Quando si tratta di abbinare la natura alla città di Tucson, davvero avrete l'imbarazzo della scelta. Tutto qui è racchiuso e le distanze tra un luogo e l'altro non sono così impegnative come ad esempio nella vicina Phoenix. Ed ecco allora che diventa quasi sin troppo facile costruire un itinerario perfetto che includa tutto il meglio che una delle città più latine degli Usa ha da offrire. E, se nel primo giorno è stato il nord, ma soprattutto l'est ad essere grande protagonista, nella seconda giornata spesa a Tucson seguiremo una sorta di "loop" che prenda il via e si concluda ad ovest del centro della città. E che avrà come tre bellissime icone della giornata la ripidissima salita lungo la Tumamoc Hill, la visita alla sezione ovest del Saguaro National Park ed infine una piccola incursione nello Sweetwater Wetlands Park. No, niente refusi, esiste una zona paludosa nel cuore dell'aridissimo deserto di Sonora...
When it comes to pairing nature with the city of Tucson, you really will be spoiled for choice. Everything is contained here, and the distances between one place and another are not as demanding as in nearby Phoenix. And so it's almost too easy to build a perfect itinerary that includes all the best that one of the most Latin cities in the US has to offer. And if on the first day it was the north, but above all the east, to be the main protagonist, on the second day spent in Tucson we follow a sort of loop that begins and ends west of the downtown. Its three beautiful icons are the steep climb up Tumamoc Hill, the visit to the western section of Saguaro National Park and finally a small foray into Sweetwater Wetlands Park. Well, yes, there is a swampy area in the heart of the arid Sonora desert....
TUMAMOC HILL, LA VISTA PIU' BELLA DI TUTTA TUCSON
E' vero, non che Tucson sia propriamente una città di forte richiamo per il turista europeo (molto di più per quello americano) e le possibilità di incontrare altre persone del vecchio continente è piuttosto remota, ma se come noi cercate un luogo nella natura che ci consenta di stare a stretto contatto con i "Tucsoniani", nulla può competere con Tumamoc Hill, la passeggiata per eccellenza preferita dagli abitanti di Tucson. Ecco, più che passeggiata, dobbiamo ad onor del vero chiamarla una piccola scalata lungo una strada asfaltata che conduce a quella che è per noi la vista più bella di tutta Tucson.
TUMAMOC HILL, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VIEW IN ALL OF TUCSON
It's true, Tucson is not exactly a city with great appeal for European tourists (much more so for the americans) and the chances of meeting other people coming from the old continent is rather remote, but if like us you are looking for a place in nature that allows visitors to stay in close contact with the "Tucsonians", nothing can compete with Tumamoc Hill, the walk par excellence preferred by the inhabitants of Tucson. Well, more than a walk, to be honest, we must call it a quick climb along a paved road that leads to what is for us the most beautiful view in all of Tucson.
Dovrete lasciare l'auto lungo Anklam Road (ricordatevi che l'adiacente parcheggio dell'ospedale è privato) e seguire la tantissime altre persone che quotidianamente raggiungono la cima di Tumamoc Hill. Alcuni di loro raggiungeranno solo il "midpoint", dove troverete degli uffici ed anche un bagno, i più temerari raggiungeranno la cima, dove è posizionato lo Steward Observatory. Raggiunta la vetta, una sbarra impedisce ai visitatori di proseguire oltre lungo l'ultimo tratto di strada sterrata.
Just leave your car along Anklam Road (remember that the adjacent hospital parking lot is private) and follow the many other people who daily reach the top of Tumamoc Hill. Some of them will reach only the "midpoint", where you there're offices and also a restroom, the most daring will reach the top, where the Steward Observatory is located. Once at the top, a bar prevents visitors from continuing further along the last stretch of dirt road.
La salita a Tumamoc Hill (250 metri di dislivello, 3.1 miglia tra andata e ritorno) è abbastanza faticosa ma davvero bella. Ed è davvero non solo un must per i locali, ma anche per chi passa dalle parti di Tucson. Gli abitanti sono soliti percorrerla al tramonto, soprattutto nei mesi più caldi, per ammirare quegli splendidi colori che le montagne che circondano la città sanno regalare, ma anche per ammirare le stelle. Considerate almeno un'ora e mezza per salire e scendere da Tumamoc Hill.
The climb up Tumamoc Hill (elevation gain: 250 meters. The trail is 3.1 miles round trip) is quite strenuous but really beautiful. And it's really not only a must for locals, but also for those who pass by Tucson. The locals are used to ride it at sunset, especially in the warmer months, to admire the beautiful colors that the mountains surrounding the city can give, but also to admire the stars. Consider at least an hour and a half to climb and descend Tumamoc Hill.
Poco lontano, e ben visibile dalla vetta di Tumamoc Hill, svetta la sorella di questa collina, ovvero Sentinel Peak, conosciuta anche come "A" Mountain. Il nostro consiglio è quello di fare soltanto una delle due, ma ricordatevi che potrete raggiungere Sentinel Peak con la vostra vettura ma solo in orari e giorni prestabiliti. Quando abbiamo visitato Tucson (gennaio 2022), questi erano gli orari di apertura della Sentinel Peak Road, la strada che conduce in cima:

Not far away, and clearly visible from the summit of Tumamoc Hill, there's the Sentinel Peak, also known as "A" Mountain. Our advice is to do only one of the two, but remember that you can reach Sentinel Peak with your own car but only at scheduled times and days. When we visited Tucson (January 2022), these were the opening hours of Sentinel Peak Road, the road leading to the top:

SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK WEST SECTION - TUTTO QUELLO CHE C'E' DA SAPERE
Lasciata Tumahoc Hill ed allontanatisi dalle luci della città, la Kinney Road vi conduce nell'area a livello naturale più entusiasmante della città. La strada per arrivarci è già molto suggestiva ed attraversa il bellissimo Tucson Mountain Park di cui parleremo nel post successivo, ma il clou arriverà una volta raggiunta la sezione ovest del Saguaro National Park, al 2700 N di Kinney Rd. Del Saguaro National Park abbiamo già parlato anche nel precedente post e raccontato di come si divida in due ben distinte aree, situate una a 32 km ad est del centro e l'altra a 24 km ad ovest. Il parco fa parte del Deserto di Sonora e prende il nome dal saguaro, un cactus gigante nativo di questa regione. Sono tuttavia presenti anche altre specie di cactus appartenenti ai generi Echinocactus, Ferocactus, Opuntia e Cylindropuntia.
SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK WEST SECTION - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
After leaving Tumahoc Hill and getting away from the city lights, the Kinney Road leads you to the most exciting natural area of the city. The road to get there is already very picturesque and crosses the beautiful Tucson Mountain Park which we will talk about in the next post, but the highlight will come once you reach the western section of Saguaro National Park, at 2700 N Kinney Rd. We have already talked about Saguaro National Park in the previous post and told you that it is divided into two distinct areas, one located 32 km east of downtown and the other 24 km west. The park is part of the Sonora Desert and is named after the saguaro, a giant cactus native to this region. However, there are also other species of cactus belonging to the genera Echinocactus, Ferocactus, Opuntia and Cylindropuntia.
Seguendo la strada che dal visitor center conduce al cuore del parco, vi imbatterete dopo circa 2,5 nella decisamente scenografica Bayada loop drive, una strada sterrata e che percorre un "loop" di 10 km attraverso la splendida foresta di Saguaro. In questa particolare area del parco, potrete avventurarvi in sentieri piuttosto semplici come il Valley View Overlook Trail (1.5 km) oppure il Desert Discovery Nature Trail (1 km), ma anche in percorsi escursionistici lunghi ed impegnativi come ad esempio il Hugh Norris Trail (16 km tra andata e ritorno). Anche il Sendero Esperanza Trail incrocia l'hugh Norris Trail e si conclude nel King Canyon Trail. Il consiglio, come sempre quando si tratta di sentieri impegnativi in un area desertica, è quello di chiedere maggiori informazioni ai ranger del visitor center.
Following the road that leads from the visitor center to the heart of the park, after about 2.5 km visitors come across the very scenic Bayada loop drive, a 10 km dirt road that runs through the beautiful Saguaro forest. In this particular area of the park, you can venture on fairly easy trails such as the Valley View Overlook Trail (1.5 km) or the Desert Discovery Nature Trail (1 km), but also on long and challenging hiking trails such as the Hugh Norris Trail (16 km round trip). Also the Sendero Esperanza Trail crosses the Hugh Norris Trail and ends in the King Canyon Trail. The advice, as always when it comes to challenging trails in a desert area, is to ask the rangers at the visitor center for more information.

