatic name, is probably the real... intrepid road. Turn right at the only crossroads (if you are coming from the "279") and enter the territory of Canyonlands National Park. This last stretch offers unforgettable emotions and views: the track clearly visible from below, unfolds steeply along the high wall (The Neck) offering an uninterrupted sequence of breathtaking views. The road is quite narrow and rises suddenly...

CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK, IL SECONDO CANYON PIU' FAMOSO D'AMERICA

Con i suoi 1366 km2, Canyonlands è di gran lunga il parco più grande dello Utah. Ed è proprio qui che vi ritroverete dopo aver percorso lo Shafer Trail o, se volete qualcosa di più comodo, la ben più semplice Island in The Sky Road che conduce all'area a nord del parco, quella più visitata e famosa dell'intero parco. Già, perchè Canyonlands è diviso in tre aree ben distinte: Island in the Sky (“Isola nel Cielo”), The Needles  (“Le Punte”) e The Maze (“Il Labirinto”). Quando si parla di selvaggio e luoghi inesplorati (anche dall'uomo), nulla batte Canyonlands National Park, per alcuni anche più bello di sua maestà il Grand Canyon, di gran lunca il canyon più famoso d'America.

When it comes to wild and unexplored places, nothing beats Canyonlands National Park, for some people even more beautiful than his majesty the Grand Canyon, which is by far the most famous canyon in America.

COME VISITARE CANYONLANDS - ISLAND IN THE SKY

Island in the Sky è l'area più popolare del parco e si estende a nord dei fiumi Colorado e Green River: non sbagliamo se lo definissimo un enorme altopiano dal quale ammirare un panorama tra i più belli degli Usa, anche e soprattutto grazie alla strada asfaltata che lo attraversa (la Grand View Point Road) ed i numerosi view point.

1) Shafer Canyon Overlook & Shafer Trail View Point

Vorrete ammirare dall'alto l'impresa che avete appena compiuto percorrendo lo Shafer Trail? Il Shafer Canyon Overlook, posizionato dall'altro lato della strada del visitor center ed il successivo Shafer Trail View Point sono i due luoghi migliori per gustarsi lo spettacolo di una delle strade più terrificanti del nord america.

HOW TO VISIT CANYONLANDS - ISLAND IN THE SKY

Island in the Sky is the most popular area of the park: it extends north of the Colorado and Green River rivers: we are not mistaken if we define it as a huge plateau which offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in the USA, also and above all thanks to the road paved road that crosses it (the Grand View Point Road) and the various view points.

1) Shafer Canyon Overlook & Shafer Trail View Point

Would you like to see what you've just done? Are you ready to see the Shafer Trail from above? The Shafer Canyon Overlook, located across the street from the visitor center and the subsequent Shafer Trail View Point are the two best places to enjoy the spectacle of one of the most terrifying roads in North America.

2) Mesa Arch Trailhead

Questo è l'on the road dei trails e non potevano non segnalare il piccolo percorso (800 metri) che conduce al Mesa Arch. Già, perchè anche Canyonlands ha il suo... arco

3) Green River Overlook

Più che un trail, una brevissima passeggiata (0.2 miglia). In lontananza il Green River che sembra piccolissimo fiumiciattolo. La vista si estende sino a 100 miglia di distanza nelle giornate più luminose. In primo piano il bacino del Colorado con il White Rim.

2) Mesa Arch Trailhead

This is a road trip made by... trails and we have to mention the small hike (0.6 miles) that leads to the Mesa Arch. Yes, because even Canyonlands has its ... arch

3) Green River Overlook

More than a trail, it's a very short walk (0.2 miles). In the distance the Green River which looks like a very small stream. The view extends up to 100 miles away on brighter days. In the foreground, the Colorado basin with the White Rim.

4) Grand view Point overlook

L'ultimo view point, forse il più affascinante di tutto Canyonlands. La vista è stupefacente, ancor migliore se percorrerete il trail di 1.8 miglia a/r del Grand View Point

The last view point, which is perhaps the most fascinating of all Canyonlands. The view is amazing, even better if you hike the 1.8 mile round trip Grand View Point trail.

GREEN RIVER, L'ALTERNATIVA A MOAB 

 IL TRAMONTO ALLO SKYFALL GUESTROOMS

Lo sappiamo, è difficile allontanarsi da Moab quando si ha in programma di visitare tutto il ben di Dio che l'area ha da offrire. Qui c'è tutto, ristoranti, supermercati... ma anche tanti, troppi turisti. Ecco, se cercate un piccolo paesino tranquillo, lontano dai riflettori, il posto che fa per voi è Green River, 50 miglia a nord di Moab. Quando scegliere Green River? Solitamente a Moab si rimane due notti, il tempo necessario per esplorare tutti i parchi nazionali e le bellezze dell'area. Il nostro consiglio è dunque di spendere la prima di notte a Moab, mentre la seconda (se la vostra tappa successiva è il Colorado, inteso come stato, o Capitol Reef & Bryce Canyon) spendetela a Green River. E possibilmente al Bed and Breakfast Skyfall Guestrooms, tre camere a tema (Goblin Valley, Crystal Geyser e Cliffs) con vista sul Green River. Raramente potrete trovare questa pace e quiete in quel di Moab. Per non parlare del tramonto...

