Non tanto grande, ma neppure piccola, Key West (guida alle isole Keys) è un autentico gioiellino a due passi da Cuba, dove il mare, il relax ed il divertimento la rendono una delle mete preferite dai turisti europei.

This is still Key West, Florida, but we're in a corner of downtown: we do not hesitate to say that you will find here one of the most famous food trucks in the state and, honestly, one of the best fish taco in the nation. Che l'Oregon sia entrato nei nostri cuori ormai l'avrete intuito, così come la scena culinaria di uno stato tra i più sottovalutati nel panorama americano. Quando si parla dell'Oregon (Kauai, Northern California and Oregon) sono tre le cose che balzano immediatamente alla mente: le spiagge e la natura incontaminata, la nike... e la birra. E a Portland, la città regina dello stato, c'è davvero l'imbarazzo della scelta quando è il momento di sorseggiare una buona birra. Se siete a caccia del famoso "taste of Portland" una sosta andrebbe fatta ad una delle famosissime microbrewery, dette anche  Brewvana. Due delle più importanti sono la crystal Ballroom (1332 W Burnside St, in centro) situata nel pearl district e la Cascade Barrel House (939 SE Belmont S). Noi tuttavia, volendo combinare all'ottima birra anche dell'ottimo cibo, abbiamo optato per la Rogue Distillery and Public House  (1339 NW Flanders St.) e la scelta è stata davvero vincente. Birre artigianali di grande qualità (con possibilità di effettuare il taste di 4 birre) e cibo squisito. Tra le prime tre cene della spedizione oregoniana c'è certamente quella di Portland...

You may have guessed by now that Honestly, we fell in love with Oregon, as much as the culinary scene of one of the most underrated states in the American panorama. When it comes to Oregon (Kauai, Northern California and Oregon), three things have really become clear to us: Oregon means beaches and unspoiled nature, nike ... and beer. And while you're in Portland, the queen city of the state, you'll be really spoiled for choice when it's time to drink a good beer. If you are hunting for the famous "taste of Portland" you shouldn't miss one of the very famous microbrewery, also called Brewvana. wo of the most important "brewvana" are the Crystal Ballroom (1332 W Burnside St, in the center) located in the pearl district and the Cascade Barrel House (939 SE Belmont S). We still want to combine the excellent beer with excellent food and then we prefer to go to the Rogue Distillery and Public House (1339 NW Flanders St.). Great quality craft beers (you can taste 4 beers) and delicious food. One of the first three best dinners of the "on the road" is definitely the one we had in Portland...

18) MI MEXICO

A proposito di stati e parchi nazionali sottovalutati, a giocarsi il primato con Oregon e New Mexico è il "the great state of Colorado" (Arizona, Colorado e Utah), un'altra gemma degli Stati Uniti occidentali. Spesso i visitatori si dimenticano della bellezza di questo stato e si spingono, durante un viaggio nei grandi parchi del west, solamente sino al Mesa Verde National Park dimenticandosi che, senza andare troppo lontano, ad un centinaio di chilometri c'è una città stupenda, Durango, un'esperienza in treno fiabesca (Durango and Silverton Railroad) e uno dei trail più belli dell'intero stato (Ice lake Trail). E, per chi vuole spingersi un po' più a nord, anche un bellissimo parco nazionale, il Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Un canyon profondo e nascosto, visitabile sia nel suo versante sud (south rim) che in quello nord (north rim). La città di riferimento, "gate town" come la chiamano gli americani, del versante più turistico, quello a sud, è Montrose. Di per sé non imperdibile, ma capace di regalarci una delle cene messicane più buone di sempre. Finalmente nessun "mappazzone", ma solo tanta qualità: favolose enchilladas e tanto, tantissimo margarita a prezzi finalmente in linea con le abitudini europee.

Speaking of underrated states and national parks, there're not only Oregon and New Mexico. Let's talk then "the great state of Colorado" (Arizona, Colorado and Utah), another gem of the western United States. Often visitors forget the beauty of this state during a road trip in the west and only visit the Mesa Verde National Park forgetting that, without getting too far, just a hundred kilometers away there is a beautiful city, Durango, a fairy-tale train experience (Durango and Silverton Railroad)  one of the most beautiful trails in the whole state (Ice Lake Trail). And, for those who want to go a little further north, there's also a beautiful national park, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. A deep and hidden canyon, which can be visited both on its south rim and north rim sides. The gate town on the more touristic side, the one on the south, is Montrose. It's not that beautiful, but it gave us one of the best Mexican dinners ever: fabulous enchilladas and lots and lots of margaritas at a fair price.