For those of you, like us (we already visited it in 2015), looking for something easy and have just a couple of hours to spend in the park, here's a list of recommended trails:
- Desert Discovery Nature Trail
A 0.4 mile loop located even before you get to the Bayada Loop Drive. You'll find it on the left along a paved road shortly after leaving the visitor center.

- Signal hill
Along the Bayada Loop Drive, take this small detour till you reach the Signal Hill Picnic Area. This is where this very simple and short trail starts.: it leasd to the top of Signal Hill, where you can see some ancient petroglyphs. Recommended at sunset.
Length: 0.3 miles
- Valley View Overlook Trail
Questo breve trail di poco più di un chilometro conduce ad un punto di osservazione sopraelevato da cui si gode di una bella vista sulla Avra Valley. Si tratta di un sentiero di 0.4 miglia (0.8 se si considera il ritorno), durante il quale attraverserete due "wash" per poi salire gradualmente sino alla cima. Una volta raggiunta la fine del sentiero, potrete decidere di tornare sui vostri passi o proseguire connettendovi ad altri trail.

- Valley View Overlook Trail
This short trail is just over a mile long and leads to an elevated overlook with a beautiful view of the Avra Valley. It is a 0.4 mile trail (0.8 if you count the return), during which visitors will cross two washes and then gradually climb to the top. Once you reach the end of the trail, you can decide to retrace your steps or continue by connecting to other trails.

Prima di raggiungere il Saguaro National Park potrete fare una sosta anche all'Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, che offre in un colpo solo uno zoo di 40 acri, un acquario, un giardino botanico, un museo di storia naturale, una galleria d'arte fondata nel 1952 ed anche 3.2 km di sentieri che attraversano il paesaggio desertico. Before getting to the Saguaro National Park, you can also make a stop at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, which offers in one fell swoop a 40-acre zoo, an aquarium, a botanical garden, a natural history museum, an art gallery founded in 1952, and also 3.2 miles of trails that traverse the desert landscape. While hosting more than 400,000 visitors a year, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is one of the most visited attractions in all of Arizona and the museum, in addition to being widely recognized worldwide as a model institution for innovative presentation and interpretation of native plants and animals featured together in ecological exhibits, is also listed as one of the top ten zoological parks in the world due to its unique approach to interpreting the complete natural history of a single region.
UNA ZONA PALUDOSA NEL DESERTO? E' TUTTO VERO!
Intendiamoci, a livello estetico c'è decisamente di meglio, ma se come noi state completando il loop ad ovest della città di Tucson, finirete per imbattervi in questo luogo insolito, lo Sweetwater Wetlands Park, l'unica area paludosa di tutta Tucson. Già, è tutto vero. In un'area del sud degli Stati Uniti dove c'è carenza di acqua, la natura ha saputo anche grazie all'aiuto dell'uomo costruirsi una sua nicchia, che poi di fatto è diventata la casa di tantissime specie di piante e animali.
A SWAMPY AREA IN THE DESERT? IT'S ALL TRUE!
Mind you, in terms of aesthetics, sure there are better, but if like us you're completing the loop west of the city of Tucson, you'll end up coming across this unusual place, the Sweetwater Wetlands Park, the only swampy area in all of Tucson. Yep, it's all true. In an area of the southern United States where there is a shortage of water, nature has been able to build its own niche with the help of man, which has become home to many species of plants and animals.