GREEN RIVER, THE ALTERNATIVE TO MOAB 

THE SUNSET AT THE SKYFALL GUESTROOMS

We know that it's very difficult to get away from Moab when you're plannning to visit all the special places that surround this city. There's everything here: restaurants, supermarkets ... but also many, many, many tourists. Here, if you are looking for a small quiet village, away from the spotlight, the place for you is definitely Green River, 50 miles north of Moab. When should you choose Green River? People usually stay in Moab at least 2 nights, the time necessary to explore all the national parks and the beauties of the area. Our advice is therefore to spend the first night in Moab and the second (only if your next stop is the state of Colorado or Capitol Reef & Bryce Canyon) in Green River. And possibly stay at the Skyfall Guestrooms Bed and Breakfast, three themed rooms (Goblin Valley, Crystal Geyser and Cliffs) overlooking the Green River. You will rarely find this peace and quiet in that of Moab. Not to mention the sunset ...

CRYSTAL GEYSER - UN GEYSER DEL TUTTO PARTICOLARE...

Anche Green River ha le sue chicche. Una su tutte? Il Crystal Geyser, uno dei pochi geyser guidati dall'anidride carbonica ad acqua fredda al mondo.  A causa della sua imprevedibilità, tuttavia, potreste dover aver molta pazienza nell’aspettare che erutti. L'acqua può fuoriuscire, infatti, in qualunque momento (uno studio del 2005 ha rilevato che il 66% delle volte il geyser erutta ogni 8 ore circa).

CRYSTAL GEYSER, A VERY SPECIAL GEYSER

Even Green River has its gems One above all? The Crystal Geyser, one of the only cold water carbon dioxide driven geysers in the world. Due to it's unpredictability, it can be an exercise in patience. It can go off anywhere between every hour to 24+ hours... During 2005, a study of the timing of the eruptions found them to be bimodal.[1] About 66% of eruptions in the study occurred about 8 hours after the previous eruption, and the rest about 22 hours after.

Il geyser fu creato accidentalmente dall'uomo quando un'operazione di perforazione nel 1935 creò di fatto, per sbaglio, il geyser. Come raggiungere il Crystal Geyser? Arrivarci non è semplice, ecco qualche indicazione: percorrete a ritroso la "70", ovvero la strada che taglia in due Green River verso sud-est, in direzione Moab. Passate sotto l'autostrada e, al successivo "stop", svoltate a sinistra, lungo la New Area 51 road, una strada sconnessa ma asfaltata. Al primo incrocio che affronterete, svoltate a destra lungo la Crystal Geyser Safari Route, una strada quest'ultima non asfaltata che dopo un paio di miglia diventa Little Valley Road e conduce al Crystal Geyser. Considerate che, dal momento in cui passerete sotto l'autostrada, dovrete percorrere circa 7 miglia per raggiungere il Crystal Geyser ed aspettatevi di essere completamente sia durante il tragitto che al geyser stesso.

The cold Crystal Geyser was created accidentally in 1935 while drilling operation when operators hit a pocket of soda at 800 feet deep. High pressured soda water shot up in the air becoming the cold Crystal Geyser. How to get to Crystal Geyser? Getting there is not easy, here are some tips: follow the "70" (the road that crosses Green River) towards Moab (southeast). Then pass under the highway and turn left onto the New Area 51 road at the crossroads. This is a rough but paved road. At the first intersection, turn right along the Crystal Geyser Safari Route, an unpaved road that after a couple of miles becomes Little Valley Road and leads to the Crystal Geyser. The geyser is located about 8.5 miles far from Green River and expect to be completely alone on the way to this weird but pretty nice place.

Se Moab, con i suoi panorami, vi aveva ipnotizzato, preparatevi a rimanere davvero senza fiato. Già, perchè quando si percorrono la UT 24 ed ancor di più la UT 12, due delle scenic byways più belle del paese, vi verrà voglia di fermarvi ad ogni piazzola di sosta per immortalare uno dei paesaggi più belli d'America, quello della zona centrale dello Utah. Eppure, nonostante la sua ormai conosciuta bellezza, il tratto che separa il Bryce Canyon (dove inizia la Ut12) e Green River (la cittadina di cui abbiamo parlato nel precedente post, 50 miglia a nord di Moab, da dove prende il via la Ut24) è per la maggior parte dei turisti una tappa di passaggio da compiere in una sola giornata per non perdersi le altre bellezze dello stato dei mormoni.

If Moab, with its panoramas, had certainly hypnotized you, just prepare to be truly breathless. Yes, because while traveling the UT 24 and even more on UT 12, two of the most beautiful scenic byways in the country, you'll definitely want to stop at every vista point to capture one of the most beautiful landscapes in America, that of the south-central Utah. Yet, despite its beauty, the stretch that separates Bryce Canyon (where the Ut12 begins) and Green River (the town we talked about in the previous post, 50 miles north of Moab, from where the Ut24 begins) is for most tourists a kind of drive through completed in only one day. They just don't want to miss the other beauties of the mormon state...

Un errore, secondo il nostro punto di vista, perchè se ne facciamo una questione di attrazioni, le due strade (collegate l'un l'altra), meriterebbero molto più spazio, anche e soprattutto per concedersi una notte in uno dei luoghi più particolari e suggestivi nei quali possiate alloggiare negli Usa...

That's a mistake, according to our point of view, because if it's a matter of attractions, the two roads (connected to each other), worth much more time. And you'll also be able to spend a in one the most particular and suggestive places in the USA ...