I dintorni di San Diego non solo sono tra i luoghi più belli dell'intera California (i 4 migliori hike a San Diego e dintorni), ma sono anche quelli che regalano a livello culinario probabilmente il meglio. Encinitas si trova lungo la costa, ad una trentina di km a nord di San Diego, ed è la casa di uno dei fish market più apprezzati dell'intera California, l'Encinitas Fish Shop. Il cliente qui, è il grande protagonista della scena: una volta giunto il suo turno (il locale è sempre pieno!), infatti, dovrà scegliere prima il pesce tra quelli proposti (tonno scottato, lampuga, dentice, tonno albacora, salmone, capesante, gamberoni, aragosta, spigola, pesce spada e ricciola), successivamente dovrà selezionale la marinatura ed infine la cottura (grigliata o fritta) e la tipologia di piatto (taco, insalata, sandwich o piatto di solo pesce). Il locale è informale ma fornito di tantissimi tavoli e di un bar dal quale ordinare gli alcolici.

The surroundings of San Diego are not only among the most beautiful places in all of California (the 4 best hikes in San Diego and the surrounding area), but probably offer the best at culinary level. Encinitas is located along the coast, about 25 miles north of San Diego, and is home to one of the most popular fish markets in California, the Encinitas Fish Shop. The customer here is the great protagonist of the scene: just wait for your turn (this place is always crowded!) and choose the fish among those proposed (Ahi, Mahi Mahi, Red Snapper, Salmon, Sea Bass, Swordfish, Yellowtail, Albacore, Diver Scallops, Jumbo Shrimp, Slipper Lobster).Then select the marinade and finally the style (taco, salad, sandwich or plate. Grilled or fried). The restaurant is informal but equipped with plenty of tables and a bar where you can order alcohol.

Difficilmente sentirete un turista europeo passare dalle parti di Dunsmuir, profondo nord della California (Kauai, Northern California & Oregon), a meno che non stia per visitare il bellissimo parco nazionale del Lassen Volcanic o quelle che non a caso il 26° Presidente Teddy Roosevelt definì  l’ "ottava meraviglia del mondo”, ovvero le Burney Falls (Lassen Volcanic National Park & Burney Falls) all'interno del McArthur–Burney Falls Memorial State Park. Se doveste aver googlato entrambe le bellezze naturali, probabilmente avrete già capito che la California più bella è quella... a nord! A Dunsmuir ad accogliervi all'ingresso in città c'è una enorme locomotiva, perchè qui correva la Central Pacific Railroad (poi diventata Southern Pacific) e città era uno dei più importanti snodi ferroviari. E se vorrete dormire all'interno di una locomotiva, questa è davvero la cittadina che fa per voi. Ma Dunsmuir è anche casa di uno 100 migliori ristoranti degli Stati Uniti, Yak's on the 5, che non poteva non mancare nella nostra top 30. Qualche piatto imperdibile? Il "Make Me Want to Cry Garlic Parmesan Fries", le "Yaks Really, Really, Really Big Wings" o ancora "Oh My Goodness(OMG) How Could This Be a Burger, Burger". I nomi dicono già tutto, non c'è bisogno di aggiungere altro...

You will hardly hear about a European tourist that visits Dunsmuir, deep northern California (Kauai, Northern California & Oregon), unless he is about to visit the beautiful Lassen Volcanic national park or one of California's finest surprises. It is no coincidence, in fact, that the 26th President Teddy Roosevelt called the Burney Falls (Lassen Volcanic National Park & ​​Burney Falls) within the McArthur – Burney Falls Memorial State Park, the "eighth wonder of the world." If you ever "googled" both those natural beauties, you certainly would have understood that the most beautiful California is ... Northern California! Once you get to Dunsmuir, a huge locomotive welcomes you at the entrance to the city, because during the steam locomotive railroad era, Dunsmuir was notable for being the site of an important Central Pacific (and later Southern Pacific) railroad yard, where extra steam locomotives were added to assist trains on the grade to the north. And if you want to sleep inside a locomotive, this is really the town for you. But Dunsmuir is also home to one of the 100 best restaurants in the United States, Yak's on the 5, which could not miss in our top 30. Any unmissable dishes? The "Make Me Want to Cry Garlic Parmesan Fries", the "Yaks Really, Really, Really Big Wings" or "Oh My Goodness (OMG) How Could This Be a Burger, Burger". The names say it all, there is no need to add anything else ...

