Vi avevamo anticipato che un viaggio in Tirolo può far contenti davvero tutti, grandi e piccini. E nella mattinata del "day 8" siamo davvero... tornati bambini, attratti da quello che a tutti gli effetti è l'alpine coaster (la pista per slittini su rotaie) il cui tragitto è il più lungo del mondo. Siamo nel cuore del Tirolo e ci stiamo spostando verso ovest, nella bellissima valle che ha Imst come città principale. Per l'esattezza Hoch-Imst. Ed è proprio qui, nel centro della cittadina, che dovrete lasciare la vostra vettura (indirizzo: Imster Bergbahnen Hoch Imst 19 - 6460 Imst) e salire sino ai 1500 metri della malga Untermarkter Alm. Lo potrete fare tramite la seggiovia Untermarkter Alm oppure a piedi, seguendo il percorso che in circa un'ora, attraverso una mulattiera, conduce sino alla malga.

Con l'adrenalina ancora in corpo ci dirigiamo verso sud, precisamente ad Umhausen, che abbiamo scelto come sede di tappa per via degli alloggi decisamente più economici della vicina (e ben più famosa) Soelden, dove ogni anno si svolge una tappa della coppa del mondo di sci alpino. Umhausen è famosa per il parco acquatico termale più famoso d'Austria, l'Aquadome, nella valle Oetztal, noi però abbiamo preferito ancora una volta l'avventura (e che avventura!), percorrendo il trail che conduce alle cascate più belle del Tirolo, le Stuibenfall
STUIBENFALL, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WATERFALLS IN TYROL
With the adrenaline still in our bodies we head south, precisely to Umhausen. We choose Umhausen over the nearby (and much more famous) Soelden, where every year a stage of the Alpine Skiing World Cup takes place, because is decidedly cheaper. Umhausen is famous for Austria's most famous thermal water park, the Aquadome, in the Oetztal valley, but we have once again preferred the adventure, hiking the trail that leads to the most beautiful waterfalls in Tyrol, the Stuibenfall.
Con un'altezza di 159 meters, la Stuibenfall, a Umhausen nella valle Ötztal, è la cascata più grande e senza dubbio più affascinante del Tirolo. Il suo nome, Stuibenfall appunto, cascata polverosa, si deve alle immense nuvole d'acqua che danno vita a questo imponente spettacolo naturale. Pensate che uno studio dell'Università Privata Paracelsus di Salisburgo ha dimostrato che, un'ora di permanenza presso questa cascata per un periodo di 2-3 settimane, può migliorare fino al 58% la funzione polmonare degli sportivi con l'asma. Le Stuibenfall, che ogni mercoledì sera d'estate vengono illuminate sino a mezzanotte, sono davvero un must quando si visita il Tirolo...
With a height of 159 meters, the Stuibenfall in Umhausen in the Ötztal valley is the largest and undoubtedly most fascinating waterfall in Tyrol. Ma ciò che rende uniche queste cascate non è soltanto la sua bellezza, l'adrenalina di cui vi parlavamo in apertura è legata al tremendo (non ci vengono in mente aggettivi che rendano meglio l'idea) ponte sospeso (lungo 80 metri) in aggiunta ai 700 scalini, che dovrete percorrere per arrivare proprio sotto alla cascata. Ma andiamo con ordine e parliamo di come raggiungere le cascate Stuibenfall, un percorso impegnativo ma alla portata di tutti. Almeno sino al ponte sospeso ed ai successivi 700 scalini. Ma anche fermandovi prima avrete comunque una bellissima vista sulle cascate stesse.
But what makes these waterfalls unique is not only its beauty: the adrenaline we were talking about at the beginning is linked to the tremendous suspension bridge (80 meters long) in addition to the 700 steps, which you will have to walk to get right under the waterfall. Lasciate la vettura nell'ampio parcheggio del ristorante "La Cascata" (indirizzo: Am Tauferberg 1, 6441 Umhausen) con l'annesso laghetto artificiale che nei mesi estivi è preso letteralmente d'assalto da turisti e locali. Da qui parte il sentiero verso le cascate Stuibenfall, un percorso che in avvio costeggia il lago lungo la mulattiera e poi comincia, molto rapidamente, a salire. Considerate almeno un'ora (con un buon passo) per completare il percorso (interamente in salita) e raggiungere il rifugio Stuibenfallhütte. L'intero tragitto, tra andata e ritorno, si percorre invece in circa 1 ora e 45 minuti.