I TRE LUOGHI IMPERDIBILI LUNGO LA UT 24

1) LITTLE WILD HORSE CANYON TRAIL 

Ma andiamo con ordine e, proprio per non mettere troppa carne al fuoco al vostro on the road, abbiamo selezionato i tre luoghi imperdibili della Ut 24, due decisamente famosi, uno invece sconosciuto al turismo di massa, ma che certamente non vi deluderà. Con la doverosa precisazione che non si tratta di una classifica: li abbiamo selezionati semplicemente a seconda della loro posizione geografica, da nord a sud. Ed è proprio dal meno conosciuto che partiamo, il Little Wild Horse Canyon Trail, un'autentica chicca poco pubblicizzata ma che a nostro parere è un'autentica occasione da non perdere, più della vicina Goblin Valley.

THREE UNMISSABLE PLACES ALONG THE UT 24

1) LITTLE WILD HORSE CANYON TRAIL

 But first things first. We don't want to to overload the cart and selected only the three unmissable places of the UT 24: two of them are decidedly famous, one instead is pretty unknown to mass tourism, but won't certainly disappoint you. A necessary clarification: that this is not a ranking. We have selected them simply according to their geographical position, from north to south. And it is from the least known that we start, the Little Wild Horse Canyon Trail, an authentic gem little advertised: in our opinion this is an authentic opportunity not to be missed, more than the nearby Goblin Valley.

Per raggiungerlo dovrete effettuare una piccola deviazione dalla Ut24 e seguire le indicazioni per il Goblin Valley State Park: percorrere dunque per qualche miglia la Temple Mountain Road e poi svoltate a sinistra lungo la Goblin Valley Road; qualche centinaio di metri prima di arrivare al Gate che sancisce l'accesso al parco svoltate a sinistra lungo la Wild Horse Road per circa 5 miglia sino a raggiungere il parcheggio del Little Wild Horse Canyon & Bell Canyon Trail.

To reach it, just make a quick detour from the UT24 and follow the signs for Goblin Valley State Park: drive the Temple Mountain Road for few miles and then turn left along Goblin Valley Road; a few hundred meters before the park's gate turn left along the Wild Horse Road and follow it for about 5 miles until you get to the parking lot of the Little Wild Horse Canyon & Bell Canyon Trail.

Perchè visitare il Little Wild Horse Canyon? Semplice, perchè è uno dei pochissimi "slot canyons" dello Utah, per intenderci una sorta di fratellino del celeberrimo Antelope Canyon. Con gli indubbi vantaggi che è gratuito e che, soprattutto, non richiama le stesse folle del più famoso canyon dell'Arizona. E non è finita qui. E' vero che l'intero loop è decisamente lungo (8 miglia), ma avrete la possibilità anche di percorrere solo una piccola parte del percorso ed avventurarvi comunque negli slot canyons.

Why visit the Little Wild Horse Canyon? Well, it's simple. Because it is one of the very few "slot canyons" in Utah, a kind of little brother of the famous Antelope Canyon. With the undoubted advantages that it is free and does not attract the same crowds as the most famous canyon in Arizona. And that's not all. It is true that the entire loop is pretty long (8 miles), but there's the chance to hike only a small part of the trail and still venture into the slot canyons.

La sua posizione isolata e sprovvista di "facilities" (eccezion fatta per i bagni posizionati al parcheggio) e soprattutto ranger nei dintorni, obbliga tuttavia ad un'attenta valutazione del meteo prima di percorrere il trail: il rischio di flash flood qui è, infatti, altissimo. Vi consigliamo di firmare il registro posizionato all'attacco del sentiero e di fotografare l'unica mappa esposta.

Its isolated position without services (except for the restrooms located in the parking lot) and above all rangers in the surrounding area, however, requires a careful consideration over the weather before hiking the trail: the risk of flash flooding here is, in fact , very high. We advise you to sign the register positioned at the beginning of the trail and to take a picture of the exposed map.

IL TRAIL NEL DETTAGLIO

Come vi abbiamo anticipato, non è necessario percorrere l'intero trail per assaporare la magia degli strettissimi (a volte non più di mezzo metro) slot canyons. Potrete, infatti, percorrere solamente i primi 3 km (che poi sono anche i più belli) e tornare sui vostri passi. Nel caso in cui voleste invece percorrere l'intero loop, il trail non di deluderà di certo. La prima parte segue il fiume (prosciugato) per 500 metri sino al primo ed unico bivio: il cartello indica i due canyons, il Little Wild Horse ed il Bell Canyon Trail.

THE TRAIL IN DETAIL

As we have anticipated, it is not necessary to hike the entire trail to savor the magic of the very tight slot canyons. In fact, you could just cover the first 3 km (which are also the most beautiful) and retrace your steps. In case you want to hike the entire loop instead, the trail will certainly not let you down. The first part follows the river (dried up) for about 500 meters until the first and only crossroads: the sign indicates the two canyons, the Little Wild Horse and the Bell Canyon Trail.

Procedendo sul sentiero di sinistra seguirete il loop partendo dal Bell Canyon e chiuderete con il Little Wild Horse Canyon, ma se doveste avere poco tempo a disposizione, tenete la destra e procedete verso il Little Wild Horse, decisamente il canyon più affascinante. Potrete poi decidere se completare il loop o se tornare indietro dopo aver visitato lo slot canyon. Perdersi è sostanzialmente impossibile e l'unica vera difficoltà la troverete subito all'inizio del loop, quando dovrete scalare dei piccoli massi per poter proseguire.

INFO: Valutare il meteo prima di percorrere il trail. Non è necessario percorrerlo interamente per visitare gli slot canyon: bastano anche 2 km.