15) THE ORIGINAL PIERRE'S MASPERO

La cucina del sud degli Stati Uniti o la ami, o la odi (Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee & Arkansas). No, non c'è la via di mezzo. E, quando si visitano i luoghi magici del sud, se a livello di storia sia il Mississippi che l'Alabama reggono ampiamente il confronto con la vicina Louisiana, quando si parla di cibo... beh, qui la storia cambia. Il regno della cucina del sud è l'ex territorio francese che Napoleone cedette clamorosamente per "pochi dollari" agli americani. Quando si passa dalle parti di Lafayette (Lafayette e la cucina della Louisiana), si entrerà a stretto contatto con le cucine creole e cajun: e quindi con il tradizionale Boudin, che è una combinazione di carne e riso che sembra un salsicciotto. La filastrocca che recitano gli abitanti del posto è la seguente: “Napa Valley has wine, New York has Pizza, Wisconsin has cheese…South west Louisiana has Boudin”. Qui è ancor più di una religione ed esiste di diversi tipi: Boudin Blanc (un boudin leggermente colorato), il crawfish boudin (fatto di code di gambero cotte e riso), Shrimp boudin (gamberetti cotti e riso), alligator boudin (carne di alligatore e riso), Hot Boudin (extra spicy), Mild Boudin (speziato) e smoked boudin (affumicato). E’ talmente famoso che esiste il Boudin Trail, un percorso nel south west louisiana che vi porterà a sperimentare tutti i migliori ristoranti per il Boudin. A New Orleans, invece la cucina cajun è un po' più adatta al turista europeo: un autentico pezzo di storia della città è il The Original Pierre's Maspero, dove potrete assaggiare moltissime delle specialità della Lousiana, tra cui ovviamente anche il mitico Gumbo (una zuppa che definire favolosa è riduttivo), la jambalaya (altra chicca della cucina del sud) e molto altro.

When it comes to soul food, well...  you either love it or you hate it (Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee & Arkansas). No, there's no middle way.  When visiting the magical southern places, both Mississippi and Alabama hold a candle to Louisiana, but when it comes to food... that's a different story! The realm of southern cuisine is the former French territory which Napoleon sensationally sold for "a few dollars" to the Americans. When you visit Lafayette (Lafayette and Louisiana cuisine), you'll get into direct contact with the Creole and cajun cuisine: and therefore with the traditional Boudin whichis a combination of meat and rice that looks like a sausage. The very famous rhyme in this area is as follows: "Napa Valley has wine, New York has Pizza, Wisconsin has cheese ... South west Louisiana has Boudin". Here, boudin is even more of a religion. There're many types of Boudin: Boudin Blanc (a slightly colored boudin), crawfish boudin (made of cooked shrimp tails and rice), Shrimp boudin (cooked shrimp and rice), alligator boudin (meat of alligator and rice), Hot Boudin (extra spicy), Mild Boudin (spicy) and smoked boudin (smoked). It is so famous that there is the Boudin Trail, a route in the south west of Louisiana that will take you to experience all the best restaurants which offer Boudin. In New Orleans, however, Cajun cuisine is a bit more suitable for European tourists: an authentic piece of the city's history is The Original Pierre's Maspero, where you can taste many of the Lousiana's specialties, including of course also the legendary Gumbo (a fabulous soup), jambalaya (another gem of southern cuisine) and much more.

Gli Stati Uniti sono anche e soprattutto... i mitici diner. I classici ristoranti dove va la gente del posto, quelli dove assapori il vero gusto dell'America. Di diner se ne trovano ancora ad ogni angolo del paese, ma in pochi batteranno l'All American Diner di Cedar City, nello Utah, non lontano dal confine con il Nevada. Shane e Jessica Behunin hanno acquistato l'American Diner nel giugno 2010 e da quel momento hanno reso il locale un'icona di Cedar City, imperdibile per chiunque stia visitando i grandi parchi del west. La città è, infatti, un buon (ed economico) punto d'appoggio per chi è in procinto di vistare il bellissimo Bryce Canyon National Park o sta per raggiungere le mille luci di Las Vegas (The old wild southwest). Il nostro consiglio è di assaggiare il rinomato Pastrami Burger e, come dessert, la apple pie col gelato.

Shane and Jessica Behunin purchased the American Diner in June 2010 and have made the diner an icon of Cedar City, a must for anyone visiting the great parks of the west. The city is, in fact, a good (and cheap) support base for those who are about to visit the beautiful Bryce Canyon National Park or are about to reach the thousand lights of Las Vegas (The old wild southwest). Our advice is to taste the renowned Pastrami Burger and the apple pie with ice cream.