We suggest to leave your car in the large parking lot of the restaurant "La Cascata" (address: Am Tauferberg 1, 6441 Umhausen) with the adjoining artificial lake which is literally besieged by tourists and locals in the summer months. The trail towards the Stuibenfall waterfalls begins right here, a path that runs along small the lake along the mule track and then climbs very quickly. Allow at least an hour (with a good pace) to complete the one way trail (entirely uphill) and reach the Stuibenfallhütte refuge. It takes about 1 hour and 45 minute to hike the entire trail (out and back).
A metà del tragitto troverete in successione ben tre piattaforme di osservazione sulle Stuibenfall ed i più coraggiosi potranno anche avventurarsi su una via ferrata a misura di famiglia, lunga ben 450 metri, che si trova proprio vicino alla cascata. Il bello però deve ancora venire. Già, perchè giunti a ridosso delle cascate, vi attende un traballante (ma affascinante) ponte sospeso di 80 metri che attraversa la valle e vi conduce proprio sotto la cascata. Noi l'abbiamo percorso letteralmente ad occhi chiusi, senza mai guardare sotto, un'esperienza davvero elettrizzante.
Halfway along the tril you will find three observation platforms on the Stuibenfall and the bravest can also venture on a family-friendly via ferrata (450 meters long) which is located right next to the waterfall. But the best is yet to come. Yes, because once you get close to the falls, a shaky (but fascinating) 80 meters suspension bridge crosses the valley and leads you right under the waterfall. We literally walked it with our eyes closed, never looking underneath, a truly electrifying experience.
Giunti sotto la cascata, ad attendervi ci saranno ora ben 700 scalini (compresi quelli del ponte tibetano) che conducono a loro volta sopra la cascata, l'ultima fatica prima raggiungere il rifugio Stuibenfallhütte, situato 150 metri più in alto. Qui non perdetevi il buonissimo topfen strudel ma soprattutto il kaiserschmarren, il tipico dolce tirolese. A proposito di gastronomia tirolese, nella valle dell'oetztal, se ne avrete l'occasione assaggiate il loro burro (molto cremoso) ed il barbeque, speziato ed accompagnato con pane tostato all'aglio.

DOVE CENARE E PERNOTTARE - UMHAUSEN O SOELDEN?
Umhausen è una tranquilla cittadina dall'anima tirolese, ma Soelden è semplicemente decisamente più bella. Ma allo stesso tempo anche molto più costosa. Eppure distano solo poco più di 20 km l'una dall'altra. Noi, quando abbiamo dovuto scegliere se pernottare ad Soelden oppure ad Umhausen non abbiamo avuto dubbi, la scelta è ricaduta sulla seconda, ed in particolare sull'hotel "Explorer Hotel Ötztal" (89 euro a notte, per camera), un nuovissimo alloggio alla periferia della città. Per quanto invece riguarda la cena, abbiamo optato per Soelden dopo aver percorso per una mezzora le sue vie. La scelta è ricaduta sul Gasthof Grauer, un ristorante situato all'interno di un hotel. Inutile dire che questa è stata la miglior cena in terra austriaca...
WHERE TO DINE AND STAY - UMHAUSEN OR SOELDEN?
Umhausen is a quiet town with a Tyrolean soul, Soelden is just much more beautiful. But at the same time Soelden is also much more expensive. Yet is only 20 km from Umhausen. We had no doubts about where to spend the stay overnight, Umhausen was our first choice, and in particular the "Explorer Hotel Ötztal" (89 euros per night, per room), a brand new accommodation at the outskirts of the city. As for dinner, we opted for Soelden after walking its streets for half an hour. The choice fell on the Gasthof Grauer, a restaurant located inside a hotel. It goes without saying that this was the best dinner in Austria ...