If you preceed on the left path you will follow the loop starting from the Bell Canyon and ending with the Little Wild Horse Canyon, but if you have little time, bear right right and proceed towards the Little Wild Horse, definitely the most fascinating canyon. You can then decide whether to complete the loop or go back after visiting the slot canyon. Getting lost is basically impossible and the only real obstacle is located at the beginning of the loop, when you'll have to climb small boulders in order to continue.

2) GOBLIN VALLEY STATE PARK

Proprio accanto al Little Wild Horse Canyon sorge la Goblin Valley, un deserto del tutto particolare, fatto di formazioni rocciose che raramente troverete altrove. Valle che ha cambiato nome diverse volte, da "Mushroom Valley" (nome voluto dal mandriano Arthur Chaffin) all'attuale "Goblin Valley", poichè le sue protuberanze ricordano moltissimo quelle dei Goblin, soprattutto al tramonto. Essendo sotto tutela dello stato dello Utah, per accedervi e passeggiare nella valle occorre pagare la "day fee use area", proprio come accade anche nei parchi nazionali.

2) GOBLIN VALLEY STATE PARK

Right next to the Little Wild Horse Canyon stands the Goblin Valley, a very special desert made of rock formations that you will rarely find elsewhere. This is a valley that has changed its name several times, from "Mushroom Valley" (name wanted by the herdsman Arthur Chaffin) to the current "Goblin Valley", as its protuberances are very reminiscent of those of the Goblins, especially at sunset. Being under the protection of the state of Utah, you'll have to pay a day use fee to visit the Goblin Valley State Park.

La Goblin Valley è uno dei pochi parchi americani che possono essere ammirati anche senza percorrere un trail. Il nostro consiglio è semplicemente quello di camminare tra le formazioni rocciose: infatti avrete lasciato la vostra auto su un piccolo promontorio e la noterete dovunque andrete. Perdersi è di fatto impossibile.

GOBLIN VALLEY'S TRAILS

The Goblin Valley is one of the few American parks that can be admired even without hiking a trail. Our advice is simply to walk among the rock formations: there's in fact only one spot where you'll be allowed to leave your car, a small promontory. You will cerainly notice it wherever you go. Getting lost is actually impossible.

Ma, se doveste voler approfondire l'area, esiste comunque la possibilità di avventurarsi in diversi trails. Il primo che vi segnaliamo è l'Entrada Canyon Trail (1.2 miglia, durata: 45 minuti), l'unico vero percorso semplice dell'intero parco, adatto anche ai bambini.

But if you want to explore the Goblin Valley deeper, there is still the possibility of venturing into different trails. The first one that we recommend is the Entrada Canyon Trail (1.2 miles, duration: 45 minutes), the only true easy trail of the entire park, also suitable for children.

Di difficoltà media sono invece il Carmel Canyon Trail (1.6 miglia, durata: 1 ora), un loop che vi consente di ammirare Molly's Castle, una delle principali attrazione della Goblin Valley ed il Curtis Bench Trail (2.1 miglia: durata: 1.30 h), un percorso leggermente più impegnativo del precedente e che vi porterà a vedere anche le le Three Sisters, la Wild Horse Butte e le Herny Mountains. Il più difficile dei percorsi è senza dubbio il Goblin's Lair (1.5 miglia), l'unico trail del parco per il quale bisogna ottenere un permesso e che conduce ad un piccolo Slot Canyon.

The Carmel Canyon Trail (1.6 miles, duration: 1 hour), a loop that allows you to admire Molly's Castle, one of the main attractions of the Goblin Valley and the Curtis Bench Trail (2.1 miles: duration: 1.30 h) , a slightly more challenging trail than the previous one and which will also take you to see the Three Sisters, the Wild Horse Butte and the Herny Mountains, are considered medium-difficult trails. Howewer, the most difficult one is undoubtedly the Goblin's Lair (1.5 miles), the only trail in the park that requires a permit. It leads to a small Slot Canyon.

3) Capitol Reef National Park

Le solite bellezze naturali sconvolgenti dello stato dello Utah, un insediamento mormone ricco di frutteti ed una posizione geografica davvero invidiabile. Sono gli splendidi ingredienti di uno dei parchi meno visitati dell'intero west americano, uno dei misteri per il quale non abbiamo una risposta adeguata. Già, perchè Capitol Reef National Park è onestamente splendido e, nonostante sia tappa obbligata per chi lascia il Bryce Canyon (o lo Zion) in direzione Moab, viene spesso e volentieri snobbato anche e soprattutto per la solita questione del poco tempo a disposizione di cui abbiamo parlato all'inizio del post.

3) Capitol Reef National Park

The usual unsettling natural beauty of the great state of Utah, a Mormon settlement full of orchards and a truly enviable geographic location. They are just the splendid ingredients of one of the least visited parks in the entire American West, one of the mysteries for which we do not have an adequate answer. Yes, because Capitol Reef National Park is honestly beautiful and, despite being a must for anyone who leaves Bryce Canyon (or Zion) in the direction of Moab, is often and willingly snubbed because visitors have little time to spend visiting this amazing area.

Eppure il parco, un'autentica oasi per chi fugge dal turismo di massa, regala scorci imperdibili, regalo del Waterpocket Fold, ovvero una barriera geologica lunga un centinaio di miglia e che dà il nome all'intero parco grazie alle sue colorate pareti rocciose, canyon millenari e monoliti.

Yet the park, an authentic oasis for those fleeing mass tourism, offers unmissable views, a gift of the Waterpocket Fold, or a geological barrier a hundred miles long which gives its name to the whole park thanks to its colorful rocky walls, millennial canyons and monoliths.