Charleston e la vicina Savannah (Georgia) sono indiscutibilmente due delle città più belle degli Stati Uniti. Tra storia e bellezze naturali (THE SOUTHEAST: Northern Florida, Georgia & South Carolina), le due icone della Carolina del Sud e della Georgia rappresentano un must quando si parla di on the road nell'est degli Stati Uniti. E, sulla costa east, anche la scena culinaria non è da meno. Qui si mangiano i gamberi più buoni degli Stati Uniti, ma tutto il "seafood" è di altissima qualità. E uno dei ristoranti da non mancare per gli amanti del pesce è proprio a Charleston, il The Darling Oyster Bar, il regno delle ostriche nel cuore di downtown. Le troverete sia crude che cotte, insieme ad altri pezzi pregiati come le vongole e soprattutto il granchio reale dell'Alaska. Il nostro menu? Gamberi alla creola, ostriche cotte, fish and chips e key lime pie!

Charleston and nearby Savannah (Georgia) are unquestionably two of the most beautiful cities in the United States. Between history and natural beauty (THE SOUTHEAST: Northern Florida, Georgia & South Carolina), the two icons of South Carolina and Georgia represent a must when talking about an on the road in the eastern United States. On the east coast, the culinary scene is not far behind. Here you'll eat the best shrimps in the United States, but all the seafood is of the highest quality. And one of the restaurants not to be missed for raw fish lovers is right in Charleston, The Darling Oyster Bar, the oyster kingdom in the heart of downtown. You will find them both raw and cooked, along with other fine pieces such as clams and especially the Alaskan king crab. Our menu? Creole prawns, cooked oysters, fish and chips and key lime pie!

Del fascino della Route 66 (Route 66, Hawaii & Seattle) abbiamo già parlato in abbondanza. Ogni miglio, ogni insegna dei motel e ogni ristorante hanno quel sapore magico che nessun altro on the road saprà darvi. Una volta in Texas, sarete molto vicini all'essere... a metà strada del vostro lungo ma affascinante percorso. Ma dove si trova esattamente il "midpoint" della Historical Route 66? Ad Adrian, Texas, che nel corso degli anni è riuscita proprio a mantenersi viva soprattutto per il fatto di essersi conquistata il ruolo di "midpoint" della route 66. I calcoli, complici i tratti più o meno nuovi della route 66, non sono facili, ma qui siamo "halfway", a metà strada. 1139 miglia, infatti, vi separano sia da Chicago che da Los Angeles. Il Midpoint Cafè è probabilmente il Cafè più famoso della mother road. I suoi dolci, da soli, valgono una fermata, ma a dirla tutta è qui che abbiamo mangiato il burger più buono della route 66....

We have already talked about the charm of Route 66 (Route 66, Hawaii & Seattle). Every mile, every motel sign and every restaurant has that magical flavor that no one else on the road will be able to give you. Once in Texas, you will be very close to being ... halfway on your long but fascinating journey. But where is exactly located the "midpoint" of the Historical Route 66? It's in Adrian, which has stayed alive especially because it got the role of "midpoint" of the route 66. Calculations are not so easy to make, but... yes, we're definitely halfway! 1139 miles, in fact, separates you both from Chicago and Los Angeles. The Midpoint Cafè is probably the most famous Cafe on the mother road. Cakes here are amazing, but honestly we got the most delicious burger of the entire trip.

D'accordo, alle Hawaii si mangia hawaiano, una piccola eccezione per la cucina continentale vogliamo farla. Siamo nella più bella e selvaggia delle isole hawaiane, Kauai (4 giorni a Kauai), quella che offre un o dei trail più belli degli interi Stati Uniti, il Kalalau Trail, quella della Na Pali Coast, quella dello splendido Waimea Canyon, il Grand Canyon del Pacifico. Quella che, quando la lasci, ti scende qualche lacrima... Il modo migliore per rendere meno amara la partenza e consumare l'ultima cena sull'isola nella cittadina di Kapa'a, nel cuore dell'isola. Dove? Ovviamente allo Street Burger, che vi regalerà semplicemente il miglior burger tra tutte le isole hawaiane. Accompagnato ovviamente da un'ottima birra artigianale, hawaiana e non.

All right, you should eat Hawaiian in Hawaii, but we want to make a small exception for the continental cuisine. We are in the most beautiful and wild of the Hawaiian islands, Kauai (4 days in Kauai), the one that offers one or the most beautiful trails in the entire United States, the Kalalau Trail, that of the Na Pali Coast, that of the splendid Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. The one that, when you leave it, we think you might even throw in a few tears... The best way to make the departure less bitter is having the last dinner on the island in the town of Kapa'a, in the heart of the island. Where? Obviously at the Street Burger, which will simply give you the best burger among all the Hawaiian islands and an amazing crat beer.