Fruita, lo storico insediamento mormone, è il punto di partenza per la visita del Capitol Reef National Park. Qui troverete la vecchia scuola, gli edifici storici come la Gifford House Museum & Store e, soprattutto, oltre 2500 alberi da frutto che danno il nome (Fruita, appunto...) al piccolo insediamento. L'icona è senza dubbio lo storico fienile, il "barn", l'immagine da sempre di Capitol Reef National Park. Uno dei must  quando si visita il parco è gustarsi una delle splendide torte alla frutta (a km 0, ovviamente) della Gifford House.

Fruita, the historic Mormon settlement, is the starting point for a visit to the Capitol Reef National Park. Here you will find the old school, historic buildings such as the Gifford House Museum & Store and, above all, over 2500 fruit trees that give the name (Fruita,precisely) to the small settlement. The icon is undoubtedly the historic barn, the long-standing image of Capitol Reef National Park. One of the must when visiting the park is to enjoy one of the amazing fruit pies at the Gifford House.

LA SCENIC DRIVE ED I MIGLIORI TRAIL DI CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK

A Fruita prende il via la Scenic Drive, una strada lunga 12.7 km che attraversa da nord a sud il parco. A lato della scenic drive, troverete alcune strade sterrate che conducono a numerosi trail. Il sito del parco nazionale, ben fatto, raccomanda anche gli stop, imperdibili, lungo la strada: https://www.nps.gov/care/planyourvisit/scenicdrive.htm. Per chi volesse invece avventurarsi in qualche trail (posizionati sia lungo la scenic drive che lungo la Ut24), c'è davvero l'imbarazzo della scelta...

THE SCENIC DRIVE AND THE BEST TRAILS OF CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK

The Scenic Drive begins in Fruita. It is a 12.7 km long road that crosses the park from north to south. Beside the scenic drive, you will find some dirt roads that lead to numerous trails. The well-made national park website also recommends unmissable stops along the way: https://www.nps.gov/care/planyourvisit/scenicdrive.htm. For those who want to hike some trails (located both along the scenic drive and the Ut24), there's no shortage of choice 

- Hickman Bridge Trail 

Provenendo dalla Goblin Valley, l'Hickman Bridge Trail è il primo sentiero escursionistico che vi troverete di fronte, proprio poco prima della vecchia scuola. Considerato da "All Trails" come miglior sentiero del parco, questo trail di 2.9 km che conduce ad un arco segue prima il corso del Sulphur Creek per poi risalire lungo il canyon.

- Hickman Bridge Trail
Coming from the Goblin Valley, the Hickman Bridge Trail is the first hiking trail you will notice visiting Capitol Reef National Park, just before the old school. Considered by "All Trails" as the best trail in the park, this 2.9 km trail that leads to an arch first follows the course of Sulfur Creek and then climbs up the canyon.

- Golden Throne Trail

E' più importante sentiero che prende il via dalla Scenic Drive e per questo anche uno dei più famosi del parco. Il sentiero, breve e impegnativo (3 km), vi porterà attraverso il Canyon di Capitol Gorge sino alla vista finale sul Golden Throne, una roccia decisamente imponente. 

- Cohab Canyon Trail

Un altro trail di 3 km che vi regala nuove vedute su un canyon. Questa a volta è il Cohab Canyon a farvi compagnia. L’attacco del sentiero è situato lungo la Ut24, poche miglia a est del Visitor Center.

- Golden Throne Trail
It's the most important trail that begins along the Scenic Drive and for this reason also one of the most famous in the entire park. Thetrail. which is short (3 km) but challenging will take you through the Capitol Gorge Canyon to the final view of the Golden Throne, a decidedly imposing rock.

- Cohab Canyon Trail
Another 3 km trail that gives you new views of a canyon. This time is the Cohab Canyon to keep you company. The beginning of the trail is located along Ut24, a few miles east of the Visitor Center.

- Chimney Rock Loop

A nord ovest, lungo la Ut24, troverete invece i 6 km del Chimney Rock Loop Trail, che conduce nel cuore delle strane formazioni rocciose del Waterpocket Fold. 

- Gooseneck Trail & Sunset Point

Ecco, se c'è un luogo ed un piccolo trail davvero da non perdere, insieme all'Hickman Bridge trail, è il Gooseneck Trail & Sunset Point, situato ad ovest del parco lungo la Ut24, proprio poco prima di raggiungere la cittadina di Torrey. Percorrete il breve tratto di strada sterrata (Panorama Point Dr) e raggiungete prima Panorama Point per una foto e poi il breve sentiero Gooseneck Trail. Davanti a voi si aprirà una vista, splendida, su Goosenek e soprattutto sul canyon di Sulphur Creek. Il momento migliore, come si evince dal nome, per visitarlo è al tramonto.

- Chimney Rock Loop
Locate northwest of Fruita, along the Ut24, there are the 6 km of the Chimney Rock Loop Trail, which lead to the heart of the strange rock formations of the Waterpocket Fold.

- Gooseneck Trail & Sunset Point
Here, if there is a place and a quick trail you shouldn't miss, together with the Hickman Bridge trail, it is definitely the Gooseneck Trail & Sunset Point, located west of the park along the Ut24, just before reaching the town of Torrey . Follow the short stretch of the dirt road called Panorama Point Dr and first reach Panorama Point for a picture and then the short Gooseneck Trail. It offers an amazing view on the Goosenek and above all on the canyon of Sulfur Creek. The best time, as the name suggests, is obviously at sunset.

BROKEN SPUR INN, UNA NOTTE IN UNA CAROVANA DEI PRIMI PIONIERI

Vi ricordate quando, in apertura di post, vi abbiamo consigliato di percorrere con tutta calma sia la Ut 12 che la Ut 24. Uno dei motivi è legato al fatto che potrete pernottare a Torrey, la gate town del parco nazionale di Capitol Reef. No, la cittadina in sé non è imperdibile, ma c'è un luogo dove val davvero la pena spendere la notte. Parliamo ovviamente del Broken Spur Inn & Steakhouse, un hotel ristorante del tutto particolare, che offre la possibilità di pernottare... in una carovana! Esatto, la stessa che usarono i primi pionieri quando, attraversando le praterie centrali degli Stati Uniti, arrivarono nel west. Un'esperienza indimenticabile.

BROKEN SPUR INN, A NIGHT IN A FIRST PIONEER'S WAGON

Do you remember when, at the beginning of this posts, we said that the Ut 12 and Ut 24 should be visited quietly. One reason is linked to the fact that you'll be able to spend a night in Torrey, Capitol Reef National Park's gate town. Well, the town itself is not unmissable, but there is a place where it is really worth spending the night. We are obviously talking about the Broken Spur Inn & Steakhouse, a very particular hotel-restaurant, which offers an unforgettable, refreshingly different, truly unique American West experience: spend the night in a big wagons used by the pioneers as they crossed the prairies, traversed mountains and colonized the American West.

Ovviamente potrete dormire con qualche comfort in più, come ad esempio un letto molto, molto comodo, l'aria condizionata ed un bagno privato situato appena fuori la carovana, chiamata "canestoga wagon". L'hotel mette a disposizione anche diverse camere in stile motel, ma consigliamo vivamente (prenotando per tempo) di alloggiare nelle carovane e godere prima di un tramonto fantastico e poi della notte stellata del cielo dello Utah.

Obviously guests can sleep with some extra comforts, such as a very, very comfortable bed, air conditioning and a private bathroom located just outside the Canestoga Wagon. The hotel also offers several motel-style rooms, but we strongly recommend (book in advance!) to spend the night in the wagon and enjoy first a fantastic sunset and then the starry night of the Utah sky.

The Hiking Trip - Arizona, Colorado and Utah (day 19: from Torrey to Springdale. The most beautiful stops along the UT12 - A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway)

Non facciamo un torto a nessuno se definiamo quelle della "Highway 12- A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway", meglio conosciuta UT-12, le 124 miglia più scenografiche dello stato dello Utah. Se, con la UT-24, che abbiamo abbandonato a Torrey, non ci eravamo di certo annoiati, beh... ora si entra in un'altra dimensione. Con il Capitol Reef National Park Ormai alle spalle, una deviazione a sinistra (provenendo da Capitol Reef) proprio nella già citata comunità di Torrey, apre al visitatore le porte di un mondo naturale davvero magico, che si comincia (a nord) con il Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument e si chiude (a sud ovest) con il Bryce Canyon National Park. La grande caratteristica della UT-12 è proprio il fatto che dopo ogni curva il panorama cambia, dai grandi canyons alle foreste, dalle solite stranissime e colorate formazioni rocciose alle piccole comunità che fanno di quest'area la loro casa.

We believe to hurt nobody by defining those of the "Highway 12- A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway", better known as UT-12, the most scenic 124 miles in the state of Utah. If we did not certainly get bored driving along the UT-24, well... now it's just a crossing over to another plane! Capitol Reef National Park is now back there behind you and a detour to the left (coming from Capitol Reef) in the community of Torrey, opens to the visitor the doors of a truly magical natural world, which begins (to the north) with the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and ends (south west) with the Bryce Canyon National Park. The great feature of the UT-12 is precisely the fact that the panorama changes after a single bend in the road: from the large canyons to the forests, from the usual strange and colorful rock formations to the small communities which call this area their home.

Provenendo da Torrey e quindi da nord, il primo baluardo di civiltà è Boulder, distante poco più di 36 miglia. Ma, onestamente, non ve ne accorgerete neppure, tante sono le possibilità di fermarsi lungo la strada per scattare una delle fotografie più belle del vostro viaggio.

Coming from Torrey and therefore from the north, the first outpost of civilization is the small town of Boulder, just over 36 miles away. Honestly, you won't even notice that because there are ust so many chances to stop along the way to take one of the most beautiful picture of your trip.

A 11 miglia dalla città non perdetevi l’Homestead Overlook, dal quale potrete avere un primo impatto sul panorama della Ut12 dall'altro da quasi 3.000 metri di altitudine. L'altro view point imperdibile è il Larb Hollow Overlook, che troverete ulteriori 11 km prima dell'Homestead Overlook.

11 miles from the city, make sure you won't miss the Homestead Overlook, from which you can have a first impact on the panorama of the Ut12 at an altitude of almost 3,000 meters above sea level. The other unmissable view point is the Larb Hollow Overlook, which is located further 11 km before the Homestead Overlook.

Cosa vedere a Boulder, Utah? Innanzitutto non aspettatevi una città vera e propria, ma una piccola comunità di quasi 200 anime, che per tutti è da sempre “last frontier in Utah”: tra le attrattive principali ricordiamo l’Anasazi State Park Museum, che offre antichi reperti sull'antico popolo Anasazi e la Burr Trail Road, una splendida strada percorribile solo se si ha a disposizione una vettura quattro ruote motrici. La Burr Trail Road è lunga 95 miglia (di cui 66 sterrati), e regala panorami se vogliamo anche più interessanti della Ut-12 stessa e conduce al Glen Canyon Recreation National Area.

What to see in Boulder, Utah? First of all, do not expect a real big town, but a small community (almost 200 people), which has always been the "last frontier in Utah" for everyone: among the main attractions we mention the Anasazi State Park Museum, which offers finds on the ancient Anasazi puebloans and the Burr Trail Road, a splendid road that can only be traveled by a four-wheel drive car. The Burr Trail Road is 95 miles long (66 of which are on dirt roads), and offers even more interesting panoramas than the Ut-12 itself and leads to the Glen Canyon Recreation National Area.

Il tratto più interessante della Ut-12 è sicuramente quello degli Hogback. Si sale vertiginosamente (senza guardrail) e davanti a voi si apriranno distese di rocce bianche e rosse. Se c'è un luogo lungo la UT-12 da ammirare con tutta la calma di questo mondo, è proprio quello degli Hogback.

The most interesting part of the Ut-12 is certainly that of the Hogbacks. The road climbs steeply (without any guardrails) and you'll see expanses of white and red rocks. The Hogbacks is a stretch of UT-12 that should be admired If there is a place along the UT-12 to be admired just calmly...

IL FIORE ALL'OCCHIELLO DELLA UT-12, LA LOWER CALF CREEK FALLS

Un tempo rifugio per i vitelli, da cui la cascata prende il nome, la Lower Calf Creek Falls è ai giorni nostri una delle escursioni più apprezzate lungo la UT-12. Per alcuni, nonostante la notevole crescita della sua popolarità negli ultimi anni, ancora oggi uno dei segreti meglio conservati dello stato. Dove siamo? All'interno dell'Escalante National Monument, uno dei national monument più belli degli Usa ma allo stesso tempo più complicati da visitare per via della sua posizione piuttosto remota.

LOWER CALF CREEK FALLS, THE FLAGSHIP OF THE UT-12 SCENIC BYWAY

Once a refuge for calves, from which the waterfall takes its name, Lower Calf Creek Falls is nowadays one of the most popular hikes along the UT-12. For some, despite the remarkable growth of its popularity in recent years, it is still one of the best kept secrets in the state . Where are we? Inside the Escalante National Monument, one of the most beautiful national monuments in the USA but at the same time more complicated to visit due to its rather remote location.

TUTTO QUELLO CHE C'E' DA SAPERE SUL LOWER CALF CREEK FALLS TRAIL

Nonostante le cascate si trovino sostanzialmente a 300 metri dalla strada, per raggiungerle occorre percorrere un trail di 5.8 miglia (a/r) che prende il via a ridosso del campground della BLM Calf Creek Recreation Area, l'unico punto in cui le pareti del canyon scendono al livello del torrente e rendono di conseguenza possibile l'accesso alle cascate. Se il trail è piuttosto semplice, nonostante la sua lunghezza, lo stesso non si può dire dell'accesso al campground. Dovrete, infatti, prestare molta attenzione alla deviazione dalla Ut-12 verso il campeggio, che compare all'improvviso sia che arriviate da sud che da nord. Considerate almeno 3 ore per percorrere il trail, godersi le cascate e tornare all'area di parcheggio.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE LOWER CALF CREEK FALLS
Although the waterfalls are located substantially 300 meters from the UT-12, visitors need to hike a 5.8-mile trail (round trip) to reach tem. The trail begins near the BLM Calf Creek Recreation Area campground, the only point where the walls of the canyons descend to the level of the stream and consequently make the access to the waterfalls possible. If the trail is rather simple, despite its length, you can easily miss the campground exit and then the trail. In fact, you will have to pay close attention to the quick deviation from the Ut-12 towards the campsite, which appears suddenly whether you are coming from the south or the north. Allow at least 3 hours to hike the entire trail, enjoy the falls and return to the parking area.

Il bellissimo trail che conduce alle cascate segue il corso del Calf Creek, un fiumiciattolo che poi confluirà nel più grande Escalante River. Vi ritroverete quasi sempre tra le pareti del canyon ed il percorso, decisamente ben segnalato, è perfetto per chiunque voglia cimentarsi in un percorso di moderata difficoltà (l'unica è sostanzialmente la lunghezza) ma senza particolari ostacoli. E', infatti, uno dei pochi trail dello Utah che non vive del costante rischio di flash flood tipico dei percorsi escursionistici del west americano.

THE LOWER CALF CREEK TRAIL IN DETAIL

The beautiful trail that leads to the falls follows the course of Calf Creek, a stream that will then flow into the larger Escalante River. You will almost always find yourself between the walls of the canyon and the path, which is definitely well marked, is perfect for anyone who wants to experience a  moderate-difficulty trail without facing any specific statutory obstacles (the only one issue is substantially the length of the trail). It is, in fact, one of the few trails in Utah that does not experience the constant risk of flash flood typical of the hiking trails in the American southwest.

L'ultimo miglio del trail è sicuramente il più semplice, sia perchè il canyon lascia spazio alla vegetazione, sia perchè finalmente troverete a farvi compagnia un po' di ombra. L'acqua della cascata è decisamente fredda, ma sarà un sollievo dopo l'ora di camminata sotto il sole cocente far riposare i vostri piedi. La cascata, dall'alto di una parete di Navajo Sandstone, si tuffa letteralmente in una piscina di acqua cristallina e limpida.

The last mile of the trail is certainly the simplest, either because the canyon leaves room for vegetation and there's finally some shade. The cascadin waterfall is decidedly cold, but it will be a relief to give your feet a rest after the long trail under the sun. I VIEW POINT NEI PRESSI DELLA CITTA' DI ESCALANTE

Escalante, la città che dà il nome al bellissimo National Monument, è soprannominata non a caso Heart of Scenic Byway 12" per via della sua posizione decisamente privilegiata. La sua foresta pietrificata, chiamata Petrified Forest State Park, merita una sosta, così come i tanti view point lungo la UT-12. Su tutti il Bointon Overlook, l'Heads of the Rocks Overlook (con scorsi sull'Escalante Canyon) e soprattutto il The Blues/Powell Point Overlook, quest'ultimo più vicino a Cannonville che ad Escalante: qui ad attendervi ci sarà una landa rocciosa dalle sfumature grigio-verdi e rosa.

THE VIEW POINTS NEAR THE CITY OF ESCALANTE

Escalante, the city that gives its name to the beautiful National Monument, is nicknamed "Heart of Scenic Byway 12" because of its decidedly privileged position. Its petrified forest, called Petrified Forest State Park, is worth a stop, as are the many view points along the UT-12. Above all the Bointon Overlook, the Heads of the Rocks Overlook (which offers views of the Escalante Canyon) and The Blues / Powell Point Overlook, which is closer to Cannonville than to Escalante. You'll definitely notice the rocky moor with gray-green and pink shades.

KODACHROME BASIN STATE PARK, TRA PINNACOLI E HOODOS

Del Bryce Canyon abbiamo già parlato qui (http://duecuoriperviaggiare.blogspot.com/2015/10/the-old-wild-southwest-summer-2015-day_8.html), ora ci vogliamo concentrare su un'altra delle attrazioni della UT-12, il Kodachrome Basin State Park. Lo consideriamo una valida alternativa al trail delle Lower Creek Calf Falls, un parco fatto di guglie, pinnacoli e rocce dalle forme stranissime. Dopo tutto, siamo solamente ad una buona mezz'ora dal Bryce Canyon. Già dal suo nome del tutto particolare, avuto in concessione dalla Kodak nel 1948, s'intuisce che questo è decisamente un luogo fotogenico, uno dei  tanti dello stato dello Utah. Ecco, se ci avete seguito, vi troverete di fronte un paesaggio che assomiglia moltissimo a quello del Coal Mine Canyon (Arizona) di cui abbiamo parlato in apertura di viaggio. L'ingresso al Kodachrone State Park costa 8 dollari per vettura. 

KODACHROME BASIN STATE PARK, BETWEEN PINNACLES AND HOODOS

We have already talked about Bryce Canyon here (http://duecuoriperviaggiare.blogspot.com/2015/10/the-old-wild-southwest-summer-2015-day_8.html), now we want to focus on another attraction of the UT-12, the Kodachrome Basin State Park. We consider it a valid alternative to the Lower Creek Calf Falls trail, a park made of spiers, pinnacles hoodos and very strange shaped rocks. After all, we're only a good half hour far from Bryce Canyon. Its name, which was granted by Kodak in 1948, says it all: it is clear that this is definitely a photogenic place, one of the many in the state of Utah. Here, if you are following our stories, there're a landscape that closely resembles that of the Coal Mine Canyon (Arizona) that we talked about at the beginning of the trip. Admission to Kodachrone State Park is $ 8 per car.

I MIGLIORI TRAIL DEL KODACHROME BASIN STATE PARK

In un parco dove non mancano le possibilità escursionistiche in un contesto di quasi completa solitudine, vi segnaliamo i cinque trail più significativi, tra cui i nostri preferiti, ovvero l'Angel's Palace ed il Shakespeare Arch. Cominciamo la carrellata dal Nature Trail, un brevissimo sentiero (0.8 km) situato a ridosso dell'area camping e che offre una sorta di introduzione sulla flora e la fauna del parco. L'Angel's Palace Trail (2.5 km) è il più semplice dei percorsi che permette di ammirare gli hoodos, le formazioni rocciose tipiche del parco. Se amate gli archi, non potrete perdere assolutamente il Shakespeare Arch Trail (2.7 km), un percorso situato all'interno del più òungo Sentinel Trail, mentre l'Eagle View Trail (0.5 km) sale di 152 metri offrendo un bel panorama sul Kodachrome Basin State Park. L'ultimo trail che segnaliamo è il Grand Parade Trail (2.4 km), dal quale potrete ammirare i pinnacoli più alti del parco. 

THE BEST TRAILS OF THE KODACHROME BASIN STATE PARK

In a park where there is no shortage of hiking opportunities in a context of almost complete solitude, we point out the five most significant trails, including our favorites, the Angel's Palace and the Shakespeare Arch. We begin the roundup of the best trails from the Nature Trail, a very short path (0.8 km) located near the camping area: it offers a sort of introduction on the park's flora and fauna. The Angel's Palace Trail (2.5 km) is the simplest of all the park's trails that allows you to admire the hoodos, the typical rock formations of the southwest Utah. If you love arches, you should not miss the Shakespeare Arch Trail (2.7 km), a path located within the longest Sentinel Trail, while the Eagle View Trail (0.5 km) climbs 152 meters offering a beautiful panorama of the Kodachrome Basin State Park. The last trail that we recommend is the Grand Parade Trail (2.4 km), from which you can admire the highest pinnacles of the park.
